A 2019 Washington Post article showed some interesting numbers about medical schools. That year, for the first time, women were slightly ahead of men in terms of medical school enrollment – according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.
But when you look at the number of women pursuing surgical careers from about the same period, the gap between men and women is much greater with men dominating that part of the field.
Within plastic surgery, a 2017 study showed the ratio of male to female surgeons was approximately 5 to 1. A smaller gap than in other surgical specialties, but sill surprising when you consider the fact that women make up the vast majority of plastic surgery patients.
The Quatela Center for Plastic Surgery has a balanced surgical team consisting of 2 men – Drs. Vito Quatela and William Koenig and 2 women – Drs. Ashley Amalfi and Heather Lee.
