Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to sports. I don't know if it's the
first day of school feeling. It's not the first day
of summer feeling. But it's a different feeling for sure
because it's our first Sunday without football and it's of
NFL football. We'll put it that way. It is a
different feel on this February ninth of not having an
NFL game to either look ahead to, two heck preview
(00:26):
to look back on. It's a little interesting feel on
this Sunday from R I mean, is it different for you?
It is definitely different for me. What on earth are
we going to talk about? Well, we've got there's a
good news. There is not a shortage of things to
talk about, even though there are no football games going
(00:46):
on in front of us for us to break down
like we did all season long and red Zone radio.
We're gonna take a look at, really, who is the
real m v P of the NBA season as we
enter the All Star break coming up this week Chicago
next week, we'll have all the festivities and uh yeah,
and then there's the new league called the XFL that
has launched. Will dive into that and a whole lot more.
(01:09):
I from tries to beat his all time high of
eight points on easy as one to three four that
comes up next hour, So just a lot to get to.
But I do think that we start off this now
non football season segment, if you will, with one of
the main storylines that I think is going to be
the main storyline this off season, at least over the
(01:29):
next couple of weeks, depending on what happens with the
Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott, because the franchise tag could
be headed for Dak Prescott. There was talk this week
that Stephen Jones, so the son of Jerry Jones, saying
they're fixing to get a deal done, that something could
be done soon, but he from There was also interesting
that a report came out that Dak turned down a
(01:50):
thirty three million dollar a year contract extension in September.
So that news comes out, there's talking about, Okay, we're
gonna get a deal done. I'm wondering if the Cowboys
were the ones to plant that seat out there that
he turned down the deal. But the Dak Prescott story
is obviously gonna be one of the biggest stories we
followed this off season year it is, and if he
did turn down thirty five million dollars thirty three based
(02:17):
on his performance so far. Where would that rank him
amongst average salary? It would be fifth. These would be
the quarterbacks that would be ahead of him, Russell Wilson
at thirty five million, Ben Roethlisberger at thirty four million,
Aaron Rodgers, and Jared Goff at thirty three and a
half million dollars. So the thing, the only problem with
that is, and I know why he bucks back is
(02:39):
because of the Jared Golf aspect of it. All of
the other three guys ahead of him, Okay, we get it, Yeah,
all right, we get it. All of those guys have
Super Bowls, right, all of the all those guys have
m vps except for Roethlisberger. Right, well, Russell doesn't have one,
but he should. He should just played at that caliber
(03:01):
for quite some time. Um, And so I now I
see why he's bucking about not taking the thirty three million,
which is ridiculous given now he puts himself in a
position where he didn't have that type of year where
he started off the season hot and everybody was like, oh,
(03:23):
he's gonna be the best decision he's ever made. They're
gonna win the division, They're gonna go to the super Bowl,
and YadA, YadA, YadA YadA, and then you look up
and you fall flat. You don't even make the playoffs
in a terrible division. Comes down to the last game
of the season. You go up against a depleted Philadelphia
Eagles team, you lose. I mean, what what do you argue? Where?
(03:47):
Where are your bargaining chips? If you're in the Dak
Prescott representation camp, Like, what are you going to bring
to the table to garner thirty four million or more
a year? I mean, because we know someone who is
going to get much more than that. Patrick Mahomes is
(04:10):
forty million. He's a forty million dollar a year quarterback. Right,
So once you start skating up thirty three thirty five, Look, bro,
I get it. The market. It is what it is is,
it's what it bears. But you haven't done enough. Although
you are a winning quarterback, right, you are a winning quarterback.
(04:30):
You look at Jared Golf and you're like, that's that's
the wrench, right, that's the thing. Where as a player
and as an agent, you can't. You can't wrap your
head around. Okay, we think we're better than Jared Goff
and you maybe the fact of the matter is Jared
Golf playing in the Super Bowl. Yeah, that's right, stick
(04:53):
a team. He's taking a team to the super Bowl.
So you know it. You get to a point where
and then almost one and and into your point about
what happened in those biggest games in seeing the biggest
games that the Cowboys this season did not make the playoffs.
Dac statistically had a very good season as a starting quarterback.
(05:16):
But when you would go and look at the games
where they needed Dak Prescott, I would I would argue
that when you look at what they have done, their
biggest game of the year was that Eagles game in
Week sixteen, DAC went or forty four for two hundred
and sixty five yards. They didn't score a touchdown. As
quarterback rating with seventy four point five. They had a
game against New England. I remember that you and I
(05:38):
were sitting here watching that game in a in a
a foggy, rainy day in Foxborough. Thirteen to nine was
the final. DAC went nineteen of thirty three for two
hundred and twelve yards, no touchdowns, an interception, and a
passer rating of sixty four point two. They lost to
the New Orleans Saints in a game earlier in the season,
a big game in New Orleans twenty to a thirty
(05:59):
three two and twenty three yards and seventy three point two.
The week after that, they played Green Bay and remember
green Bay went down to Dallas dat through for four
hundred and sixty three yards but two touchdowns, three interceptions
in a passer rating of eighty three point eight. The
point being in the four biggest games that they had
in the regular season, Dad had four four of his
(06:23):
worst passing games. There was one other game where he
had a passer writing that was like eighty three point
two in the game they lost to the Bears. But
in the biggest games from Doc wasn't there. And that's
what makes it so difficult, I think for Dallas to
get over that hump, because you are making the investment,
but you kind of know in the back of your
mind that it's not warranted. You're just hoping and praying
(06:47):
that maybe he could get better, that maybe Mike McCarthy
can can make the change to him to show up.
And there's there's no reason for him to be the
highest paid quarterback in the National Football League, and so
I just see the Cowboys in this situation. It's almost
like the leak of the thirty three million dollars and
the fixing to get it done is we're gonna hug you,
but we're also gonna stab you in the back as
(07:09):
we negotiate. That's where I think that Dallas is such
a rocket a hard place because the golf number because
the highest paid and when it really gets down to it,
in the biggest games, he wasn't there, and he wasn't
and do you pay somebody that type of money. They
got to be the face of the franchise. They gotta
be the leader in that locker room. Um, it just
goes to show you how much they value Ezekiel Elliott
(07:32):
over Dak Prescott. Right, two years left on a deal,
he decides he was gonna hold out. They back the
seriously look at it. I I and I agree because
I think we have had the argument as well of
if you're the Cowboys were gonna go to this, if
they were to go to the Super Bowl, would be
on the shoulders of Ezekiel Elliott and to see to
(07:55):
see Jerry Jones give in. But that's the other part
of it is Jerry Jones is on this clock, and
it's a clock of winning a super Bowl now. It's
not maybe winning a super Bowl in six years, like
he wants it now. And that's to your point about
Ezekiel Ellie is Yeah, I think we all argued that
Ezekiel Elliott was the guy that was going to ride
there if they were going to go to the super Bowl.
He was the guy they were going to ride. But
(08:17):
in the end, it's also Jerry Jones just being like, listen,
you know, life is short. Who knows how long I'm
gonna be around here. I need to get this done.
And so he's like really willing to get this done.
And that's that could be the deck situation as well.
But and and it looked and it could and and
he can put himself in a position of being a
(08:41):
franchise tag quarterback and the Dallas coup was decided that
they want to move off of him mhm for someone
else Teddy Bridgewater, right, I mean, yeah, they're options out there,
like he's going to be a free agent. Well, if
(09:03):
they didn't use the frat, if they don't use That's
what I'm saying, Like, this is it and when you
look at it, like we just said, someone who has
two years left on their contract, with no possible way
of getting away, getting out, get anything, they decided we're
going to give him ninety million dollars and our quarterback,
(09:24):
who was on the last year of his deal, we're
going to do nothing. That says a lot in a
quarterback based league. You know, the ninety million, You say
the ninety million, And what pops up into my mind
is for Dac three years, ninety million dollars, Like, if
you were to pay him ninety million dollars average wise,
(09:45):
it's below a bunch of quarterbacks, it's below Carson Wentz,
it's below that Jared Goff threshold. It would be right
at what Matt Ryan is, but it would also be
more than what Kirk Cousins got. And remember Kirk Cousins
does the three year deal. You know, if I'm if
I'm DAK and in a year, you obviously want to
you obviously want to cash in as much as you
can and get that money when you can. But I'm
(10:06):
almost wondering too if you were to be like, all right,
you know three years, nine million, well, ninety nine million
wouldn't work because of the thirty three that he turned down,
but to to make it in a three year deal
instead of a five year deal or a six year deal.
Where did you say, hey, you know what, Doc, we
will pay you for what you've done, but also realize
(10:27):
that we're not going to commit and have us hamstrung
in years four and five with a contract. Just give
him the money that he wants for the three years
have improved it and that would be fine with his money,
and then you can see what happens in three years.
It kind of fits Jerry's timeline. It would fix what
the Cowboys have to do if you gave him like
a Kirk Cousin sort of deal. And it makes sense
because for Dak Prescott, I'm taking the three year fully
(10:53):
guaranteed deal, and then I'm I'm coming back to the table.
I'm coming back to the table. Yeah, I'm coming back
to the table before him thirty right, I'm coming and
and and now I only sign a five year deal somewhere,
doesn't have to be in Dallas. But now the money
(11:14):
is going to be up with over two hundred million
dollars by then, because when you have Patrick Mahomes getting
ready to be up, and then a couple of years
later you have Lamar Jackson about to be up. Right now,
you put yourself in a position to cash in with
this market, with this market bears, and then you're not hamstrong.
(11:40):
Like we saw Aaron Rodgers, right, he was like wait wait, wait, wait,
wait a minute, wait a minute. He had two years
left on his deal and he was like, I'm too far,
I'm underpaid because he took a five year deal with
the what what the market bear? Now you see all
these young guys and now you come back to the table.
But if you're free and clear after three years and
(12:01):
think about it like this, it's it's just pretty much
a two year deal because if you do ball out,
you do win the division, you do end up going
to the playoffs and and going to the at the
least the NFC Championship game. Now on after that second year,
yeah right ye? And and quarterback is different than every
(12:23):
other position. Your money goes up as you get older.
I mean were like in the NFL, like really in
moth times, like when you can get second and third contracts.
As you say, defensive ends maybe not wide receivers some,
but that's about a running backs. We know that's not
the case, but you can do that in the NFL.
If you were to give Dac a contract, let's say
thirty four and a half million dollars, I don't think
you can make him the highest paid quarterback in the
(12:44):
National Football Again, I just don't think average salary. But
you give him thirty four and a half put him
second behind Russell Wilson. It's good for the Cowboys, it's
good for Dac. It's in that neighborhood of thirty three million.
But you give him enough. I think that's how it
works out, and he from It's more than you would
make on the franchise to Egg, which is project projected
to be about twenty seven million dollars next season for
the quarterback position, So you'd be gaining in about seven
(13:07):
and a half million dollars if you were in that scenario.
And instead of being gamed by the system, this is
when you become savvy and you game the system. Right, Okay,
just give me a three year deal. I'm taking fully
guarantee me for three years. I'm good. The number has
to be ninety plus, right, Yeah, you take it. It's
in your It's also in your window with Ezekiel. Elliott's
(13:28):
likely lifespan in the NFL probably about three more years, right,
I mean, who knows what I mean? Things always change
in the NFL, but that seems to be the timeline
of a running back nowadays. Easy from Salam. I'm Dan Baio.

Fox Sports, Innifil in center, Adam Caplan joins us for
our first visits of the official offseason. Hello, Adam, how
are you guys gonna talked to yet? It is? And uh,
we saw a football here, believe or not. And we
pro football the the new with the new version of
(14:37):
the XFL. So I remember the first one twenty years
ago was certainly different from the one we have over
the last two days. How how is this viewed in
NFL circles, whether it's the Alliance, whether it's this XFL,
whether it's the one you talked about that was like
twenty years ago. How is this viewed in NFL circles?
Actually a professional I've talked to some guys are actually
working in it, and the differences this time Vinclcman and
(14:59):
his people are spending. They've obviously had more time to
get this together where they rushed at the last time.
You've got real NFL ex coaches and you've got ex
executives running it. Uh. That that to me is why
I think so far it looks like it has a
chance to be a success. The crowds have been pretty good. Now.
The only question you have is how many free seats
do they give away? Because the announced crowd obviously just
(15:20):
not tell you how many people actually pay to get in, right,
they can't. Uh. I guess if you don't have anything
to do on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, you wanna
take your kids to a ball game. Uh, it's not
a bad idea. You know. The tickets can't be as expensive.
Nobody can go. A family four couldn't possibly go to
(15:41):
an NFL game, So I guess they have that form.
But for me, the thing I wanna know is has
the NFL championed this new XFL not yet from it.
It's gonna take time, and I know that had the
alliance made it for maybe three years, there might have
been a chance answer that they could have a relationship
(16:02):
sort of like the CFL does with the NFL. But
we're years away from that. They've got to prove that
they can actually be around. But I think the great
thing is when you've got ESPN, Fox putting their games on,
you have legitimate broadcast partners. And as I said earlier, Vincentman,
the owner of the WW he's learned a lot from
the past experience twenty years ago, so it gives us
(16:24):
a chance. Whereas with the Alliance. Last year, the football
was great, The way they ran it was very good,
but the problems they had no money, And this time
around they've certainly got a lot of money. Adam Kaplan
joining us here on Fox Sports Sunday. Uh, it was
a week ago at this time we were getting ready
for kickoff of Super Bowl fifty four between the Niners
in Chiefs. We know the outcome, Chiefs win, Niners lose.
So one of the natural storylines from that, Adam is, Okay,
(16:48):
are the forty niner is going to have a hangover?
How are they built for the future. I actually have
that same question about the Kansas City Chiefs. With this victory,
we think, oh, Patrick Mahomes is there, He's gonna go
to seven Super Bowls in his career, But how is
this team set up to I don't want to say
repeat performance, but at least to try to get back
to the Super Bowl next year in the next couple
(17:09):
of years. Yes, So, Dan, the the Chiefs are really
set up pretty well here with Pastrick Mahomes, because even
if they don't get a deal done this spring, they
have next year. They have this coming season then plus
two franchise text so that he's going to be their
quarterback to any re retires at the very least. Uh,
they've got Tyreek kill if he stays out of trouble.
They've got him signed long term. Sammy Watkins is most
(17:31):
likely going to be asked to take a pay cut, who,
by the way, played great in the Super Bowl is
best game as a chief when they really needed it. Uh.
They're set up pretty well with their tackles or signed
long term. Kelsey's probably due for an extension over the
next year. The big one though, is Chris Jones. They're
they're outstanding defensive tackle at a great Super Bowl with
three pass deflections. He just finished up his rookie deals,
(17:52):
so they have to make a decision on him. They
were nowhere closed before the season started, so both sides
to agree to table discussions until after the season was over.
So I think for the most part, they're in pretty
good shape here. But we all know this. If you've
got a franchise type quarterback like Patrick Mahomes and you've
got a play color like any Reid, they're gonna have
a chance to be great every year. And I don't.
(18:14):
It's it's hard to after what the Niners did to him,
which about Patrick Mahomes here, and he still got the
job done in the fourth quarter. You have to really
feel good about Patrick Mahomes in terms of being able
to handle any difficult situations. Yeah, I do. And we
saw the growth there because for the most part of
that game, Jimmy Garoppolo actually outplay Patrick Mahomes up to
a point and then all of a sudden, it just
(18:34):
it just clicked on. But let's talk about the San
Francisco forty Niners and Jimmy Garoppolo. Is there any buyer's remorse?
Do they still feel that Jimmy Garoppolo is the quarterback
to lead this team back to the Super Bowl? Yea
from it was interesting so Cole Shanahan, there were serious
of questions that the media asked him this week for
the season ending press conference, and the com made it
(18:56):
very clear that garoppolos this guy and he wouldn't want
anyone anyone else. And that's fine. Remember it was it
was Kyle's call to make the trade a couple of
years ago, and yeah he didn't. He Garppolo didn't have
a great second half. Uh one turnover you could certainly
put on him, but they got to the Super Bowl
with this guy. And let's not forget he was coming
off of a c l reconstruction and he was certainly
(19:18):
ahead of pace. Now the Niners have a much more
difficult and challenging freegency issue with Eric Armstead, Jimmy Ward,
Emmanuel Sanders, uh and a couple other key players that
are not signed. So uh, they've got some challenges here
with a cap and John Lynch g M already went
on record saying, look, we're really not going to be
involved with free agency very much, and they're gonna What
(19:38):
they're gonna do is they're gonna try to get a
lot of their freegans resigned. Adam Caplet joining us here
on Fox Sports Sunday. He's from Salama. I'm Dan Buyer
e from and I just started off the show a
little bit ago talking about Dak Prescott. There was the
Stephen Jones fixing to get a deal done than the
leak of the thirty three million dollar a year contract
that Dak turned down. I we we even I thought
(20:00):
maybe a short term deal could be good for Dad
if you got a Kirk Cousins type of deal. Is
that even in the cards or even in the picture
for the Cowboys your dack to do that. Yeah, they haven't.
They haven't offered him from what I understand, they haven't
gone the fully guaranteed contract for three three years like
Cousins Gott which is which at the time was historic.
Then we saw Russell Wilson get the UH major deal,
(20:23):
the best quarterback deal in NFL history, with thirty five
million a year, and that the guaranteed signing was very
very strong. Um, he's listened. Dad's got a really good
agent in Todd France. Todd is a guy that's one
of the top three contract agents in the business. He's
not going to sign an undervalued deal with UH the
cb A expiring over the next year. So and then,
by the way, it could get done over the next
(20:45):
couple of months. And then you want to see where
the cap goes. We know the cap is gonna be
a minimum of two million. Why would you take a
deal that's less than what the numbers could be if
he would be a free agent. Remember, Dak does not
have a fifth year option attached to his contract because
he was not drafted in the US round. So he
knows that the Cowboys really only have two franchise tags.
So they have a couple of ways to go here. Uh,
(21:07):
the Cowboys have some leverage, use to tag, but down
the line they don't get a deal done. Now you're
you're looking at potentially if they wait two years, you
could be looking at forty five million dollars per season,
because after my Homes gets this deal done, which will
be at a minimum forty million a year, the contracts
are just gonna go up and up and up. Yeah,
And that's what Dan and I were talking about. Wouldn't
it be advantageous for dak right now? Say if they
(21:29):
came to the table and they were like, hey, we
got a three year, ninety two million dollar fully guaranteed contract. Um,
do you sign that? And then you give yourself Now
you're making above what you'd make if you were franchised
twice and in that set, and that's at the end
of that second of the three years, you know that
(21:50):
they would have to go to the table and renegotiate
a long term deal. So you put you know, roughly
sixty plus million in your pocket and then you end
up getting a long term, five year deal when the
money's up. Anyway, you know, I like that offer. I
like that thinking better because yeah, he takes a little bit,
he takes less per year, but he's getting fully If
(22:12):
you could do the Kirk Cousins stuff contract, which the
whole contract is fully guaranteed. But the problem is that's
an older deal. That that's a two year old deal,
certainly historic and ford thing for the Vikings. And now that,
by the way that deal is can expire after the season.
So I don't know that he would even do that,
because again, we may be we may see a fully
guaranteed contract for four years. You know, we've seen three years,
(22:34):
but we haven't seen four years for a quarterback, and
that could be coming here. That would be amazing. By
the way, what does an NFL insider do in their
first weekend when there is no NFL catch catching up
on office work? I'm actually working on free agency. I
have a an Excel file where I asked the NFL
people to help me rank them by position. So I
call coaches and executives and I just run some players
by them and how they would how they see them
(22:56):
kind of helps me get an idea of where these
guys will go off the board, uh for free agency.
And and by the way, the quarter that this could
be an historic quarterback class for free agency. Typically we
don't see anyone who's any good, you know, go to
the free agency quarterback. But this one could be historic,
depending what happens over the next four to five weeks.
And let me actually that's about that. Where does Ryan
(23:17):
Tannehill fit in this free agent market for quarterbacks? Given
his rebirth in Tennessee. Yeah, I liken that for him
to the Nick Foles deal, about twenty million a year, uh,
probably about forty million fully guaranteed that signing because both
of those guys were seen as just journyman quarterbacks, probably backups,
and then nick Foles had the historic Super Bowl run
(23:39):
and that got him the big deal with Jacksonville. What's
interesting about the Jacksonville deal was Nick Foles did not
have another deal even close to what Jacksonville gave them.
So when you look at Ryan Tannehill, I think he's
in a similar situation. I think the most value that
tammy Hill has is to his own football team where
they're not asking to throw the ball very much. That
that that it seems to work with tadne Hill and
(24:00):
Conny Hills in his thirties, he's been over he's been
able to overcome the injury issue. Remember he got traded.
He was only supposed to be a backup for the
for the Titans, and we saw what happened. He took
over the starting job. And right now, when you look
at Tanny Hill, if one of two things are gonna happen,
don't forget Derrick Henry is a free agent. One of
those two guys is probably gonna get the franchise tex
whoever they don't get a deal done with the other
(24:20):
guy is gonna get the tag man there, Ryan tanney Hill,
sweepstick who would have fun. You can find him on
Twitter at kaplan NFL. Adam, thanks so much. We'll do
it again. So yeah, I appreciate your alright, and zero
Tom Brady questions there. I was gonna stay away. We
are going to have so many weeks of Tom Brady
(24:41):
and there's so much other interesting things to talk about,
so many other players. I like the Ryan Tannehill conversation
over the Tom Brady conversation because now you're you're in
a position to where you got a guy who you
know was pretty much it was over for him and
he was gonna be a journeyman back up from for
the next five or six years. He's implemented as a
(25:03):
starter in Week eight, I believe in Tennessee and he
did nothing but take him to the a f C
Championship Game. How do you not, you know, have to
really look at this guy and see his value has increased?
Do you think the rest of the league's man? I
hope Tannehill doesn't go back to Tennessee, Like, do you
think the division of what he's signed, because he's probably going.
(25:23):
I mean, he's probably going to be back because Adam
said the value of the team that values the most
is Tennessee. But do you think the rest of the
a f C South is liked? Jeez, hey, look they
can say what they want, man, Ryan Tannehill, and it's
very hard to do. It's very hard. He was on
pace to be someone like Ryan Fitzpatrick right where it
(25:46):
was a spark, but then at some point the spark
fizzles out and then in ten years from now we
look in So he's played for nine other teams or
whatever that is, but he seems to have found a place.
I think of the trust that Mike Vrabel has in
him within that offense as immense in all players need
(26:08):
is an opportunity in the right system, and it seems
like if they can Uh resign Derrick Henry and they
get to to to continue build that team the way
it is when you don't need him to throw at
forty five times although he had uh several games this
year over three hundred plus yard passing with multiple touchdowns.
(26:30):
He can throw the ball down the field, which they
didn't have in Marcus Mariota. Easy from Salam, I'm Dan Buyer.

Fox Sports Radio Studios. Mariota's name gonna be in that
free agent pool as well, likely as a backup, but
just he's gonna be in that pool. I don't know.
Should we hop into the pool with David gascon is
gonna give us the latest of what's uh, what's happening? Hello,
(26:50):
David Off guys, Let's start things off first. In the NBA,
a couple of games today, one of them taking place
in Okay. See round has forced to hangle it back
to an open Tatum clean look at it three and
that's money job and that's that's that those young Lions
one line hadn't eaten yet, he said, you know here,
(27:11):
eat this, eat this raindeer Jason Tatum, right, is that
on the call Celtics Radio Network Right now they leave?
Everybody can't do this, guys, okay nine six ninety one
is a scar later and take Clippers and the Cavaliers.
No Kawhi letter in this ball game long with Patrick Beverley.
(27:32):
Patrick Beverley has got a sore right groin. Kawhi letter
load management, so he's taken the day off. College basketball
is seen only two games. The top twenty five, number
nine team Butler got beat down by Marquette seventies sift
seven and number twenty five Houston skunked Wichita State seventy
six to forty three. A score in that ball game
xfl Action New York Guardians beat the Tampa Bay Vipers
(27:54):
twenty three to three. St. Louis the Battle Hawks and
the Dallas Renegades play right now, there's no score. Ballgame
earlier was on Fox, this one on ESPN. I forgot
to mention it. I forgot Dan. I have an apology
to make for you. I guess this could be for ating,
but this is more for Dan Buyer. When the final
nine seconds Yer leading about a hundred astick fans right
(28:19):
behind me, having themselves a party and going out tonight
because this game is over here at the Corner Arena
at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, twenty
four and oh what do you at, Dan fire? I
don't know, I don't know. I don't hate the Aztecs
at all. First of all, came in here, Tom there
only twenty three. And when I was like the hate
(28:43):
in his number one, when they did the top sixteen
for the bracket of what the bracket would be, there
was a twenty three and oh next to San Diego State,
So that's all. That's all I was saying. Heter Wait, wait,
what are the rankings even say? Like so they have
the rankings been updated? But the four it's an honest mistake.
It's not an honest If you were true to the
(29:04):
sport and following all of these teams, you would know
that they don't the new rings don't come out to Monday. No,
I know they come out to Monday. I do them
in my updates every single Monday. Baylor's number one again,
shame on you, my duke. And in San Diego State
run out the top five really that's usually what it is,
really captually, what it is. You feel the hating here, right, guys?
(29:27):
I remember because earlier in the season he said that
they were frauds. Yeah he did say that. Yeah, he
didn't mention that. No, we were talking because and you
guys started to talk November College. You know, they're sending
you out east as well. You know what the hell's
up with that? That's because Gonzaga is a real program.
(29:48):
They west all right, you feel the hate permeating in
his room. You're just you're disgusting right now? What's your
team again? Ohio State got crushed today? Yeah? What's your
(30:09):
faffiliation with the on the bubble you grew up in? Uh?
I love this, this is this is always funny, just
child and ridiculous. I don't think it's funny. I think
it's annoying and childish. That's why I continue to do it.
I'm taking lessons from my eight year old when he's
(30:30):
dealing with my five year old. He's very childish and
very annoying. So dust, I'm bringing that to you. So
that's the way it is. It's just and when you
don't really have an allegiance to something, then you're You're
kind of all over the place, and that's that's not me,
I just not. Actually, the most hurtful thing about it
is we've probably known each other for so long time,
(30:52):
and so this is the only way I can roll
you up. This is it like you're my guy. I
love you, but this is the only way I can
get under your get any like I'm not even gonna
fake radio it. He did this two months ago. I
got so mad, I didn't even want to talk to you.
Went home. Is just like you know what that I
know I didn't say that. I said that bleeping from
(31:13):
that bleep get him at bleeping Salama. I love you, man,
and I'm very protective over my athtecs. Okay, here's the
great thing about it. I've never even talked trash about that.
I know the fact that you came in and you
took a win away from them, that was that was enough?
(31:35):
And who wasn't last night? Was it you task state?
Last night? Who was it? A force? That's what I
want place to play up there, altitude and all of that.
That wasn't tough for us, But you know which is there?
Probably it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. All we can
do is play the team's on the schedule, right, That's it.
(31:57):
That's all we can do. You know, I can't make
the schedule. Three quadrant one win so far doesn't matter.
Guess what, we've won all the games, so it didn't
matter what quadrant you're in. You're not beating. The toughest
part about it, I would say, though, for a San
Diego State team is you do have to run the table, right,
because that's the only way you're going to get the
(32:17):
number one seed. And which is okay that that happens, right,
We're okay with that. We knew that coming into the season.
Once momentum started, we have some big games. I will
Sam can tell you about that one in particular. Um, well,
we uh beat the Brakes off his beat namesake team.
(32:40):
He would go, had a nine point halftime. You guys
had a great second half. You're a very good second
half team, were very good people away people away win
by ten. Yes, so that's what nineteen points win. Just
to clarify, David Gascon played a highlight from yesterday and
failed to tell us that Phil Mickelson is right now
in second place at beach. Is that what happened is that.
(33:04):
I mean, he's three shots off the league. Nick Taylor's
leading with Phil is only three shots back. No one
cares four. We got five games left at the University
of UH San Diego State, I would and you know
New Mexico at Boys State, it's tough to play up there.
(33:25):
Unl v U s DS is that UH Colorado State
is actually really hotmakers at Sam. Look, Sam has already
been dealt with. Okay, he's dealt with. He's uh, he's
a tournament. No you won't. Sorry, I don't know if
you guld We held him to nine points. Luca guard
(33:48):
that guy who's who's the maniac? Right? What's the averaging
this year? He's leading the league in UH in college
basketball and double doubles? And he what did he have
against us? Again? Nine? Guess nine points? This is officially
tournament losing control of the show. But this is me
regaining control of the show. We are coming to be
alive from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios. It's easy
(34:10):
to say more on curR incterns with Geico. Go to
Geico Comma calle a hundred nine seven auto. The only
hard part figuring out which way is easier. The Rockets.
Are I guess rolling? The Thunder? Are I guess rolling?
So who's better without who? Russell Westbrook or the Thunder.
We'll talk about it next year on Fox Sports Sunday,
Fox Sports Sunday. He's even salam. I'm Dan Buyer, glad
(34:33):
to have you along on this Sunday. Got our rise
on some XFL, some NBA, some golf, but uh, let's
go to the diamond. Breaking news from Fox Sports. David
Gascon gives us the latest. You know, Dan, I think
we can trade into your Milwaukee blue for some Dodger blue.
(34:55):
Why not? Yeah, Dodger blue all this place is. That's
true Jeff Pass and making it official today with the trade. Uh,
Dodgers in Boston. Red Sox have a separate deal, so
Bets does come to Los Angeles along with David Price
in exchange for Alex Verdugo and shortstop Jeter Down. So
(35:16):
it'll be the Dodgers and the Red Sox on that trade.
L A is striking another deal with Kenton Mada being
bound for Minnesota, but it's a separate deal because of
the medical reports. So right now we're waiting for confirmation
on that. There'll be some cash involved with Maad to
go and bound for Minnesota. Okay, so we can finally
say though that Moogie Bets is about to be a Dodger.
All right, there it is that Dodger fans have been
(35:37):
waiting for this spring training right around the corner. Should
be an interesting weekend baseball. By the way, camp's opening
up on Wednesday, and Rob Manfred even said last week
that they hope to have the Red Sox investigation into
their sign stealing allegations. That investigation wrapped up by the
started camp on Wednesday, so we could see something maybe
as soon as tomorrow or Tuesday. We're watching the Celtics
(36:00):
and Thunder right now, you're listening to us tell you
about the Celtics and Thunder one tender one or two
Boston leads with a little over a minute to go.
But this is the Thunder team e from that is
sitting there in the sixth spot in the Western Conferences,
were on the verge of entering the All Star break,
with them breaking ties with Russell Westbrook, with them doing
the deal uh to send Paul George to the Clippers
(36:22):
and getting the package that they got back. Who does
this say the most about? Does it say the most
about Russell Westbrook, Does it say the most about Sam Presty,
Does it say the most about Billy Donovan? That these
teams and I'm saying the Thunder and Rockets as well,
and you know, even the Clippers for that matter, As
all of these offseason moves came about, who do you
(36:44):
think maybe shines the brightest in all of this. I
think the fact that Chris Paul, who was sent to
the Thunder to die after that mega extension, he signed
with Houston, I think it says a lot about him.
I think he goes to a team with a bunch
of uh misfit toy soldiers and he has that steady leadership,
(37:08):
the same leadership we saw him have with the Rockets
until you know, the injury and it just didn't work anymore. Um.
But anywhere Chris Paul has been, the team has been successful,
the team has made the playoffs. And that's just goes
back to his early days a New New Orleans Hornets
before they change to the Pelicans. Uh So, anywhere Chris
has been, he goes to the Clippers and all of
(37:29):
a sudden, the Clippers become a playoff team and a
division winner and so it says a lot about him,
even at this age, his ability to be that force,
that leadership force, and that captain of a ship is
you know what you want your point guard to be.
I have a different answer in mind, but I'm gonna
piggyback on what you're saying. What I also think is
(37:50):
unique about what Chris Paul has done. Was he in
this in this day and age of basketball where we
not call it position less basketball. Basically it's what the
Rockets are doing with the going with p J. Tucker
at the five, But in positionless basketball we always think
of it as the three, four and five, never necessarily
really is the one in two. And So when you
(38:11):
see Chris Paul come in, what was one of the
questions about whether he was gonna work in Houston or not,
was okay, could he work with James Harden who wants
the ball so much? When you went to Oklahoma City,
not only do you do the deal for shape Gil
just Alexander, you already had Dennis Schroeder already on that team.
So to be able to make it work with all
of those pieces and figure out a way to give
(38:32):
winning basketball, I think it's a tip of the captain
Chris Paul. But I think it's also a tip of
the cap to Billy Donovan, who, by the way, was
thought to possibly be on his way out of town
as recently as last year. And to see how they
have turned it around. The Thunder are going to be
the marquee story that we're gonna be talking about down
the stretch. It's gonna be Lakers, gonna be Clippers, gonna
(38:53):
be Rockets. But to see what the Thunder have done
with everything is a story that I just don't think
it's enough attention, right, No, no, it doesn't. And you know,
Billy Donovan is coming to this league from college and
he's been a stabilizing force. And yeah, you know, losing
a series you're up three one against the eventual champions
Golden State Wars, when you have to perennial UH All
(39:17):
Stars and two m vps on your team, Yeah, that
don't leave a lot of bad taste in people's mouths.
But in a in a in a division, and in
the conference like the West, and you can still find
yourself relevant after so much turnover and and so many
excellent pieces have been taken away and gone and you're
still right in the thick of things, and you look
(39:37):
what they've done that thirty two and twenty uh as
of now, depending on the outcome of this game we're
watching here. That's amazing. That that's that's that's amazing because
usually no matter how good a coach is, look at
look at the what you know San Antonio is going
through right right, is one of the greatest coaches ever
coached on any level. Um. But when you don't have
(39:59):
you know, when when you have, when you have that
talent that leaves, then you're kind of flilling a little
bit trying to figure out who you're gonna be. And
Chris Paul came right in and they just didn't They
didn't lose a step easy. From Salam, I'm Dan Bayer.
This is Fox Sports Sundays where Company Life from the
Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios. You can always listen to
the show live on the Fox on Fox Sports Radio
(40:20):
dot Com in the i Art radio app. If you
ever miss it, just go to Fox Sports Radio dot com,
click on podcasts and find it in Fox Sports Radio Weekends.
Coming up next he from and I will discuss the
launch of the XFL and what the really really big
main goal is that's coming up next year on Fox.
Keeping our eye on what's gonna be happening later on
in the NBA golf wrapping up at Pebble Beach, and
(40:42):
the first weekend on the XFL about to have a
bow put on. It wrapped up and yeah, just one
game remaining, Dallas lead St. Louis three. Nothing is neaor
David Gascon says they near halftime. That's where I want
to start. This is where company live for the Geico
Fox Sports Radio studios. Fifteen minutes could save more on
consurance physic I could account for a free rate quote.
(41:04):
There's excitements over the XFL, but I think along the
same lines, it's fair to say from that there are
just as many questions just because of not only of
the the track record of what happened with the XFL
the first time, but of what just happened a year
ago with the Alliance of American Football and when we
had Adam Kaplan on last are he said, a lot
(41:24):
of the NFL people and and talking to them about
this league feel it's more secure. It's on better footing
because of the people who are running it, because of
the time that was taken to run it. As a
former NFL player, when you see a league like the
XFL pop up, what are you looking for? What are
you taking from it? What are you trying to see
as the league unfolds. That's tough because number one, you
(41:47):
want to see if it's good football, right, so you
want to say if it's watchable football. And they've made
no short of of mentions of the majority of these
guys on the roster or have been on professional NFL teams.
So that's clearly the selling point when they're doing the broadcast,
(42:11):
because that's all you hear is that you know the
majority of these guys, these guys have been in locker rooms,
and this guy's had you know this many tackles in
the Super Bowl, and just letting people know that these
are guys who have NFL level talent. It's just not
enough spots for them, which is which is understandable. Um,
(42:34):
the football, I'm I've been watching all of the games,
and it's good football. It's it's not they're not shootouts
like they had had builded, and the games aren't as
short as they thought they would be with the accelerated
clock and shortened play clock. Football takes a while okay,
there's a lot of stoppages and and so on and
so forth, but it's serviceable. I look at at the
(42:57):
launch of the XFOL and there's excitement for it, but
you know, I've said all along, and I think it's
it's a fair point of that talk to me in
week five because there is the newness of it when
you also look at where we are on the sports
calendar of other sports, meaning the NFL has just ended,
college basketball is going on right now, but we're getting
(43:21):
close to March, so you're really kind of looking ahead
to March. The NBA almost hits the pause button with
All Star weekend, so there's not just there's there's not
a lot happening, So it provides a window for a
league like this to grab hold. What I want to
know then, is what happens when March madness comes along,
what happens when the NFL combine and free agency moving,
(43:42):
and what happens is we hit the stretch run heading
to the NBA Playoffs. Those are the questions that I
have for the XFL and if they are going to succeed,
I think this is what we're going to see you from.
And I just I don't think it's gonna be a surprise.
We're gonna see television ratings be a lot better than
people expected. They're gonna beat much basketball broadcaster, are gonna
beat NBA broadcasting. It's gonna be brought up on Monday
(44:04):
about the first week of the XFL, but I just
want to reserve my judgment until at least we get
to week five with how is this league going to succeed?
How is this league going to move on? I think
that's fair. It is fair, and the only way I
think for the long term that this league survives is
(44:24):
if the NFL itself comes out and champions it. It's
the only way this is gonna happen. Similar to what
the NBA did for the w n b A, right
w n b A when it started off, it was
you know, are we gonna the NBA came in and
(44:45):
made full machine. They just put the full machine and
gave it an opportunity to grow to what it is now.
And the NFL has had a farm system. Remember the
World League. The World League was around for quite at
some time, and the only reason that that worked was
it was a feeder system and a minor leagues for
(45:09):
football so a lot of people may not know that
there are ten players on each team on the practice squad,
which means they don't play in any games, They don't
dress for any games, they don't do any of that.
All they do is practice their practice team UH members.
And each team has ten spots on their roster for
(45:33):
those guys, So instead of fifty three, it's that's sixty
three people on a roster. But those ten guys can't
play in any games. Right There guys who are the third, fourth,
fifth wide out or are wide receiver, the guys who
are the third and fourth string running back are are linebacker.
(45:54):
Those guys who don't get a lot of playing time.
And what the World League did was at the end
of the NFL season, each team allocated. Each team was
aligned with the World League. So the Argonauts were for
the Jets. So anybody the Jets had that they wanted
to get more experience and and and playing time, they
(46:17):
would send them over to Germany. Right, I think this
is the only way that we really see the XFL
last is if those players on these teams. So each
NFL team, like the the Washington Defenders, the DC Defenders,
(46:39):
if they aligned with the Washington Redskins and they're able.
Just imagine if they were able to send uh Haskins
over and let him get some more reps. Are there
seventh round tackle who didn't do anything, he was on
the practice squad. You allowed him to go and you
(47:00):
play for the defenders and get that experience and then
come back to training camp and fight for a position.
It's why I actually think is you explain this whole
thing that the there are going to be stories this
player played in the XFL and then he made it
to the National Football League. But I think that those
with the current rosters that you have in the XFL
(47:22):
are few and far between, just like you would have
in the NBA's G League, which has expanded where each
team has a G League. Like realistically, if you're the
tenth guy on the G League team, you're not going
to the show. Like it's not, it's not going to happen.
If your top one or two you got your two
a deal, then that works out. I think that's a
lot of it with the XFL. When I think that
(47:43):
the XFL's legacy is going to end up being as
you said, it's not even. It's not even with the
NFL attaching and making it a minor league. But if
the NFL would just support it for innovations like we
have seen, and that's been one of the strong parts
of the XFL because the first time around is we're
so anti NFL because we're we're sex, drugs and rock
(48:05):
and roll. That was that was, you know, that was
that was the first time around. This is now, Okay,
we're gonna play within the NFL's rules, but we're gonna
try this different. You even said to me in the
break Love the kickoff, the gambling aspect that we see
on the graphics on on some of these games, the
the gambling aspects away from football, like we like the
(48:27):
partnership that was just released Full Disclosure with I Heart
Radio in the in the xf val that you're going
to see new ways in different ways to how the
NFL is gonna latch onto what the XFL did. That's
what's going to be the biggest legacy in all this,
whether at lasts one season, whether at last three season.
I just don't think that you're going to get a
(48:47):
fan base where a team is going to be that
squad in town. I just think at times people will
have too much football, and I think what is going
to take is all of these auxiliary things or these
extra things with the league. Yeah. I also like the
XFL's take on an extra point after a score. Uh,
there's no kicks. There are no field goals. Well, there
are field goals, but there's no extra point tries. With kicks,
(49:09):
you can either go for one, two are three points
and it's I believe what it's at the two yard
line for one, the five yard line for two points,
and then the ten yard line you can go for
three points. But what that does is it takes an
eighteen point game. It makes it a two possession game
instead of you know, you got Bill go, I mean
(49:31):
you got you got two touchdown and you gotta do that.
You have a way to come back from a deficit
if you put in the work faster. I like that
aspect of it. As you know, I have my ups
and downs with kickers, So putting the actual game in
the hands of the playmakers, I'm a I'm a fan
of that. Well. I laughed yesterday when Jim Zorn, the
(49:53):
head couch of the Seattle Dragon, scored a touchdown and
they went for one. And it's such a letdown because
you're like, no, go for you have no idea how
it's gonna play out. Just go for three. And I
was and it was like, already, not only that we are,
we are already criticizing a head coach in the XFL
(50:14):
for for what he's got. I just think, I think expectations.
You gotta have real expectations. I know people love football.
You love football. I love football. The guys across the
glass love football. But there is a limit there, There
is a limit to it. Heck, we saw a poll
of hey, some fans don't want a seven teen game
schedule in the NFL, which, by the way, I find absurd.
I don't know how one game would change a fan's opinion.
(50:36):
But realistically, when it gets into March and April, that's
gonna be the real test. And that's what I'm going
to see. I think the look of this is good.
I am Adam Kaplan brought up the point about tickets.
I think that is going to be an issue. I mean,
the the the New York team today played in MetLife Stadium.
You have the Dallas team playing and what is now
the old Rangers Park because they're getting a new park.
(50:56):
This year. But you have transformed that part where realistically
you're not using upper decks. You know you're gonna have
hopefully have about what people uh at best, which is good.
That's fine, that's a good game. That's more than the charges.
Let's oh jeez, that's rough. That's rough. Easy from Salam.
(51:19):
I'm Dan Buyer. This is Fox Sports Sunday. Come to
a live for the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios. Fifteen
minutes can save you fifteen to more on curR Insurance
physic Geico dot com for a free rate quote. Coming
up next, we put from to the test. How well
does he know the XFL. It's not as easy as
one three that next year on Fox Sports Sunday. Fox
(51:41):
Sports Sunday. Easy from Salam, I'm Dan Buyer. Oh you're
feeling it? Huh okay, So I will Sam killing it?
D J. I was Sam. Twitter is a buzz with
Sam's Sam's music selection. It is Fox Sports Sunday. By
the way, gratulations to Larry Fitzgerald another title for him
(52:04):
when the A T and T pubblic Beach pro Am
with Kevin Streelman today wrapping it up for Larry Fitzgerald,
who will be back for another season with the Arizona Cardinals.
From your high point total so far in our game
of easy As one to three and four is eight.
(52:24):
Maximum point total is ten today on a scale of
one to ten. How good do you feel about reaching
the maximum point total? I'm always gonna feel good. All right,
there is he's a ten. Are you ready to play
easy as one to three four? This is a game
(52:46):
where e From Salam will be tested with topics where
he just has to basically give me an answer from
a group of possible answers, name one of two, named
two of three, named three of four, and in fact
today a named four of eight. At the end of
the game, From gets a point for every correct answer
he gets. When he gets the question, he could decide
(53:07):
whether to use the help of today our executive producer
Ryan Burr, Singer our anchor David Gascott, or a technical
producer Sam Kinsley. Is you know him? Iowa Sam, and
they can help I From work out the question that
he may have troubles with. I From can also just
do it by himself and figure out the answers on
his own. But I would always suggest it's always good
to have a helping hand. Alrighty from are you ready
(53:28):
to play? Big news in college basketball yesterday is Bob
Knight made his return to Bloomington, Indiana, honoring the nineteen
eighty Indiana team, not a team that won the national championship,
but honoring the nineteen eighty Indiana Hoosiers. So for the
first time in twenty years, Bob Knight was back at
Assembly Hall. What I want to know from name one
of the two active college basketball coaches that have more
(53:52):
wins than Bobby Knights. There are only two coaches in
college basketball that are currently active that have more wins
than Bobby Knight. Name one of the two. Is that
men's and women It's just men's Okay, see that that
that right there that it was a trip up. You
tried to trip me up, right, there's a trip up.
That was my fault. I will take because that have
(54:14):
more wins than Bobby Night on the women's side. Just
f y, I yes, this is for men's Division one
college basketball. Two active coaches, Yeah, I just need one
of them that have more career wins than Bobby Knight.
I'm gonna wait a second, Okay, hold on, I'm gonna
(54:38):
say I'm gonna say, coach k that is correct. Mike
Showski is one of them. The other, despite being stripped
of more than a hundred victories for n C Double
A rules violations, Jim Beheim of Syracuses is the other.
(54:58):
So one point four e from often running on easy
as one. All right. This past week we had the
NBA All Star Draft from named two of the three
players who were the last three picks in the All
Star Game draft between Team y Honest and Team Lebron.
So the I need two of the three last three
(55:20):
picked in the draft, so they are all Stars. There
were three of the twenty four All Stars, but in
the draft order, who were the three last picks? I
just need two of them. Cannot look at the list
of of picks, or you could go to maybe some
of them. I'm just asking if if that's I just
don't want you to see the Okay, you can if
you needed to, if you needed to go, you can look.
(55:42):
I just don't want you to see the draft order.
So if you wanted to look, you are you are
more than more than welcome to do that. I always
Sam doesn't seem to be so confident I'm looking, Uh, Okay,
all right, come on, give me, give me up, okay, okay,
I can. I can help you with one. Kayan Burr
(56:04):
Singer is here, Okay. I remember the final pick was
Demonta Sabonis. Okay, so I can give you that one.
I'll take that, okay, Sis Sabonis. Alright, alright, see, I
need to look at the list of players. I don't
need I don't want to see the order, but I
need to look at the list of players. If that's okay, Yeah,
(56:27):
that's fine. Yeah, let's go ahead and do that. So
you're you're pretty all right. I have the list here,
feel pretty good. I have the list. Okay. Actually you're
looking at a list of the actual order that that
that I didn't look. Yeah, I didn't even pull it out.
I didn't even look yet. Here, I do want me
to give you some names. Just give me the name, okay.
Here are some names that that were drafted. Rudy Gobert,
bam at A Bio, Chris Middleton, Jimmy Butler, Donovan, Mitchell Brandon, Ingram,
(56:51):
Kyle Lowry, Demonta Sabonis, Chris Paul Jayson, Tatum, Ben Simmons,
Damian Lillard, Nicola Yokich and Russell west Alright, uh bamn
out of bayo. Okay, those are your two picks. You're
gonna go Sabonis in out of one. Out of two,
(57:12):
you got Sabonis correct. We would have taken Donovan Mitchell
or Russell Westbrook. Yes, they were two of the last
three picks. The last pick ended up being Donovan Mitchell Sabonis. Yes, Yes,
Donovan Mitchell was left to the end, so you got
one point there, all right? Named three of the four
(57:34):
players who have received NBA Player of the Month honors
so far. So we've had Player of the Month honors
for October, Slash, November four, December, East and West Conference,
Western Conference, and January, but only four players have won them.
I need to know three of those, alright. Number one
is Joannist Okay. Then I'm going to go with Anthony Davis. Okay,
(58:03):
and then I'm going to go with hold On. Let
me just let me, let me, let me. I am
going to go with Luca Dante. Alright. How many did
you get? Right? Two? You got? You got Janice correct, who,
(58:29):
by the way, is one every month in the East
so far. You got Luka correct. Anthony Davis was incorrect,
won it in January, James Harden I was trying to
I was picking, I was I knew it was a laker.
He wasn't quite sure what we landed. Alright, you got,
you got two points on that one. You got Janice
(58:50):
and Luca. All right, your final to match your high score,
you gotta get all four of these named four of
the excep of the eight x Fell team nicknames. Uh
the Renegades, the Defenders, the Vipers, the Roughnecks. All right,
(59:13):
let's hear it there, good job, can you can you
can you rattle off the other ones? Um? You got Defenders, Vipers, Roughnecks,
and Renegades. There are the uh no, no, I can't,
(59:37):
I don't know. No, that's it. The guys, Sam Dave,
what do you guys got? You got the l A
Wildcats of course, of course, of course our Wildcats. Um,
the battle Hawks, right, they're actually playing right now. Luckily
for me, they're at halftime and at commercial so you
couldn't see battle Hawks. The battle Hawks are playing right now. St. Louis.
(59:59):
That's what we were watch. Sorry, don't forget the Seattle Dragons.
The Dragons and the Guardians. The Guardians, I thought is Okay.
When I think of guardians, I don't think like protector
of city. I think parents or guardians signs here, I
think supervisor. Yes do you fit into this? Yes? Right,
(01:00:24):
the Seattle chef. That would be great. Uh, he'sy from Salam.
I'm Dan Buyer. Eight points today E from good job.
You only missed out on the one last All Star
pick and the Player of the month. It is the
Player of the month. Thing is He's a bit surprising
because you would have thought that maybe Anthony Davis. But
(01:00:45):
there was also the point of Lebron ends up winning it.
This after Damian Lillard has been on his unbelievable tear.
What he's been doing is out of control, but it's
been it has been absurd. I want to dive more
into this and see who the real m v P is.
Halfway through the NBA season so far, heasy from Salama.
I'm Dan Buyer. We are company Alive from the Geico
Fox Sports Radio studios. Here on Fox Sports Sunday, we'll
(01:01:08):
dive into the m v P conversation after David Gascon
gives us the latest of what is happening right now
in the world of sports. Some baseball, some hoops and
uh and whatnot. I I will admit that I'm watching
the Kings and Rangers right now. Alright, some hockey. I
thought Jonathan Quick just tour both of his grinds. He
did the splits and made an incredible save. Um, guys
(01:01:30):
will start off. Since you guys were mentioned the NBA
and the Lakers in particular, Adrian ward ron Owski just
tweeted out that veteran guard Darren Collinson is not returning
back to the league. He's staying retired. So no Lakers
for him, no Clippers for him. Is a spectator for now,
so everyone was kind of vying for his services, but
it's a no go for him all the way across
the board. Uh NBA scene right now as it stands,
(01:01:53):
one game as Alorady in the books Boston they wanted,
okay see one twelve to one eleven. Jason Tatum had
twenty six points eleven rebounds in the victory Nick's by
ten in Atlanta seventies six Series one over the Chicago Bulls.
Letter and today Clippers and Cavaliers no Kawhi Leonard load management. Also,
Patrick Beverley is out with a sword groin Major League
(01:02:13):
Baseball scene today. Dodgers get their man. It's Mookie Bets
is coming their way. It is official now, so Bets
comes to l A along with David Price. Boston will
pay half of the salary, which is nineties six million dollars.
Alex Verdugo goes down the other way, so he's heading
to the East Coast. College basketball today. Only two games
the top twenty five, number twenty five, Houston one big
(01:02:33):
over Wichita State winning it by twenty three three excuse
me bad math Marquette dropping number nineteen, Butler seventy six
to fifty seven. And of course, as you guys have mentioned,
a couple of games in the XFL. New York Guardians
beat the Tampa Bay Vipers twenty three to three. Another
game it's underway right now as well. Dallas and St.
Louis ball game right now, six to three ball games
(01:02:56):
at the half, gentlemen, back to you, thank you very much.
David is Fox Sports Sunday Easy from Salam, I'm Dan Buyer.
Dave started out with that Darren Collison news he's a
Lakers fan. Yeah that that hurt me a little bit.
We need another point guard. But Dave, let me let
me ask you something. Um, I didn't get this, maybe
dozed off in the middle of the update. Uh, but
(01:03:18):
what is the only undefeated, only undefeated college basketball seventy
four or about a hundred ASTEC fans right behind me
having themselves a party and going out tonight because this
game is over here at the corn Arena at the
Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Ted Lightner on
(01:03:39):
the call, Santego State Aztecs Radio network. So that must
be the four. So is they losing the Sweet six team?
Is it a successful season? No? No, you start if
if they end up winning out and they're undefeated going
(01:03:59):
into the tournament, it's championship or bust. That's I mean you,
that's what going into the It's only happened one time,
the nineteen seventies six Housers Indiana the only undefeated team
to go all the way and win the national championship.
So you've shown that you can win on the road,
(01:04:19):
you can win tough games, blowouts, you're battle tested, and
so now you gotta win the champions So for a
team that in my recent history, that has never advanced
past the Sweet sixteen, getting to a Final four is
not a successful season. It's a successful season, but it's
not the season that you hang your hat on, right,
(01:04:42):
Like it's it's a successful season, right getting to the
Sweet six team, it's successful, But you want to win
it all. You want to have an opportunity to win
the national championship. So you're not you're not. We're not
looking at the Sweet sixteen as the benchmark. Are the
elite eight? Are the final four? Right? You? Of course
you hang your hat on. We went to the final four?
(01:05:03):
Are the national championship game? That's a huge accomplishment, But
it's championship. But I get I get, I get all
that in the in as you're doing it. But one
of the unique things I think about the Final four,
and because I don't think you have this for the
college football playoff, and I don't think that you have
(01:05:24):
it for the Super Bowl, and you don't have it
for the World Series, but the Final four is, in
my mind, really the only sporting event that you feel
satisfied even though you don't leave the winner. Like in
college football. You have now a final four. But I'm
sorry the teams that lost in the semifinals aren't sitting
there saying hey at least we made the playoff, but
(01:05:45):
the final four, you say final four, we got to
cut down the nets. Look, I've got a T shirt
that says final four on it. We had a week
of celebrating, we got to play the middle of a
stadium and our fans like there is a built in
reward with being a Final four contender. But I do
find it interesting that it is championship or bust. And
(01:06:09):
I get being in there, but I do think that
looking back on the season, even though when you're undefeated,
if you don't get it done, but you make it
to the Final four, I would be like, man, that
was the final four running. Yeah, I wish we would
have won the title were the Aztecs. But to get
to a Final four first in school history be huge.
It'd be huge. It'd be huge for the little guys, right,
(01:06:30):
That's what we're always talking about mid majors and and
you know, going up against the Power six and and
and in college basketball, Power five and in football, this
will be great. This is like you can when yukon one, right,
you know what I mean, This is on that level
for us. But but but I mean, and I would
put you, I would put you kind ahead of San
(01:06:52):
Diego State. But I would put San Diego State ahead
of like a George Mason that made it about fourteen
years ago. I would put San Diego State to have
ahead of a VCU that ended up making a run
ten years ago for what that program is. I you know,
to see what Butler's turned into in college basketball and
to see just because of the program that they ran.
(01:07:14):
I think to think that Butler completely sidetracking us on
a on a dirt road as we were traveling along
the highway. To think that Butler made it too back
to back title games is like one of the most
amazing things in college basketball. But to your ploint, I mean,
I think that Butler even looks back at that and says,
(01:07:34):
we made it to back to back title games and
we're So that's my point about the San Diego State thing. Like,
I know your eyes on the prize. I know you're
focusing on on what is ahead and the next game
and being twenty five and oh and running the table
and winning the Mountain West Conference Tournament and getting that
number one seed. But realistically, if you were say thirty
(01:07:55):
three and one and you made it to the final four,
I don't know how different your season would be if
you were thirty three and old and lost in the
final four. Like, I still think it's I understand what
you're saying, so and you're right, And the biggest thing
it does is help with recruiting, right, So now you see,
(01:08:17):
you know, you can go to those you know, five
star recruits and those blue chip players and you can
be like, hey, well there's an avenue for us to
have national attention. Right, we'll be able to play at
a high level against the best competition. That's what these
kids want. And you look at what San Diego State
(01:08:39):
has put together with a lot of you know, Yannice, Uh,
what's so, Yanni? What's so? Is A is a as
a graduate transfer? And you look at Malachi Flynn who
came from Washington State, and then you look um at
you know a lot of these players that transferred. So
we have an older group right who came and they
(01:09:00):
had a lot of practice time together last year prior
to be prior to being able to play this year.
And that's what makes them a scary team because it's
just not a bunch of young kids out there. These
guys have played at a high level. Fund was a
Freshman of the Year in the Pac twelve A. Right,
he was averaging sixteen points a game. You know that
(01:09:24):
that's the that's the nature of of of what San
Diego State is building down there. You recruit these kids
coming out and they go to these big time universities,
And Steve Fisher started this. He always would say, hey,
if it doesn't work out for you, we're here, right.
So these kids go and they get disenfranchise, or are
(01:09:45):
they get home sick or it's just not going the
way they want? Are the coach transfers the coach that
recruited them, and then they find themselves reaching out to
a top tier program like San Diego State and then
getting an opportunity to shine on a big stage. If
when the one in done rule ends up going by
the wayside, I am. I think it's going to I
(01:10:05):
think it will be interesting to see because I don't
know on on how things are going to move in
college basketball. Where are the rich going to be getting
kids that may have gone to San Diego State because
now there's no longer guys no longer being disenfranchised because
there isn't a freshman that came in that was only
gonna be there for five months that you know it
(01:10:27):
was going to go to the NBA. But maybe this
guy doesn't like seeing it, or he doesn't get the
minutes because this guy's on his pit stop on the
way to the NBA. I think that could change stuff.
Kauai by the way, like in leading them to the
Sweet sixth team that he did in inn and I
know that's it's not the only season, but I do
also think it really does help when you can have
(01:10:49):
in a lum like that, whether you know, whether it
was a time when maybe the program wasn't as markey
as it as it has grown to. Right now we're
getting to that of being fourth. I mean I remember
that regional, that Sweet sixteen when they played Arizona. I
mean it was it was it was actually it wasn't
Arizona against you because Arizona Duke were after but I
(01:11:11):
mean half of the arena was San Diego State fans.
It was. But if you watch the game, which I'm
sure you didn't last night in uh Colorado Spring, it
was packed with Aztec fat Like that's a that's a thing.
That's the thing I love about the Aztecs. And I
(01:11:31):
don't know if you've ever gone to UH an actual
game at San Diego State Via House Arena, it is ruckus, brother,
it is a it's it's one of the best UH
student sections and in fan bases down there, it's it's
it's impressive. I'm telling you you we should do that.
(01:11:51):
I'll take you down there, man, Okay, I'll take it
down here. I love college basketball. I went to I
went to a North Carolina game last year just to
go because I wanted to see what it was like
at the Dean Dome. We're playing golf in the area.
I'm like, all right, Duke would have been in town.
We would have probably tried to gone to Duke, but
wouldn't have happened. But yeah, we went and saw that,
you know, the Tar Hills. Yeah, so I'm all for that.
(01:12:11):
Easy from Salama, I'm Dan Buyer. I mentioned Kauai and
his role that he could play. Kauai's role in the
m v P race. Is it there? Is it not there?
We'll talk about that next. Easy from Salama. I'm Dan Buyer.
Were company alive here from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios.
It's easy to say more on our insurance with Geiko
go to Geikua comer call eight hundred nine for seven Otto.
(01:12:33):
The only hard part figuring out which way is easier
is Kauai in the m v P race. And I'll
tell you who the real m VP is next here
on Fox Sports Sunday, Fox Sports Sunday Easy from Salam,
I'm Dan Buyer. NBA All Star Weekend will be uh
coming up next weekend, So the NBA reps up its
first part of the schedule. I was gonna say it's
first half, but that's not appropriate because we're like fifty
(01:12:55):
five games into the eighty two games season and that's
what you got in the NBA. So next week it's
the All Star Game Team You Honest against Team Lebron.
I say right now that I think there are five
m VP candidates in the NBA. I would actually trim
it down to three guys that I think are going
to be the real finalists for this. But I have
(01:13:16):
five guys in the NBA that I think have a
legitimate shot at winning the m v P. I want
to tell you who they are, and I'm curious on
your thoughts. I think Janice into the Compo of the Bucks,
James Harden of the Rockets, Luca don Chech of the Mavericks,
Damian Lillard of the Blazers, and Lebron James of the Lakers.
(01:13:41):
Your thoughts on those five of the five guys having
a legitimate chance at winning the m v P this season.
I like those. I like four of the five. Which
one don't you like? I don't like the James Harden.
Why is that? I'm not a fan of the way
James Harden plays. I don't think um. I don't think
(01:14:05):
James Hardened is worthy of When I think m v P,
I think someone who uh exemplifies effort on not just
scoring but what they mean to the team into the
(01:14:25):
league right. I like a guy to play, or be
able to or try to play both ends of the
court for me personally, Like we know Janice plays both
ends of the court. As good a score as Kevin
Durant was when he won m VP. He would play
both ends of the court. Lebron James plays both friends
(01:14:49):
of the court. Luca not so much. He grew up
playing basketball where they didn't really play defense, so I
get it. He's still a transcending, heam oriented player. I
like him. I like his skill set, especially at twenty
years old. For James Harden, watching him play defense is painful,
watching him ball dominate, it's painful. Like I just I
(01:15:14):
can't get behind. It's not fun to watch. It's not
great basket that shouldn't be held against him, but it
is held against him because he has the ability to
number one give effort on the defensive end. I'm talking
about I've seen James Harden move out of the way
like that. I can't I can't get behind. I can't
(01:15:34):
respect it. Yeah, he can score with the best scores
to ever play in the history of the game. I
get it. That's that's crazy, it's amazing. But is that
m v P worthy? There's teams in one of the
top four teams in the Western is it the m
v P worthy? Though I think that he I think yeah.
I mean, I just think with his skill set and
(01:15:56):
I there there's a difference. And I think of what
you're saying is there's a difference between not being able
to play defense and not wanting to play defense. That's
the complete difference. Is that, because yes, he he can't
be saying Damian Lillard is a stopper. No, but he
plays defense. Though you can watch him on the ball
(01:16:17):
at the top of the key play defense. You can
watch James Harden stand there and watch someone drive by him.
You can watch. I mean, it happens every game. If
you just watch him, you'd be like, wow. He I mean,
if you put James Harden in a high pick and
roll guard to guard, I'm not even talking big to
(01:16:37):
little about guard to guard. The guard who has the
ball is going at James hard. And you know why,
because they know it's gonna be a little resistance. He's
going to give you all he has on the offensive side,
which leaves nothing on the defensive side. He has a
way during the course of the game to conserve his
energy for one half of the court. Can't respect that
(01:17:00):
as a true basketball fan growing up in the error
where the m v P was also First Team All Defense,
and that that was Michael Jordan's uh Shaquille O'Neil. Obviously
when he's winning. Kobe Bryant, like all of these guys
and Lebron James, I can respect that because they bring
an aspect to the team that it's dominant, not just scoring,
(01:17:24):
but they set the defensive tempo of who you are
and what your team is about. I think in the
overall aspect, when you're looking at M v P, you
put James Harden in the conversation and you can use
that argument against him. I don't think that it should
be the reason that he should be kept out of
the conversation. Well, no, he should get some votes, right.
I mean the biggest travesty that the league did was
(01:17:45):
give uh Steve Nash back to back m v and
Kobe Bryant was saying, I was like, are you kidding me?
Kobe Brown was averaging thirty three points a game, first
team all defense, you give it to Steve Nash like that?
That is a That is a travis that I will
never forget that. Steph Curry. Uh, A lot of people
would say that his defense and I'm using air quotes
(01:18:07):
were on steels where it's basically you're risking being out
of position. So you forget the stat that that was
the argument. I mean, that's he has physical limitations, Steph Curry. Right,
I mean if you put him in a big, little
uh high picking roll, he has limitations there, right, So
I get that, but that didn't stop the effort. Though.
My whole thing is effort. Have you ever watched the
(01:18:31):
basketball game and in the NBA and seeing a guy.
I've just watched a guy on defense not move his feet. Ever,
his man that he's guarding runs behind him or in
front of him, catches a lob and he just goes
down on like that's the type of effort I'm talking about.
(01:18:52):
And I can't sit up here, as a huge fan
of the n b A and be like, oh, James
Harden is the best play because the m v P,
to me is the best player in the league. I
can't do that because it's not true. It's and and
the reason I brought up those five guys, and Anthony
Davis didn't make my top five. Actually think Lebron would
if you were to have a vote. Actually think Lebron
(01:19:14):
is more valuable than Anthony Davis is to that Lakers team.
But it's also another point of of Damian Lillard's been
on a great tear, but the Blazers are still sitting
there on the outside looking in the Western Conference. So
when you're looking at how to you know, nitpick and
all of this. We penalized Russell Westbrook for winning an
m v P when he had a trouble double season,
(01:19:34):
and then he did it again, We're like, okay, big deal, right,
that's what you do or you're allowed to get the rebound.
So then James Harden wins. So then James Harden gets
the m v P and we see him do the
same thing the next year and he doesn't win it
and Janice wins. Like we get old, we get old quickly,
we get we get sick of versions quickly. I don't
think we are getting sick of what Janice is doing.
(01:19:57):
And that's why I think that he will end up
winning back to back m v P. So the best
team in the league. When you look at the other
candidates I brought up, he Chris Middleton's an All Star,
but he's still kind of a one man gang with
who they have on their team. They've got a lot
of good players around him, but there's not that superstar
next to next to him. He's on track right now
to go back to back. Yeah, I agree with that.
(01:20:19):
I'll see that. I love what he brings to the game.
He'sy from Salam, I'm dan buyer e from his never
not tried on defense. You may beat him to the whole,
but it doesn't mean he wasn't trying recompany a lot
from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios, Getty from on Twitter,
Iridie from Salam I'm at Dan Buyer on Fox. Could
there be a shake up at the top of the
NFL draft. Maybe we'll talk about it next keeping our
(01:20:42):
eye on the NBA and the XFL going on right now.
It's also Oscar's night. Yeah, we'll have that. I'll have
from being able to weigh in on what's gonna happen
at the end of UH at the end of our show,
he'll predict what's gonna happen tonight, or at least give
us the heads up with what he liked and what
we can look forward to. All that and more. We
also can look forward to an NFL draft from that now.
(01:21:03):
With the NFL season over, football fans going to mock drafts.
I saw a lot of NFL mock draft pohs this
week with the mock draft predictions of what we're gonna
get coming up in two and a half months in
Las Vegas. Do you want to bring up one point though?
What is interesting about the XFL is it is wrapping
(01:21:24):
up its first week of the XFL relaunch. If you
will some what almost twenty years later. Is there's always
reminders that this is still football and when you see
plays we were raving earlier about the new kickoff rules
and how that's something maybe the NFL can take. We'll
see how the NFL works with betting. But there is
(01:21:47):
also a player that just snapped his leg a little
bit earlier that needed to be carded off. And when
you the average salary what of guys in the XFL
around fifty grands? That yeah, that's the like, there's a
realization of what football is and you can you can
make the kickoff safer, you can try to limit concussions
(01:22:08):
as much as you can. But there's also now a
guy who just snapped his leg and is going to
go through rehab and who knows what his NFL future
will be or his football future will be, but he's
not gonna have an opportunity to showcase in the XFL.
You know, all four grand if that I really want
to know what the healthcare You know, the coverage is
(01:22:29):
in if you do snap your neg your your leg,
what you know? Alright, what's what's going on? There? Are
are are the players covered? And listen, life, the same
exact risks are in college football in Division two, in
n ai A, Division three, of of the FCS like those,
(01:22:53):
those risks are all there, so that doesn't change, but
it also just makes you realize. So yeah, for as
great as everything is, we we hope that some of
these players can realize their NFL dreams. Again, we just
saw Marquette Gang used to punt in the NFL is
punting for the Seattle battle Hawks or for the St.
Louis battle Hawks, excuse me. And there are some names
(01:23:15):
that you'll recognize, but then there are also guys who
are just trying to figure out, all right, is this
my last shot at doing it? Is this my last
shot at trying to play professional football and getting an opportunity,
And you'll have those stories as well. I just just
thought it was it was an interesting moment because you
look at the stands, you look at the uniforms, you
look at the new rules, and maybe you can be
blinded in Week one, but there's a lot of reality
(01:23:37):
behind all of that as well, not that they're trying
to hide it, but at the core of it, football
is still football. Yeah, you still practice and you still
play these games at a high level, and this seems
like a lot of it is do you like seeing
I mean, I would assume that you like seeing guys
getting another opportunity to get paid for playing. Do would
(01:24:00):
you can go be a teacher? So you know, sure,
Coach Joe Burrow is not gonna make fifty grand. He's
gonna make a lot more than that, and he's likely
to be the first overall pick in the NFL draft.
But over the last couple of weeks, the Gerald Joe
Burrow to Cincinnati narrative has taken a few turns here
and there. I from There was a comment now Joe
(01:24:23):
Burrows working out with Jordan Palmer's the brother of Carson Palmer,
and Pro Football Talk dot Com made note that Carson
Palmer on the Dan Patrick Show heard here on Fox
Sports Radio, mentioned that the Cincinnati Bengals aren't in it
to win Super Bowls, that they aren't a franchise that's
competing for Super Bowls. When Joe burrows dad was asked
about maybe the Miami Dolphins trading up to get a
(01:24:46):
first round pick or to trade up to get the
first overall pick, there wasn't a no, we want to
be in Cincinnati. There's it's more of a general answer,
they're not shooting down the thoughts that maybe the Dolphins
would want to trade up. When the question was asked
to Joe Burrow, I believe it was on the Dan
Patrick Show about do you want to be the first
overall pick? Do you want to, you know, go to Cincinnati?
(01:25:07):
What is the what is the main goal? That wasn't
like I want to be a Bengal. It's it's more
of a broad topic. So now with the Dolphins coming
in and reports saying Stephen Ross is willing to give
up a lot to get to that first overall selection.
If you are Joe Burrow and you're a quarterback and
(01:25:29):
you're about to be the first overall pick, do you
start to play hardball with the Cincinnati Bengals through this
draft process and maybe trying to dictate where you're going
to go as a former player, kind of like Eli
Manning did with the Chargers and ended up finding his
way to the Giants, Joe Burrow take that same route
and play hardball with the Cincinnati Bengals. No, I don't.
(01:25:51):
I don't like that. I don't like that because, um,
I think the teams that need the most help have
earned the right to get the most help and earned
the right to pick the player that they think they
can help their organization. That may not be true or whatever,
but I think the system is put in place is
(01:26:11):
not a lottery. It's you know, team with the worst
record gets the first pick in the draft. Cincinnati Bengals
obviously need a quarterback. If Joe Borrows, it's a guy
who's first on their board, then hardball or not. I
I you know, you get drafted into a situation and
you gotta make that situation better. What I find interesting
(01:26:35):
is that there are questions about how the Dolphins are
even as an organization. And we we saw how they
and I don't want to say tanked last year, but
prior to the season they traded Laramie Tunzil to the
Houston Texans. There was uh talk of Clowney maybe going there,
and and that it doesn't end up in the Dolphins
don't get anybody in return, they get end up getting
(01:26:57):
draft picks. They traded Kenny Stills as part of that deal.
They also uh than ship Manca Fitzpatrick to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
You're thinking, okay, they're they're taking but then they end
up heavy a year at the end of the year
where they bounce back and Ryan Fitzpatrick is a story
they knock off New England. So maybe things are trending
right with the Miami Dolphins. But he from like when
I look at the Bengals and I look at the Dolphins,
(01:27:19):
as crazy as it is, I know that there's this
Bengal mentality. But I'm not sure on how much better
Miami is than Cincinnati. And I'm not sure on these
situations when you have Zach Taylor, somebody who could work
with the quarterback, and you would obviously have Joe mix
and be there, you would have uh Tyler Boyd being
a wide receiver that you could have in Cincinnati. I'm
(01:27:39):
not necessarily sure that Miami is even a better spot
than Cincinnati. Wouldn't know, But I tell you what, Miami
plays hard. Yeah they do. They play hard. Ryan Fitzpatrick
came in there and uh he just those guys. You
look at where they were at the beginning of the
year getting throttled fifty nine, given up fifty nine points
to him, forty three, then thirty one and thirty. Then
(01:28:03):
they got a little stingy, given up seventeen. Right then
they started playing a little harder, playing a little harder,
and then before you knew it, they end the season
upsetting the Patriots in New England. All right, a game
the Patriots needed to win. Um I just like the
(01:28:23):
way those guys were counted out, played hard and now
if you add some pieces. They got a bunch of
draft picks. Right, what are they gonna want to do
in free agency? It's Miami? How do you not want
to go live in Miami? Right? So if they can
do the right thing in the draft, right, if they
do get a young quarterback and someone like a Ryan
(01:28:47):
Fitzpatrick is still there and he can help what he's
shown he is willing to do. Hope this young quarterback?
Uh in this system? I mean, look, one year can
make a difference. We'll look at a couple of years ago.
The Colts were a rebuilding team when Peyton Manning got hurt,
(01:29:08):
and then they looked up and got Andrew Luck. Uh,
and they want eleven and five like things like this happened.
It's what what are you willing to do as an organization?
Number One? You gotta find your quarterback, right, That's what
the league has transformed into. You gotta find your quarterback, uh,
(01:29:28):
and you gotta build around him. You gotta get some
pieces of guys who want to be selfless in play,
and they got a nice nucleus of young players who
don't know anything but to play hard. In the grand
scheme of things, it's always both Jackson's career, John always career,
Eli Manning's career. Guys who were first overall picks that
(01:29:50):
didn't want to go to the team that was originally
drafting him. Those notes always stay with them. I don't
think that they're looked upon as negatively a as they
do in the moment where it sounds as we're discussing
like Joe Burrow may not want to go to Cincinnati,
You're like, oh my goodness. But they do stick with you,
and they are brought up. Heck, Eli retires a couple
(01:30:11):
of weeks ago, and we're still talking about him not
wanting to go to San Diego. So it does stick
with you. John always been retired for how long and
we still say he was gonna threaten to play baseball
instead of going to the Baltimore Colts. So you have
all of that there. This will stick with Joe Burrow.
I just look at the Cincinnati Bengals, and and I
know what Carson Palmer said, but their situation to me,
(01:30:33):
seems perfect for Joe Burrow, the Ohio kid. I mentioned
the the personnel that you have weapons wise, you also
had a first round pick that didn't play at all
last year, and Jonah Williams as a tackle. Your head
coach is a quarterbacks coach at heart, and Zach Taylor,
so you have that. So it's just it's to me,
it seems like it fits in. You know, the the
Dolphins did beat the New England Patriots in weeks seventeen
(01:30:55):
and things were great. However, I just don't think one
game at the end of the season should change a
narrative or change the decision for Joe Burrow. You could
be a star in Cincinnati, just like you could be
a star in Miami and the NFL. It doesn't matter.
I think that Joe Burrow should stay and want to
play in Cincinnati. I agree with that, And um, you know,
I can't wait to see this thing thing shakes out.
(01:31:17):
He is a young talent, and you mess around and
and Cincinnati takes somebody else with the front ship keep playing.
If you want to write, I mean and that that
could behave, that could be the wish that maybe Joe
Burrow and the and his crew and want. But what
what you can do is you find yourself in a
(01:31:37):
worse situation. Sure, right, So when you're looking at that
draft order and you you're trying to dictate what you
want to happen based on what you think or what
your father thinks, then you can find yourself in in
in the world of of of hurt. And they didn't
say anything, They didn't say anything awful. They just didn't
(01:32:01):
deny anything of it. It was just like when when
asked about a question of of the scenario when you know,
when you're you find yourself going at three to Detroit,
I promise your brother that and what you want in
your life, I can tell you that you don't you
don't want those problems. The the the quote from Jimmy Burrow,
(01:32:24):
Joe's dad, when talking about whether Joe Burrow wants to
play for the Bengals or not, saying quote not sure
where that information is coming from. We're all excited that
Joe has put himself in a position to be considered
as a possible high draft choice. It starts off maybe
not being neutral like Switzerland. But it turns that way.
None of it is shot down, none of it is
(01:32:45):
really addressed, and that I think is is worth watching.
By the way, I think Joe Burrow is going to
be a great NFL quarterback. He is. From Salam, I'm

Eddie from Salam, I'm at Dan Buyer. On Fox we
(01:33:29):
did have a tweet come in when we were talking
NBA uh Nick tweets in saying no mention of Nicola
yok yokich as the m v P, and he said,
come on, guys, you need to tune into Denver. But
nobody's tuning into Denver. That's that's the point. And Denver
is having phenomenal They've been having a phenomenal in the
last three years, but they always fly under the radar,
(01:33:53):
and mostly because the time they need to shine is
in the playoffs and they just don't do it. They
had last year like they were, they were knocking on
the door for the last couple of years and then
finally last year they break through with a vengeance because
they get the two seed. Then they just end up
losing to Portland in the Western Conference semifinal. So I
still think that they're early on in their track. But
(01:34:14):
I also think when you look at realistic opportunities to
win an m v P, there are guys like Damian
Lillards had a great year for the Portland Trailblazers who
have been out of the playoff hunt. But Damian Lillards,
like last three weeks, have been on worldly. So he's
starting to play himself in You may have you know
(01:34:35):
joke as a guy who was higher on your rankings
than Lillard right now, But the ability for Lillard to
play himself into the conversation is the conversation that we
are having, and we know now that the m v
P thing has shifted. If you don't have the ball
in your hands the majority of the time, it's hard
(01:34:56):
for you to get recognized as an m v P.
I'll get kid, he's Joe. Joe the joker is a
big right. Someone has to bring him the ball. Sure,
so you did. No matter what he's doing with it,
you get lost up and you know, you get you
get lost in the ball dominant players, which the league
(01:35:18):
is about now. And I think that when you when
you look at at where guys rank in points per
game is a big deal. Uh. That's why the the
the m v P candidates that you usually see her
in the top five or at least the top ten. Uh,
that's not where he is right now rebounding stats. When
(01:35:39):
you see guys who or assist stats. If we're talking
about a guy like Lebron, Anthony Davis didn't make my
conversation for the simple fact of I think when you
consider Anthony Davis his m VP candidates, you have there,
you know, credentials is the word I was looking for
when you look at that you have to bring Lebron's
(01:36:00):
aimes into the conversation of how much better the Lakers are, Like,
the Lakers are a better team than they were a
year ago when they didn't have Anthony Tavis, but you
still have freaking Lebron James. And you see what Lebron
James is doing in leading the NBA, and it'sist. And
if you were to take out Lebron, how good really
(01:36:20):
are the Lakers? And so that's what I think ends
up hurting Anthony Davis in that conversation. So that's the
point of it all of realistically, how many guys have
a legitimate shot with twenty five to thirty games left
of winning an m v P And I think there
are about five guys right now. In a little bit,
we'll be checking in with our good buddy, Kurt Healing,
of the lead NBA writer NBC Sports dot Com at
(01:36:43):
Basketball Talk. In fact, curtis here right now, and I'll
pose the question that I from and I were just discussing, Kurt,
and I'll fill you in because I know you were
talking to our producer Ryan. We talked earlier on the show,
Kurt about the number of guys that have a legitimate
shot at winning the m v P. Not you know,
are they a worthy m VP candidates, but guys that
(01:37:04):
legitimately have a shot at winning. I named five names
from like four of them. He didn't like James Harden,
but I put Lillard in there, I put Janice in there,
I put Luca in there, and I put Lebron James
in there. Is there anybody that we are missing as
a part of a legitimate shot at being the league's
Most Valuable player at winning it or just being on
the ballot winning it? Yeah, then you've covered it. Is okay, Honestly,
(01:37:28):
that's what I thought. That race is really almost coming
down to it. I think it's going to ultimately be
because Harden's faded a little um. It's coming down to
did you have Lebron on there? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, I
would say yea. Lebron and Janice are your front runners. Hardened, Lillard,
Luca are kind of that next year. And I think Hardened,
(01:37:49):
like I said, he was there earlier, he faded a
little bit. Um. And then you get into Anthony Davis
and Jimmy Butler are battling for spots on the on
the ballot, but I I don't think any of them
could either of them could win it. Yeah, what do
you think about the way this new All Star format
is uh can even finish? You is sticking up? Please
(01:38:11):
shed some light on this for us. Look, here's the
thing the innertew Look, it's a showcase, right, it's a
it's an exhibition, and all the star power is out
there and we get to see the dunks in the
athleticism and that kind of you know, they all star
Saturday Sun and what have you. The game itself, guys,
is boring, isn't it. It's just dreadful. Like the game itself,
(01:38:35):
it's it's just there's not a lot of competition. I
think there's like all All Star games stuffer suffer from
this a little bit. Guys. You're trying to not get injured,
you know, it's kind of you know, but it's not
like a lot of guys in the NHL are playing
defense during the All Star Game. But what's you know,
the scores at nineteen or something. Um, So the game
itself is pretty tedious. So this idea of look, at
(01:38:59):
this point, I'm kind of open anything that shakes it up.
I guess like the idea of playing each quarter at
zero and then putting this what what would you'd call
it an elam ending where they're just you know, putting
a target score up there. It's hey, it's going to
shorten the game. Be, which I'm all for because you know,
again it's an exhibition and be why not? Like I
just I don't know that it's going to be Maybe
(01:39:20):
it's good. I think good luck broadcasting this is trying
to explain it. I can't imagine how hard that will be.
But you know, at the end of the day, who cares?
Like it's an exhibition? Yeah, and that's what it is.
They should just give him the week off and just
have the parties just call it party weekend in the NBA.
And I think you're good pretty much pretty much all
that goes on anyway. That's what you know'st not to
(01:39:42):
suggest that many of those players would be playing through
a hangover, but maybe it's possible that. Uh. Curt hell
And joining us here on Fox Sports Radio. Heasy from Salam.
I'm Dan Buyer. It's Fox Sports Sunday. Find Kurt on
Twitter at Basketball Talk Is. He's the lead NBA writer
and managing editor at NBC Sports dot Com. So when
the news comes down that Darren Collison is going to
stay retired today, how did the Lakers, I guess, rebound
(01:40:05):
from that news. Yeah, that one's kind of a blow.
I think that they especially after not getting you know,
just not being able to make a trade at the deadline,
and that's just because they didn't have they that they
was weren't set up to make a good trade at
the deadline and they the only piece they had that
a player, and they had that everybody really wanted was
Kyle Kuzma. He makes two million dollars and now you've
got to package other guys and it just, you know,
(01:40:27):
it gets awkward if you're trying to get into Marcus
Morris conversation, even if you were putting together your ideal package,
if you're the Lakers and it's you know, Kuzma, Bradley
Beal and and the you know, unfortunately for him debt
contract at this point of of DeMarcus Cousins is no
Kuzma and no bial for Morris. No, I mean no
Bradley Beal, you know, not Bradley bal No Avery, Bradley,
(01:40:49):
are you really better? Like they just didn't have the
pieces to make a good deal. But this was how
they were going to get around it. Collinson was going
to come back and be an upgrade for them, and
now he's not. And you know, they'll they'll get some
they'll look at the buyout market and you know, um,
somebody like Wayne Ellington could be out there and some
other guys who could help them eat some minutes down
the stretch. But I don't know that there's anybody else
(01:41:12):
who moved the needle for them. Basically, they're gonna they're
gonna go into the They're gonna go into the postseason
with this roster and we'll see if that's good enough
against I mean, they could win at all because they
got that Lebron guy and Anthony Davis, but it's a
much harder path. The Clippers got better, um, you know,
even Utah and Denver got a little better, you know,
(01:41:32):
around the deadline. And then the Bucks are really good guys,
they are the Bucks are really good, and they're dominating
the East and we get that in the competition level. Uh,
from what we've seen this year is so much more
intense in the West. Uh. Not quite sure who Philadelphia is. Uh,
(01:41:58):
I have no idea that team that Boston is going
to roll out there. So in the East, the Bucks
know who they are. In the West, there's a battle.
Are the Bucks good enough to beat the west best
team in a seven game series when it all shakes out.
I'm not convinced that they are, but I think they're close.
I think that they are a finals team, Um with
(01:42:21):
a shot, because like you said, hey, they do know
who they are. And I think the other thing that
gets slept on. They're a really good defensive team. They
are long and athletic, and they have an interesting strategy
in that and it it especially could work against the
Laker Clipper team. Their strategy is they packed the paint.
They take away every easy bucket, and they they can
(01:42:43):
do that because Brook Lopez is long. They bring Robin
Lopez off the bench. He's a good defender. Um Janice
is obviously long and athletic and a shot blocker. They've
got all these defensive guys and they give up a
ton of threes. They can't they're long. They can get
out and contest them a little bit, but they're willing
to just dare you to beat them from three. And
I don't know if it becomes interesting because I don't
(01:43:04):
know if the Lakers and Clippers have enough marksmen to
beat them. I think so. I think they do. It's
a really interesting I also think that the Clippers are
particularly have the defenders to make life a little challenging
for them. But it's it's an interesting it's an interesting
strategy because there there's certain teams that could give them
real trouble in the playoffs, but I'm not sure it's
the teams in the finals. There's gonna be a lot
(01:43:25):
of Eric Bledsoe's shoulders if they If they are going
to do this, he has to be special, and he's
not been. He's had moments, but he's not been consistent
in the playoffs. Easy from Salam. I'm Dan Buyer, Kurt
Healing Basketball Talk find That's where you can find him

It'd be nice and toasty warm in Chicago. I don't
know what to go. Oh man, get ready for that
lake effect when you know, staying right off the river.
I'm like I'm gonna freeze that. I'm a California kid.
I don't even have clothes that well. I'll tell you this,
by the clothes there, because you're not gonna you're not
gonna be able to find any of them here. Leave
(01:44:10):
the tags, leave the tags on, and then just return
them when they're done, and then fly out. That'll be
the easiest way to go. Appreciate it, Kurt and Joy
Easy from Salama. I'm Dan Buyer. This is Fox Sports
Sunday Company Live from the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios.
It is neat to move the All Star Game around.
It's neat to move the Super Bowl around. When you
just have a Super Bowl in Miami and then now
(01:44:32):
you're gonna have an NBA All Star Game in Chicago.
You know, David Stern, you can't put it places that cold.
David Stern tried to set up the rotation where you
had about six or seven NBA host All Star Game cities.
It was gonna be Yea, the All Star Game in
Las Vegas at one at one time, but it was
gonna be l A, it was gonna be Phoenix, it
(01:44:52):
was gonna be Houston. It's gonna be New Orleans. It's
gonna be Miami, like that was the rotation. Maybe you
go to New York the time and again, but that
was gonna kind of be the rotation. Now they're going
back to Alright, let's give it to maybe a city
that hasn't had it in a while, or a city
with a new facility. And uh, you end up going
back to Chicago. Our move the All Star Game to
after the season, A right, Chicago on the summer. There's
(01:45:16):
nothing better after the season. After the NFL season, we
still have questions about Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco
forty Niners. We try to answer them after David Gascon
gives us the latest of what's happening on this uh
Sunday with no NFL football but XFL football for sure.
It is indeed, guys, XFL right now going on St.
(01:45:36):
Louis Battle Hawk Dallas Renegades fifteen to nine, going on
the roads St. Louis man doing a road win on
the XFLO underdogs in that game. I thought all the
home teams won the first three games, so yeah, that's right,
roughnext did Defenders did and the Gardens did earlier today
(01:45:59):
three you guys tempted it all a bet on these games,
you want to think about it real quick. You don't
have enough information, right, that's just like bawling your money
up and throwing it out the window. Maybe it'll blow
back into the car, maybe it won't. I'll tell you what, though,
there's a lot of junk football games that people will
(01:46:21):
bet out in the NFL or college football season. I'm
not saying that the XFL is junk, but if you're
betting on those games that you don't have a lot
of information about it. But what you don't have, you
have information about that. We don't know any of these players,
how they play together. If you're betting on junk NFL games,
at least you know the roster, you know the history.
If you're betting on college games, you know the roster,
(01:46:42):
you know the history, they've played before. But Vegas also
knows a lot more about the NFL than they do
the XFL. Right, So blind leading the blind basically, Well,
it's not like these guys are some of these guys
have played the National foot ball leagues. Some of these
guys have obviously played in college. It's not like these
(01:47:02):
guys are just random town know but what I'm saying
is about the game plan. Right. Is this a running team?
Is this a passing team? Do they score a lot
of points? Do they not? Do they have a kicking game?
Or the receiver of receivers catch all of those things
way in on. If you're betting on the over, the under, right,
the points brand, all of those things matter And if
(01:47:25):
you don't have any of that information, what are you
gonna do? So it's like betting on mac football that exactly,
because that truly is my points. Yeah, because you bet
a mid major program, you don't The local reporters don't
always know the information on injured players or schemes and
things like that. So it's not like anyone can pick
(01:47:45):
that stuff up on social media at any given time.
I mean, of course, you get the power of five,
You get all kinds of info on National Football League,
it doesn't matter, But yeah, mid majors, it's the crap.
Shoot here, here's a problem that I see, And I
know you gotta get to your update, but I'll just
use the example for the listener that may be driving
in their car. There's a game right now with five
minutes left, and I know that ESPN is trying to
(01:48:07):
be advanced in their graphics. It's fifteen to nine and
they're giving me the over under a fifty two and
a half, which is what I assume it was at
the start of the game. Give us a live line
if there is one, right, I mean at this point, like, okay,
we know it's probably going to hit the under as
there's only twenty four you know, points scored in this game.
(01:48:27):
That's the way to advance it, you know, in a
betting technological way. Well, you guys are talking the previous
segment too. I think there was a high snap and
it went behind the quarterback and the camera crew was
actually behind the quarterbacks, so he had to come running
off before he got stampede. It looked just like the
kid like wiping the floor at the basketball game. There's
(01:48:49):
a fast break transition the other way. So don't do
you guys like the products so far? It's football. It's good.
I mean, there's some talent out there. They're guys doing something.
It's not what they build it to be. It's not
going to be shootouts in high scorers in short games,
and blah blah blah. I know this is the first week.
Teams are trying to figure out who they are and
so on and so forth. But like we just said,
(01:49:10):
it's fifteen to nine. I mean, my sports calendar for
forty three years has not had football, you know, after
the NFL, and that's usually how it stays. It's gonna
take me a little while to warm up to the action.
But what I've seen hasn't been bad. I just don't
know if I'm going to be fully sold. Well, guys,
Major League Baseball, they'll start things off in a couple
of weeks of spring training. It is now official. ESPNS
(01:49:32):
Jeff pass And had reported earlier today Mookie Betts is
bound for l A. That trade's gonna go through, so
he comes along with David Price, and the Red Sox
will pay half of his contract was nine million dollars.
Alex Verdugo and shirtstep Jeter Downs will make their way
from l A to Boston. NBA today Rockets and Jazz,
and the first quarter in Houston already a firefight. Houston
(01:49:54):
leads thirty three to twenty five Russell Westbrook in the
first quarter, Guys at seventeen points. Donovan Mitchell as nine,
Bulls trailing in Philadelphia buy six Atlanta now and from
the Knicks three to seventy three. Earlier today, Boston dropped
okay see one twelve to one eleven. Jason Tatum had
twenty six points to you guys, appreciate it, Dave. It
(01:50:14):
is Fox Sports Sunday. Easy from Salam. I'm Dan Buyer.
We are coming alive from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios.
It's easy to say fifteen centimore on our insurance with
Geiko go to Geiko di Comma College under nine four
seven auto. The only hard part figuring out which way
is easier. I was about this time last week that
I believe that the forty Niners and Chiefs probably were
not at at ten uh somewhat. In Super Bowl fifty four,
(01:50:35):
we saw the forty Niners take a twenty to ten lead,
then we saw the Chiefs go on that twenty one
nothing run to end the game and win Super Bowl
fifty four. There were questions about Jimmy Garoppolo's play in
that fourth quarter, including a big pass that he missed
the Emmanuel Sanders that maybe could have given the forty
Niners the lead. Now that the NFL off season is here,
Jimmy Garoppolo has that Super Bowl in this rear view
(01:50:57):
mirror with a I. I he was really good for
a good portion of that game for what he wanted
to do, but at the end one that needed meant
to make throws they weren't there. Are you at all
concerned about Jimmy Garoppolo's future after seeing what you saw
in Super Bowl fifty? No, I'm not. And uh, I
think as he gets more and more games, he'll get
more and more comfortable. That offense he's running is a
(01:51:19):
quarterback friendly offense. Doesn't need to be uh, Peyton Manning
doesn't need to be Tom Brady or Ben Roethlisberger in
that offense. All he needs to be is accurate and serviceable.
That's it. And as he gets, you know, another year
removed from the injury, the a c L and more
um comfortable in that offense, I think he'll be fine.
(01:51:42):
It's actually the perfect type of offense for him because
it's predicated on run, first play action, and great tight end,
which he has all all all of those things. He
had a stretch that was very impressive after throwing that
interception in the first half where he threw like one
in comple he passed from that point all the way
up until the fourth quarter. But with everything you said,
(01:52:04):
I think lends credence to that stretch that he had
in the Super Bowl. The question now, though, is when
the going gets tough and you have to make the throw,
And I think it's to kind of come full circle
on how we started off the show. That's gonna be
the question about Dak Prescott. When the money is on
the line, are you able to make that throw? And
(01:52:24):
I think now with Jimmy Garoppolo not being able to
make the plays that you needed him to make in
Super Bowl fifty four, I think that ends up being
the bugaboo. We know he's gonna have nice games and
he's gonna be in a quarterback friendly system, But when
the when the ball is snapped and the play has
to be made, is Jimmy Garoppolo gonna be able to
do it? With three of eleven I believe down the
(01:52:46):
stretching super Bowl fifty four got pressured. It wasn't even
the get able to get a pass off on on
a fourth dound play. Both of the things I'm concerned about.
If I'm a I get it. But we saw Jimmy
Garoppolo go to New Orleans and make those plays right.
We saw him take uh we needed something from We
saw him do that. We saw him do it in Seattle,
(01:53:08):
we saw him do it against the Rams. So he
has the ability to do these things. We've seen him
do it. It's just everybody only remembers the last game
you've played, and it happened to be the Super Bowl.
But when he beat the Saints in New Orleans, everybody
was like, wow, that was a heroic performance. Drove the
team down, he was unscathed, outdueled um Drew Brees. So
(01:53:29):
he's had these moments, He's had these abilities. He has
the ability to do that. So I can't write him
off if I've seen him actually do it. Yeah, I'm
not going to write him off. But I think that
this becomes something that looks over his shoulder and this
ends up happening. And sometimes it's the nature of the
beastie from when you have If Jimmy Garoppolo goes through
a poor stretch during the regular season, it's going to
(01:53:52):
be brought up like there's there are certain things now
if they go back and win it, he has a
great super Bowl. Then he talked about it how he
matured and he's a different orderback, like he can be
the one in charge of changing his narrative. But I
think that the Super Bowl performance in the fourth quarter
is something that is going to stick with him and
will be tough to shake, especially when the slightest of
(01:54:13):
bad things happen to the forty niners. Easy from Salam,
I'm Dan Buyer. This is Fox Sports Sunday Company a
live from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios. It's easy
to say more on our our insurance. We get goo
goo to guida commer call it hundter don for Sevenado.
The only hard part figuring out which way is easier.
It may be difficult to predict who's gonna win in
the XFL, but it should be easy to my co
(01:54:34):
host and who's gonna win the Oscars tonight? Yeah, the
Big Ones, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best actress, Best Actor?
What am I missing? Anything else? Be? Best screenplay, supporting,
supporting all of that. He from has got it for
you next year on Fox Sports Sunday. Fox Sports Sunday.
Easy from Salam, I'm Dan Buyer. We'll get to the
Oscars in a second. You want to make note that
(01:54:55):
Spike Lee is wearing a special text tonight, a tribute
to Kobe Bryant Purple and Gold. The numbers UH number
twenty four, two and four on each of the lapels.
It was two weeks ago that the tragedy happened, not
far from our Sherman Oak studios here uh at Fox
Sports Radio. I was in Miami at the time. It's
the first time that we've actually gotten together since the
(01:55:17):
day of the accident, wh when we did our show,
and now it's been two weeks later, and it's just
I just wanted to bring up the point of just
how how crazy that day was of you and I
getting together, and it's probably well, actually it's the show
that I've most been asked about or talked about, or
someone has commented about to me about hearing our shows
(01:55:37):
and really any of the shows that I heard. That
show that day and now two weeks later, and it's
just amazing too to still, you know, see the city
and everybody around it still affected by that by the
tragedy from two weeks ago. Yeah, it is, and uh,
He'll always be remembered. Um, that was an intense show,
Peabody worthy and um, I just you know, around Los
(01:56:02):
Angeles their murals and dedications and you know it's it's
it's something that will always be uh prevalent and will
always will always remember him. He will always be honored here,
especially in Los Angeles and the l A memorial taking
place at Staples Center two weeks from tomorrow to four
the date, so it's very fitting with Kobe's number and
(01:56:25):
Gianna's number. Mentioned that Spike Lee was wearing the tux
to honor Kobe. We expect Toby also to be a
part of the honors tonight at the Oscars, as he
was an Oscar winner for his uh for his short
film that that he had a few years ago. Basketball.
It's uh yeah, so it'll be uh we'll we'll see
that tonight at the Oscars. We will also see awards
(01:56:46):
given out for Best Picture. I'm gonna lean on you
e from salam Ryan bur Singer, our executive producer. I'm
not sure how many movies you guys have seen Bobbo
as well on the board, I've only seen three of
the Best Picture. If you guys just want to weigh
in for the amount of photos there, the movies that
you have seen who's gonna win tonight have ad it
who wins Best Picture from? For me, I think it's
(01:57:09):
once au plent a time in Hollywood. I love that movie,
love to take on it. Quintantino always puts his special
uh As sauce on an actual event, and uh I
I enjoyed that. Ryan. You want to weigh in on
your thoughts on who is going to win Best Picture tonight?
I think Parasite pulls off the upset tonight. Um for
(01:57:32):
a while, I was hard on on I was I
was big on nineteen seventeen and uh I I think
that they still have a very strong chance. But I
think Parasite does pull off the upset. How did Dodge
versus Volkswagen not make it in that? Did not see
Ford Versus movie. I've heard good things. I've only I've
(01:57:52):
only seen Joker the Irishman in Marriage Story because two
of them were on Netflix. Definitely not Marriage Story. Didn't
like Marriage Story. I just it was boring. I thought
it was a conversation between two people. Uh, it has
some unrealistic uh you know conversations. And I mean that
right there is why it's gonna win. Right because you
(01:58:15):
didn't remember a couple of years ago sideways a couple
of a decade ago sideways one and I was just like,
what a bunch of people having a midlife crisis drinking wine?
And I was just like, okay, this is but it
won And you know, I don't know, all right? What
about Adam Driver's performance in marriage is he's one of
the five up for actor in a leading role. You've
(01:58:38):
got Antonio Banderas, leon Uder DiCaprio, Jonathan Price, and Joakin Phoenix. Uh.
And Adam Driver was great. Leonardo was great, but nobody
was better than Joakin Phoenix and as the joker. You
guys weigh in on that, I agree with that. I
would say I've only seen two of them, so I
guess I would have to pick Joaquin Phoenix. Yah. Then
(01:58:59):
the uh, the actress in a leading role? Anyone stand out?
Charlie then possibly. I'm sure no one here saw this,
but Rene Wager was great and Judy she was wonderful
and I think she's the front runner. Somebody what movie Judy? Yeah,
I didn't see it. The lady and ahead of me
(01:59:19):
on the flight home from the super Bowl was watching it,
so I saw clips of it when I woke up
from my nap. Ryan Burr Singer your pick on actress
in a leading role. I have not seen Judy either,
but I from everyone that I've I've talked to and
things I've heard, Yeah, that seems that's gonna be the
one that's gonna be the consensus. Alright, final two actor
in a supporting role and actress in a supporting role.
(01:59:40):
Uh uh, you know Al Patino, Joe Peshy, Anthony Hopkins,
Tom Hanks. This this field is loaded, But it's the
one guy I didn't mention, and that's Brad Pitt. His
performance and once, once upon a time high it was legendary.
It was unbelievable, man, Ryan. But I'm I'm pulling for
Joe Pesci. I thought he was brilliant in Irishman. I
(02:00:03):
thought he was outshined a little bit, but that was
the role that that was the purpose of his role.
He was very restrained, very calm throughout and the scene
towards the end where he tells Robert de Niro to
do what he has to do, this is brilliant. I
thought he was great. By the way, if this were
a final four, this is like Duke North Carolina, Kansas
and Kentucky. Right, I don't think you could put San
(02:00:28):
Diego State in their actress in the supporting role. It
definitely goes to Laura Dern and Marriage Although I wasn't
a fan of the movie, she was fantastic in it
and a slight outside favorite Scarlett Johansson and Jojoe Rabbit. Alright, right,
I agree with Laura Dern. I think that's the thing.
There were really interesting. I didn't realize that when I
(02:00:49):
was watching Marriage Story that I was watched watching an
oscar worthy performance was great. But what are you good
with that? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, I agree with that. I
from It's been fun. Enjoy the Oscars tonight. Get from
on Twitter, Addie from Salam I'm at Dan Buyer on Fox. Yeah.
More of the XFL and so much more coming up
(02:01:10):
next year on Fox Sports Radio. I'll talk to you
next week.
