(00:43):
Bucky Brooks, Happy divisional playoff weekend? Man, you have to
be excited about today, actually the entire weekend, because if
you extend the weekend Saturday, Sunday, Monday, it is loaded
with great football games. Can't wait to look at the
games today. But man, tomorrow and Monday, you're talking about
two more divisional games and in the National Championship game.
(01:05):
I mean, how can you beat the Yeah, no, it's
gonna be awesome. The first of the four games that
will be coming up here kick off in a little
over a half hour from now in the Bay Area.
It is the Vikings at the forty Niners. Um. Look,
I have no idea what to make of. Nothing would
surprise me in the NFC. I've been saying about the
NFC all year long. I think anybody can beat anybody
(01:26):
because I think it's just a much better conference top
to bottom than the a f C IS. So I
wouldn't be surprised if Minnesota went on the road and
actually won this game. Where do you stand on this matchup?
I like this matchup for the Minnesota Vikings. I like
it because I believe they're one of the most talented
teams in the NFC. They have a loaded defense. Even
though their defense is older, they can rush to passer.
(01:48):
They're outstanding at the second level with their linebacker core
Anthony Barr Eric Kendricks. They do a great job of
being able to stop the run and then Mike Zimmer
being able to throw a couple of wrinkles at Jimmy
Gara Popolo maybe debate him into a turnover. I like
this matchup because really they're kissing cousins when it comes
to the way that they operate on offense. The Minnesota
(02:08):
Vikings should know how to defend and deal with this
Sentrancisco forty not a running game. You know. It's so
last week we were taught and we were on the
air during that Bill's Texans game, which I'm still trying
to figure out what the hell I watched. I don't know.
Like the Josh Allen experience in the fourth quarter is
unlike any I've ever seen in my life. What a
what a wild ride. Josh Allen put everybody on and
we were looking around going wait, did he really just
(02:31):
trying lateral that? Did he try a lateral? Yeah? Got
it got a little it got a little big for him,
It got a little fast for him. Um, you know.
And and here here's the thing that um, everyone should
be able to watch for today when they're looking at
the game. Every time you advance a playoff round, the
game gets faster, noticeably faster. And so the Minnesota Vikings
(02:51):
have been a team that has they've been in the playoffs,
like a couple of years ago, he went to the
championship game Uh, they have some veterans that have played
in big moments smsons before and miss the playoffs in
a long time. So very very early in the game,
I'm going to be closely looking at how Jimmy Garoppolo
handles UH the environment and how all of their young
players handled the environment, because it is different when you
(03:13):
have a level of urgency when his winner go home. Man,
it is very very, very very challenging, UH to think
about how you can play this game. And that's why
I brought up the Josh Allen from a week ago.
We had three quarterbacks to make their playoff debuts. Last week,
he had Josh Allen and he pretty much melted down
late in that game. You had Carson Wentz who didn't
even finish the game, and you had Ryan Tannehill for
(03:35):
through for seventy two yards. So it's not like first
time quarterbacks were lightening it up. Here. We are Jimmy
garoppolo first ever playoff start. I just I wonder if
the same thing happens here. I know a lot of
people point to Kirk Cousins and his flaws outside of
the one pm E Stern time window, but I just
wonder if we see a little bit of Jimmy Garoppolo
(03:55):
maybe rushing it. Plus, has Kyle Shanahan He's never been
a head coach for a playoff game yet, has he? No,
he hasn't been a head coach in the playoff game.
Just be his first playoff game as a head coach. Obviously,
he did call plays in the Super Bowl, so he
should be able to handle it. I think the big
thing to watch with Jimmy Garoppolo, how does jim how
does Kyle Shanahan set him up for success early? I
(04:17):
believe the first fift team plays the opening script for
the San Francisco forty Niners. You have to have something
in there that allows him to kind of get the
monkey off his back, look for them to dial up
and explosive shot play um, something that allows him to
kind of settle into the game um and get to
playing football like we've seen Jimmy g play football throughout
the regular season. This is a game where Kyle Shanahan
(04:39):
has to call the game really through the eyes of
his quarterback. He has to get a good feel, in
a good sense of how nervous um, how much angst
does his quarterback have when he's calling plays. He has
to manage that to make sure that he doesn't put
Jimmy in in a bad way. I was having a conversation, uh.
Charles Peanut Telman joined us on the air UM a
(05:01):
couple of years ago, and I was filling it on
a show. I think it was with Dan Buyer. Who's
your side piece when it comes to me and listen,
I'm not I'm not jealous about it. I just you know,
you guys like to play games, and Brooks and Dunn
and all the other stuff that goes along with it.
But Charles Peanut Tillman was telling us a story about
when Jay Cutler went out in the playoff game, the
NFC title game against the Green Bay Packers. They weren't
(05:23):
upset with Jay Cutler because they knew that he was
legitimately injured. They were upset at his backup and and
his backup was Todd Collins, and Charles Tillman said on
the air that guy wanted out of that game as
fast as possible. He had it was the moment was
too big. He was too rattled by it, He's all
I was. So. I was so angry at the time
(05:45):
because our starting quarterback goes down a quarterback who played
his ass off the week before and to beat the
Seattle Seahawks goes down with a real injury. A veteran
backup steps in and completely melted down, and they had
to go to Caleb Haney, who was the third stringer
in that spot. I think got a Colorado state if
I'm not mistaken, And he played pretty well considering the circumstances.
(06:06):
But Todd Collins, even a veteran, and his teammates knew
that he was afraid of the moment. So I bring
that up. Have you you played in playoff games before?
You don't have to name names, but if you looked
around and seen guys and thought, yeah, this might be
a little big for him. The only thing that I
can say, and actually, here's here's what I would saying.
(06:27):
I was. I was with the Kansa City chiefs Man.
This had to be. UH were thirteen and three. We're
the number one seed. Uh in the playoffs. Had a
home game. We're playing John Always Denver Broncos. They had
won the wild card round. They're coming to our house.
We had to buy Rich Gannon had played the last
four or five games. Elvis Gerback was the starting quarterback,
(06:50):
Marty Schottenhamer, being the loyalist that he is, decided to
go back to Elvis Gerbach. He went back to him
in a playoff game, a divisional game. When I'm telling
you that it is as fast as you can ever imagine,
is it as physical as you can never think about
it being? And he will did. He wilted it under
the pressure. He didn't have a great game. And I
still think to this day there are many of us
(07:12):
that played on the team to believe that if rich
Getting plays in the game, we're not only going to
win that, but we're going to win the super Bowl,
because that's the kind of rhythm, that's the kind of
team that we had. But it was too big for
the quarterback. In my estimation. It's it's crazy and you
look at it and you think, oh, well, they're professionals.
But look, I think I think the moment can get anybody.
It absolutely it absolutely, Like like Jonas, I don't know,
(07:33):
like I would say maybe the first time that you
hosted a national radio show, maybe you're filling in for
somebody like hey, Jonas, we're gonna let you do it,
and you have to do it by yourself and the
pressure of knowing that everyone is listening, your bosses are
paying attention to you. You're internally saying that this may
be my one shot to get on. How do you
(07:54):
men manage all of those emotions and deliver a good product.
That's what these guys are dealing with to day. But
as the money is in consequential, everyone is making the
same thing. Like the playoffs are so great because it
is literally everyone is playing for the ring. Everyone is
playing for the championship. Like all of the other stuff
is off, and so it is as pure as you
(08:16):
will find the game because it is strictly for the championship.
Is nothing else. There's no hidden agendas. It is all
about winning. And so you really see who has that
stuff on the inside, uh that enables them to be champions.
It's uh looked like back in the day when you
bought you know, early on protein powder, they would tell
you fifty five sixty a protein. In reality, it was
(08:39):
like twenty grams a good protein and just a bunch
of crap. They had it in there to go along
with it. This is the good protein weekend. This stuff,
this is all, this is all all, This is exactly
what you want to see, and because it's exactly what
you want to see, every team major flaws they're exposed
in the playoffs, and great coaches have to work around
(08:59):
the those flaws. Um. Whatever it is the Tennessee Titans. Uh,
there a team that runs the ball, they throw off
play action. If they get into a drop bad game,
that's probably not going to go in their favor. Uh.
The Baltimore Ravens have been able to dictate the terms.
They have rarely played from behind this season. How do
they manage having to play catchup and chase points? Uh?
(09:21):
The Kanna City Chiefs. Their defense has been lights out
the last half the season. But is that the same
defense that shows up so in the playoffs. Whatever your
team struggled doing throughout the regular season, it may rear
sectly hit in the playoff game, and how they managed
to work around that would determine whether they're able to
go on. Are these the best eight teams in the NFL? Like,
(09:44):
like would you if you were to do if you
had to do power rankings of all the playoff teams?
Did we get the eight best or or I can't.
I can't say that we got the eight best because
New Orleans to me, um play like a top eight team.
I mean, Orleans is better than Tennessee, correct, better than Houston. Correct. Okay,
(10:05):
so New Orleans, I would say, maybe what the third
best team in the a f C if you had
to say so, yeah, I mean like, look as they
were coming in. Look they came in as the third seed.
But they didn't they didn't hold up their end of
the deal. And the great thing about the playoffs, the
great thing about all of this stuff you gotta earn it.
You gotta earn your way to the championship. Like there's
no one hands it to you, no one gives you
(10:26):
the trophy. And I think that's why playoff football is
so rewarding to watch. Whatever you get, you earned, Like
there are no easy ways to the title. And so
even though there are people that are saying, like the
Green Bay Packers and maybe San Francisco forty nine is
have an easy road to the super Bowl because the
Saints are are out, please believe that they are going
to have to overcome some kind of adversity to get
(10:47):
to the Super Bowl and to win the championship. And
it's funny you bring up, you know, the pay and
all that's great, but that's not what this is about.
Right now. Those guys aren't thinking about it. I had
a guy tell me one time, he played in the
NFL for a while. He said, I can assure you
the last thing a guy's thinking about when he goes
over the middle and gets a helmet in his ribs
is how much money he's gonna get on Tuesday. Like,
that's the last thing he's thinking about, you know, that's
(11:08):
the last thing. And and and just so you know,
like so the way that the pay structure, so everyone
during the regular season, whatever your salary is divided by seventeen,
that's how you get paid every Monday. So if you're
a guy that makes whatever thirteen million dollars, divide that
by seventeen, that's what you get. In the playoffs, everybody
(11:29):
gets the same in every round. So whatever Russell Wilson
and the free agent that is playing, they may they
get the same check. To the Harrison everybody, everybody's getting
the same check. So the playoffs are really little to
do about the money. I think, like, if you go
(11:50):
all the way, you may get up to maybe one
seventy maybe two hundred thousand extra because that's what the
Playoff share is. But so for you guys are making
eight two million dollars like that, that super Bowl share
basically pays for you, funding everybody to come to the
Super Bowl to watch you. Um. And so that's when
we talk about the pure part of the game, like
(12:12):
you're in essence really just playing chasing the title. You're
just chasing the ring. And I guess if you ask guys,
like looking back at it, if you had a choice
between the playoff money and the ring, what would you
cherish from the most everybody to a man would I
totally agree? Bucky Brooks Jonas knocks here on Fox Sports
(12:35):
Radio from the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios. You can
check out the show on the I Heart Radio app.
All Right, coming up next, we're going to get the
latest and a very bizarre situation that some look at
as a mistake by one NFL team. Find out who
we're talking about. Next here on FS are Bucky Brooks
Jonas knocks Here on Fox Sports Radio. You can check
(12:55):
out this show on the I Heart Radio app. Right
coming up here in a little over ten minutes from
now on Fox Sports Radio, we will have an update
on the status of one player in the divisional round
of the NFL Playoffs. So we'll have that for you
here a little over ten minutes from now on Fox
Sports Radio right now. Though always kind enough to spend
a few minutes with us here every single Saturday here
(13:17):
on FS are he is Adam Kaplan, NFL Insider. You
hear him on Sirius x M as well. Adam, thanks
so much for the time. We always appreciate it. It's
great to speak to you ahead of the first game
here today, and it's always a great weekend. It's a
less time we're gonna have these four games. You know,
we we played two for the championship round and uh
looking forward to it and and what should be four
(13:38):
competitive games with this first one, to me is probably
my favorite game of the four. Yeah, is it? Because
they are so similar? Um, it was Kirk cousins performance
last week enough to make you believe that they've got
a shot here at San Francisco. Because while we talked
a lot about first time quarterbacks making their first playoffs
start a week ago, I haven't heard as much made
(13:58):
about Jimmy Garoppolo. What about this game jumps out to you. Yeah,
no doubt you know with Garoppolo, he answered the bell
of time after time that same game. I know it
wasn't in the playoffs, but that game on the road
where they know they had to win, had and we
we we we've talked about the fourth Garoppolo. He was
asked to do it, he did it. That was a
particular game we played against a really good football team
(14:18):
on the road. This game is at home. You know,
I know they're coming off of a bye, they were
well arrested, but this is a big moment for him
and this is what he's been waiting for his whole career.
This is why the game of pretty good contracts. Uh.
Let's go to the Cousins for a second. Talking to
teams that play the Vikings, the way you beat them
is you beat their offensive line. The Niners have one
of the best defensive lines in the National Football League.
(14:40):
To me, this is where the game will be one.
If the Niners get constant pressure on Cousins, the Vikings
are going to be in trouble. You know, if they're
gonna roll him out this is what they do. But
the Niners really get after it, and they're getting Kwai
Alexander back from US tour in pectoral muscle. Uh, they're
getting d Flord back. We'll see how much he can play.
That's a big one in their nickel package. So to me,
(15:01):
the Niners have a distinct advantage their D line versus
the Viking offensive line. But the Vikings do have that
really good run game, So we'll see how it breaks down.
You know, it's funny that you talk about that game
because I feel like that game is serving as an
advertiser for the main event, and the main event is
what everyone wants to see with Lamar Jackson is going
to do against the Tennessee Titans. And it's not that
(15:21):
people think that the Tennessee Titans aren't resistance. I think
people want to see if he is going to be
able to really continue his solid play in the postseason.
What do you spect to see from number eight when
he takes the field tonight. Yeah, it's interesting. So, and
I've been on record saying I don't think teams are
gonna be able to figure out the Ravens run game
if they ever figured out into the off season, suit
of like an off season project for teams. That's what
(15:42):
coaches have always told me. They kind of figure out
what teams are doing. They study it, they've got time
to do it, and they figure it out. But Greg
Roman is always once had a step ahead of the
game with his run game. He's got he runs at personal.
People tell me the most sophisticated run game on tape.
It's hard to get it beat on one exactly they're doing,
and you're gonna see that today. You're gonna see some
(16:02):
stuff that danps, the de coordinator for the Titans used
to be the decordination for the the Patriots for many years,
has not seen before. Um, that's what they do. It's
kind of like Belichick on defense. He tries to show
you stuff. But what I thought was interesting last week's game,
the Patriots really did not load the box up like
they typically do, and that that costs them the game.
(16:23):
To me, if you're the Ravens with Derrick Henry, you're
you're you're gonna you're gonna stack the box. And consequently
some teams, what they've done is they've had a fifth
defensive lineman uh for most of the game against the
bottomore run game now unfortunately hasn't worked very much. And
when when you do that, you're acceptable to Mark Andrews
or Marquis Brown downfield. So that's kind of what I
(16:44):
see from that game. That's also very intriguing and I
would agree with it. Adam Kaplan, Fox Sports Radio's NFL Insider,
joining us here on Fox Sports Radio Bucky Brooks Jonas Knocks.
You can also hear Adam on sirius XM NFL Radio
as well. Road team you give the best shot at
pulling off an upset this week as who? I would
(17:04):
say Seattle just because Russell Wilson and Philly last week.
He was unbelievable with these plays, the plays when the
first look doesn't work and with dk Mtcalf coming on
like he has. I can't wait to see that matchup.
Kevin King should cover him. He's a tall corner about
six three for the Packers. That's a really a matchup
that I look forward to seeing tomorrow night in Green Bay.
(17:25):
I just I give playoff, playoff experience. And the thing
is the the Seahawks, if you include yesterday last week's
road game, road win at Philly eight one on the
road for such a young football team is incredible to me.
And the weather is not be too bad there. You know,
the weather people are talking about around the league is
actually pretty nice in Baltimor night it's gonna be the
mid sixties, which it's almost hard to believe. You know,
(17:46):
as much as I love the division around of the playoffs,
I have to talk about the coaching highers because I
want to get your hands out taking perspective. Why was
Matt ruled the right choice for the Carolina Panthers on
a David Tepper unbelievable command and ge passion that everyone
I've talked to his friends with him coaching, guys who
coached with him or know him, said his number one
(18:08):
goal in his career is to be head coach of
the National Football League. Uh. He's a program builder. And
now he's got a seven year contract. He's got all
the power he's gonna need. Uh the higher an assistant
general manager who have a lot of controls well to
help him out. It's you know, if the Giants wanted them, um,
when they could see they weren'ting again, they hired Joe
Judge and that was also very interesting. But you know,
(18:28):
Matt Roy, I've been around him socially. I mean, the
guy doesn't stop with the energy. You guys, a pretty
incredible competitor. Uh, smart guy. I'll be interested to see.
I'm told that he has not quite have his offensive
coordinator yet. He's he's working on it. It's one of
the one of the ways you evaluate coaches is who
do they hire his assistants? And that that that's going
to be a challenge for rule because remember when he
was in the NFL, He's such a low level of
(18:49):
assistant and it wasn't in the NFL for very long.
Do we have an update on the Browns. I'm seeing
that they're now talking to general managers, but there's been
no decision made on coach. Um. What is the feeling
for people you've talked to about how they're doing their
coaching search and their general manager search this time around? Yeah,
they're done. They had their last interview. So um, what
(19:12):
they have to decide is Robert solid defensive coordina for
the Niners, just still in it if the Niners win
today or they willing to wait for him? Like so,
I'll give an example the Browns and Jimmy hasn't. We're
not willing to wait for Dan Quinn uh in twenty
fourteen and he was with Dan once the defense for Seattle,
(19:32):
the Falcon's show were and they that turned out to
be a good choice. Dan is still with the Falcons.
That was when, ironically Mike Patton was hired, and Mike
Patton is now defensive coordinator for the Packers. So I
think it's I would expect it to get done by Monday.
Josh McDaniels has been the favorite. The fact that it
was not, the fact that it isn't that they haven't
(19:52):
offered him the job yet is surprising to me. That
tells me that the other some of the other guys
are still alive to possibly get it. The film all
along is that it would be an offensive coach, But
if Josh McDaniels doesn't get it, that opens it up
to just about three or four other guys, So keep
an eye on that. But again, I expect to be
get done by money and not go past there. Uh.
(20:14):
Tell me a little bit about Joe Judge Um, not
a lot of people knew him, kind of came out
of out of nowhere to get the Giants job. Why
was he the fit? Why was he the ones to
have the Maryor's picked disciplinarian? Ironically, just like Tom Coughlin,
very very very military based background. Dad as a former
football player. Joe grew up in Philly, went to Lancaster UM.
(20:37):
He's from the Philly Aary. He went to a Catholic
school and he's actually a quarterback. And here he sort
of grew up in the same circles as Ironically, Kevin
Stefanski was one of the finals for the Brown's head
coaching job. Who's coaching today obviously is the OC for
the Vikings. Um. I knew. I knew of Judge because
he was the he was the special team's coach for
the for the Patriots, but and he coached the receivers
(21:00):
along with special teams for this this this one season.
But yeah, it was sort of the out of the box.
Higher wasn't what we were expecting. But you know what,
I brought this up, Buck. You know, when any Reid
was hired by the Eagles, literally no one ever heard
of him. Remember any Read was not even a coordinator
for the Packers. The Eagles just that they had heard.
He's a disciple of not only Mike Holbrn, but he's
(21:24):
very organized and Joe Judge is very organized, very very
serious guy. Though his press conference are very interesting. I'm sure,
he's gonna he's one of these run game guys. You
could just tell how he was talking. But in the end, um,
as I said, it comes down also to who you
hire as your assistance. I'm looking forward to seeing who
he hires, because he said he's just getting his list
(21:45):
together and he has not hired anyone yet. Adam Caplan
last one for me here on Fox Sports Radio. You
can get Adam on Twitter at Kaplan NFL. Um, you're
in Philly, so I got to ask you the question. Nationally,
there was some back and forth certain you know, media members,
NFL analysts were critical of Carson Wentz. This is now
a referendum on Wenz. He's injury prone even though it's
(22:07):
concussion and it was hit to the back of the head.
The feeling they're in Philly on Carson Wentz getting his
first playoff start and exiting early and Josh McCown playing
and finishing the game with a hamstring that was ripped
off the bone. Yeah, I mean, nothing's changed with Wentz.
He's their guy. Um. What happened was they held the
offensivecording to Microw accountable for really something he had no
(22:29):
control over. The Eagles lost their top three receivers. Um,
that's I don't know how you function like that. And
that's why Greg Worthy, former University Houston quarterback, was switched
to receiver. Uh, they were was a great story. They
discovered him after the other guys got hurt. No, they've
not wavered at all. Then, Josh McCown is incredible. Um
getting no Josh over the years. I'll tell you what.
(22:50):
He certainly has a future in coaching. He was working
for ESPN as we know, and I know I believe
when I talked to Josh about players, what a great evaluator.
He'sa It's funny for a guy might see mild manner
as a quarterback. He's got some strong takes on players
that he's he's going up against. He's got a great
career ahead of him. I think it's if he wants
the coach of the National Football League, that'll be available
(23:11):
to him. You know, he he coaches high school, so
it's gonna be interesting to see what happens with him
and once he gets recovered from this injury. Get him
on Twitter at Kaplan NFL. He is Adam Kaplan, Fox
Sports Radio, NFL Insider Series x M, NFL Radio as well.
Adam always appreciated enjoy the games. Thank you, Jonas Knox,
Bucky Brooks here on Fox Sports Radio. Right coming up next,
(23:32):
we've got an update on a major status involving a
player this weekend in the NFL. We'll have that for
you next year on Fox Sports Radio for all the
latest so from around the world of sports. It's Ralph Irvan. Well,
thank you very much, Jonas, and we do start with
that NFL playoff game because it's about to get started
in Northern California, Minnesota playing at San Francisco. Vikings quarterback
(23:54):
Kirk Cousins, nos, Hey, you gotta do my part. I
just got to do my job and film role. And
certainly the quarterback is gonna take praise and things will
go well. He's gonna take a lot of criticism when
things don't go well. Ultimately, it's about winning football games,
playing at a high level. You got to leave the
rest to say, hey, I did my best, gave all
I could, and we'll let the results worked themselves out.
Kick off in San Francisco just a couple of minutes away. Meanwhile,
(24:17):
we've got finals in from college basketball number thirteen Louisville.
They escaped Notre Dame with the sixties seven sixty four victory.
Wisconsin wins at number State forty nine. Number one Gonzaga
up seventeen ten over loyal Merrimount. That's with play in
the first half, while number eighteen Virginia trailing at home
(24:39):
to Syracuse fourteen eleven, seven thirty nine to play in
the first quarter. Of course, there's a lot more NFL
coming up as we sent it back to Jonas Knox
and fuck you Brooks, thanks for Ralph coming alive from
the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios where it's easy to
say more on car insurance with Geico, go to Geico
dot Comic Call eight D nine Voice seven Otto. The
(24:59):
only hard part figuring out which way is easier. Coming
up in about fifteen minutes from now on Fox Sports Radio,
we will dive into a curious decision by one NFL
head coach involving a coaching search. Right, so, an NFL
coach who gets involved with a coaching search of another team,
(25:19):
we'll have that for year. Fifteen minutes from now on
Fox Sports Radio, so we await kickoff of the game
between the Vikings and the forty Niners. Uh coming up
here in just a couple of moments there. And one
of the updates that we were waiting on is Adam Thealen.
Adam Thealen suffered an injury this week in practice to
(25:41):
his ankle and he it needed stitches, and so I've
been trying to figure out how the hell would he
need stitches in his ankle? What happened? And as it
turns out, the report from Ian Rapp report on NFL
Network earlier today was that Adam Thealen got cleatd by
(26:01):
a teammate in practice, and the cleat went through the shoe,
through the sock, and on the back of his heel
opened up a gash so bad that he thought he
ripped his achilles. So he reached down to feel for
his achilles, thinking maybe it rolled up into his calf,
but it was still attached there. And then they identified
(26:24):
that it was just a really deep cut from a
cleat and he ended up getting four stitches. He is
playing in this game. He is active, Yeah, he's active
for this game. How the hell does that happen on
multiple fronts equipment wise? And why are you if you're
why are they practicing? I mean, I'm assuming they're practicing
outdoors if they were wearing the kind of cleat that
(26:45):
would cut your ankle. No, it could be anything like
they could be practicing indoors and those things that happened. Um,
I'm assuming that he just got in close proximity. You
know how it is like sometimes those guys are working
close together and someone just uh takes a little wider
step than normal kind of steps on the back you
heal and you just you just never know. But with
the technology and the shoes and look, look he I
(27:06):
think he's an Adidas endorsed or sponsored sponsored by Adidas,
you know, like everyone wears these super light shoes and
they don't have a lot of construction to him because
everyone places as a premium on being the fastest athlete
that you can be on the field. And so if
it's not constructed or made of much of anything, and
then another person has own cleats that have a good
(27:28):
little uh spike to it, it certainly can cut through it.
But man, it's definitely not a good look for him
that uh, he is having to endure something that I
should have been protected. You think your shoe would protect
you from some things like that. And the first thing
I thought of was you remember a couple of years
ago in practice leading up to god, was it the
(27:49):
Super Bowl or the a f C Championship game, But
where Brady cut his hand on Rex Burkehead's helmet like
like just like going to hand off, and it was
like a significant like it was a major issue. And
I think that he I don't know if it was
before the divisional round or the a f C title game,
but it was before playoff because I think he played
two games with the cut on his hand. And it's
(28:11):
just crazy timing wise that that would happen as you're
getting ready for the biggest game of the year. And
I mean, it is nuts that Dad is to deal
And I just wonder how you old up because those
stitches and things, whether they gluded or whatever, it still
can be uncomfortable. I wonder if we'll look later in
the game and you'll see like the little blessed body back. Uh.
(28:32):
It's uncommon, but look, man, sometimes guys are able to
play it. I mean, and and the Brady Uh, we
do have an update. Let's go live to our win.
Did Tom Brady cut open his hand on a running
backs helmet insider? Uh? Lead the lap for the latest lead.
Yeah that was before the a f C title game.
There it is, guys, lead, round of applause for lead
to laugh everybody. If you need to know when a
(28:54):
quarterback cut his hand, you go right to lead the
laugh uh coming up later lead the lapple breakdowns. Steve
de Bergh's hand injury for years where he had to
wear that that mandible claw or whatever it was that
Nintendo power gloves he had had splint on his hand.
I don't I don't even know what that is. Um now,
(29:15):
So here's the other part about the stitches. Like if
anybody's ever had a blister on the back of their foot,
you know, all it takes is you to step off
your foot or step down off a ladder or something
like that, or or or push off your foot the
ball or your feet off your toes and it can
get aggravated and it can tear back open on the
(29:37):
back of your heel. I know, just such a such
a random a random I mean like like come on,
like a cleat going like what kind of cleat are
you wearing in if it's auto selected? Like you thinking
the old the old cleats like that we used to
wear about old school guy you know, they're not they're
(29:57):
not wearing those things. But even these other least man like,
she was just so sensedive or whatever that I mean,
it's so light and so thin that it doesn't take
much to kind of I mean, I just I wonder
if that thing's gonna rip open at some Yeah, he's
he's you know, that's that's a that's one of those
uncomfortable type injuries that you've got to worry about. It's
(30:19):
like uh like, like I said, like a blister um,
Like my lady has to anytime she wears high heels,
like she's got to buy band aids to put to
put on the back of her heels because you know
it'll get irritated. I mean, you know, hey, the kind
of clear you know what clear, the kind that are
(30:41):
going to be on very long. That's let me tell you,
the kind the kind that I can afford and pay less.
That's that's all right. So they are underway in the
Bay Area, the Vikings with the ball first. Kirk Cousins
just airmailed Stefen Diggs. I think he thought to Stefan
Diggs was on a rain he made that throw because
(31:02):
it was well over his head. And so the Vikings
have a fourth and eight, they'll be punning the ball away. Uh.
Not an ideal start from Minnesota, um and uh. And
Jimmy G and company will get the ball with an
opportunity after holding a defensively to get after a little
bit here at home. So we will keep you up
to date on that as they are underway. The NFL
(31:22):
Divisional playoffs are here. Bucky Brooks Jonas knocks here on
Fox Sports Radio from the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios.
All right, coming up next, h an interesting twist to
a coaching search in the NFL. Find out who we're
talking about next year on fs are later. Bundle home
on auto with Farmers Insurance and you could save an
average of we know what thing or two about how
(31:44):
to save a buck or two. Call on Farmers to
get a quote today we are Farmers Report teenie might
average savings under my firms for fair insurance changes and
affiliates probusun avlable every state. Alright, Little Stone Temple Pilots,
good stuff, man, I love it. Bucky Brooks Jonas Knox,
Fox Sports Radio. You can listen to this show on
(32:07):
the I Heart Radio app. Coming up in just a
couple of moments an interesting twist to a coaching search
in the National Football League. We will find out what
that is here momentarily on fs ARE, we do have
an update from the Bay Area. It is the first
of four divisional playoff games in the NFL this weekend
and the San Francisco Forty Niners hold the Vikings who
(32:30):
Minnesota got the ball first. San Francisco holds him on
the opening drive, gets the ball back and goes right
down to the field and scores a seven nothing lead
for the forty Niners. And it was Kendrick Borne on
a three yard touchdown catch for San fran who made
that look really really easy to open up the game.
(32:51):
It looked really really easy because it was really easy.
I mean, Jonas, I don't know if you ever played basketball,
but the first thing that you have ever played basket,
I don't know if you ever I don't know if
you play like the thing they teach you how to
shoot as a layup and I think Kyl Shanahan obviously
had Jimmy g shooting lay up after lay up after
lay up after lay up, and it worked out. We
saw at least three or four slants, uh from the
(33:12):
inside receiver with a little run action fake in front
of it. And what it does is it puts the
linebackers in a bond. Do I react to the run
or do I sit back and play the slant? And
by reacting to the run, it really creates easy throws
for Jimmy Garoppolo. Um, they got him into a rhythm
five for six, sixt or seven yards. He's often rolling.
We will see what Mike Zimmer does to kind of
(33:33):
take away some of those layups now. I mean, look,
it's not ideal. And we were on the air last
week in watching the Texans and the Bills, and of
course Houston came back and won that game, and so
good for Houston. But while we were watching it, the
way that the game started absolutely the worst possible start
for a team, uh, in a playoff game, especially Houston
(33:55):
getting down early and not really having any answers and
and getting confidence for Josh Allen making his first ever
playoffs start. I gotta feel that Minnesota is in the
same spot here Jimmy garoppolo first ever playoffs spot spot
and he goes right down the field and owns them
on the opening drive. This is a a huge huge
drive I think from Minnesota here. Yeah, I mean it's
(34:16):
a huge drive, but I think, look, it's it's a marathon,
it's not a sprint. Um, they need to slow and
control of the game. It would be nice if you're
Minnesota on offense, if you can have a drive that
has a couple of first downs, you get the ball
to at least midfield before you have to punt or
you're taking into score. Uh, you want to flip the
field a little bit, and you want to give Mike
Zimmer time to adjust to what the forty nine has
(34:37):
showed you with a terrific opening script. A lot of
time left too early, kind of panic. Uh. And so
Minnesota with the football on a first intent And here's
how the score sounded courtesy of the forty Niners Radio network.
Here's Jimmy Garoppolo first and goal three yard line fix
the gun run throws. That is Kendrick Bard touchdown. Let's
(35:01):
go on the call there, And why am I drawing
a blank on the call? The broadcaster who former Raiders
broadcaster Greg Papa is it or Bob Papa? Yah, Bob
Papa who also did boxing for HBO. I mean listen,
like like you want to, I mean, come one. Like
everything comes back to boxing. It's just the way this
(35:22):
world works. But Greg, Papa, you've got a wonder the
way that things ended with the Raiders, He's gonna feel
pretty good about himself right now. I mean, getting the
call playoff games. A little Bay Area controversy there for
people that aren't familiar, didn't end exactly as they would hope.
And he's been very critical of the Raiders organization since.
So good to see him call in a playoff game,
all right, Bucky Brooks. The Cleveland Browns don't have a
(35:46):
head coach, and because misery loves company, they also don't
have a general manager. Well, the Browns have allegedly finished
all their interviews with head coaching candidates, one of which
was Josh mcdown Josh McDaniels, and according to a report,
Bill Belichick would not allow Josh McDaniels to move up
(36:09):
his interviews that were already scheduled, even after the Patriots
were eliminated. I don't know if this is true. I
don't know why Belichick would refuse to allow him to
move up his interviews if their season was already over.
Do you buy the report? What do you make of
it if it's true, Well, I mean it's up to
the discretion of the of the coach. Um. Bill Belichick
(36:31):
has every right to hold and retain Josh McDaniels. Day
rewarded him with a contract last year. He has extension,
he's on the contract and normally us see head coaches
always want to uh give their assistance opportunities. But for
Bill Belichick this makes sense because he doesn't know yet
what he's doing. But Tom Brady and so obviously if
Tom Brady comes back, he would like to have the
(36:53):
play caller with him. So why not make it a
little challenging for that play caller to get a job
if he does become the front on her uh for
the Brown's job. And so it's a little gamesmanship. But
also I think is Bill Belichick doing what's in the
best interests of the Patriots And I really worried about
what's in the best interests of Josh mc daniels, which
is his right uh And Joe Judge, and this was
(37:13):
also pointed out in the report that Joe Judge you know,
was allowed to go and interview when everyone like there
was no issue with him interviewing early and that was
all fine? Is it? Is it petty on Belichick's part
to not want McDaniels to move his interviews up because
Belichick doesn't. He doesn't strike me as a guy who
wants to screw over his assistance and and make it
(37:34):
harder for them to get a job. I think he
he remembers what that was like trying to interview for jobs,
and he's talked about how great Bill Parcels was to
him during the process and getting him ready for those jobs.
I just find it hard to believe that he would
make it even more difficult for Josh McDaniels to find
a gig. Look, man like he may value Josh McDaniels
(37:55):
more than he valued Joe Judge, and so he wants
to make sure that he keeps him valuable member of
his staff around as long as possible. And so look,
that's his right. I can't begrudge him. Uh if you,
Josh mcdanie you can't necessarily have it both ways. You
can't uh sign and have the security of the long
term deal with the Patriots while also sniffing around for
another job, Like that's just what you gave up. Like
(38:18):
you can't you can't have both, So you have to
make a decision. And that's what Bill Belichick is doing.
He's making him kind of live up to that deal. Yeah,
so you can't, you know, be in a relationship and
also have a bumble account, is what you're saying. I mean,
technically it's probably not the best thing. Okay, you hear that, Lee,
It's not the best thing. But it depends because bumble
you can just network. Maybe that's trying to make here.
(38:39):
Maybe you're just networking, you know. I mean, Coach, I'm
not into snap face. I have no idea what the
sites are. I'm not it's not really my comment. I'm
not either, coach Um. So so we will wait to
see what happens with the With the Josh McDaniel situation,
I always felt like, and I know that they can't
do this because of the Rooney rule and you've got
to go through that. I always felt like the reason
(39:02):
Josh McDaniels turned down the Colts opportunity and went back
to the Patriots is because I wonder if he was
maybe promised something from the Patriots and maybe there was
sort of a hush hush. Hey, I'm not sure how
much longer Bill Parcels is going to be here. But
when he does decide to hang him up, we'd like
you to be the next coach. Does it? Does it
(39:24):
does kind of feel like that, right, because I mean,
how many times can you interview for a gig or
turned down a gig before you have to ask the
question does he really want said gig? So that that
just makes me wonder what the situation is with Josh McDaniels.
We have got an update. We have got an update
in the Bay Area and the Minnesota Vikings seven plays
(39:45):
seventy nine yards a four minute drive and are looking
to tie the game now after a touchdown pass to
Stephen Digs. Minnesota now down seven to six, extra point
pending in the Bay Area. And uh, the Minnesota Vikings
who needed a big drive and they got a big
drive from Kirk Cousins. That's a hell of a response,
(40:08):
Bucky Brooks. I mean, it's a nice response. I mean, look,
I have long believe that the Minnesota Vikings had the
best one to punch in a perimeter. We saw Adamland
and Stefens make place. Yeah, huge, huge development. We will
have more on the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs
next year on fs are Well, it's all about the
counter punch. Who can CounterPunch because it's been established that
(40:29):
one team in the NFL already has. We will get
into that here coming up in just a couple of moments,
Bucky Brooks, Jonas Knox, Fox Sports Radio. You can check
out this show on the I Heart Radio app and
on every single one of our Fox Sports Radio affiliates.

Update on the game in the Bay Area, the forty
Niners at midfield have a third and ten with two
minutes left to go on the first quarter, and Jimmy
(41:11):
Garoppolo with a you know what on the table type
throw as he was being sacked. It was a floater. Uh,
maybe should have been picked off, but it got there
and a first down converted. But Jimmy Garoppolo took a
hit there. Yeah, little gampy, Yeah he got cracked, little
Gampy on that look it was a great throw. I
won't say it was a great throw. It was a
(41:31):
fortunate throw. Balls throw, yea, because the ball. I mean,
that's what I thought was happening. I thought it was
about up. If you're the Minnesota Vikings, you have to
be encouraged. You're beginning to get hits on the quarterback,
and those things matter. Jimmy Garoppolo has been able to
throw comfortably from the pocket, but that time he finally
was able to get hit. You the Minnesota Vikings that
(41:53):
those are the kind of hits that you want to
put on the quarterback. Here's the other thing I want
to ask you. So they're on a bye week, they
haven't played in a couple of weeks. I mean, they
can take you while to get rusty. That first drive.
I mean they look like they hit the ground running,
but I mean physically, when you haven't taken a hit
in a couple of weeks. I mean, like the first
time you get cracked, I would imagine you're kind of thinking, WHOA.
(42:14):
I mean maybe I mean that one, that one he
took one. He took a nice, little solid shot that
was a little different um and so so we will
have you keep you updated on that game. Now, if
you're wondering how we got to this point to where
they're tied at seven apiece there in the Bay Area
with a minimum and change left in the first quarter,
well it was easy. The San Francisco forty Niners went
(42:36):
down the field and courtesy the forty Niners Radio Network,
the forty Niners, uh at with the ball at the
three yard line. Uh, you know, just kind of mixing
it up. A quick slant here, Greg Kittle there, Emmanuel
Sanders here, and next thing, you know, with a first
and goal from the three. The forty Niners did this.
There's Jimmy Garoppolo first and goal, three yard line fakes
(42:57):
the gun run throws drid Ford touchdown. Let's go, Who
the hell is that? Who's cutting the wrestling promo? Is
that is that Tim Ryan? I know? Is that Tim Ryan?
(43:19):
Tim Ryan? Isn't Tim Ryan doing the color broadcast for
the Tim Ryan former? I really used to work here
at Fox Sports Radio, if I'm not mistaken. So so
the forty and Iers jumped out early, Bucky and I
after the score we're talking about at the beginning of
the drive, big drive for the Vikings respond here the
crowd getting into it. You're on the road again. How
(43:41):
do you respond? And it was Kirk Cousins finding a
much more happier this week. Stefon Diggs to tie it up.
He's gonna loop one left side. Digs caught it to touchdown.
Bunch Stefon Diggs any fires the ball into the stands
(44:01):
and at seven six San Francisco extra point was good
on the Vikings radio network, and Minnesota ties it up
at seven apiece, and now the forty Niners have the
ball and they are trying to drive. So if it's
all about counterpunching, we're seeing both teams be able to
deliver a counter shot in this game. And it looks
like we're shaping up for a very good football game
(44:22):
in the Bay Area. Yeah, we we we expect that
this would be a game they went down to the
fourth quarter, and I think that's what it's shaping up
to be. Um like a great, outstanding opening script for
the forty Niners. But look, Minnesota comes right back. They score,
and we're beginning to see jem Garoppolo rode and he
got sacked in here we go. I mean, you begin
(44:42):
to see the adjustments. Well, he's not he's not a
mobile quarterback. He can move around a little bit. I
mean he moved around a little bit. He's pretty athletic
for the position. But I think the bigger thing Minnesota
is being more aggressive. I felt like their first drive
they kind of set back on the heels and waited. Uh,
they were kind of trying to be counterpunchers. Now I
believe they kind of trying to take the fight to them.
Let me because so they're just showed a play replay
(45:05):
on NBC and we'll paint the picture as best we can. So.
Jimmy Garoppolo suffered the injury to his left knee um
last year in Kansas City, non contact injury, which, by
the way, I think people forget how significant that knee
injury was. That wasn't just an MCL sprain. Uh you know,
that was a multiple ligament tear for Jimmy Garoppolo and
a real rehab. And he was nearly intercepted there as
(45:27):
he tried to go over the middle to great to
George Kittle. But he's got this knee brace and a
pretty large knee brace on his left knee and he
just got rolled up on on that left knee. Now
nothing happened because he had the knee brace on. I
know Alabama has done this in college to where it's
mandated that alignment offensive linemen have to wear knee braces
(45:50):
just in case something like this happens. Where do you
stand on making players wear that stuff just to be
safe in case they do get rolled up on herself.
So here's the thing. It comes to quarterbacks. A lot
of times you'll see quarterbacks put a knee brace on
their front leg. Uh, their front leg is the leg
that is most exposed them in the Tom Brady injury.
So you will see people without an injury, they will
(46:12):
have a knee brace on if you're right handed, on
the left leg, because that's the leg that is stepping out,
that's the one that you step into for your throws.
That is the one that is typically open and exposed
for the defense to hit um. Jimmy Garoppolo has a
knee brace on his right leg because that's the injured leg.
And what we saw he did. He came up gimpy
because they rolled up on him. They rolled up primarily
(46:35):
on his ankle. But you just never know because he
also kind of shot forward and landed and ricocheted a
little bit. But man, you want to put the licks
on the quarterback because ultimately it makes them change. They
all change once they've gotten hit. Jimmy Garoppolo is starting
to take more shots and we will see if it
impacts his game. Now. He does have the knee brace
(46:55):
on the left knee, so I'm seeing that now. So
he does have it on on his front knee. Was
it his left or his right knee that he popped
last year in Kansas City? That I can't remember? Okay, Yeah,
I can tell you this, uh and this can we
can we can confirm this. It was either his writers
left nee, that's what we can confirm. It was not
his middle knee. And there's a conversation that could be
(47:16):
had there. Uh And you can probably figure that one
out on your own. But yeah, he does have a
a bulky knee brace on on that left knee. He
was rolled up a little bit, but here we are.
So it was his left knee suffered the injury on
all right, So so knee brace on the left knee,
non contact in Kansas City, which is why I was
more patient with Garoppolo coming into the season. Do you
(47:37):
remember and and this is there's been so many football games,
so if you don't remember this, I need to get
a life. That's why I remember this. But the preseason
game against the Denver Broncos, it was a Monday night
game and he did not look good at all, and
Nick Mullins came in and played really well. And so
the thought was, man, you know it's not it's not
setting stone that Garoppolo is going to start every game
(47:58):
this season if he strugg goals. I don't think Kyle
Shanahan would have any issue going to Nick Mullins. And
I said at the time, look, coming off an injury
like that, not only do you have to worry about
getting back to because they always say you're not actually
right from a torn a c L for like what
eighteen months like around then, it takes about two years
for you before you begin to feel right in terms
(48:21):
of you don't worry about it, you're you're out of
your head um, you begin to trust it. You make
hard cuts on that leg um. So it takes a
little while for you to get beyond that part of it.
And for Jimmy garoppolot to had the season that he had.
I mean, look, as it's a credit to his um toughness,
his courage to be able to run back on the
(48:41):
field and to play. But he's still hasn't fully gotten
back to form in terms of like inside and how
he feels about himself and what he can do and
not worry about like hey, I'm gonna get hit and
I'm not going to get up in those things. And
and with this offense, I mean it's not like he's
got a lot of experience in this offense. I mean
this is his first real full year in the offense
(49:04):
because he was limited the year before. He only played
a handful of games last year before the injury. So
I don't even think we're seeing Jimmy Garoppolo anywhere close
to his peak, Like I don't, I don't. I don't
think we've seen it at all. And so I was
more patient coming into the season. You know, that being said,
because he's a former Patriot, because he goes out to
(49:24):
dinner with porn stars, people want to be extra critical
and he got paid when he got paid, so people
are going to be overly critical of Jimmy Garoppolo. But
I think the way that he played this season, and
you mentioned it, in those massive games to where in
a three week stretch, I think they played Green Bay,
New Orleans and Baltimore if I'm not mistaken, and he
played pretty damn well in that stretch of games. I
(49:47):
think if you're a forty Niner fan, you gotta be
pleased with what you got. And the contract looks better
and better as a year's pass by, and better it
is aged pretty well. He has had a remarkable season.
Um cal Shanahan has done a great job of putting
him in situations succeed and he's done a great job
of taking advantage of those opportunities. Do San Francisco forty
Niners are sitting in a position where they got to
(50:07):
buy there in the divisional round, they could move on
and get to the championsire Round and maybe even a
Super Bowl. So you have to feel good about having
a franchise quarterback and the team is trending in the
right direction. Bucky Brooks showing the knocks here on Fox
Sports Radio. So your for your money at nearly a
muffed pump by the Minnesota Vikings. For your money, Minnesota's
(50:28):
got the best one to punch at wide receiver in
the NFL. Yeah, in terms of playmakers. Absolutely, Um, you
look at the skills that Adam Feeling and Stefan Dicks have.
They are outstanding route runners. They really can put you
in a bind and twist you up as defensive backs,
and what you're seeing when they're given opportunities, they are
(50:49):
fantastic winning one on one battles. Now this offense has
been changed to really feature Dalvin Cook in the running game,
but I've always believed that the danger with the minnesot
the Vikings comes from not only having to defend their run,
but having to have enough guys that can defend that
one two punch that they have on the outside. All right,
so better than Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry in terms
(51:09):
of skills they are. They are more skilled, they're better
route runners. They do a better job of consistently getting open. Uh.
There's a trust and a discipline that comes to being
able to play the position. I think it's easier for
quarterbacks to trust Feeling and Diggs because there's not as
much freestyle freelancing front. Feeling and Digs better than Godwin
(51:30):
and Mike Evans in Tampa Bay, I think so. I
think in terms of like the way they play the
skills that they display and possess. Yeah, I would go
with those guys. How about that? How about that skull?
Stand up? Where's Ragnar when you need them? Where's that
to that mascot they kicked out once they got a
new stadium with you? Is that a galahorn? Sam? Is
that it is? That? What they call that? A gallahorn? That?
(51:51):
Who cares? It's a juicy lucy horn? You've read a
Juicy Lucy in Minneapolis, by the way, you know that is?
I don't know what it is. It sounds like it
sounds like something I know, Yeah, it's it's not to
hear it sounds like something. It sounds like something Rob
Parker goes to. But I know the Juicy Lucy is
a Burger patty that they stuffed with cheese and it's
(52:14):
in Minneapolis. I had never heard about it until a
couple of years ago after the super Bowl was in
Minneapolis and people were telling me about it. But I've
seen a maid and it just looks like cardiac arrest,
Like if there was a look to it. It's just
cheese stuffed inside of burger. Sam. I don't know if
it's good. I mean it seems like it would shut
your entire body down. Uh, Sam, have you add a
(52:36):
juicy lucy? I did? I had one actually when I
was in St. Paul. What about Burger this past August?
That too, both at the same time. No juice, No,
I do. The juicy lucy is good. Um had it
in St. Paul this past August and I liked it.
Was you can't have a beer with it? Sure you can?
Why not? Really? What do you mean you can't have
one week? I mean, that's just it's too much that
(52:57):
just it doesn't seem like it would go together. It's
just lick with cheese coming out of the patties like
cheese whiz. No, it's it's actually cheddar, but they grill
it so it finally it'll just melt in the center.
You could eat this, all right? Uh. Bucky Brooks Knox
here on Fox Sports Radio from the Geos Radio studios.
All right, coming up next, we're going to have an
(53:19):
update on the situation in Cleveland with the Browns. Things
are getting very interesting involving the the search for a
coach and a general manager, and we'll have that for
you next year on Fox Sports Radio. And the rest
of that winter means it's time to bundle up your insurance.
Bundle home on auto with farmers and you could save
(53:39):
an average of farmers to get a quote today. Are
farmers might averageting under my firms for fair insurance exchanges
and affiliates brought on available in every state. Jonahs knocks
Bucky Brooks here on Fox Sports Radio from the Geico
Fox Sports Radio Studios. Coming up here a little over
ten minutes from now on fs ARE, we will have
(54:01):
the latest update from the divisional game in the NFL
Playoffs between the Vikings and the forty Niners. They are
tied at seven in the second quarter, the forty Niners
with the football nearly turned it over um. But I
think san Fran did recover that. If I'm not mistaken,
I don't know. I think it right, Okay, So we
(54:22):
we will. We'll let you know as to what the
if there was a change of possession in that game.
It's been kind of a wild game, san Fran jumped
out early. Minnesota responded, they've been having a punting fest
back and forth. So we will let you know how
that shapes up here in the Bay area. Right now,
she is Mary Kay Cabot covers the Browns for Cleveland
dot Com and the Plane Dealer, uh, and a team.
(54:46):
It's it's the gift that keeps on giving. Mary, Oh
my goodness. Yes, I've been punting it up. This is
my coaching search overall, uh, the first one and it's
my fifth one only since. I mean, so, there's that
(55:06):
shirt that's going around to where like all the quarterbacks
names are on the jerseys. Um, so that's that's kind
of made the rounds. And and I know that because
I know a couple of guys personally whose names are
on that jersey as far as all the quarterbacks that
have played for the Browns over the past however many
years it is. I think you need to make your
(55:28):
own shirt. With all the coaching changes, I think you've
really got to jump on that and try and try
and sell those. Yeah, I've had that suggestion this week.
I've had a number of people tell me that I
should be writing a book about all of this. So
who knows, I might have to give that some thought. Yeah,
it's been absolutely insane. I feel like I have woken up.
(55:50):
I just have this recurring dream where I'm in a
coaching search that never ends. What is the what is
the latest? Because we know we've heard that the coaching interview?
Are you just tell me? Because there's so many reports
out there that it's hard to keep track of what
exactly is happening with the Browns. Well, right now they're
reaching out tom candidates and some of these candidates are
sort of connected with a couple of their head coaching candidates.
(56:16):
So you've got Andrew Barry, uh and he pairs with
Kevin Stefanski. Then you've got a Dodds from the Colts
he would pair with Robert Sala. Are still a couple
of names, a couple of guys that are you know,
in play for for the head coach job. They haven't
reached a final decision yet. I would expect it to
(56:37):
come soon. I mean it could even come tonight look
out tonight. But if not, I would think by tomorrow
we will probably know who the guy is. You know,
Mary Kay? What uh what are they looking for this
time around? Last time they went with obviously a first
time head coach, before you had a coach who had
been a head coach previously. What exactly are the Browns
looking for this time around? When it comes to a
(56:58):
head coach. I think, more so than anything is they're
looking for like a very strong leader that can be
the you know, really the voice and the face of
this franchise and then commands the room and had the
locker room look up to him and respect him. That
was missing with Freddy Kitchens. It was too loosey, goosey.
The guys didn't respect him well enough. It was not organized,
(57:20):
and it just wasn't what they needed. And I think
they need a firm hand, especially for the roster that
they have assembled. Was Mary Kay Cabot joining us here
on Fox Sports Radio. Covers the Browns for Cleveland dot
Com and also The Plane Dealer. You can get her
on Twitter at Mary Kay Cabot. I'm sure this is
along with the number of coaches that have been there,
this is probably your what are we going to say,
(57:40):
thousand or two thousand interview you've done this week covering
the Browns. I've been you know, I've done a lot,
and uh, it's amazing that I can actually remember that
I still have another one coming up right right, the
most part I've done. Okay, So do you think that
Josh McDaniel, some people have floated this out there that
him getting on the plane and not being offered the
(58:02):
job right away was maybe bad news in regards to
him not getting the job. Do you buy into that
or is this just they're really taking as patient of
an approach and doing their due diligence And it was
going to be Josh and Daniels going back to Boston
regardless until they finished their search for the GM. You know,
(58:23):
I would have to think that if it's your last
interview and you absolutely want to hire that guy, that
you're not going to let him out the door. He
brought his wife here. I mean, it was everything was
right there to make that happen if that's what they
wanted to do, but they were not ready to do
that yet. I don't think he's been eliminated yet. But
I don't think, uh, you know, I don't think it's
(58:44):
super hot around the front burner, knowing that they could
have wrapped it up yesterday if they wanted to. You know,
Mary Kay, when when I when I think about UM,
Josh mcdannes, and I heard you talk about pairing with
the general manager and how important it is. UM. Somebody
came into building Jim Schwartz, and I know Jim Swartz
hasn't been necessarily linked to Andrew Berry, but Jim Swarts
(59:07):
offers a couple of things that are intriguing in my mind.
He's been a head coach before, he kind of deals
in that world, the analytics and the football world. How
legitimate of a candidate do you believe he is when
he comes down to comparing him to some of the
other names that have been mentioned. I think he's legitimate.
I think he has a legitimate candidate. He saw some
things in him that they really liked, and one of
(59:29):
those things is what we've already talked about, that just tough,
hard nosed leader, somebody that's been a head coach before,
and uh, you know, would be able to command the
respect of the players. And I think that there is
a genuine sentiment that Jim Schwartz Swarts would be successful,
uh reasonably, not just reasonably so successful, but very successful
(59:52):
in his second stint as a head coach. I do
believe that he is a legit candidate. Mary Kay Cabot
covers the Browns for Cleveland dot Com and The Plain Dealer,
joining us here on Fox Sports Radio. Jonas knocks Bucky
Brooks here on FS are, Um, what is the status
of Odell Beckham? Do you see a trade possibly this
off season? Or they committed to making it work with O'Dell.
(01:00:14):
You know, I think that once the new people get
into place, I think that's something that everybody's going to
have to sit down and try to figure out. Does
it make sense from a money standpoint, from a you know,
from me on the field standpoint off the field, just
team chemistry, what he's got going with Baker Mayfield? If
O'Dell wants to be here, So I think the plan
(01:00:35):
seems to be to continue on with Odell. But I
just think it's something they will just all need to
explore when the new guys get in place, you know,
Mary kay and and thinking about the team. Uh what
what what should make of Baker Mayfield's sophomore season? Uh?
He dabs with everybody as a rookie, but last year
it appeared that the wheels fell off a little bit.
(01:00:57):
How much pressure is on him heading into year three
to get back on track and be the guy that
they took number one? Overall, the pressure is on him.
The pressure is going to be on the new coach,
uh and everybody surrounding Baker Mayfield to make sure that
he gets back on track and he's the number one
pick that that the Browns made him. Uh, that is
going to be a very high priority for this season.
(01:01:18):
They need to know do they need to pick up
his fifth year option? Are they going to pay him
the big bucks? And is he going to be the guy?
Remember Goody. They've talked to uh outside of the organization,
and inside of the organization people still believe he is
that guy. So I think it's just a matter of
getting the right coaching, surrounding, surrounding him with the right people,
and seeing if they just can't get him rolling again.
(01:01:39):
Mary gut feeling um coach GM Combo that gets the job.
If you had to place a wager on it, who
would it be? You know, every hour I go in
a different direction. But since you caught me here at
five something on Saturday afternoon, the fact that that I'm
just sitting here putting the finishing touches on this Andrew
(01:02:00):
Berry story. I wrote a column last week saying the
kind of alignment that Jimmy Handslum is looking for in
his organization could be achieved by Paul de Podesta, Kevin
Stefanski and Andrew Berry. So if you're going to put
my feet to the fighter right now and ask me
for a combo, I'll say that that's one that that
would seem to make sense to them. I would think, well,
that's the beauty of radio. We can just edit it
(01:02:21):
if you get it wrong afterwards, and then it will
make it seem like you got it right. I mean
that that's the beauty of radio after the fact. Please do.
I would greatly appreciate that. Mary kay Cabot covers the
Browns for Cleveland dot Com and The Plane Dealer. Get
her on Twitter at Mary kay Cabot. She's a fantastic
follow has all the information on the ongoing search for
(01:02:42):
a general manager and a head coach with the Cleveland Browns.
And if she gets it right and it's Stefanski who
is the next head coach congratulator on Twitter. If she
didn't get it right, then you misheard her. She met
the guy who actually did get the job. So we'll
go ahead and establish that. And Mary, thanks so much.
We always appreciate I know you've gotten a lot of these,
so we appreciate it. Few minutes of your time. Yeah,
And if I go on a radio show in another hour.
(01:03:03):
It could be another head coach that I named, So
don't hold me to That's fine. Listen, you gotta head
your bets. I I totally get it. I do it
all the time. Thanks Mary, we appreciate it. Okay, thank you,
Jonah Stocks, Bucky Brooks. Here on Fox Sports Radio, we
do have great news. There's a quick and easy way
you could save money. Switched to Geico. It only takes
fifteen minutes to see if you could say fifteen center
more on car insurance. Go to Geico dot com and
(01:03:23):
see how much you could save. Uh. Coming up next
year on fs ARE, there's a question to be asked
involving two quarterbacks in the NFL playing this weekend. We
will have that for you next year on fs ARE,
But for all the latest from around the world of sports,
including what is happening in the Bay Area between the
forty Niners and the Vikings. It is Ralph Evan. Well,
(01:03:45):
thank you very much, Jonas, and that is the question,
what is happening. Dan's play at the drive. It's a
true use check ahead of Coleman Kittle goes in most
they get a Colman off the left side. Touch down
can be our forty Niners radio network with the call
(01:04:07):
San Francisco. With that fourteen to seven lead over the
Minnesota Vikings seven oh two to play in the second quarter,
already a good performance came for the Niners in this one.
They have fifty three yards on the ground, ninety six
yards in the year, a hundred and forty nine total
yards of offense as they've moved the ball very well
(01:04:28):
on two scoring drives. Meanwhile, NBA action, it's underway in
Houston as the Rockets have a thirteen twelve lead over Minnesota.
That's with three thirty five to play in the first quarter.
A quick five points for Russell Westbrook in this game
James Harden two points, but already for turnovers for the
Rockets as they host the Timberwolves. Great news is a
(01:04:50):
quick way you could save money. Switched to Geico to
Geico dot Com in a fifteen minutes, you could save
fifteen per cent or more on your car insurance. On
the college hart would Number one Gonzaga lead a loyal
mayor amount inside of twelve minutes to play in the
second half, while number eighteen Virginia now leads Syracuse to
(01:05:12):
play in the second half of that game as we
sent it back to the answer to the eternal question,
that is with Jonas Knox and Bucky Brooks. Thanks Ralph,
and we are comedy Alive here from the Geico Fox
Sports Radio studios, where it's easy to save fifteen cent
or more on car insurance with Geico. Go to Geico
dot com call eight under nine seven auto. The only
hard part figuring out which way is easier. So after
(01:05:34):
that long touchdown drive by the forty Niners that gave
them a fourteen seven lead, the Vikings got a good
kick return uh into uh their around their own forty
yard line. Uh, and now have the football on a
third and ten and they will be short, So here
we go. Uh. The Vikings will be punting from about midfield.
San fran will get the ball back under five and
(01:05:56):
minutes under five and a half minutes left to go
in the first half. And remember Minnesota got the ball
first to start the game. So if the forty Niners
can put another drive together, we could be looking at
things getting a little ugly in about a half hour,
forty five minutes from now here, Bucky, it could be
like if everyone who's watching the game, you're here coaches
talk about this uh and it's called the middle eight.
(01:06:19):
The middle of eight is the last four minutes of
the first half, the first four minutes of the second half.
A lot of games that decided during this middle eight,
and what you're looking for the next eight minutes of
this contest. If the San Francisco forty Niners score going
in before the half, they get the ball coming out,
they have an opportunity to take a game that is
fourteen seven and potentially stretch it out to twenty eight
(01:06:41):
to seven before the Minnesota Vikings touched the ball again.
And so the urgency that the Minnesota Vikings have to
play with they got to make sure that they don't
allow the forty nine is to have what we call
a double score, back to back scores ending a half
coming out. A lot of pressure on Mike Zimmer and
his staff to make sure they find a way to
kind of get this done. And that's look, if you know,
(01:07:01):
and sometimes you don't have a choice. A lot of teams,
most teams differ nowadays. Correct, Yeah, for that, because if
you can hold them, then you know, in that first
possession and you say have a lead going into the
half time you get the ball first. It's an opportunity
to really open up the game. Here's a question half way,
because Kirk Cousins and Jimmy Garoppolo there's a lot of comparisons,
(01:07:24):
a lot of similarities. Um even look, Kyle Shanahan worked
well with Kirk Cousins in Washington, and so that the
idea of if Jimmy Garoppolo didn't work out, maybe there's
a re reuniting Kirk Cousins with Kyle Shanahan and San
Francisco at some point. But there's a lot of similarities
between the two quarterbacks. But I'll ask you this, which
(01:07:46):
quarterback is best suited to make a comeback? Garoppolo or
Kirk Cousins. I would say probably Garoppolo because we've seen
him do it. We've seen him this season have some
game winning drives, uh some comebacks. I think is he
probably has more ability to play off the script than
(01:08:06):
Kirk Cousins. Kirk Cousins, to me, is a guy that
he needs to kind of play on the script. I
don't know if he could be an improv actor, you know.
I don't know if you could just throw him up
there and say, hey, bang and react. He kind of
has to have everything lined up so that he can perform.
I think Jimmy Garoppolo has a little more in his
game that allows him to kind of function and thrive
better at the end of games. So if that's the case,
(01:08:29):
this is a massive As you talked about the middle eight,
this is a massive middle eight because this game could
get out of hand and and could be a rap
if they get two scores here and they go up
twenty one. You're not liking kirk cousins chances to get
back in this game, and and and also and also
you don't like the way their their offense has constructed.
Their offense is designed to be an offense that always
(01:08:51):
has the threat of the run to create opportunities for
the past. You don't want Kirk Cousins to get in
what we call a straight dropback game where everyone in
the stadium knows that now we have too. It becomes
a passing game, becomes a seven on seven passing league
type deal, and you're throwing against complex coverages and they're
like the Vikings have to stay close enough where the
run is a viable threat. Um if it's not a threat,
(01:09:13):
then it just kind of changes the way that their
offenses is defended. How many playoff games did you play? Um,
I think I played in a grand total of maybe six.
Let's see, there are a couple, Um, Jacksonville, we want
on a run, so I played one to three, Kansas City.
(01:09:36):
I played in one, uh, Green Bay. I wasn't active
for those, So I think a total of maybe four. Okay, so,
but but point being, you played in enough playoff games
to where you've got enough experience and I'm actually I'm
showing it now. So you played in I'm seeing Yeah,
I think four games, three with Jacksonville, one with Kansas City.
(01:09:59):
So correct, were at any earliest point in any of
those games when you knew, oh, we're gonna lose now,
I didn't. I didn't since that in any of those.
I didn't since that in any of those. Like we
felt like all those. The Kansas City game was the
one we were the favorite, we had home field, the
game was tight, but never since that. Okay, well it's
about to go down. Um, New England at New England
(01:10:22):
you lost twenty to six. But that was a late
interception I think ODIs Smith made picked up a fumble
at the end. It kind of stretch it out, but
it was a game that was tight the entire time.
So Nah, the playoff games that I I played in, um,
I felt good about and then, uh, what's not listed?
Because I was inactive for those games. In Green Bay
we went on the road, we beat the San Francisco
(01:10:44):
for now, we played at home against Atlanta, went on
the road and beat San Francisco forty nine. Is lost
to the Dallas Cowboys in the championship game. Um, in
those you still had a sense of, Hey, we're good,
we'll be okay. Uh. The Dallas game, the championship game,
that was a little tough for because Dallas was I
mean Dallas, I mean vintage Dallas was tough. Um. Well,
(01:11:05):
so let me ask you this. If you guys had
beaten New England, if you if you do the impossible,
you go on the road three straight weeks, you beat
Buffalo thirty seven, Bucky Brooks and the Jags beat Denver
thirty seven on the road. It was number one seed. Yeah,
if you go on the road and you beat New England,
you would have faced Green Bay in the Super Bowl,
the one Super Bowl bread farv one. How would you
(01:11:26):
have liked your chances against five in that Super Bowl.
I mean it was tough. I would say that they
were a better team, but we were a hot team. Uh.
They were awesome that year because you versus Desmond Howard
in a kickoff Bowl. I mean, come on, Bay, I
mean it would have been fun to participate in that.
But like that year, I spent the first half of
the season in Green Bay, so it would have been
one of those games that it was very, very personal
(01:11:46):
to meet. But they were not. That team in Green
Bay was loaded. That's the Reggie White. Uh. Andre Rosen
had had made an appearance. Plays and there goes Jimmy
Garofol reception doing with Jimmy Garopolo. All right, so update
interception by Jimmy Garoppolo. Uh. And it was Kendricks who
made the interception for the Vikings. And we said it, man,
(01:12:08):
this is an the middle eight. This is a massive
situation for Minnesota down fourteen seven. They need somebody to
make a play on defense to get the ball back
so they can try and hopefully tie this game heading
into halftime with the forty Niners getting it at the
start of the second half, and now Minnesota will have
the ball off the interception at the forty nine or
thirty yard line. Massive play from I mean great, great
(01:12:31):
play by their defense. And we've said it. There are
four or five plays every game where Jimmy Garoppolo has
one of these things and it's just a matter of
if the defense catches them. That is a great intercession
by Eric Kendricks. But this is the important part. What
does Kirk cousin and what does this offense do with
the opportunity? Can they get points? And I would say
seven is not threes? Those are deciding factors in these games.
(01:12:54):
Can you punch it in and get touchdowns as opposed
to selling field goals? All right, so in that game,
I want to mention this real quick, the a f
C title game that you guys lost, because had you
gone to the Super Bowl, you could potentially be the
reason that Brett Farves not a Hall of Famer. And
then again, I'm not trying to the would have been
a lot of fun. Mark Brunel through two interceptions. Are
we blaming him solely for the loss? No, we're not
(01:13:14):
blame We don't blame him for the loss at all,
because here's what I would say, you happened. This was
a game where we had been in the playoffs. Jimmy
Smith had been on fire. We've been using a lot
of three wide receivers. Is Jimmy Smith, Keenan McCardell, those
guys that played great. Uh. There are some some rumblings
that during that game, Tom Coughlin might have played a
bigger part in the offensive game plan because we used
(01:13:36):
more too tight end Tesston we had used and there
was an interception where we were going in where we
ran a play that we typically we run out of
eleven personnel. With three receivers on the field, we had
two tight ends. And I want to say, big play,
Clay Willie, big play, Clay picked off a pass us. Yeah,
Pete Mitchell I forgot about Pete Mitchell. He had a
(01:13:56):
He had a big game for you guys. So yeah,
that was the two tight ends. You we're talking about
their Pete Mitchell. I forgot about Pete Mitchell. Yeah, like it.
We hadn't been winning that way. We have been winning
because Jimmy Smith had been going off, Keenan mccardale had
played will not because Pete Mitchell was kissing above the cat.
The Pete Mitchell game, all right, Bucky Brooks, Jonas Knox
(01:14:17):
here on Fox Sports Radio from the Geico Fox Sports
Radio Studios. So we have the very latest from the
Vikings forty Niners in the Bay Area, plus one of
the most talked about segments on sports talk radio. Look,
probably not, but we're gonna embellish it if we can.
But it's yours and it's next here on Fox Sports Radio,
Bucky Brooks Jonas Knox here odd Fox Sports Radio from
(01:14:39):
the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios. Uh update on the
playoff game currently taken place in the Bay Area. The
Niners have a fourteen ten lead over the Minnesota Vikings.
A thirty nine yard field goal by the Vikings to
cut the lead to four thirty seconds left in the
first half. Niners fourteen ten, three points off the Jimmy
(01:15:01):
Garoppolo interception. UH So, listen, it's better than being down
seven going into halftime. As Bucky pointed out, um san
Franz getting the ball to start the second half. So
if you can close the gap a little bit, maybe
get a stop. I think that's where you can kind
of turn the momentum in this game. Because you mentioned
it at the time, you trust Garoppolo being able to
(01:15:23):
make a comeback over kirk Cousins and kirk Cousins trailing,
and especially if it's a large deficit doesn't spell well
for the Vikings. No, it doesn't well. Like, Look, this
is a situation where you gotta get sevens. The playoffs
is all about points. It's all about touchdowns. Um, and
when you set up with threes, they end up coming
back to bite you. So we'll see how it goes.
We'll see, uh what this how this turns out for
(01:15:46):
the Vikings. But man, you can't be half. You had
gifted a great opportunity to score um and he didn't
get Yeah, and he missed a throw to Stefon Diggs
near the line. Yeah, So that'll be looked at. That
could be a crucial play up. At least Adam Feland's
foot hasn't ripped open yet, so there's always there's a
he's playing well, he's playing really well. Um. All right,
(01:16:06):
so uh, they are at the half San fran with
a fourteen ten lead over Minnesota. We obviously will be
uh discussing that throughout the remainder of the show. Right
now though it's one of the most talked about segments
here on the show. And if I talked about, I mean,
just with us and amongst us. It's time for this.
Hey got a minute? Heaven? Oh Iowa? Like you give
(01:16:32):
a damn now, presenting the most up to date happenings
from Iowa's four Division one teams, ladies and gentlemen, cousand peaks.
It's the Iowa Minute, Yes, Iowa. Sam, all right, I'm
fed up with everybody here today. I know I could tell.
Like Vince, one of our editors and producers here at
Fox Sports Radio, walked into the studio to talk to Leeds,
(01:16:54):
and Sam told him to get the hell out of
the studio. I just I don't know if you gave
me this ConA hat and I love it, but it's
squeezing my head and it's getting a headache behind my eye.
And I love I love you with royd Rage my
favorite saying tends to make a better show. Guys, Let's
go to Friday Night. Also, I'm just kind of winging this.
Look how thin these notes are. Like there's like five
trust yourself, trust your knowledge, bullet points not script con sence. Yeah, well,
(01:17:16):
we go to Friday Night. Listen number twelve Maryland. There
among the teams at the top of the Big Ten
along with Michigan State and Rutger's gonna believe that Marylyn
waltz into a Carver Hawk Arena in Iowa City Friday night.
There's a bit of an ice storm going on, so
they were thinking there wasn't gonna be much of a
fan show out that night. But the fans did come out.
They did come out for Maryland. Um, and let me
(01:17:38):
they're a little listen, Marylyn was a little icy in
this game. They shot terribly, Hey shot terribly. Let me
tell you they were held to forty nine points. What
do you think the final score was? Jonas between is
it Iowa? Maryland Iowa and Maryland? Iowa? And Maryland? Forty
nine points for Maryland. Because I've been covering Iowa basketball
for a long time. So Maryland scored forty nine, I'm
(01:17:58):
gonna say that Iowa's scored eleven. Not so it was
sixty seven to forty nine. That was the lowest point
total Maryland has been held to in the Big Ten
Conference since joining. Uh, it was just not Maryland's night.
It was all Iowa. They had two guys in double figures, uh,
Joey Scamp and Luca Garza both had both had double
(01:18:19):
doubles against sixties seven to forty nine. Iowa's line up
just so thin, needed this so bad, and they come
in with the come away with the w Here. Listen,
what a difference a week makes. Last week Drake and
Northern Iowa where six and the seventh, respectively in the
Missouri Valley Conference. And what a difference week makes. Currently
(01:18:40):
they are sitting at one and two after a swing
of one game. Uh, Drake is top and you and
I is uh in number two here and these games
are both winding down and I have lost my place?
Where where is my game? You down with m VC?
You know me? You loves Missouri Valley. These are really
coming down to the wire here. Uh, Drake is a
(01:19:00):
point behind Valve Paraso. There's four seconds left. It's sixty
two sixty one, gentleman, looks like Drake is gonna drop.
This might drop in the conference a little bit. By
the way, that score may not be accurate based on
the WiFi we have it then that we're probably we're
probably about ten minutes behind. That was probably played on Wednesday.
Drake probably had like a buzzer beater at the at
the last second but no, it is one with four
(01:19:21):
seconds left in the game. Northern Iowa had no trouble
on the road against Missouri State eighty to fifty seven,
seven over Missouri State. And later today, guys, me, oh my,
Iowa State. They are seven and seven. This is the
school in the entire state that really carries the pride
of the basketball flag right there, seven and seven. Earlier
(01:19:41):
this week they got absolutely hosed at home at Hilton
Colosseum by number three Kansas. That was a three pounding
We don't know what's going on with this Iowa State team.
They are really struggling. They host Oklahoma at seven pm
Central time. They need that win bad Oklahoma again coming
to Hilton. I'll see him. Iowa State trying to get
(01:20:01):
above five. We're just not used to that. And as
you're somewhat abbreviated eye women. You know what, though, Iowa
is on center stage. George Kittle a monster first half
one catch eleven yards for then you know he blocks
well to at least according to people. Others say you
know what, like, look, I'm not I'm not gonna take
(01:20:23):
a shot at Doug Gottlieb, Like you know, Okay, I'm
gonna know what you're talking. People were very critical of
Doug Gottlieb. Al Right. I like Doug Gottlieb, alright, but
you know he's he's got opinions and if you don't
like it, tough balls. That's why he's where he's at,
all right, So Jonas knocks Bucky Brooks. We've gotten more
coming up next here on Fox Sports Radio from the NFL. Well,
Bucky Brooks is making friends everybody. He is making friends
(01:20:46):
with one fan base in the National Football League, and
we will talk about that giant group of friends that
he has made here in just a couple of moments
here on Fox Sports Radio. You can always check out
this show on the I Heart Radio app. You can

Bucky Brooks there at the half in the Bay Area
the Niners have a fourteen ten lead over the Minnesota Vikings.
Jimmy Garoppolo has an interception Kirk Cousins efficient ten of
(01:21:31):
twelve eighty one yards a touchdown, but outside of the
dig's touchdown throw, which is a forty one yard or
the offense has been kind of up and down. They
were fortunate to have good field position converted on a
field goal. But so far, I think San fran has
been the more impressive team. Yes, fan has been the
more impressive team. And I mean, look, they should be
the number one overall. See they should be the best
(01:21:52):
team in the NFC, and they played like it. I
think what you've seen from the San Francisco forty Niners,
the good farces of their team domin run game. You've
seen the defense, loaded with stars step up. They've done
a great job of suffocating the Minnesota Vikings. But you've
also seen why some people have said that Jimmy Garoppolo
potentially could be the weakest link. Great opening drive, but
(01:22:14):
since that opening drive, we've seen some moments where he's
put the ball in harm's way. And the one thing
that could hold the forty Niners back would be the
play of their quarterback in terms of two or three
costly errors that enable a team that has really been
outplayed to stay in this game. Because the Vikers have
been outplayed, but here we are looking at a four
ten team ten game because the quarterbacks turned the ball
(01:22:37):
over Tevin Coleman as a rushing touchdown for the forty Niners.
I still cannot believe that the forty Niners got him
at the contract they got him. Was that two years,
ten million? Look and and and it's one of those
things where the familiarity that cal jann And had with
Tevin Coleman when he saw him and when he had
him with the Atlanta Falcons, he's a perfect fit for
this offense. Dynamic one cut runner, explosive speed and wickness,
(01:23:00):
and he can make plays. We haven't seen one of
those big plays yet, but in terms of being a
great fit in this style offense, he is that he
always any time uh and I'm I'm DeVante Freem was
out with an injury, Tevin Coleman always produced like he
always seemed to play well in Atlanta. The fact that
he was sitting there and they were able to get
him at a bargain like they did, and here he
(01:23:21):
is scoring a touchdown in the playoffs and the forty
Niners are getting the football to start the second half.
The guy who's really made big plays down the field,
Deebo Samuel for the forty Niners. I know from your
South Carolina Gamecox, Uh, Deebo Samuel, Uh, South Carolina? Right?
Are you North Carolina? Was? I wasn't sure. I don't
know what the little cock thing like. North Carolina is
(01:23:44):
the only Carolina. But uh, But Deebo Samuel has had
a good game and he's actually turned into I think,
a much better player than people anticipated he would be.
He was always a playmaker at South Carolina. They would
throw him in all those sorts of scenarios and spots
and a return man and whatnot, and he could always
make plays. But he's really worked out for the forty
Niners thus far. He has absolutely worked out. And the
(01:24:06):
reason he is such a good fit in this offense.
This offense is a catch and run offense, meaning that
the passing games designed for playmakers to get the ball
in their hands quickly and to make things happen yards
after catch with deep Bostamus is a guy that kills
it and that he is bigger than most people think
in terms of his physicality and toughness. He's two five
ten pounds and so he runs through arm tackles, and
(01:24:28):
so when they get him the ball in space, it
is a is a problem. And with his punt return skills,
he is dynamic and open field, terrific in traffic, and
so he shows up when he gets it. So the
forty Niners will start the second half with the football
and pretty good field position at about the thirty six
yard line thirty seven yard line, their own thirty seven
(01:24:49):
yard line, looking to uh to tack onto this fourteen
ten lead here to start the second half. So we
will keep you up to date on that. Now I
mentioned Bucky Brooks is making friends, and listen, why wouldn't uh,
great guy? Uh, you know nobody. I've never met anybody
who's ever said a bad word about him personally or professionally. Well,
listen to look you can you can pick and choose.
(01:25:11):
Life's about the highlight reel nowadays. That's why nobody posts
their ugly pictures. They always post the highlights on Instagram. Like,
So as long as I know the highlights, that's all
I need, And I'll just base my opinion off that.
But that being said, um, your your fan base is
growing a little bit. Yeah, And and not only is
the fan base growing on social media, not only is
the fan base growing on Fox Sports One, on the
(01:25:34):
NFL network, on Fox Sports Radio, but it's also growing
in the Boston area where you you are the version
of Rob Parker because you dared to say that the
Patriots should do what with a certain player on their aster. Oh,
they need to break up with Tom Brady. That's it.
(01:25:54):
They need to break Yeah. I didn't need to break
up with him, like it's over, Like he's been terrific
for long. It's but at some point, like um, there's
an exploration day on every relationship, and I think we've
reached that point. This situation really reminds me of the
l A Lakers and Kobe Bryant. Remember Kobe Bryant at
the end of his career, like a Kobe So great
(01:26:15):
or whatever, But Kobe couldn't play at the very And
I'm not saying Tom Brady can't play, but he's he's declining.
And this year was the worship that we've seen from
Tom Brady in a long time. And the odds are
he's not going to return to being that uh m
VP caliber player. And so with this being the end
of his contract and them having maybe nineteen free agents
and a bunch of those free agents are thirty somethings,
(01:26:37):
it is a perfect time for the New England Pages
to hit the reset button, rebuild the team and continue
to win while rebuilding rebuilding the team. And now you
pointed something out that a lot of people. Now people
will look at just on the surface because they don't
have the football knowledge that you do when and breaking
this stuff down. Everybody has access to the all twenty
two is they just don't know what the hell they're
(01:26:57):
looking at. Um. But you actually identified that this isn't
just a well he doesn't have the weapons around him
as much as it is the ability to throw the
ball in particular wide, which is an important thing for
a quarterback. What did you spot based on just some
of the numbers from the past few years, he's struggling.
He can't push the ball consistently outside the numbers. And
(01:27:19):
if you look at the football field and horizontally um sideline,
the sideline, you want to be able to use all
aspects of the field stretched the defense. So they have
to defend everything well. When you play the Patriots, Tom
Brady wants to typically just throw the ball inside the
numbers in breaking rows things across his face, not only
because he can see it, but because his arm strength
(01:27:39):
is at that point, And then when you think about
not throwing outside but also dealing with the blitz. This year,
under pressure, he only completed thirty seven percent of his
passes Lowis and the league. His passer rating sixty seven
point eight was like the lowest passer rating of all
qualified quarterbacks. And so when when people are talking about
Tom Brady, I understand in the reverence with which you
(01:28:01):
want to do it because he's a six times Super
Bowl champion. But if you're you're looking at him this
year with his eyes and you take the name off
the back of the jersey, uh, there's no way that
you can say that he has played at that kind
of love. Do you think they break up with them?
I think he's coming back. He may come back because
Robert Kraft wants him back. But if he comes back,
I'm gonna say this, Like he comes back, the team
(01:28:23):
doesn't get better because he's bad. Like they can win
because the Patriots aren't going to go out and significantly
upgrade all the weapons on the outside two help him
be the player. Look, they brought Antonio Brown, and they
needed Antonio Brown because they don't have any juice in
the wide receiver corps. And I'm not saying this all
on him. The weapons around him aren't strong, but I
(01:28:44):
mean he can't elevate the squad anymore. And based on
their model, their team building model, they're not going to
go out and get enough dynamic weapons to help him
play at an m v P level. I actually think
they've done more in the past few years against what
they normally do um based on on years. Look, paying
what they paid for Stephon Gilmour. That wasn't a Patriot
(01:29:06):
move like the Patriots, and that would never would never
normally do that, but they did it, and you know,
they got a Super Bowl out of it, and good
for them. They did go out and try and get guys.
They tried to add Antonio Brown, they traded a second
round draft pick for Mohamed Sanu. They tried, it just
didn't work. So if you're Belichick, do you just try again,
(01:29:26):
or maybe do you look big picture and say, Okay,
maybe it's just time that we kind of break this
thing down. I just here, here's here's what I wonder.
Is Belichick going to want to be there for a rebuild? Oh?
I think Belichick is fine. Would a rebuild. I think
Belichick is fine just coaching and doing his deal. I
think he really enjoys the game. He enjoys putting it together.
(01:29:50):
I don't know how Brady feels about that that part
of it, like how he would feel to have to
play with young guys. I think it's just looking at
his body language this year with the young guys that
were on the field, didn't seemingly know how to get
lined up, they didn't know what their rouse were. They
heard him with drop passes. Man, how how long could
Brady endure a young set of wide receivers that are struggling,
(01:30:12):
they can't get open when he feels like the clock
is really ticking on him right now? Um Now, I'll
ask you this because the most recent example of a
great quarterback who broke down and it was obvious was
Peyton Manning. When when Denver won that Super Bowl against
Carolina Super Bowl fifty, it was in spite of Peyton Manning.
He was benched at one point during the season for
(01:30:34):
brock Osweiler, he physically could not make certain throws. I
mean physically he was broken down. There were no options.
I don't think Brady's to that point physically, But how
far off is he from that point skill wise where
Peyton Manning was when he finally called it a career.
But he's not the same like I mean, he's still
a better player than Peyton Manning was at the end
(01:30:55):
of it, but you can see signs of it. It's
beginning to to fall off. The the arm strength, the accuracy. Uh,
it wasn't what has always been and so um A
lot of times in personnel, what you want to do
is you want to uh break up with him a
year too early rather than a year too late. So
even if he goes and he turns back up in
(01:31:16):
l A and maybe he has a magical season, to
odds of Tom Brady having that magical season on multiple
years not likely. It's three not likely that he at
forty five he's all of a sudden going to turn
back the clock and be vintage Brady. So if you're
the Patriots, you're trying to play the guessing, Hey, is
this a natural breaking point? Hey? Let's break up with
(01:31:36):
him right now, before it goes the other way and
before we're stuck with an older quarterback that can't play,
but we're paying him a significant amount of money. Bucky
Brooks Jonas knocks here on Fox Sports Radio from the
Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios. Update on the playoff game
from the Bay Area. A thirty five yard field goal
by Robbie gold and the forty Niners extend their lead
to seventeen to ten. But they were driving an opportunit
(01:32:00):
unity to to put to get a touchdown on the board.
So a good stop by Minnesota, who will get the
ball back their first possession of the second half. So
we will keep you up to date on all that.
All right, from the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios. Coming
up next, we're going to talk to a former NFL
quarterback about which matchup favors a road team this weekend
(01:32:23):
in the NFL playoffs, and the answer might surprise you.
That's next year on FSR. Third Doubt and that here
comes the gold Rush. Cousins back throws off right intercepted
by Richard Sherman that Sherman will take it back inside
the thirty yard line drop down in Minnesota eight yard line.
Your best players are playing their fast right now. Forty
(01:32:47):
Niners Radio Network on the call. An interception from Kirk
Cousins and the San Francisco forty Niners have the football
and a first intent from the Minnesota thirty five have
and a big pick up there on first down by
Tevin Coleman and the forty Niners with an opportunity to
really take a lot of the life out of the
(01:33:08):
Minnesota Vikings here. So Richard Sherman with that interception and
on the play there was a crackback from Nick Bosa
on Alignman for the Minnesota Vikings, and Bosa if that
was college football, I think not only would he be ejected,
he might get six months in prison. It would look
(01:33:30):
good play. It's just fun to exaggerate on radio, you know.
But it was a big crackback block. There was a
penalty and other forty Niners and that rushing attack body
blows man. You're starting to see the two headed monster,
the three headed monster for the forty Niners and they
are attacking the body of Minnesota and Minnesota and that
defense is background on the field. This looks like it
(01:33:51):
could be getting ugly here. For the Vikings. Yeah, look
this is tough. Eleven rushing yards for the San Francisco
Ford now is only fifteen for the Minnesota Vikings. Uh.
This has been how the San Francisco forty niners have
dominated everybody. They've dominated because the running game can control
it and do it. You look at time of possession.
You talk about two to one, uh twenty four Medicine
County that they've possessed the football. And look, there's nothing
(01:34:15):
complex to what the forty nine is due. They just
line up and inside and outside zone. Uh, they get
on the tracks and then they have the runners hit.
And right now they're creating movement at the point of attack,
and the running backs are just finding little creases. And
as you watch this game play out, and you just wonder.
You know, as we pointed out earlier, the quarterback who
would have the most difficult time as far as trying
(01:34:36):
to get back in the game if they were trailing,
and that quarterback would be Kirk Cousins. And so here
we are, Uh, Dalvin Cook. Uh, he will as this
if this lead expands, Uh, you'll probably see less of
Dalvin Cook from a running standpoint. So Kirk Cousins just
gonna have to throw the football. He's already thrown the
one interception. I'm seeing on social media that Richard Sherman
(01:34:57):
made it a point to say I like that when
he intercepted Kirk Cousins. So good to see Richard Sherman
take a look. Richard Sherman taking him at somebody other
than Mike Florio. It's nice to see over the past
couple of weeks. And so so here we are and
the the San Francisco forty Niners are driving a third
(01:35:19):
and two, six minutes and counting in the third quarter
in San fran with a seventeen to ten lead over
the Minnesota Vikings. Right now, joining us here on Fox
Sports Radio, it is Bruce Gradkowski, former NFL quarterback now
and analysts for Pro Football Focus, and he's always kind
enough to spend a few minutes with us here every
Saturday on Fox Sports Radio. Bruce, Jonas and Bucky. What's happening, guys,
(01:35:43):
Thanks for having me. How you guys doing good. We're
just watching this forty Niner rushing attack. It looks like
body blows and they're starting to pay off as they're
starting to find bigger and bigger holes. In this Vikings defense,
and now I've set up a first and goal with
an opportunity to add to this seven point lead. Yeah,
I know that that's an issue. What I thought too
when I saw Kirk Cousins interception, it's like mad, you know,
(01:36:06):
it's an unfortunate break. You know. I'm not sure if
Feeling should have maybe came in on the route, but
I think Kirk missed him a little inside. But anytime
you turn the ball over and get it, give him
good fuel possession position. Um, you know, the Niners are
going to take advantage of it, especially being up seventeen
tenant about to go in. Um, you know, and Jimmy
g gave them one. You know. It's like the second quarter,
(01:36:29):
so it kind of even it up, but you're right,
it's body blows and then man, the Niners just walk
in first score just now. Yeah, and now it's San
Fran with the lead four fifty to go on the
third quarter, so you know, And it's tough too because
I was thinking before the game and I'm like, if
you're Robert Slid, defensive coordinator for the Niners, and you're
(01:36:50):
Kevin Stefanski, uh, you know, offensive coordinator for the Vikings.
It's almost like, whoever loses this game gets the head
coaching gig from the Browns. I just had that feeling.
I have no insight, but you know, i'm you know,
if you've let Josh McDaniels walk out of your building,
I just think it's one of these two guys. And
it's like, as a coach going to this game, of course,
(01:37:13):
you know you're trying to win the super Bowl, but
you're also you're trying to strive, you know, your personal
goals to to to be a head coach someday. Um.
So it's a tough position to be in, and I
hate when coaches are put in this position. But of course,
you know, when you're in the moment, all you wanna
do is win. But I have a feeling for some reason,
if the Vikings go down, I think Stefanski is gonna
(01:37:34):
be the Brown's head coach. Yeah, you know, it's interesting
how how that could play out with Stefanski. You have
an opportunity to be the head coach potentially in Cleveland, um,
you know, and and thinking about that Brown's Bruce, like,
how good of a job is that? Really? Right? I mean,
from the past, it doesn't look good, right. I mean
(01:37:55):
you could look at it two ways. Right. You could
look at it like, hey, I could go there, sign
the five year contract contract and only worked two years
and I'll get paid for the rest of it, um,
if you want to look at that way. Hey, But
I think it's the the you know, if of the
instability that the Browns have had over the last so
(01:38:16):
many years. It's tough. But I think right now, I
really do think the Browns want to get it right.
It was just very unfortunate. Last year. They had some momentum,
you know, John Dorsey made some good moves. You know,
I thought drafting Baker Mayfield was good. They had some success,
and then it came down to hire that next head coach,
(01:38:36):
and look, Freddie Kitchens. That's a tough job as a
head coach. And Freddie Kitches took over his offensive coordinator,
you know, during the year, so to think that's the
first time him being an offensive coordinator. So now you're
going into the season as the first time head coach,
first time offensive coordinator, so there's a lot on your plate.
And I just felt like last year was the time
(01:38:58):
they really could have got it right. So I think now,
especially you know, as the Browns and have them watched
the rest of the NFL. I think they want some stability,
and I think it's important for them to also have
a GM and coach and not maybe run it as
if it was the New England Patriots way, where you
(01:39:19):
know Belichick has full control. Um. So that's kind of
what leads me against McDaniels going there. But man, I
just think, you know, if you're a head coach and
you're in this game, you always want the opportunity to,
you know, turn a program around, turn a team around,
win a championship. And when I look at the Browns,
I see that they're not far away. I think they
(01:39:41):
have the talent, so a good coach can really help
them maybe take the next step. Bruce Grandkowski, former NFL
quarterback and analysts for Pro Football Focus, joining us here
on Fox Sports Radio. Jonas knocks Bucky Brooks here on
f s R. SO, Bruce, looking at these games, obviously
Kirk Cousins is trailing in this game. But if we
go Titans, Ravens, Texans, Chiefs, and Seahawks Packers, which road
(01:40:07):
quarterback do you give the best opportunity to pull off
an upset this weekend. I'm going with Russell Wilson. I mean,
I think, you know, I think Mahomes. I look at
that game with the Texans, you know, the first time
they played, Mahomes had his first interception of the year.
He had a fumble backed up with twenty three seconds
left in the first half that gave the Texans a touchdown. Eventually, UM,
(01:40:31):
I don't see Mahomes doing those kind of things. So
even though Watson I love him, and I think he
had that you know, willpower that really just wills his
team to victory. Sometimes when we saw last week, I'm
taking my homes And then you know, when you look
at the Titans Ravens, it's the same thing with will power.
You know. I talk about Lamar Jackson all the time
(01:40:52):
and the confidence he brings to that football team in
the locker room. So I can't go against Lamar Jackson.
But then when I look at Seattle on Green Bay,
now I'm looking at the quarterback in Russell Wilson that
it doesn't always look pretty the first three quarters of
the game, and you're wondering how they're gonna pull it out,
and then this guy does it time and time again,
and um so he's the guy look at right now
(01:41:14):
going on the road that uh could give the road
team the best possibility to win. You know, Bruce, you
mentioned Lamar Jackson. I kind of want to pick your brain.
As a former quarterback, you, Lamar Jackson, You've gone through
the regular season, you played at the m v P level,
You've gotten to that point. But the elephant in the
room is how are you going to perform in the playoffs.
(01:41:35):
How does he settle in and not try to prove
to his critics that he's a different player than he
was last time we saw him in the postseason? Yeah, Bucky,
And and that's that's tough man, because look, I mean
the year he had was just unbelievable to watch, and
I think the coaching staff did a great job around him.
But as a competitor, you're right, I mean, you know,
(01:41:57):
you feel like you have to prove something weekend, and
he got, especially these top tier guys, I was never there, right,
I mean I was never at the point Lamar Jackson
as a Tom Brady, you know, watching these guys win
and win MVP and Super Bowls. Uh So it's next
level type stuff. So Lamar Jackson doesn't get you know,
satisfied or complacent being the NFL m v P or
(01:42:19):
possibly so. I think to him, it's not winning a
super Bowl. And the thing I loved about him all
season was it doesn't always look pretty, but he finds
a way. And I think what he brings to that
locker room is a humbleness, a competitiveness that his teammates
want to play with him and for him, and it's
just a really close knit group that jeel together. And
(01:42:40):
that's why I'm coming in this Ravens team. Not maybe
all the ability, even though he has it all and
he has that one percent ability that you you can't coach,
but it's just the Joe that he brings that locker
room and brings those guys together. Bruce, last one for
me before we let you go. Uh, Bucky is making
friends in New England area and he says the Patriots
(01:43:02):
should break up with Tom Brady based on what he's
seen from him as a quarterback. So so they love
him in Boston right now. But for you, somebody who
studied all these quarterbacks throughout the course of the year, um,
what concerns you about Tom Brady and his future? In
the NFL. What what is the tape showing you? Well,
you know, I mean I love Tom Brady and what
(01:43:22):
he's brought. I mean, he's a guy that talked about
the competitiveness and just man, you know, I can't lie
if I want as many Super Bowls as he did,
if I made that much money, I'd be sitting on
a beach somewhere with my feet up, drinking drinking margarite
to enjoying it and looking at my rings. And the
(01:43:43):
guy keeps getting after And that's what I love about him.
And but I do think, you know, watching them from
this year, Yes he didn't have as many weapons, and
but he just looks more tentative in the pocket, you know,
when you get up in age. You know, kind of
happened to me later on in my career. Towards the end,
my shoulder was healthy and I couldn't make the throws
that I was used to, So now you kind of
(01:44:04):
have to try to get the ball out Earlier, you're
unsure if you can make certain plays, and then you
don't want to take an unnecessary hit in the pocket
because you're afraid you're gonna hurt it worse or hurt
something else, and and I see that from Brady at
times is not one to take sacks and not even
wanting to get hit. So he's really letting the pressure
get to him. And that's what I've seen. And now
(01:44:25):
I would love more than anything. I was thinking about
this the other day for Josh McDaniels to take the
Brown's job, bring Tom Brady with him, letting Mayfield learned
from Brady for a few years, maybe two years. Get
Brady a two year deal, and it would be the
greatest competition to watch Bill Belichick in New England say,
you know, want to prove I can win without Brady,
(01:44:47):
and then you're gonna have Josh McDaniels and Tom Brady
saying I can win, we can win without Bill Belichick.
So that would be like the ultimate, you know, ending
to this unbelievable dynasty to New England and Tom Brady.
Let check McDaniels to see that happen. I mean, look
at you guys trying to cause problems. I mean, you know,
it's just it's just a nice little dynasty that's last
(01:45:07):
a couple of decades. And the construction team of Bucky
Brooks and Bruce Kradkowsk here trying to tear it down
the building. I mean, unbelievable. We just we just were
tv V. I mean, I know we try and take
the emotion out of it and look at it with
our heads and not our hearts. So I wonder, but hey,
Bruce and and thinking about that Cleveland job and Baker Mayfield,
(01:45:30):
if you had an opportunity to pull Baker Mayfield to
the side and you can talk to him going into
his third year, what kind of advice would you give him? Well,
I just think he brings some stuff to the game
that you can't coach. That you have to love. The
competitive drive, the willingness to want to be in the
locker room and change the organization. He really does. He
loves it. But it's sometimes too It's like, hey, look,
(01:45:52):
let's let's talk and let's just do it on the field.
Let's prove it on the field. Because I think there's
a few things that went unnoticed this year or as
I graded some games, some of his interceptions weren't his fault,
and it was either O. B. J putting a little
too much, you know, a flavor on the route or
another receiver not crossing face on a post, but he
never saw Baker Mayfield calling those guys out in the
(01:46:15):
press or after games or in the media. So Baker
is a guy that that took it upon himself, and
you know when fans might not really know what's going
on and stuff. So so I give him a lot
of credit in that sense. And yes, the training room
incident of calling out Mayfield's or oh b J's injury,
you know, and and and the training set not handling
it properly. Look, he's just trying to have his teammates
(01:46:37):
back because he understands being on the field and competing
with these guys, he wants to show he has his
teammates back. And I think that's why he said it,
not necessarily to bash the training room, but to kind
of have his teammates back. So I think he has
the tools to get it done to be successful. And
now it's just really focusing in. And I honestly think
(01:46:58):
this op season is going to be a big one.
Form It's going to help him focus back in and
really know that the NFL can humble you. But I
think Mayfield has the tools to get it done. Um
and hopefully they hire the right coach that can help
him on on the on the process. He is Bruce Gradkowski,
former NFL quarterback analyst for Pro Football Focus. Always kind
(01:47:19):
of up to spend a few minutes with us here
every Saturday on Fox Sports Radio. You can get him
on Twitter at b Gradkowski five. Bruce, always appreciate it.
We'll talk next week as we preview the a f
C and NFC Championship. Awesome, guys, have a good weekend,
enjoy these games. There. He is Bruce Gradkowski here on
Fox Sports Radio from the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios.
(01:47:40):
All right, coming up next. It's been called the weirdest
segment in all of sports talk radio. Find out what
it is here on fs are for all the latest
tho from around the world of sports. A ladies and gentlemen,
Ralph effing Irvin, Well, thank you very much, Jonas. And
you know what's not weird? Seven straight forty Niner runs.
I gotta get a call. I'm on the shot, got
(01:48:00):
red for days, got second it red to go? Canbr
forty Niners Radio Network with the call as San Francisco
lead over Minnesota to play in the third quarter. So
far in this game, the Niners have out gained the
(01:48:21):
Vikings two d and fifty eight yards to just ninety,
although Minnesota will get the ball back about one fifteen
to play in the third quarter of this game again
San Francisco with a twenty four to ten lead, and well, okay,
maybe Minnesota won't get the ball back because they just
muffed a punt for the second time in this game,
this time recovered by the forty. Niners will have it
(01:48:43):
inside the Vikings ten yard line. E uh Houston at
lead over Minnesota right now, the only game going on
in in the NBA thirteen to play in the third
quarter of that matchup, James Harden twenty three points and
eleven rebounds. Already in this game, Russell Westbrook has fourteen points.
(01:49:04):
A couple of finals in from college basketball number one
gonzag over l m U, while Syracuse upsets number eighteen
Virginia five. So we send it back to Jonah Knocks
and Buckey Brooks. Thanks Ralph comany you live here from
the Geico Fox Sports radio studios, where it's easy to
say more on car insurance with Geico, go to Geico
(01:49:25):
dot com or call eight nine for seven Auto. The
only hard part figuring out which way is easier. Uh,
they say, um, in the NFL, and I think this
bleeds over to college football, but for sure in the
NFL that if you win the turnover battle, if you
just win the turnover battle, you will win close to
sevent of your games. Just right off the bat if
(01:49:48):
all you needed to know was the information going in
that one team was going to win the turnover battles
seven out of ten times that team wins based on
the numbers in in NFL history. And so here we are,
forty Niners are winning the turnover a muff pump by
Minnesota after a great stop by that defense on a
third and short to force the punt. In San fran
(01:50:09):
has the football with an opportunity to really put the
nail in the coffin in this game at this point. Yeah,
that's a tough one, man. They work hard to get
a stop on fourth down. They're down to touchdowns. They
had an opportunity to get the ball back. You thought
they would get a chance with decent field position, and unfortunately,
like the part returner, muffed it. Uh. The challenge when
you're a part returner, Um, it is very similar to
(01:50:31):
playing in the outfield when you judge in the ball.
Ideally you like to run and settle up under the
ball under control. When you're drifting or moving or running
too fast, it is really really hard to kind of
concentrate and look it in And look, Marcus, she was
just just lost the ball and it could be costly.
And like, this is a situation where with the forty
(01:50:51):
Niners having the football and the third quarter winding down,
not only is you know, the score going to become
an issue now you gotta worry about time could be
an issue here for the Minnesota Vikings. Uh, Mike Zimmer
looks like he's about ready to strangle somebody. Kirk Cousins
looks like, uh, the reality is starting to set in.
So just a bad situation there. Uh So for Viking
(01:51:14):
fans who travel to the Bay Area for this game,
it is not looking good. Uh. And and look, they
had an opportunity. You just gotta wonder at the end
of that first half that they had gotten a touchdown
and not the field goal, how much different would this
game be right now? And ye, blown opportunity. So they
haven't played their best game. They haven't been able to
generate any offense. Uh, Kirk Cousins hasn't been limited, but
(01:51:34):
they haven't been able to to run the ball effect ly. Um,
they've missed some throws and then to turnover something you
just can't have turnovers. And then in this game in
the playoffs, everything is magnified turnovers, field opportunities in the
red zone, and the Minnesota Vikings haven't done enough to
really challenge the San Francisco For you now, Bucky Brooks
Jonas Knocks here on Fox Sports Radio from the Geico
(01:51:55):
Fox Sports Radio Studios. All right, coming up next, it's
the weirdest segment in all of sports talk radio. But
it's going to feature a scam, a full blown scam
involving the NFL media. Find out what it is here
on FSR. Do you careful? Jonas Knox, Bucky Brooks here
on Fox Sports Radio from the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios.
(01:52:21):
So an update on before we get to the weird
world of Ralph here on fs ARE and update on
the game in the Bay Area where the Niners have
a twenty seven to ten lead over the Minnesota Vikings
start of the fourth quarter. There, Uh, this game has
gotten out of hand in a hurry. Turnovers an issue,
and the the Minnesota Vikings find themselves in a big
(01:52:42):
deficit here on the road. Uh Now, if you're a
Viking fan, you're probably upset, maybe a little bit angry. Um,
you're probably though not as angry as Iowa Sam are
technical producer who has just been a giant pain in
the ass the entire What is your issue? Man? I
wear this code a hat to make you happy, Jonas.
(01:53:02):
It was a gift from you a few years ago. Yeah,
and it's a little too tight. It's kind of squeezing
my head. And get a haircut. I did get a
haircut not that long ago. My hair short from my
from my standards, and it's giving me a little headache
behind my eye, so I stretch it out. You got
a big head, by the way, you wear a size
eight hat? Hat? Do you wear, Bucky? I wear a
seven and one eighth? See you wear an eight, perhaps
(01:53:24):
either seven and seven eighths or an eighth, depending on
these This is a pretty flexi fit days. They got
to Yeah, you gotta go to lids or hat world
and look all the way in the back, all the
way in the back of all the hat. That's like
like like a garbage can. That's like a bowling ball
fitting into a hat. Yeah, that's uh Joey bos Nick
(01:53:45):
Bosa down on the turf, UM after a sack of
Kirk Cousin. So you wonder what the situation is there
Nick Bosa, guy who's dealt with some injuries in his career. Um,
played it safe coming out of college, but has been
a factor in this game. Um. So we will keep
you posted on as to what is the status of
(01:54:06):
Nick Bosa, who was in on the sack of Kirk
Cousins on a third down, UM and Nick Bosa who
looks like somebody may have landed on him. UM, yeah,
I just wonder, UM, tough despective. He's still down on
the field, So alright, so a fourth down there. We
(01:54:28):
will keep you up to date on the status of
Nick Bosa, who's being helped to the sideline. Now. He's
kind of getting the crowd going a little bit, uh,
him and George Kittle pro wrestlers trapped in a forty
niners locker room is what I believe. Now he's jumping
up and down and and the whole crowd is getting
worked up there in San France. All right, right now,
without further ado, it's time for the weirdest segment on
(01:54:50):
Sports Stock Radio. It's called this taking the My Ass
and now the weird World of Ralph because we do
all right, Ralph Urban National Update anchor, what the hell
(01:55:11):
is going on? Well, you know, earlier this week, Larry
David was on the YES Network and he was talking
about his beloved New York Jets, and he shared this tidbit.
I did call Mike mcagnen before the two thousand and
eighteen draft and I recommended that he drafted mar Jackson.
I have a witness. Really, yes, I have a witness.
And what did he say to you when you said that?
(01:55:31):
He kind of gave me the most condescend so you
have to Yeah, I told him that he kind of
like he laughed at me, but who can blame him?
But then he was asked about Jets head coach Adam gives,
I can't take the hat he's I can't take a
coach wearing a hat constantly tells me that there's something
about him. He's not comfortable with himself. Because I I
(01:55:54):
when I started doing stand up, I wasn't comfortable and
I started putting a hat on because I was hiding.
That's what he's doing. He's hiding either he's hiding baldness
or there's something about his personality it's uncomfortable with. But
you can't trust a man who wears the hat. He's
got to take the hat off. He's got to face
the public. He's gotta be out there, get rid of
the hat. So Bucky, I trust you. Jonas. Let me
(01:56:17):
tell you something. The time, I love Adam Gaze. You
don't know why he's Jay Cutler. It's why him and
Cutler got along so well, they're the same guy. They
don't want to do any of the interviews. They don't
want to deal with the media. Crap. Yeah, they just
they want to do their thing. And and so because
(01:56:37):
he's in New York, it's a bad fit. But all this,
like these conversations about Adam Gaze saying I'm riches f
and these reports that have come out, I think it's crap.
I think it's because he doesn't play the game with
the media New York. So now people are out to
get him there in that media marketing. So not because
they're opening press conference, he had the weird eyes looking
(01:56:59):
right like Larry Davis. City's uncomfortable. Some people are socially awkward.
He's you know, he's he's one of those guys. It's
just not his thing. He's a football guy. I wish,
I wish that I could do the show with you
doing Adam gaze the entire time where you're talking. I wonder,
I wonder how comfortable you would be? Give me christ
eyes just darted all around the room. Why are you
(01:57:21):
talking to me? And I'm supposed to look at you here?
Can you do this? Can you? Bucky Brooks? Next time
you're on speak for yourself on Fox Sports one, or
if you're on with Colin Coward, can you please do
the Adam games? And I want to responsible. I want
to see how long until Jason Whitlock notices? Fuck? What
(01:57:42):
the hell are you doing over there? I'm just looking
at flies. I'm just watching flies? Oh man? Yeah? What else? Well?
And he by users sold a pair of Kyle Rudolph's
game used gloves from the Saints playoff game last weekend.
The Vikings tight end says he was approached by a
court entiled media member and asked to give his game
gloves to raise money for charity. Well, a little sleuthing
(01:58:05):
found that this guy has been selling other game used
equipment over the last few months, including Super Bowl confetti,
ten Pro Bowl programs, a pair of autograph se Kwon
Barkley Pro Bowl gloves, Kareem Hunt Pro Bowl gloves, Bradley
Chubb gloves, and multiple items from the twenty nineteen Super Bowl. Unbelievable.
I mean, who knew that Eli Manning was a member
of the media already? I mean selling that merchandise? Oh sorry,
(01:58:29):
I thought his brother is Yeah, sorry about that. I
thought my micros off. It's funny. Yeah, that story disappeared.
That where Tom Brady and that story something tells we
wouldn't have disappeared. Umatist. So far Rudolph is not outing
the media member. Who has to be a national right
you know, national media guy. Who do you think it is? Ralph?
Do you want to start a name of names? Who
do you think? Who do you got? I just you know,
(01:58:51):
don't look to your right. Wow, alright, so Bucky fests up?
Why did you do it? Man? Why did you need
Kyle Rudolph's gloves? And a little a little extra cash
is always helpful. I mean, yeah, so you already sold
the Newman gloves I got you for Christmas and now
you see that kind of started. That started, that started
the process. Because I had so many success with the Newmans.
(01:59:12):
I was like, hey, Rudolphs, you are such a glove slot.
I mean, like like the Newman's aren't enough. You gotta
have Kyle Rudolphs as well too. I mean, I mean
like like we're starting a little business. I mean just
flipping gloves. This is unbelight worn. That's uh gosh, unbelievable.
I mean those gloves were used to push off, you know,
(01:59:33):
in in in a playoff game, and you had to
sell them. How dare you kind of bed um? All right? Ralph?
What else we got? Early Thursday morning, many drivers in
Pine Not, Kentucky saw a curious roadside construction sign. It
said send nudes. Here's one witness, Tevin Stevens. He's thinking
this can't be real, right, no way, So we kind
(01:59:55):
of pulled over in shock and we had to take
our pictures instead of just for last Apparently someone hacked
into the signs password protective interface change the message overnight.
The sign is not operated by the state but a
contractor doing roadwork for the Kentucky Transportation What happened to
the good old days, would you like, knew the code
to get on the inter common a supermarket or a
(02:00:15):
Toys r Us and you would go, what would Mike
Roch please come to the front desk. Mike Roch, please
come to the front desk. I mean, now you're like
doctoring road signs. I don't know. I like the I
like the good old days. You get on the loudspeaker.
I've never I've never done that. You never did that before? No,
I didn't even know you can access it. Yeah, listen,
I'm not saying I like, I'm not saying I ever
(02:00:39):
did that at a Toys r US that I used
to work at or anything like that. I'm not saying
that I knew the code to get in seventeen pound
to get on the loudspeaker. But I'm just saying that
some people were you know, that was part of the Ralph.
Did you ever do that? What was your favorite name
to give out? Um, I'll go with the Spanish version
of Miguel Hunt. I didn't do anything I was expecting
(02:01:05):
off speed. Ralph just went straight gas, uh, straight straight.
I don't have much of your creative personality, that is, uh,
you know, there's only one thing to say after Ralph
dropped that, and it's a C signor and dis b
o our four or quatro if you will next. It's
(02:01:29):
getting ugly. It is getting ugly. This is what we
were fearing for one team in the NFL. And we'll
get to that here coming up in just a couple
of moments. Bucky Brooks, Jonas Knox Fox Sports Radio. You
can listen to the show on the I Heart Radio
app on every single one of our Fox Sports Radio affiliates.
Wherever you are taking part in this program, we always
(02:01:51):
appreciate a few minutes your time as we come to

The San Francisco forty Niners have a twenty seven ten
lead over the Minnesota Vikings eight minutes and change left
(02:02:12):
to go in the game, and San fran is dominating
right now at the line of scrimmage, they're just running
the ball down their throat. Tevin Coleman with another gaping
hole there on the right side, and this is just
body blow, body blow, And they say if you go
to the body enough, sooner or later the head will fall.
And it looks like the Vikings head is about to fall. Yeah,
they look they We talked about it early in the
(02:02:35):
first half when they got the turnover. It was very
important for them to go in fourteen fourteen when they
let the forty Niners off to hope. They went in
fourteen ten and the Niners got it scored right away.
It created the kind of separation that they wanted seventeen
ten and they got to turn over um and that's
really been a difference. But really, when you look at
this game, the Niners have dominated. They've dominated in every
single way, like the way they bottled up the Vikings
(02:02:56):
offense and then being able to control a lot of
scrimmage and grinded out. Jimmy Garopolo only has a hundred
and thirty one yards passing, but he got off to
a fast start and that was just enough to loosen
them up so they could run the ball all the
way they wanted to um. And look, it feels like
this game is all but done. I mean, you want
to know how you know that this game is all
but done. Our executive producer lead A lap I mean,
(02:03:19):
he's just cruising around, like are you drinking? Is that
alcohol you're drinkingly? I saw you cruise in the hallways
like we were coming back from break. I'm hustling, Bucky
is focused on the next hour here at Fox Sports Radio,
and Lee's just kind of mosing around like the dude
off big Lebowski. That was that about a little hot toddy? Man?
No problem? There's all right, whatever, what does a hot toddy?
What does that mean? What is a hot Toddy's? I
(02:03:41):
always say, you know what hot toddy is bourbon and
warm water? Okay, so all right, that's good combined bourbon
and warm water. Like I just don't understand, like what
what is that doing for me? It's like a peanut
It's like peanut butter and formalde hyde, Like who one that?
Like what? Like what is this? Is? This is not
(02:04:02):
a sweet drink? Like like what is can I get?
Like I thought we've mixed it so I can I
can have something to take the edge off, like hold
water you've had like maybe you know, you had like
a whiskey with some ice cubes in it, or maybe
you add a little water to it, but it's it's
hot water instead of cold water ice. It's kind of water.
What does what does the water do to the whiskey?
It does take the edge of it, interlues it a
little little bit, Yeah, a little bit, A little bit.
(02:04:23):
I mean, I guess if you need to take the
edge off for some of you out there, I mean
some people want that straight gas enough, slip me a
bottle of absolutely hotti crotch or whatever they call it.
And it looks like we have a near another near
(02:04:43):
first down for the forty niners. So this is if
you're an offensive lineman, you love this time of game, right,
I mean, down down the throat of this defense. I mean,
this is this is the way that you want to
play the game. Um. They throw early, run late, and
that's what they've been able to and it's worked for them.
I don't know why they would go for it on
(02:05:03):
fourth down right here, just messing around Kyle Shannon, you know,
just screwing around Kyle Shannon, and you know, let letting
Mike Zimmer know who's boss. There's no way didn't haven't
in the game. Why even playing around with this Jimmy
Garoppolo threatening here on a fourth and one. Um, So
it looks like, at least Minnesota will get the ball back.
(02:05:24):
And for those of you out there who had the
Vikings plus eight, um, you know, for those of you
who might you know host weekend overnight here at Fox
Sports Trading and had the Vikings plus eight thoughts and prayers,
is it does not look good for you. With five
minutes left to go. You can I point something out though,
why I quietly am rooting for the forty Niners and
(02:05:48):
the Ravens and the Super Bowl in a rematch of
the game that went dark for a little while at
the Superdome years ago. The top two For all this
conversation about how it's a different NFL and the running
back is devalued and it's all about passing and it's
all about offense and up and down the field and
(02:06:08):
all that stuff that we kept hearing about, two things
stand the test of time in the NFL. If you
can play defense and you can rush the run the football,
you're gonna be able to advance in the postseason. The Ravens,
the forty Niners, the Titans, the Seahawks, the Cowboys, the Vikings,
(02:06:29):
the Texans, the Bills, all amongst the top rushing offenses
in the NFL with Baltimore and San Francisco at the top.
I would love it if, after hearing for years the
past couple of years about how it's all about the
passing game and it's all about the quarterback and the offense,
if we ended up with the two best rushing attacks
in the NFL in the Super Bowl, I'd be okay
(02:06:52):
with it. Look, I would be okay with it. And
I think what they do what a lot of teams do,
like they tease you and threaten you with the running
game with the passing game early to only bludding you
with the running game late. And that's what they did.
If you go and you look and think about the
fact that Jimmy Garoppolo only has a hundred and thirty
one passing yards, but that first drive it looked like
Jimmy Garoppolo was slicing the Minnesota Vikings up and so
(02:07:16):
it's I mean, it's almost a deceptive tactic the way
that they came out, because they kind of lull you
into thinking that they're a passing team, but at forty
nine is our running team and they hit you in
them out. In baseball, certain teams, you know, if you
can just get us to the sixth inning, our bullpenal takeover.
So if you have a lead going into the six
certain teams you're screwed. That that's how the Royals won
a World Series. That's how you know the the Astros
(02:07:39):
back in the day when they weren't cheating. Uh sorry
did I say that on the air? Sorry, Mike, I
thought my micros off. Um. They the idea was get
to the bullpen and then they'll shut it down from there.
And it's almost like the forty niners, to your point,
get you a lead, and their bullpen is their rushing attack,
and once they have the lead, they eat up. I mean, look,
(02:08:01):
this game started at one thirty five local time. It's
just a little bit after four, and we're like approaching
three minutes and change left in the game, like they've
just knifing this defense and milking the clock. It oh
boy drops the past. But yeah, it's it's it's it's clever,
it's deceptive. I mean, it's it's really it's really funny
(02:08:25):
because I mean you're sitting here and literally the way
that we sat and watched the first thirty minutes of
this game, we're like, man, Jimmy Garoppolois to win the
ball all over the yard. They cut him apart and
then they're just slicing and dicing you with the running games. Unbelievable. Yea.
And it's just it's it's not exactly as it seems. Now,
I'll say this, So the forty Niners are going to
win this game. They're gonna get either Seattle or green Bay.
(02:08:48):
Who do you give a better chance at beating the
forty Niners on the road, Seattle or green Bay? Because
they familiarity? Yeah, they played him tough. I mean, shoot,
they were entry away from knocking him off pre easily.
They beat them before in San Francisco. If they played
a green Bay Packers, I think they can run the
green Bay Packers out the build. I do too. And
before Yeah, the first time against green Bay that was ugly. Um.
(02:09:11):
Aaron Rodgers has a history of of having issues with
the forty Niners in the postseason. Colin Kaepernick put up
put a number on on Green Bay in the postseason
years ago. I just, yeah, I think Seattle could give
them issues. Um, but I don't think green Bay can
give them the same problems. And it's have you played
(02:09:32):
have you? Have you played against teams three times in
a season to where you played them twice in the
regular season. We did that in Kansas City when we
lost that time, Well what's okay? So what's that? Like?
What was the regular season? Like? I mean, you know,
you know what they do, you know what their players are. Like,
I mean, if you wrinkles that everyone adds in. But
you know exactly what you're about to face. And it
is one of those things where if you've beating the
(02:09:52):
team tice or if you lost to them, like, it
can go either way, but the familiarity makes it easy
from a preparation standpoint. But still it's all about the
game bay execution. Yeah, so it'll be curious to see
because those those games were really really good. Um, you
know Week seventeen obviously we saw that if you know,
we're talking what a half yard away from Seattle getting
(02:10:14):
a first round by in in in the playoffs at
home against San Francisco. Uh. You also saw the Monday
Night game, which was a classic in which the forty
Niners had injuries. George Kittle was not available. Also, Robbie
Gold was not available. There was a miss kick and
it was Seattle who won at San Francisco on a
(02:10:34):
Monday night, which was a great game. So those two
teams idea. I would like to see Seattle in San
Francisco for a third time. They're two of the best
games all season long. I think it would be awesome.
So I think it would be absolutely you know, you
know how they would play out like the run up
to the thing. How many times we see that played
it into just so we could be reminded of the
(02:10:56):
helmet to helmet that wasn't called in that spot. I mean,
there was that guy got cracked. Was it Hollister? Who
was the tight end? You like those guys? They were
calling for the penalty clowney when he hit Carson went
in the back, Like I'm not only should they have
called a penalty on that defender for San Francisco that hit.
I believe it was Hollister at the goal line in
(02:11:16):
Week seventeen, but I think I think they should have
kicked him out of the league. Was at gonna keep
you away from Parker? Come on, Bucky, It's what I've
been saying. Kirk Cousins is the will hate the worst
of all time. And uh Stefon Diggs on a fourth
(02:11:38):
and one had the ball and it just got broken up.
So here we go. I mean, yeah, it was a
great play, but twenty seven to tend the forty niners
with a lead um and they will take the ball
over and that will pretty much put a rap on
this game. Uh, and it's it's too bad, by the way,
because we were giving such great games a week ago,
(02:11:59):
you knew were due for a stinker or blowout at
least interesting game. But this is going to turn out
to be a blowout. Yeah, it's gonna turn out. It's
gonna turn out to be exactly what has been. It's
completely dominated when you play the one versus the six.
This is how it should be. There's a number one team.
But look, I thought it's gonna be closer. I thought
Minnesota would play better offensively. They just didn't have a
(02:12:19):
thing to one thing that I think they would ask
themselves why didn't they run the ball more or better?
Why couldn't they run the ball better? All right, So
Bucky Brooks, um, we do have an update on a
conversation that was had earlier in the hour here on
fs are the name Hotty Toddy was brought up. It
is not a play call by Kyle Shanahan or Kevin Stefanski.
(02:12:43):
It is not the name of a strip club in
the Bay area or the Minneapolis area. I thought that
would have been my go to. But we do have
an update. What is a hotty Toddy? And let's go
live to our Hotty Toddy insider Iowa Sam for the latest. Sam, Well,
you look at hotty Toddy. I think that actually the
term used by old miss football. They do like that.
They like they say Hotti totty. That's the thing you
(02:13:05):
ever heard that. Brian Finley comes in here a national update,
Anchory contin and says hot totty. Well, he's an all misgrad.
There you go. Um, So here's the thing. Bucky was
absolutely right, because what would take the edge off if
it was just bourbon and water? So it's water. It's
also black tea. It's honey, lemon juice, a cinnamon stick
(02:13:25):
and a lemon slice with bourbon in there. So you
know what you're you're telling me. I was saying, like,
that is tasty for me, the lemon. I would order
that up. And Jon is for you. Since we're talking
about hotti toddies, Well, this really wouldn't be for you
nor maybe maybe this would be for so much. But
(02:13:46):
they they say that you need to go to an
oh miss game and you need to go by the
grove while you have a hotti. They say that there
is a lot of talent in those things. However, you
guys don't fish in those ponds. We do not. We
do not fish in those I would have to take
I would have to take some other people with you.
(02:14:07):
Yeah or not? No? Yeah? Yeah? My only might only
work in Guadalara. The waters of Guadalara are where mine work. Uh.
Lee's well, you know, Lee can explain that I hear
on the show. Now let me ask you a question, though, Sam,
can you describe all the ingredients that are in that
(02:14:30):
one more time? Just read off those ingredients? Um? Yeah,
I didn't want it, so I didn't want to annoy
any you know Southerners who are used to drinking hot
Toddies or hotty Toddies. I'm not sure which ones which, right,
So what are the ingredients? Ingredients? Again, it's water, it's
black tea, it's honey. We got fresh lemon juice. And
I'm not giving out the how much you put it? All? Right?
So start over one at the time. I'm going to
(02:14:50):
tell you the benefit of each of those. Okay, all right,
So water, hydration, hydration, yes, black tea. Caffeination keeps you
up and awake while you're drinking through the growth. Honey. Uh,
your voice sounds good. Good for the throat, you can
go on and sing the national anthem. Fresh lemon juice, um, acidic,
easier to digest. A little bit of vitamin C in
(02:15:12):
there too, maybe good for the well not because you've
got two things that are necessary. You need to puck
her up with the lemon juice. That I feel like
we're talking about two different hotty toddy age, but I
could be wrong. So after the lemon water, this is
actually this is actually used to to help you get
over ailments. The bourbon in there really so jagger okay. Well,
back in the day it was it's made out of
(02:15:32):
roots or something, all right, um, And then we got bourbon.
We got a cinnamon stick, probably for flake, so bourbon
to get you drunk, a cinnamon stick for looks, a
little dessert added into it, and then one lemon slice
for aesthetics. Good. That's your hotti toddy hot So basically,
if you would like to be hydrated, caffeinated drunk, get
(02:15:54):
a sugar high and have the enamel ripped off your
teeth by the lemon. A hotty toddy is the drink
for you. So there, there it is. So it's uh,
I mean, or you could just swallow a pipe bomb.
I mean, like I just said, you you determine what
it is that you're into. But yeah, there it is
the Hotti toddy. Um so big big and old Miss
(02:16:16):
so big and big at Old Miss there by the way,
Lane Kiffin, Mike Leach, the egg bowl. How about that,
Bucky Brooks, give me some of that. Like, how many
sasquatches do you think Mike Leach is going to report
that he sees around Starkville. There are a lot of
woods in Mississippi. I mean, there's a lot of woods. Like,
of course you would take it the serious. Practically you
might see it. There's never been a sasquatch reported in Mississippi.
(02:16:38):
Abominable snowman. Okay, okay, good, abominable snowman. All right, um,
Bucky Brooks, Jona Stocks here on Fox Sports Radio from
the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios. All right, coming up next,
We're going to ask a very important question from Bucky
Brooks a potential shocking upset in the NFL this weekend.
How can it happen? Find out next year? On fs
(02:16:59):
are Me a bottle of bourbon? Jonas knocks Bucky Brooks
Here on Fox Sports Radio Company Alive from the Geico
Fox Sports Radio Studios. It is a final in the
Bay Area where the San Francisco forty Niners with a
seven to ten win over the Minnesota Vikings, and the
(02:17:22):
forty Niners will host the NFC Championship next weekend. Uh
and Bucky Brooks, we were watching this game during the
break and really there's just one way to kind of
sum this game up. The forty Niners kick the Vikings
ass physically dominated them. Just beat him up, beat him up,
dominated the game. They were able to run the ball,
They're able to do whatever they want to do. Defense
(02:17:44):
completely stifled the Minnesota Vikings offense. And so look hats
off to San Francisco forty Niners for what they've been
able to do their one game away from one to
the Super Bowl. This is a remarkable rod for the Niners.
But I think what it really shows is owners should
be more patient with people when it comes to putting
(02:18:05):
together the plan, uh, the forty niners. UM gave Kyle
Shanahan and and John Lynch six year contracts and it
took them three years for this to pop. They got
Jimmy Garoppolo in year two and he had the injury
and all that other stuff. But this is what it
looks like, you know, when you give people opportunities to
(02:18:26):
make it happen. And I also think that's why I
like the Browns job and the Giants job more than
than most people would, and to a to a certain extent,
the Carolina job, but based on what they went through recently.
So where San Francisco was at the time when they
hired Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch was they had just
had back to back one and done coaches. UM they
(02:18:49):
had Chip Kelly and then before that they had jim
tom Sula, and so they were kind of in this
spot to where, all right, you don't exactly want to
have another one and done situations, so you give give
him a longer term contract and tell them we're gonna
work with you. You're our guy. We want to sort
of right the wrongs that have been made the past
couple of years. It feels like you know, Joe Judge
(02:19:11):
is going to get the opportunity in New York with
the Giants to do the same thing based on the
Giants don't want to have back to back two and
done coaches. One coach fired mid during the season, the
next fired right after the season, and the Browns. I
know Jimmy has them as a bunch of money, but
at some point you don't want to continue to pay
three and four coaches at one time. So it feels
(02:19:33):
like those jobs are jobs that that whoever does whoever,
if you take over the head coaching gig Joe Judge
with the Giants and whoever gets the Brown's job, they're
gonna have an opportunity to really turn it around, hopefully,
but management ownership, they have to give them the opportunity
to do that, meaning you have to say, hey, no
matter what happens the first two years, I'm gonna give
(02:19:53):
you an opportunity to build a team the right way,
to create the culture that you need to create to
have a championship environment. And I must with it even
if fans and and and outsiders are criticizing us because
we don't have enough wins early in the process. I
think you have to hire the right person and you
have to give them an opportunity to see their plan
(02:20:14):
all the way through. Yeah, it'll be Uh, it's I
just this forty Niner team look damn good. And Jimmy
Garoppolo never had a playoffs stop start before. It's not
like he lit it up, as you've pointed out. You know,
he doesn't have these monster stats. He did throw a
bad interception, he was beat up early on in the
first half, but they just ran the ball down their throats.
(02:20:37):
And I just don't know how green Bay now lead
to lap Our executive producer, he's already calling a shot.
He's already saying, being a green Bay Packer fan, that
Green Bay is gonna win tomorrow and they're gonna go
on the road to play the forty Niners. I mean,
Lee at some point, you know, put it away, pal,
you don't have to flash it in front of everybody.
I mean, like, enough with the with the cockiness here
(02:21:00):
of the Green Bay Packers. You got your workout out
for you tomorrow against Seattle. That is true, but I'm
feeling good about it, and I think it's interesting. We're
going to see NFC North versus the NFC West in
both the divisional round games and in the NFC Championship.
I think it's fitting well so so we could have
rematches in UH in UH and it looks like what
we are going to have rematches in both UH as
(02:21:22):
it looks now and now. The reason I bring that up,
Bucky Brooks uh from the Getico Fox Sports Radio studios
is because you know the big game coming up later
on tonight kick off in about forty five minutes from now,
is the Ravens and the Tennessee Titans. Any shot at all?
(02:21:42):
Do you give Tennessee at pulling off the upset? Yes?
I give them a Really you think they can do it? Well?
I give them a shot. Yeah, because turnover is always
complaining to it. Also, how does Lamar Jackson handle everything?
How does he handle the pressure? How does he handle
um what is coming his way? He's been terrific, He's
(02:22:04):
played at the m v P level, But is he
really really, really ready to go to the next level.
That's what I want to see from you. I and
going into this game, I actually thought the one team
that would be the worst match, I mean, the one
team that that would have less of a chance than
any other team in the a f C would be
the Titans, just based on familiarity, Like they're the only
team in the a f C side of the bracket
(02:22:25):
that hasn't played Baltimore, and so there's that sort of
shell shock. And plus you mentioned you go from Tom
Brady and the Patriots last week to Lamar Jackson and
whatever the hell this nightmare is a week later. I
mean this, this could be a legitimate problem for Tennessee.
I think Baltimore is going to blow him out. You're
(02:22:46):
gonna blow him out, blowout city. Yeah, I think it's
I think it's a blot. I think they do it.
They do it differently than anybody else in the NFL,
and I just think, never seeing it before, you're gonna
have to And and let's not pretend like Ryan Tannehill
lit it up last week either. I mean Jimmy Garoppolos
Jimmy Garoppolo stats, I mean he looks like Dan Fouts
(02:23:09):
compared to what Ryan Tannehill was last year last week,
who had eight completions for seventy two yards. I think
it's night game. All this pent up waiting around a
couple of weeks, wanting to prove to everybody, Lamar Jackson
wanting to show everybody last year in the playoffs was
not the norm for him in these big time spots.
I think Baltimore is gonna hammer him. I wouldn't. I
(02:23:31):
wouldn't say hammer. I would say win. I would say,
would you say they win by ten points? Because that's
all I need? So nervous, I mean, not get not
not look again, not that I gamble on this stuff,
and it's not like this is this is one of
my Knox locks for the weekend overnights, which was the
Ravens minus nine and a half. It's not that at all.
(02:23:54):
I just I like Baltimore in this game, like the situation.
I mean, look, it's very favorable for them. This is
a team to is lights out. Um. They played the
game the right way, they run it, their physical defense,
they can rast a quarterback, they can create turnovers. I mean,
there's a lot of reasons as to why you would
say the Baltimore Ravens. The only thing that just makes
(02:24:14):
me pause young quarterback, just how how's he going to respond?
How's he going to respond to the big game, respond
to playing it again? Bucky Brooks Jonas knocks here on
Fox Sports Radio. We have great news. There's a quick
and easy way you could save money. Switched the guy
good only takes fifteen minutes to see if you could
say fifteen per center more on car insurance. Go to
Geico dot com and see how much you could save.
(02:24:35):
All right, coming up next, Uh it is uh the scraps.
Some things in the world of sports we have not
had a chance to get to, including why Bucky Brooks
may storm out of the studio after what he hears next.
Don't go anywhere a major situation could occur here on
Fox Sports Radio. But for all the latest from around
(02:24:56):
the world of sports, ladies and gentlemen, Well, thank you
very much, Jonas. And yes, it is a final in
Santa Clara, where the San Francisco forty Niners completed their
win over the Minnesota Vikings twenty seven to ten. The
final score the big numbers here, well, San Francisco out
gained Minnesota three hundred and eight to a hundred and
(02:25:17):
forty seven, and thus the Niners will be playing for
the NFC title for the first time since the fourteen season.
Coming up next to will be Tennessee playing at the
Baltimore Ravens Meanwhile, in the NBA, the Houston Rockets dominant
today one thirty nine one O nine. They beat the
Minnesota Timberwolves James Harden thirty two points, twelve rebounds, eight assists,
(02:25:40):
Russell Westbrook at thirty points, six rebounds tennessis as the
Rockets cruise to the victory. Right now, well in the
first quarter, Boston at eighteen lead over the New Orleans Pelicans.
That's what to forty four to play in the first quarter,
while chicagosen lead in Detroit to to like in the
(02:26:01):
first quarter of that game. We'll have We'll have more
news and sports coming up in just a moment, but
first let's get a word from our friends at Farmers.
Bundle home and auto with Farmers Insurance and you could
save an average of a better pairing than pineapple and pizza.
There I said it, called Farmers for a quote. Today
we are Farmers might average farms for fair insurance exchanges
(02:26:24):
and affiliates procsun avlable in every state. We'll get to
the scraps in a moment as we send it back
to Jonas Knox and Bucky Brooks. Thanks Ralph Company. A
live here from the Geico Fox Sports radio studios where
it's easy to say, center more on car insurance with Geico.
Got a guy go to a coverer call eight hundred
nine four seven Auto. The only hard part figuring out
which way is easier. Uh So we have got to
(02:26:46):
coming up here. In a little over ten minutes from
now on Fox Sports Radio, we will get a sneak peak.
Three more games in the NFL are three more games
in the world of football, two in the NFL, one
in college football, and surprising number in one of these games.
So we'll have that for you here on Fox Sports Radio.
Right now, though, it is time for a little something
(02:27:08):
we do on the show called this How could you
not get to? These stories are the scraps? And for
that we turn it over to Ralph Urvin our national update.
Acre here fs are to find out what the hell
we've missed so far at the show. Ralph, Well, let's
start in the college basketball arena where, well, it's maybe
(02:27:33):
not as great a day to be a tar Heel, Sorry, Bucky.
That's because the Clemson Tigers, you know, they barely beat
North Carolina in football this season. Now, of course they'll
play for the national title. But the men's basketball team
one for the first time in Chapel Hill seventy seventy
six in overtime. They had been oh in fifty nine
coming into this game. Wow. Now listen, here's the thing though,
(02:27:57):
because Clemson's football team has been so good good, it
feels like you kind of have a little bit more
respect for the win than you would before. Like I've
always felt that Duke football got kind of a boost,
name wise because Duke basketball is always good. North Carolina
football maybe got a boost because North Carolina basketball was
(02:28:17):
always good. So I'm not Ralph wants me to mock
the North Carolina tar Heels, and I won't do a bucket.
It's not gonna happen. No, We're about to be a
football school, so it's just a matter of time. As
being another year two, they will will turn it over
and so will We'll be known for our football and
basketball will kind of be secondary. How about that, Ralph,
nice try? It's not a nice try. I'm not looking
(02:28:40):
for anything here, just reporting this. What what is North
Carolina record? Now? Because deans what Roy White said? Dean Smith,
Jesus christ uh Roy Williams looks like he's just about
fed up with with what is that's frustrating. Look, many
(02:29:01):
guys used to win, and we are accustomed to winning.
This is unusual for us, unusual blue bounce back on
the air. So the that's absolutely horrible. That's a bad
that's a bad year for us. Sure is it says
that they're fourteen. They are fourteenth in the a c C,
(02:29:22):
tied with notre damn good thing. They're thirty teams in
the conference. What else, Ralph, Well, we've got news out
of Ohio where being a well, you know, you know Ohio.
They're they're they're dealing with medical marijuana issues and deciding
what is appropriate to be able to prescribe this So
(02:29:43):
anxiety disorders, autism, being on the spectrum, chronic pain, things
like that. But also on the list that has been
submitted to the State Medical Board is being a Bengals
and Browns fan. Is that like all that build up
for that one punchline? Ralph? Like, what are you working
on this? That's a real thing. This is a real thing.
(02:30:07):
I thought you were like working on your open mic
stuff like. This is one of twenty eight conditions submitted
to the State Medical Board during the twenty nineteen petition window.
Andrew Dice Irvan over there again. Shut up. Well, I'm
just reporting the news. So so who put this together? Who? Who?
(02:30:28):
Who decided to take a shot at the innocent Browns
and Bengals here? Well, there was a petition submitted to
the State Medical Board requesting that being a fan of
the Cleveland Browns or the Bengals should be considered as
qualifying condition because I guess it's just so traumatic, like
you know what, all right, let me let me And
of course the petition had to be signed by a
(02:30:48):
number of people, etcetera. Okay, So the Browns won seven
games this year? Correct? Did they win six or seven games? Six? Okay?
Six games this year? Man, Like they wouldn't winless a
couple of years ago. That's a decade under huge and
no kidding, Like that's more wins than Hugh Jackson put
together in one season. So I know that it's not ideal,
and for a normal franchise, it's it's a bad look.
(02:31:11):
But this is also the same franchise who a year
ago had an automatic bud light fridge opening uh extravaganza
throughout the country every time whenever they won their first game,
and it was on a Thursday night game, So like
like you've made strides as an organization, and if you're
the Bengals, hey look man, uh, you weren't happy with
(02:31:31):
Marvin Lewis. Apparently going to the playoffs wasn't good enough
for you, so you decided you needed to get him
out of town and you bring in Zach Taylor and
you almost didn't win a game. The entire did just
occur to me that this is Cincinnati, so maybe you
ought to talk to your good friend there. Who Andy Ferman,
if you can return my text? He's a lion, he's
an a hole. Wow. Yeah, it doesn't return my text,
(02:31:54):
and you have faced. It's like when Bucky's on Fox
Sports one. I sent him a text, he writes back,
who is this that? I thought? I thought we passed it.
I had the Lions. It was Dan Buyer, just to
get him to respond. I thought I thought we passed it.
I thought we kissed the made up that we did. Wow?
What else he got? Ralph? Well, we have locals in
(02:32:17):
a Lake Worth, Florida neighborhood that called the police. Here
we go. Can I just show the audience in because
it's been a while since we've done weird world to Ralph.
Ralph goes out of his way to find weird Florida
stories because he likes making fun of the state. I
didn't go out of my way at all on this one.
But the problem with Ralph because he's he's lacking professionalism
(02:32:38):
as a broadcaster. From time to time he can't help
himself but laugh before even he can even get the
story out. So go ahead, Ralph, what happened in Florida?
This guy, Ralph, be careful. Actually, it was pretty serious situation.
Neighbors heard distressing sounds coming from a nearby home. They
sounded like, is that Kirk Cousins, No, it's not um.
(02:33:08):
The police arrived. It was four officers in total. The
approach the owner, who was working on his wife's car
in the driveway. Well, the man went inside and brought
out the offending screamer, his part Rambo, who he taught
as he owned the parrot as a young boy and
taught him when he was a kid to say, get
(02:33:28):
me out of here, Get me out of here. And
that's what the bird was screaming. So the parrot was
trying to get it was trying to get out. The
parent was just screaming what had been taught, just being
a pain in the ass. Have you ever you ever
had a parrot before. We've had a parrot for like
thirty years. The thing won't die like eight mercury at
of a thermometer. It literally won't die each pasta. I
(02:33:49):
can't stand him. I can't stand him. I've never liked him.
He attacked me all the time. Uh, it's a a
like a green something like. Yeah, like so it's like
going to those like African macaws or I forget what
it is, relaxed lee, I forget what it is. But um,
it's just he's a pain in the ass. And what
(02:34:11):
he used to do is whenever the phone would ring,
right as you would go to answer in the house,
he would just start screaming hello, Hello, like just to
be an a hole, Like they're really obnoxious, They're terrible, terrible.
I believe you've done that here in the studio, Jonas. Uh, No,
I mean I might you know maybe a prank called
people from time to time and hit under the desk
(02:34:32):
and pretended to be certain people from uh you know
from Fox Sports Radio that that has happened from time
to time. But no, I would never do that. I
would never play those kind of games at all. Ever,
I don't know for I'll feel let you pet it
maybe man looks do you guys? Uh? Well done, Ralph.
(02:34:56):
And that is the weird World of Ralph with Ralph
Evan Jonas stocks Bucky. I'm sorry the scraps the same thing.
We're world Ralph the scraps. Uh, it's all phenomenal radio
and it was yours here on Fox Sports Radio. Jonas
knocks Bucky Brooks here on FS are Uh. Nick Bosa
is talking with the crew on NBC right now. If
(02:35:18):
you remember, he went down with what looked to be
a serious injury, only to rise from the ashes during
this forty niner went over the vikings pump up the
crowd as he walked off the field, and it looks
like he was never hurt. So was he what? What he?
What was your best guest with Nick Bosa? Was he
just trying to catch his breath or what was showing
off a little bit? Win knocked out of him and
(02:35:39):
got up and you know that's what he does. Interesting. Uh,
So there is uh, there is that with the forty
niners and Nick Bosa, who uh, look he likes some
some camera. Um, you know he's got he's got an
audience behind him. They seemed to be big fans of
his two So so good for for Nick Bosa, who
was taking in all of this with a with a
(02:36:01):
home game coming up next week against either the Packers
or the Seahawks after the win earlier. All right, want
to let you know we have great news. As a
quick and easy way you could save money. Switched to Geico.
It only takes fifteen minutes to see if you could
say fift center more on car insurance. Go to Geico
dot com and see how much you could save. All Right,
we are going to pick the brain of an expert
(02:36:22):
involving three games three games in the world of football.
Find out who it is next year n fs are
I don't know for I'll Phie'll let you pet him.
Jonas Knox Bucky Brooks here on Fox Sports Radio from
the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios. UH. The San Francisco
forty Niners are on their way to the NFC Championship Game.
(02:36:45):
They will be hosting the NFC title Game next weekend
against the winner of either Seattle or Green Bay. The
forty Niners a dominant ten win over the Minnesota Vikings.
So the fort Niners look good. Jimmy Garoppolo didn't need
to do a whole lot with the way that defense
played and that rushing attack. The forty Niners just just
(02:37:08):
pounded him in the second half and uh and get
the win. There. Does this change any of the conversation
um based on Kirk Cousins, is take any of the
luster off what Kirk Cousins did last week? Bucky Brooks,
you know, I don't I don't know how to treat
Kirk Cousins in this because I feel like we shouldn't
treat him every game we evaluate him in this this
(02:37:29):
long narrative. But he certainly didn't do him any favors
because he didn't play great. But no one on that
offense played well, So it's hard to put all of
this at his feet. But I mean, it's just another
in the long line of performances that you just wonder,
is he a guy that can get them over the
top on his talent alone? And I don't think anyone
could say, yes, yes, he's an upgrade. I mean, how
(02:37:50):
many teams in the NFL have a better roster than Minnesota,
not many three or four maybe yeah, not not not
not many that half talent. I mean they have ones
and twos on the outside of why receiver. They have
a running back in Dalvin Cook. The offensive line they're
working on. Defensively, up front they have two Hawks Everything
Griffin and Danil Hunter. They got two players at linebacker. Secondary.
(02:38:11):
Has been a little bit of a disappointment with Xavier
Rose not playing the way that we thought. But Harrison
Smith is solid. I mean, they're they're they're pretty sid
they don't have glaring issues and holes, and so you
would like to think that this team could get closer,
but for whatever reason, they just haven't been able to
get over the hump. One of the things that Bruce Gradkowski,
former NFL quarterback Pro Football Focus analyst who joined US earlier,
(02:38:33):
said was he was getting the feeling based on the
fact that Josh McDaniels got back on the plane and
went back to Boston after his interview, brought his wife
to Cleveland, interviewed for the head coaching job there with
the Browns. The fact that he wasn't hired on the spot,
and went back to Boston. Bruce's thought was, whoever the
loser of this forty Niners Viking game is is the
(02:38:57):
guy who's going to get the head coaching gig for
the rounds? Between Kevin Stefanski, the o C from Minnesota
and um uh salah yeah, Robert Sala, the defensive coordinator
for the forty Niners. I don't know why I blanked
on that. Um. They've been showing him all game long.
It looks like you could beat the hell out of anybody.
By the way. Uh So, either Robert Sala or Kevin
(02:39:19):
Stefanski we're going to get the head coaching gig. Based
on Bruce Gradkowski's guests was whoever lost would get the
gig because they would be available first. So if that's
the case and Kevin Stefanski is now available, do you
like the logic of Kevin Stefanski getting the job over
Josh McDaniels in Cleveland. I don't know. I think to
(02:39:40):
think about Kevin Stefanski and any of these guys, like,
what are they? What are they? Who are they? When
they're on their own? Mike Zimmer has such a strong
personality that when Kevin Stefanski is the offensive coordinated, well,
all the guys are going to listen to him. Because
they know that Mike Zimmer's the dead in the room.
Kenny command the room on his own. Is he stern enough?
Is he able to earn their respect, discipline them while
(02:40:03):
also encouraging, inspiring and uplifting them. I don't know. That's
something that only ownership will be able to know through
those conversations. But look, man, he has kind of been
the bell of the ball. There are a lot of
people talking about him in Cleveland because of the mix
of football and analytics and those things. I mean, shoot, man,
I have no way of knowing if he's qualified to
(02:40:23):
be a head coach. All right, Bucky Brooks, So we
have got to by the way, coming up about ten
minutes from now here on FS are next on Fox
Sports Radio. Brian no George Rice Stir will take over
here on these Fox Sports Radio airwaves. All right, So
I want to talk about three games. Uh Tennessee and
Baltimore is kicking off here soon. I think Baltimore blows
them out. You think there could listen. I just need Baltimore.
(02:40:46):
And this is not for gambling purposes, but if if
they could win the game by more than nine and
a half, I'd really appreciate it. So that's that's all
I'm saying, just for entertainment. But let me ask you
rapid fire on a couple of games. Houston, Kansas City?
Who do you like in that? Kansas City? Big? Big? Yeah?
I like him big too. Um. Also Seattle Green Bay,
who do you like? Toss up? That's a telephone for me,
(02:41:09):
because I think both teams are a little bit overrated. Yeah.
I think the Packers are overrated based on the fact
that they're tending one against teams that are five or worse. Um,
I just don't know. Seattle just does. I don't know
if they have enough weapons. With the injuries and and
and the like, I don't know if they have enough
to really challenge him. I mean, do you and again
not this is nothing to do with gambling, but do
you think that maybe Seattle might be able to Do
(02:41:34):
you think Seattle might you know, maybe be able to
not lose by more than four and a half points?
Do you think that's just four and a half? All right?
Clemson l SU, who do you got got in their
heavy underdogs? Now? All right? Jonah Stocks Bucky Brooks back
next week here on fs are
