and angst from Arnie already, we haven't even started yet.
(00:21):
You think I'm gonna be happy for you? I'm sure
That's what friends do. That's what friends do. It is like, Hey, congratulations,
I've picked against your team every single week this year,
and they've proven me wrong all but ones. Remember when
Okoma lost to Iowa State and I we did the
whole show on how your team's out of it now,
(00:41):
and I was laughing at you. Remember that, Yeah, but
I also remember saying, Hey, nobody's out of it at
this point. In fact, go back, I'm pulling up. I'm
in the process of working on every single time you
picked against Oklahoma this year, which shouldn't be too hard
because I just have to go back and listen to
every scene gold Picks segment that we do at the
(01:02):
end of the show. Everything. I don't even I don't
even know why you're being so mean to me, because
without me, I've turned your life around. I mean when
we started doing this show. When we started doing this
show five years ago, you were some shlub doing the
show and what Eni Oklahoma or something like that. I
don't know where you were. Congratulations on the en It drop.
(01:24):
I remember the boss coming to me goes, hey, can
you work with a guy named Chris Plank. I go,
who's that. He's like, it's from en It, Oklahoma or someplace.
I go, what, I go, what are you doing to me?
I you give me some guy from Oklahoma. He's like, hey,
take him along, put him under your wing, teach him
the ropes a little bit. Next thing I know, of course,
(01:45):
I'm making the show real popular and big. You're along
for the ride. Obviously, Norman Oklahoma heard the show. They said, hey,
we gotta hire that guy that doesn't get to talk,
but she sounds good when he gets to talk. So
you got the job in oklahom at the University of
Oklahoma because of me. Now you're gonna go out and
see you play in a championship. You will be your
whole life pretty much exactly how it went down. I
(02:09):
think if you were to go back through the the time,
stamp on everything. Hey, they all four of these teams
that are in the College Football Playoff, and we'll get
into the debate about Ohio State being left out, but
all four of these teams, much like my path to
success here, have had very unique paths to get to
where they are. The only team that's sitting here in
(02:29):
this four team playoff that can say they beat every
team on their schedule is technically Georgia because the team
they lost too, they went back out and beat. Now
Alabama may have that opportunity in the title game. I know.
Actually I'm sorry they won't because Auburn's out. My bad. Uh,
no one else is gonna have the opportunity to say
that this year outside of Georgia. So much like my
path to be here at the University of Oklahoma, arn'ty.
(02:52):
Every single one of these teams has a few wards.
But here we are, Uh controversy aside. I think we
gotta hell of a four team playoff come up in
a couple of weeks. What do you think I was
on last night? And uh, of course it wasn't. Didn't
take a rocket scientist to figure out it was gonna
be Clemson, Oklahoma, Georgia. Though some people seem to have
oklahomat number one. I didn't even know if that was
(03:13):
gonna be a controversy because I never even really considered
that and that wasn't my thing. But I was watching TV,
and let's be honest, I'm looking at ESPN, and all
the pundits there had Ohio State and is at number four.
And I'm like, then, you know what, if I'm wrong,
I'll just go down with I'm wrong. But I gotta
be honest with you. If I'm picking the fourth team,
my fourth team's gotta be Alabama. They've been number one
(03:33):
all year long. They lose to the crosstown rivals on
the road in the Iron Bowl, and now we want
to go and punish him and say he can't be
in a fourth team playoff. Doesn't work that way now
doing the Ohio Ohio State team that lost by thirty
one to Iowa. So my thought all along last night
was that Alabama was gonna be the number four team
and and and that's the way it was gonna go.
(03:54):
And sure enough it was. But I guess there was
a lot of surprise about that. Chris. You know, it's
pretty interesting, uh, in watching the way that this went
down from a Buckeyes fans perspective because Ohio State fans
and this was I mean, y'all know this, This was
the challenge for them because they were arguing the exact
opposite point that they were arguing four last year. Because
(04:17):
last year Ohio States take was the conference titles didn't matter. Uh,
this year they did matter. And I'm still love the belief.
I heard Bruce Feldman say this earlier right here on
Fox Sports Radio with Jonas and Brady. I think when
Arnie Spaniel was on the air last night, if as
you were wrapping up and they had that one magical
dude who was working the turf and doing all the
little magical thing, one guy working fixing the turf in
(04:38):
the Big Ten championship game, Uh, if that score had
been something along the lines of forty four to ten,
are thirty five six, whatever you want to use for
Ohio State because of the optics of it, I think
we're looking at a much different situation. But because that
game was relatively tight, because Alabama has been anie the
consistently best team, consist been the best team in college
(05:01):
football this season becauseless I get it that every want
us to go. But they played Mercer and Florida State sucked. Well,
it was an Alabama's fault that Florida State stunk this year.
They still scheduled up and it's not their fault that
the SEC still has this archaic rule where they don't
play nine conference games and they're forced to go out
and get an extra nonconference games. So I'll tell you
(05:21):
what I had a I had a hard time with
it at first. I thought about it. I I read
a lot, I listened a lot, and I think they
got it right. Annie. I think whenever, you know, we
have these conversations over the next couple of weeks, I
think they're gonna look back and and the Big Ten's
gonna cry, and they're gonna complain, and they're gonna have
Jim Delaney everywhere in the Urban Meyer everywhere, and other
coaches everywhere. But in the end, it's just I'm sorry,
(05:43):
don't don't give up fifty two. I went a loss,
and we don't be in a different situation, you know,
because I don't think it was necessarily because the game
was close. I think it's because Ohio stated raised out
to an early lead. They had come up with the
big plays and it seemed like they were gonna go
on into the route, and as the game no longer,
it got closer and closer. We had Nick Bosa on
last night and I even asked him, I going, were
(06:04):
you surprised that it was even that close the way
you guys got He goes, yeah, because yeah, I was surprised.
I thought we're gonna have an easy winning with the
way things started. So you know, um, I think because
of that reason alone, because it was supposed to be
a blowout and it got out to it what was
I believe, or even worse than that at one point,
because you know of the of the delay and all that,
(06:26):
and it got so close. I think that was one
of the reasons I worked against Ohio State when it
was I think it worked against him, oh because I
think the exact opposite. I think if if you go
into a situation and keep in mind three people. I
don't understand how they do this with the committee, but
three people had to recuse themselves from the meetings whenever
they would talk about what Ohio State and I think
even Alabama when they would have those debates. So with
(06:48):
that in mind, you're basically not only ten guys making
this decision, But I I think optics played a part
in and I'm not saying it's the only factor. But again,
I think if that was a blowout last night, it
might be a different story. But we got all night
to talk about this. I know you talked about it
a lot last night on your show, and we'll take
your calls to at eight seven or seven ninety five.
I couldn't have I was certainly wouldn't have made a
(07:09):
big stick if they would have said, and I know
they don't do it this way, but subconsciously they would
have said, hey, look enough with the South, enough of
the SEC, Alabama their chance they lost put in Ohio state,
who won their half. We need somebody in the Midwest.
We've got that kind of equal that's out geographically. I
wouldn't have been surprised if they would have done that, though, no, no,
it wouldn't be surprised. Oh can I can I get
(07:29):
one quick gript out of the way this whole Uh,
we don't have the ratings yet, or we don't have
the rankings yet. Thing that they were doing, but they
magically just happened to appear right when they told us
they would splain that to me please, It makes absolutely
no sense whatsoever. All right, we don't we don't have
we don't have the rankings yet. But our buddy Brandon
(07:51):
over here, as soon as he gets him, is gonna
put him in the computer. And there I'm thinking to myself,
what are they Are they still not? Are you trying
to say they haven't made up their mind yet? Is
it carry your pigeon bringing this thing? It just seems
so hokey and ridiculous. Just say, hey, we're gonna let
you know when we find out at eleven thirty. If
they just would have not tried to be so melodramatic
about it, just give the damn rankings and you can
(08:13):
talk about it and fight about it for the next
hour if you would like. And I could tell you
two guys that are Ohio State alums that are on
that panel, so you know what they're gonna say. You
have a dude that apparently hasn't watched anything but SEC
football this year, so you pretty much know what you're
gonna get for an hour. It saved me a lot
of time. Now, By the way, breaking news in college football,
Herm Edwards has officially become the next head football coach
(08:35):
at Arizona State. Arny so breaking news. This has been
announced by Arizona State. Here at eight oh nine Pacific time.
Herm Edwards is the new head coach at Arizona State.
That's your eight the most. Yeah, it doesn't scare me
at all, Chris, good hire for them, Good luck, and
(08:55):
you know, we'll see if he's has his heart into
it and how long he's gonna last. Sure if this
is like a retirement job, I don't know. But uh,
it's a good hire for them. I guess. I'm not
worried about it, though. Now you shouldn't be. And I
understand the mindset of trying to get recruits to go
play for the guy that they've seen on TV. But
(09:16):
the guy hasn't coached in the college game and what
thirty years, and you're forcing coordinators on him, so he
inherits the two coordinators that Todd Graham bought abroad. I
don't know, it just doesn't annoyed coordinators of his own
property that he can bring. So I know, right, just
just an odd higher tonight. So we'll we'll get back
to college football later. Boy, I think the biggest story
in the NFL is we focus of course, on the
(09:38):
excitement that is developing in the a f C West. Anybody, anybody,
But I think the biggest story that developed from today
was the Gronk hit and the potential suspension. We'll take
your calls on this tonight at eight seven, seven ninety
nine on Fox. We'll get your tweets. Arnie is at
Stinkingenius one s T I N K I N Genius
and the number one I'm at Plank Show. Everybody can
check in at Fox Sports Radio is Well. But that
(10:01):
was dirty. I mean, Bill Belichick apologized for it afterwards.
Was how bad it was? There has to be a
suspension coming with this, right I you know, I go
back and forth on this. I saw the hit, I'm like,
oh my goodness. I didn't think it was all that bad.
I thought that maybe you got him in the shoulder blade.
But it was certainly was blatant, he apologized. Belichick apologized.
(10:22):
I can see them just giving him like a fifty
thou dollar fine and moving on. I don't think they
wanted to spend them for a game, though. Who knows.
Maybe the NFL will come down to harder them, but
I don't think they will. Well, he did cause a
concussion on the guy, so when when you bring an injury,
it'll be interesting to see. Whenever he didn't even get
tossed from the game. And I understand we had a
society that gets outraged about everything they see on Twitter.
(10:44):
But we'll see what the NFL decides to do on that.
But outside of the Grand Kit, Patriots stay hot. Uh
as Saints are now in control of the South. He
got a three way tie in the a f C West,
and this game tonight looked like it was going to
get a little bit entertaining. Whenever Carson went through the
touchdown and Nelson I large, Yeah, Seahawks full pull away
now ten seven, eight teen left in this game. On
(11:05):
the Seahawks making a bit of a statement here on
Sunday night, Yeah, I'm surprised. I thought that Philadelphia not
only was gonna go ahead and win this but have
their way with Seattle. They had so many injuries, so
I'm shocked at Seattle is putting up the Sefford by
the way on the on the text line, David k
writes in Stick of Genius, be more specific, Alabama didn't
win their conference. They didn't even play for the championship.
Fifty six ranks strength of schedule. Pitt played a harder schedule,
(11:28):
so obviously he's an Ohio State fan. There may be
more specific for you. They were ranked number one all
year long, okay, and they lost to their cross town rivals,
who was number two at the time, and Arburn was
a team that could have easily made the four team playoff.
You're talking about the SEC, right, which I know it's
not been as good as years past, but it's still
the SEC and Alabama one loss to the cross town
(11:50):
rivals not good enough to knock them out to a
team that's lungs by thirty one the IOWA. There is
that more specific for you, sir? Yeah, And I think
that's the real That's the glaring issue here is how
uncompetitive they were against Iowa. You are, you can lose it.
I was still end up in the playoffs. You can't
get beat like that and end up sliding in. Uh. Well, boy,
(12:11):
you shifted quickly to the Obama debate away from Sunday
Night football. So we'll talk some college football when we
come back to eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox
eight seven seven six three six nine And and don't
forget Twitter up and rolling. When we come back to
the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios, let's go in depth
with some of the early tweets. Get your calls rolling
(12:31):

you can join the fight. Help the Salvation Army fight

(12:55):
That's s A L for Salvation Army s A L Join.
J O I in, how will you going out to
Cali for? I don't know. I don't know what I
don't I haven't seen the travel itinerary, I haven't seen
the plans. I'm I think the team gets out there
like the day after Christmas is whenever they're heading now,
I'll probably be a couple of days out. I'll tell
you all the good clubs to go to or to eat.
(13:16):
I'll set it out for you. Don't worry about that.
Why I'm ready. I'm ready. I'll say this much way.
Do you know I went to I went to junior
high school there with the high school there, I'm mr
l A there, Come on now, I think you've watched it, lay.
I was a big star in l A. I was
a pretty big deal they're playing. I believe you've mentioned
that a few times. Uh. The one thing though for
(13:37):
me is I'm just I'm kind of a little bit
of a fanboy when it comes to being able to
go to stadiums that I dug growing up, and I've
always wanted to go to a Rose Bowl or cover
a Rose Bowl. It's my earliest memory as a kid
as a sports fan watching Rick new Heisl and U
c l A take on Illinois and the Rose Bowl
whenever I was about eight seven years old. So I'm
(13:58):
not grand daddy of all kind of pumped to go
out and be a part of that. But it's gonna
be fun. Oklahoma and Georgia and once semi final Alabama
and Clemson in the trilogy. I heard a little bit
of your debate about this last night, saw some Twitter
action on it as well too. It had to be
in the front of everybody's mind in that committee, and
(14:20):
you know TV was thinking about it as well. To
the drama that would involve Alabama and Clemson Part three? Right?
What that? What that? That's why they wanted to have
it that way. You think that was in the committee's mind.
That's why they wanted to have it set up that way, Chris.
Maybe maybe. I mean, you're looking at a situation to
where you can't put Alabama in as anything higher than
the four. I guess hypothetically you could, but it would
(14:43):
really be a bad look. Uh. And I think they
kind of like the idea of Clemson and in Alabama
and what are you getting? Everything? And everything that's great?
You get at least the trilogy out of it, right,
every great boxing match, every great movie is like a trilogy.
Now Bears Bears Bad just breaking Training, Bad News Bearers
went to Japan. You get the three out all of them.
You know. I think about this guy. I thought it
(15:05):
was funny. Are Kirk curb Street didn't think it was good?
When Ohio State didn't get it ounced, I was surprised.
I thought I wanted Alabama to get it. I thought
Alabama should get in, but I thought I was gonna
be wrong, and the committee was gonna go with Ohio
State when it was said and done, Yeah, I did
I really thought, up until the moment that Alabama was
announced that it was going to be Ohio State. I
(15:28):
really thought, with kind of the old school mindset, that
the old conference championship wouldn't matter a lot and it
would be a bigger deal. But uh, Loane beholding what.
We got a lot of tweets that I want to
get to your calls as well to at eight seven,
seven ninety nine on Fox Tons to recap as well
from the day in the NFL, including the Saints with
their big win. I think they kind of they thrust
(15:48):
themselves right into that conversation of a super Bowl contender
in the NFC. Maybe maybe we've been sleeping on Minnesota
as well too quite a bit. And I also want
to ask what was more important a good win? What? What?
Excuse me? What weighs more in college football? A really
good win or a really bad loss A really good win.
I think there's no doubt about well. I was gonna
(16:11):
say the other way, because anybody could talk about is
Ohio States thirty one point lost to Iowa and that's
why they're not in this thing? Yeah, what's the really
good win that jumps out at you? No, No, But
I'm just saying overall, not for them. I'm just saying
in the team's resume, what's more important. Somebody that has
a really good win or does that way, does that
weigh more than a team that has a really bad loss?
(16:33):
What weighs more in the committee's mind. You know, three
of three of the four teams that are in the
playoffs have a really bad loss. Oklahoma lost to Iowa State.
Clemson lost was a top fifteen team or top twenty
team at the time, where they not okay, well, well,
Clemson's number in the first playoff poll Iowa State was fourteen. Okay,
so you can't that's that's can't you can't knock them
(16:54):
for that, Clarky. How about this? Clemson lost to a
Syracuse team that didn't want another game after they beat Clemson. Right,
Alabama's loss was to an Auburn team. When I think
every single Bama fan that's listening, well, if you're listening
to Ryan Fowler last week, he felt the same way too.
They weren't competitive, they were dominated on the line of scrimmage.
Auburn was a two seats So so again you're looking
(17:16):
at a situation where you have some bad losses in here,
but at least for say a Clemson, that bad loss
was offset by alright, so yeah, Chris will be right
back with us. But you know, I was, I was
(17:36):
saying this last night. You know, when you when you
take a look at the losses that some of these
teams had, and especially you know, especially that loss that
Ohio State had to Iowa, that's what people kept on
talking about less like that's that's what was all the
text and getting texts like crazy. So if if you
want to go ahead and send into the text real simple,
we'll get to those later on also at Plank Show
(17:58):
and Stinking Genius one. But that's what weighed heavily on
my mind that they got Claubert, they got destroyed by Iowa.
I mean, you you lost by thirty one, and then
you gotta say to yourself, Okay, maybe that's a one
time thing, but they lost Oklahoma, and there's no shaving
losing Oklahoma. But you still lost by double digits. You
still you still lost thirty one sixteen. So you know,
(18:22):
it wasn't like that game was closed. It wasn't like
that one came down to the wire. That was the
problem there. So that's why when I was taking a
look at it yesterday, I said, you gotta go with Alabama.
And also I know the SEC and I'm getting a
lot of text on this, so I'm gonna get to
them in just a second. But I know the SEC
was not as great as it was in years past.
(18:45):
But still take a look at Alabama's resume. They were
number one all year long. I know they beat a
Mississippi State team that was what a top sixteen or
top seventeen team at the time, and it's not been
a typical great year for Alabama and scheduling wise, uh
and who knew Florida State was gonna be that bad,
especially when the quarterback went down in that first game.
(19:07):
So I understand how all that happened there, I I
really do. But when it comes to push and shove,
you can't overlook what happened Ohio State with the two losses.
You just can't overlook the thirty one point loss to Iowa.
And when it came down to Alabama losing one game
to the rivals and the Iron Bowl, who was a
(19:29):
two seed. Now did they have great victimies? Perhaps not,
perhaps not like in years past, but they still beat
a Florida State. What bothers me about the SEC is
playing one less conference games, and you gotta stop with
the mercers. Okay, you gotta stop with those with teams
like Mercer and Citadel and anything to go ahead and
you know, just go ahead and get an easy victory.
(19:53):
You just can't do it anymore. What they'll give Alabama
little credit. At least at the beginning of the year,
they had Fresno who went to their conference championship. They
had Colorado State also, so I'll go ahead and give
him a little bit of credit for that. You know,
if you're scheduling, scheduling Patsy's, some teams won't even go
that high. But overall, when you have Mercer on the schedule,
that's all people can think about. That's like having a
(20:15):
bye We could be honest, nothing against Mercer, but that's
like having a bye week at the end of the
year when everybody else is playing tough games. So that's
the one thing that really really sticks out at me.
You know, when you look at that Alabama schedule. They've
got to stop with the mercers this year. It didn't
cost them next year since so many people brought it up.
(20:39):
Who knows next year, they'll say, you know what, this
has got to stop. We gotta go ahead and we
we've got to stop this, and we got to make
sure that there's better teams on the schedule. And if
you're gonna schedule Patsy's, you can't schedule what do they
call that? The f BS N A I A D two,
D three whatever it was. For crying out loud, you
can't be schedule teams like that. No more Citadel, Uh,
(21:03):
No more uh teams we not. I didn't even know
Mercer out of team. Okay, No more schools like that.
At least have some guts where you're no more than
like a thirty point favorite instead of like a fifty
or sixty point favorite. Okay, So enough of teams like that.
That way we don't have to criticize you and something.
(21:24):
It's gonna come back and bite you in the backside
when your schedule pats He's like that, you know, in
my back And I don't know what just happened. It
was like I was talking so much, I just cut
you off. I'm sorry now, I wouldn't blame you. I've
got a lot to say tonight. We got three hours
to fill. I'll say, Arnie, everyone has to get on
the same page with with what they're doing with their
(21:45):
conference scheduling. Don't you think don't we have to reach
that point where everyone's playing uh nine conference games instead
of this eight and scheduling four nonconference games. Doesn't that
seem to make more? The Pack twelve does it? The
Big twelve? Does it? I don't get it. Why it's
not happy in the SEC. I don't believe it's happening
in the a SEC or the SEC either is. I
know it's not in the SEC. You know, it's just
(22:06):
like your conference can form. When we gave you grief
over not having a conference championship, did we not? Absolutely?
How many years ago? I remember just pounding you for
the first couple of years ago. That's what you get.
You're not gonna have a conference and you guys had
enough is enough and you conformed. The SEC has gotta conform.
But I gotta feel and they think they're like elitist
and and they're not gonna go and do that. I
(22:28):
don't know why then, why you can't schedule a nine
conference game. You gotta have that Mercer game or that
Signethal game. So bad That just kills me because I
can't have that anymore. I think you're probably looking at
a situation to where maybe they're thinking more about a payday, right,
I mean, wouldn't that have to be one scenario for
some of these schools that they're looking at it more
for a payday. But that doesn't really seem to make
(22:50):
too much sense because Obama or an Auburn, they're not
making the money they're paying these people millions. You wouldn't
cost yourself any money if you just added another conference game,
do you well, they don't care about the million dollars.
Don't make that over and over again. Do you give
them credit for scheduling like a fres No and a
Colorado State. Fresno went to their half of the championship
(23:11):
in their own conference. I'm just whether you get that's
supposed to be their past of games. I gotta give
him a little bit of credit for that. I give
them credit for that. Di Sega, what do you think
you have hit on the issue of the college football debate.
It's not whether Ohio State or how they played it
at Iowa. It's a little more equality by everyone playing
nine conference games. And I just hate the SEC a
(23:33):
few years ago, actually having a debate should we go
to nine conference games and deciding no, we will not,
and they're compromised. They would say, was well, at least
we now forced our teams to play one real team
out of their four nonconference games. Great, congratulations. You know
who Alabama's playing in November next year? Citadel. It was
(23:55):
Mercer this year, in Mexico State after that, and then
Georgia State Kent State the year after that. Then they'll
be back to Mercer. It's all for years already scheduled.
It's ridiculous that you have supposedly equal conferences playing an
unequal number of games. A what else you got to Sega?
What's going on tonight? And we're missing well, Seattle is
(24:18):
killing the Philadelphia Eagles a minute five to go in Seattle.
Seahawks in the lead, now three hundred yards passing for
Carson Wentz three fourteen in fact, but he's just thrown
an interception. He's been sacked three times tonight. Russell Wilson
has three touchdown passes for Seattle the Rams one at
Arizona thirty two to sixteen. The Rams led sixteen nothing
in the first quarter, and that included a fifty six
(24:40):
yard field goal and an interception returned for a touchdown.
Greg the leg Greg's our line great again for the Rams,
four for four on field goals. New Orleans now leads
the NFC South by one game over the Panthers. They've
beatn Carolina twice, including today thirty one to twenty one.
Mark Ingram fourteen carries eighty five yards in a score.
The Chargers beat the windless Cleave and Brown's nineteen to
(25:01):
ten Cleveland oh and twelve, But they did get Josh
Gordon back, and boy they tired eleven times. In his
first game back, he had four receptions eighty five yards.
Travis Coon's X of Cleveland from southern California was the
Chargers kicker from I assumed today and beyond. He was
four for five on field goals, and Oakland beat the
Giants seventeen. Gino Smith started for the Giants. He fumbled
(25:24):
twice and threw a late touchdown pass tight and Evan
Ingram was seven receptions in the lost ninety nine yards
and a touchdown. Kansas City lost its fourth straight, Denver
lost its eighth in a row. New England won it's
eighth straight game Minnesota fourteen nine win at Atlanta. The
details that Alabama was selected for the College Football Playoff.
It'll play number one Clemson in a semifinal in the
(25:46):
Sugar Bowl New Year's Night. Oklahoma will face Georgia in
the Rose Bowl the other semifinal. I for one, congratulate you, Chris,
and welcome to Pasadena. The number five Pike. I must
have missed that, the number five ranked state, but well
he's on the payroll. The Ohio State Buckets will be
(26:07):
in the Cotton Bowl against usc The Fiesta Bowl will
be Penn State against Washington, and the Peach Bowl Central
Florida twelve and oh against Auburn. And Auburn has agreed
to a seven year deal to keep coach Gus Males on.
And Yes, tonight, Arizona State made it official hiring Herman
Edwards as head coach. Yes, do I get the breaking
news promo on that for a second. By the way, Chris,
(26:34):
I will later in the show bring up the last
time Oklahoma and Georgia were each in Rolls Bowl games,
one each. Yes, and as a matter of fact, we
win over the last oh you trip, So I can't
wait to get into those We could spend all trying
to find the last oh you Georgia matchup, and we'll
never find it. These two teams have never met. We
(26:54):
are coming to your life from the Getico Fox Sports
radio studios. It's easy to say or more on car
insurance with Geico, go to Geico dot com or called
seven Auto. The only hard part figuring out which way
is easier. Boy, people get testy when you start getting
into these debates about what's the proper way to schedule,
how you need to go about setting up your schedule,
(27:16):
how you need to go about making noise with the committee.
Everyone seems to have the perfect way in their mind.
But yet here we are with what at least maybe
one or two teams. I mean, I think you USC
has a gripe, right, I mean we gripe. We could
gripe for USC tonight. Being left out of this well,
they don't really have a case. But my thing is this,
Well we have a debate about the NFL and playoffs
(27:40):
like we do about college football in the playoffs. Not
even close. I mean no, we could do We could
do three hours snight easy on college football and not
even bring up you know this Sunday's NFL games. I mean,
people are like, okay, whatever, let's just see makes the playoffs,
and this is all college football. Everybody's all pumped up
about this well, and it's been fun to follow. And
(28:00):
for someone who is a college football fanatic like you
and I are, it's it's always fun whenever your sport
takes center stage. This is why there's a part of
me that's kind of against expanding. I'm a big fan
of potentially expanding to six. At some point, I think
it's a little bit too much. But this is why
for now forced kind of fun because of the debate
that it really, it really seems to kick off. Let's
(28:22):
a couple of good ones here that I wanted to
get to, This one from Mark who says, what's so
good about the SEC exactly? I'll give you the pretty
good lines and running backs, but to say defenses in
general would be a mistake because the quarterback play is
pe you trid well. I mean, well, we'll have a
chance to find out in a couple of bowl games.
But it's been pretty consistently solid and Vegas tends to
(28:46):
always favor the SEC. Though I haven't seen the lines
on the four team playoff games yet, Arnie, will we
have those for your picks later today? Or yeah I
have them already, but yeah, well if you give them
to you, but you're uh, I'll let me just have
you guess one of them. Ohio State Southern Cow. You
want to guess that one? I would guess that Ohio
State that USC would be a point and a half favorite.
(29:08):
Oh boy, you're way off on that one. What is it?
Ohio State six and a half? Are you serious? Give
me some of Southern Cow? Huh? Yeah, man, that's easy money, right.
You know? Of course this Ohio State's disappointed they didn't
make it. They're not gonna want to play in this game.
They're not gonna be his up as Southern Cow. Oh
give me some Southern Cow. You gotta be kidding me
in that one? Oklahoma Georgia. Have you seen that line? Chris?
(29:31):
I would guess Georgia about a three point favorite, and
you'd be wrong. What is it? Uh? Pretty much? And
even though it's you know, you go to different casinos
arranges within a point Uh, pretty much, it's a pick
Georgia Oklahoma? Okay, all right, that's fair. Then what's the
Alabama Clemson. Clemson by about four and a half. No, no,
(29:52):
what what's wrong with you? You're talking about the best
team in the country in Alabama. Why would they be
another dog because Clemson's number one, right be the number
one team. That's gonna be the higher Uh, that that's
gonna have more action on it? Am I wrong? Alabama
opened up one and a half. It's already jumped up
to two in some of the casinos there. Wow, impressive.
Give me some Alabama. That's not too shabby, right there,
(30:14):
Give me some of them. They're gonna win it all.
Chris Thomas, I always are you gonna be the one
that said you're a blanking idiot? Is that to me?
I don't know. I was going in order here by
what we had, but I'm sure we'll get to I.
I did have this point though, brought up by Chris
who said Steve Kurr is listening to the show and said,
you forgot to mention the Warriors Calves trilogy. This is
(30:35):
about to Steve Kerr hotline for me. Please, yeah, make
sure it's open, guys, Tamas on Fox. You don't know,
don't do that. Maybe he's listening and he wants to
call in speak to his old putty Arny. How do
you know how long have you been asking for him
to call it since he's got the job, right, it's
been it's been a while. It's been a while. I
think all five years we've done this. The game was
(30:58):
a blessing in disguise for the Buckeye rights. Thomas. They
were not ready to be a top four team. A
large number of Buckeye fans feel this way better to
be in the Cotton Bowl than get destroyed in the
four team playoff by Clemson. No issue here, Thomas. I
love you. I appreciate you listening. You are so lying
to yourself right now, because I mean, I understand how
(31:21):
you want to paint this. But they haven't lost since
and since that game they've been unbelievable. So I I
like that you're trying to paint this. There's those different
levels of denial where it comes. I think reasoning is
in there, Thomas. I would put you in that reasoning
category because I have yet to hear from an Ohio
State fan that says, not a listen, we weren't good
(31:41):
enough to get into the four team playoff this year.
You would be the first one Uh. And then one
more quick one here before we break from Eddie Eddie rights. Oh,
you had the ugliest loss of the bunch. But Plank
gets to Crow tonight, at least for now. I would disagree.
I mean, I I think the Syracuse loss was the
worst loss. I agree with Yeah, I mean, you're you're
talking about a team that didn't win another game at
(32:05):
the Wait, Chris, did they taken the consideration that, uh,
didn't the quarterback get hurt in that game for Clemson
or No? They were already trailing whenever he went out
And if we're gonna well, what we're gonna play the
Wait a minute, they played an n C double a
basketball Chris, big time? But what does that mean? What? What?
What does that have to do with anything basketball and injuries? Uh?
(32:27):
To to the college football playoff, I could go through
the laundry list of six guys that missed the game
for Oklahoma against Iowa State. There were key players, including
the quarterback of their defense in the second half, so
everybody battles with injuries. Alabama has lost two starting linebackers.
I mean, and I think even more than that helped
me Outabama fan that I thought that would you know
(32:48):
when clips lost third quarterback and then their offense looks
so abysmal after that that it just you can't help
but have it stand out in front of you. Even
if you're looking for that, it stands out in front
of you. Chris Well, I understand it, but still go
beat a bad football team and you're not in that situation.
There's still the number one team right now. If we're
(33:08):
gonna argue about who has the worst loss, I just
I just disagree with this, and then let's get a
few more. These are really good, so keep the tweets
coming tonight at playing show at Stinking Genius one, is there? Really?
Is there? I mean, come on, Ohio State fan, this
isn't real right. This dude is not trying to sell
me that you just didn't think you were good enough
to get to the four team playoff. Why is Kirk
curb Street storming off the set that kids in I mean, yeah,
(33:30):
I was watching it. Why it's no big deal? Give
me a break, Chris, I gotta say something. Look, that's
being a hypocrite at dis pissed. Last night when I
was on the air his top four um, I thought
he had Ohio State of the top four tonight already
had Alabama number four, and I don't know what was
number which way he was going. It's really easy to
change your mind because it's so it's so subjective, you know,
(33:52):
it's really kind of what your gut says. And this
committee apparently met until almost one am last night, decided
to get some sleep, met Agan this morning, and made
their decision. All right, the college football four team playoff
has been a hot topic tonight. I'll try to steer
you back to the NFL when we come back at
eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox. Get in here
on a busy Fox Football Sunday. It's Arnie and Plank
(34:12):
on Fox Sports Radio. Great news. There's a quick way
you could save money. Switch to Geico. Go to Geico
dot com and in fifteen minutes you could say fifteen
percent or more on car insurance. Along with the stinking
genius Arnie Spanyo. I'm Chris Plank. I realized, Arnie, what
the what the F bomb? Was on our Twitter feed?
I think uh, I think our buddy Andre was fighting
(34:34):
with with a Seahawks fan, or maybe it was a
Viking fan. Forest rites. Hey, Arnie, the Eagles are now
one and one against teams with winning records. My vikings
are four and one against the teams with winning records.
Hashtag Eagles overrated, to which our buddy Andre replied, you
(34:55):
a bleeping idiot. So I thought that was to me
that I was a bleeping no. No, no, no, not
at all. Not. Yeah, we still have plenty of time
for that. Yeah. I like this. I like this time too.
From Mark, who hit us up send Hey, don't forget
my dogs lost their star quarterback on the first series
of the first game. Very true. No one remembers the
(35:15):
uh the name Jacob Ees who was going to be
the starting quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs this year until
he gets hurt and suddenly this jake from a true
freshman comes out of nowhere and has had an incredible season.
So yeah, and I don't know, do you agree with
with this? I think this is a compelling debate to
have And I don't know, maybe if if tonight's the
night to do it, and maybe this is something we
(35:38):
can go more in depth on is as the NFL
season heads down home stretch. But Jason hit us up
and he said, guys, college football is becoming NASCAR. Nobody
outside the Southeast will care anymore. With these playoffs, the
West and Midwest don't even get a chance. Do you
agree with that? You know, like I live here in
the Northeast. First of all, you don't have a big
(36:00):
college football. Guy, I love it. I've lived all over.
I've lived in the South. I lived in Atlanta, so
I lived in the hotbed of college football, especially SEC country,
especially Georgia Bulldogs. And I gotta tell you nobody, but
nobody cares about college football up here. I mean the
closest weird thing. Uh, people care about college football maybe
as Syracuse. Uh, a few fans there, maybe a Penn
(36:22):
State because of it's a proximity. You have a few
Notre Dame fans up here. I live on the border Vermont,
New York. But other than that, the Northeast, I mean,
even people in Massachusetts don't even care like about BC
or or any of the college football. It really is
not existed up here in the Northeast. I can't say
the same all over, but in the Northeast it's not. Yeah,
(36:43):
and then and then I like this from rtr Uh
appreciates Nick. I'd appreciate Nix on Twitter. He goes, well,
the Midwest and West could try actually scoring in the
playoffs when they get there. This is true, Uh, there
hasn't been much success. I mean Ohio State that we
could argue that's truly considered Midwest by some. I don't.
I again, I I accept, and I understand the college
(37:04):
football is very regionalized. And I'm not gonna sit here
and and bang the drum for Oklahoma for three hours tonight,
and I don't think the whole show will be dominated
by four team playoff talk. But you can't help but
notice the overall reaction throughout the day. Are he not
just on this radio station, but on local stations, on
(37:24):
on on Twitter, on Facebook, on every social media platform.
Even during the NFL shows, the talk has been, Wow,
can you believe Alabama got in over Ohio State? Was
it right? How wild was that? And it's just it's
kind of driven things today. So at least four one day. Uh,
the way in which the playoffs were decided has really
kind of seemed to drive the sports world. And that's
(37:47):
what they wanted from the beginning. You know, it wouldn't
have hurt it's not going to destroy it if we
had eight teams in this thing, we'd still have five
and the would be debate who would be the three
wild cards. I can't believe they didn't take this team
and they made it to the championship even though they lost,
you know they're there'd still be debate whether we went
from four to six to eight or whatever it is.
I still think we we gotta go to eight. But
(38:07):
I'm okay with what we got going right now. I'll
add I've I've been a big fan of the potential
of six where you go ahead and give the first
and second seas to buy why, I mean, why not?
I don't want bies. I don't I don't want anybody
getting good bye when everybody played the same number of games.
Why would you not reward then the one in two
(38:27):
seats because because we're voting on the number one and
number two seats are not getting it because they're based
on the record. If it was based on the record
like it is in the NFL, and they truly earned it,
then maybe I would agree with that. But I'm not
gonna let voters decide who gets bies and who doesn't
get bies. Well, you know, there there is a theory
out there that this really isn't about where they ranked
(38:50):
them from the perspective of the eye test. There are
some there are some I know. Heather Dennis has reported
on this. UH. A guy named Adam mc clinton at
Day Part two who's been on with US College Football Matrix,
is a big believer in this. He's of the opinion
that they have a formula and they rank them by
this computer formula and then they come up with this
(39:10):
BS excuse as to why they put them there. And
these two guys have kind of been working, Adam m
clintock and Dave Bartwo who has been on with us
a lot, to kind of crack the code a little bit.
And they've put out their rankings before and in fact
I was I was debating with one of them this
week and talking about the eye test and he blew
my mind. He goes, the eye test is a number.
They talked about the eye test. Football guys can talk
about the eye test and film work and oh watch
(39:32):
film when you see this and that, but really it's
it's margin of victory more than anything else with the
eye test for the committee members. So you know, there
is that conspiracy theory. But my just to defend myself,
my only reason for throwing six is this whole debate
about not trying to minimize and take away from the
regular season. Then you still have a reason why, Hey,
(39:53):
you're one in two seeds will get the Spies. So again,
I'm not sold on anything right now, Arnie. I think
it's very open ended. But if you're a Pack twelve,
I mean, if you're a big ten, you are pushing
big time this off season because what is this the
second straight you're the Pack twelve has been left out
and that's that's not what we gave him up with
the system. The system was supposed to be there, not
(40:14):
to leave out teams from the you know, from big
conferences like that. That's why you got to expand it
a little bit. I know there's five big conferences, only
four spots, so somebody was gonna be left out every year.
But this is not the way the system was supposed
to be working. Chris, I really believe you've got to
go ahead and get to eight otherwise and just still
gonna have the debate, just still gonna have a good time.
So I don't know why it would be a problem
(40:35):
eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven seven
nine six three six nine. You can hit us up
throughout the show. Twitter has been great tonight. He is
at Stinking Genius one s T I N K I
N Genius in the Number one I'm at Plank Show,
and everybody should be following us at Fox Sports Radio.
When we come back, we're heading to Vegas. Todd Firman
joined us to kick off next hour right here on
(40:56):
Fox our number two as we come to you alive
from the guy called Fox Sports Radio Studios. Fifteen minutes
could save you fifteen percent. Are more on car insurance.
Visit guy cooed dot com for a free rate quote.
Twitter has been hopping tonight. Jeez, it's been hopping. And Chris,
I want you to know something. Do we ever get
this type of Twitter debate in the NFL was it's
(41:17):
like a hot button issue like a Colin Kaepernick or
uh suspension or as grind could gonna get suspended? Have
we ever just gotten this type of Twitter response when
it just comes to two teams knowing other than a
super Bowl or something like that. Not at all, Not
at all. In fact, I would argue Arnie that it
we barely get this much on the super Bowl and
you and I've done the Super Bowl show for what
(41:39):
the last three years. It's insane, and we hit up
the Geyico Fox Sports Celebrity hotline a buddy Todd Firman,
who's been out in Vegas for several years now, co
founder of the Better Board podcast, also former oddsmaker at
Caesar's Fun. Follow at Todd Firman on Twitter. Pretty wild
day for college football to take center stage. I'll ask
the most obvious question first, Todd, in your opinion did
(41:59):
the did you get it right? So a power rating standpoint,
Alabama would have been about a four and a half
five point favorite against Ohio State on neutral field, so
I can't argue that in the least. However, if I'm
looking at a full body of work, I think Ohio
State had much bigger resume defining wins and Alabama could
compete with you look at Alabama. The reason I think
they ultimately get into Ohio status because they didn't have
(42:20):
that glaring blemish in Iowa City. But it also goes
back to a much different narrative, and I think it's
dangerous for college football as well. If Ohio State schedules
somebody not named Oklahoma and they get a win and
they're only losses against Iowa. Are we talking about Ohio
State being included instead of Alabama? I think we have
to be very careful about just looking at win loss
records to try and encourage a lot of these teams
(42:42):
to take on elite nonconference fols. You know, I just said,
Twitter's a pause. We don't get this type of reaction
maybe unless it's a Super Bowl or Colin Kaepernick or
never just based on teams. Do you ever see this
four team playoff ever getting to the level of a
super Bowl where I'm talking about bets and money and
all that, or is that just too far fatch? Yeah,
I don't think it's gonna quite ever reach that level,
(43:04):
just because a lot of these college players aren't household names,
So you're never going to get the same myriad of
prop offerings that you have for Super bowling. You don't
get the two weeks of build up quite the same way.
It's definitely increased in betting handle. I mean, it's well
documented that college football started to eat away at the
monopoly that the NFL has in sports books during the fall.
But at the same time, the Super Bowl is an
event unlike anything else and I think the college football
(43:25):
playoff has a long way to go to try and
rival that from a betting handled perspective, Todd, how much
of a challenge is it to put or is it
not to put together spreads whenever we're talking not just
about the four team playoffs, but then you look at
the whole bowl uh system, bowl formula, because you've got
coaches leaving, You've got now this new fat of players
that might not play because they don't want to affect
(43:47):
their draft stock. How much of a challenge can the
next few days be for oddsmakers? For the Marquee Bowl games,
it's relatively straightforward. You kind of use your baseline power
number and you combine that with a little bit of
public perception built into the numbers. And the two semi
finals we have this year, it's the closest games, at
least on paper and point spread wise, that we've had
in the history of the college football playoffs. So it'll
be interesting to see where these numbers go and ultimately
(44:09):
what happens with them. But you're exactly right, Chris, when
you talk about some of the other bowl games and
you worry about players that might not want to be
out there, or motivation and inspiration, et cetera. Oddsmakers hang numbers,
they'll take much larger limits closer to the games. And
that's where handicappers try and get an edge. They identify
the teams that may or may not want to be
in these games, how much they should value home field
advantage of the four teams that will be playing in
(44:30):
their home stadiums for the postseason. So with a much
different animal and element when you're handicapping post season games
at college football than the regular season. And that's why
I tell folks who have never done it before, if
you're preparing for your bullpools, do as much reading as
humanly possible to try and engage sentiment around a lot
of these programs that could be in turmoil re flux.
You know, talk when you when you making the lines,
obviously you want to look at injuries home or away
(44:52):
or is it a neutral site like some of these
ball games out there? How much is it worth when
you say, and that team doesn't want to be here,
So let's squen change the line by like a point,
like an Ohio State are thinking to be like, oh,
we don't even want to be here. We don't want
to play USC we got left out of the championship,
kind of like a team that doesn't get to the
n C Double A Tournament, they go to the n
I t and losing the front found how much do
(45:13):
you think like that and how much is that worth? Well?
Oddmakers won't do that for their numbers. They will they'll
allow handicappers to kind of tell them what they found
in some of their reading and research. But one game
in particular that I think you know is illustrates the
difference between setting a number for a bowl game versus
setting a number for a regular season game. If it
was played on neutral Auburn against Central Florida, all things
(45:34):
were being equal, and this was the third week in September,
And even if Central Florida we knew they came in
with all this fanfare, there is no chance that Auburn
would only be a single digit favorite in this particular game.
I think if Auburn wants to be there, this game
gets ugly, and it gets ugly in a hurry. But
the real question is do the Tigers even care knowing
you let an opportunity to get to the College football
playoffs slip through their fingers and on the flip side.
(45:55):
What Central Florida's coaching staff is gonna look like. Is
it led by Scott Frost? Is it led by somebody out?
How do the players feel? So that's one of the
games where I think you kind of throw out the
number to a certain extent and you figure out, Hey,
if both teams want to be there, Auburn cruises. If
Auburn doesn't want to be their Central Florida becomes a
live money line underdog. Todd Freman in the House Vegas
at Todd Freman on Twitter. Whether it's an odd way
(46:16):
just to say Vegas, but he is, He's Mr Vegas.
Have you seen over the last couple of years. I
know we're only four years in, but has betting has
the handle on the four team playoff? Is it at
the level? I know it's never gonna be Super Bowl level?
But it is it now one of those talked about
events where you want to put some money on it,
where people want to get involved. Is it? Is it
rising up the ranks a bit or is it still
(46:37):
have some work to do? It always is gonna have
some work to do, but it's definitely growing in popularity.
I think last year's games in the year before, when
they're played on New Year's Eve, it tempers a little
bit of the enthusiasm. But this year, when you look
at the way the schedule falls on Monday, January one,
you're gonna have a lot of folks that have spent
this Sunday nights out here partaking in a lot of
the adult activities that are offered throughout Las Vegas on
(46:58):
New Year's Eve, and they're gonna stumble down in the
and have a chance to bet both of these games
at two o'clock local kick for Georgia Oklahoma and of
course the five forty five kickoff from Atlanta between Alabama
Clemson with big brands and household names, this is going
to go a long, long way, and I think you're
gonna see all sorts of records broken because the casual
fan can wrap his head around. All I have to
do is pick the winner. It's a lot easier than
(47:19):
to try and navigate through Alabama taking on Washington where
they don't know exactly well. Alabama may win, but do
they win by thirteen points? Where does that number ultimately fall?
So I think straightforward, you're gonna have a lot of
polarizing teams out there, and folks may want a handicap
where they're just gonna bet against teams they on the
teams they like, or against teams they don't give me
some of the USC plus six and a half if
(47:39):
I if I bet that, now, do I have to
wait till the games over to cast that edge. I
think they're gonna win the game out right. I love
USC over oil stage, and it'll be interesting to see
what you get at a T n T stadium for
that game. But already, before you run to the window,
you want to make sure Sam Donald is definitely gonna
be a full go for USC, or do you worry
about him? Maybe saying you know what, I don't need
to play in a high profile bowl game because I
have my draft status. I need to protect woll WHOA.
(48:01):
I didn't know that yet. I'm not I'm not saying
that's going to happen. But those are the kind of
things when you bet bowl games early on in bowl
season you have to factor into the equation. I think
the one number that books are going to hold off
the board as long as possible will be the U
c l A Kansas State game. Knowing how much playing
at USC is meant to Sam Donald, I fully expecting
to be out there in a game of that magnitude.
(48:22):
I'm not so sure I feel the same way about
how Josh Rosen is going to approach the Cactus Bowl
on December twenty six at Chase Field and u c
l A takes on Kansas State Todd just as as
maybe a tip and education moment here. I know everyone
likes to have a little fun with the college football
season and have some action everywhere. You've gotta be selective here, right.
You can't lose your mind and just try to have
a little bit on everything because of how unpredictable these
(48:45):
games can be and the personnel. Yeah, it's definitely dangerous
when you have forty bowl games and you want to
have a vested financial interests in all of them. I
encourage people try and find an office pool or even
a lot of the prominent websites out there, whether it's
a Fox or some other sites. You know, get into
one of these confidence pools. It'll allows you to feel
like you have a reason uh to watch games between
North Texas and Troy to kick bull season off, and
(49:06):
the Texas Texas South Florida's of the world the same
way you do the big marquee games. But normally what
happens for professional betters they'll go through they'll try and
identify a lot of the stronger positions, and they'll differentiate
their betside. They may play larger amounts on games they
feel much more confident, and then other spots where they
think there's a little bit of value, they'll still dabble.
There's no right or wrong number. But I think if
you're gonna bet all forty games and expect to turn
(49:28):
a profit, you're fighting an upbill battle. I don't have
to turn a profit at all forty When a bet
now Alabama to be Clemson like the redheaded step child
that they should be, you know what, it's gonna be
very interesting to see how that number shakes out. I
think a lot of people will remember what they saw
last and that's been Clemson everything, a defensive juggernaut like
you saw during the regular season. But of course Alabama
(49:49):
should be able to get extremely healthy in the linebacking
corps and work out some of the kinks that we
saw late in the year that ultimately tripped them up
at Jordan Hair against Auburn plus for the first time
in a long time. Alabama is going to be able
to play with that chip on their shoulder, not only
with revenge against Clemson, but all the folks thing well,
maybe they weren't deserving of it, and I'm sure they've
been chomping at the bit to get out there since
(50:10):
that game in the Iron Bowl. With four and a
half to five weeks of extra prep time, you'd have
to imagine you get Alabama. It's absolute best. Todd Final
College question. I got a few NFL wants to throw
at you, But do you think they need to look
at expanding and how much play and run will that
get over the next few weeks now that the Big
Tin and Jim Delaney has been left out. I do think,
you know, as we look at how much money is
(50:30):
on the table for these games, that expansion is inevitable.
Now what number they elect to go to remains anybody's guest.
I've been you know, I don't want to say staunchly opposed,
but against an eight team playoff because I don't think
there are eight teams year and year out the deserve inclusion.
But I think a six team playoff would solve a
lot of those concerns. Because you could take the Power
conference champions and just say, hey, we're gonna simplify this down.
Whoever wins the five Power conferences are going to get in,
(50:52):
and we're gonna look to identify one wild card for
that six spot. Solves a lot of the issues we've
seen ultimately, how that would play out if you're talking
about bye weeks for the top two seeds, if the
teams that are playing would play close to the end
of the regular season. I think that's for powers that
be that are much smarter than me. But I think
the days of a four team playoff are clearly numbered. Todd.
Which is gonna have a bigger line movement Georgia Oklahoma
(51:14):
or Alabama or Clemson. I really don't think we're gonna
see massive movement on either games. I'd be really shocked,
Arnie if either of these pointspreads moved out to three.
We did see Georgia open uh as a three point
underdogg in some locations earlier today. That number really didn't last.
It's been one and a half to consensus out here.
You have some offshore books with Georgia now one point favorite,
and Clemson has gone from a pick um to Alabama
(51:36):
right now one and a half two points favorite, so
I'd be absolutely shocked if you've got all the way
to three. It'll be fascinating to see how the professionals
come down and how the general public decides to gravitate
towards betting these two contests. All right, Todd, I see
their record, I watched their defense. I'm impressed. But why
can't I buy in on Minnesota yet? Do you have
them in that category of potential Super Bowl contender? Are
(51:56):
you having a hard time buying in? I think anytime
you have a defense that's as stout as what we've
seen from the Vikings, you have to consider them very formidable.
And if the season ended today right now, they would
have home field advantage throughout, and that would include the
Super Bowl by virtue of the strength of opponent's schedule.
With the Eagles losing tonight to the Seahawks, I hope
people when you look at case Keenum, he doesn't really
(52:16):
leave you brimming with confidence, but you have to try
and remove some of what we've seen in the past.
Room he looked like a much different quarterback, whether that
Zimmer's leadership that's gotten him there or the combination of
having talented receivers any good running game to lean on.
This defense is as good as any in the league.
And as we saw today, when you have a corner
like Xavier Roads that can lock down some of the
best wide receivers, Minnesota is going to be a very
difficult out. And there's a reason guys that over the
(52:38):
last forty five games they're thirty two and thirteen against
the spread. You're not gonna find a team that's lining
people's pockets faster than that. Todd when when Kansas City
was five and one, how much can I get the
Charges to win the Division four back the well, you
know what, I don't even know what how the longest
shot the Chargers were then, I'm gonna ballpark it right
around forty or fifty two one. But going into Thanksgiving
week are you could have the Chargers at fifty to one.
(53:00):
Then before they went into Dallas beat the Cowboys in
Kansas City loses at home in the nine and a
half point favorite against Buffalo. I fully expect when odds
are rereleased tomorrow or Tuesday, we're gonna be talking about
the Chargers, the odds on favorite, and the game that
we'll have to pay close attention. Will be Los Angeles
trips to Arrowhead in a few short weeks that could
ultimately decide things. Almost feels like an elimination game coming
(53:21):
this weekend with Kansas City three and a half point favorite,
playing host to Oakland. We know the Raiders have not
exactly fared all that well at Arrowhead in general, especially
during the month of December, nor have they looked really
good this year either, But yet somehow here they are
at six and six. Great stuff is always tidle. We
appreciate your finding time for us to have a great
week man always a pleasure. Jens enjoy the weekend, and
(53:42):
Todd firm and love it. You seem surprised that he
doesn't think the lines are gonna move too much in
the playoff uh numbers right now? All right, you're a
little bit shocked by that, aren't you. You know, when
he was right, it's very rarely would get up to
that magic number three. A lot of money would have
to come down, and on one side, I don't think
it's gonna be so one side. And you know, when
the games are close to a pick up, you'll go
(54:02):
from plus one the minus one right there, to pick,
so they'll just take as much money as you can.
What he did throw me as I'd never even imagined,
and I should have because we had it last years.
As Sam Darnoldo Josh Rosenau say, I don't want to
play in the ball game. I'm gonna be the number
one or number two pick overall, so I'm gonna go
ahead and take it off. So I didn't even think
about that. It's become a trend, man, It's become an
(54:24):
absolute trend. Can't Yeah, I wouldn't want to risk any injuries.
Look what it did Jalen Smith and the years it's
taken him to recover. Now, all right, when we come
back to the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios, it's time
for my favorite part of the show. It's time for
crown him or crush him. He's already spanner. I'm Chris
Plank on a Fox Football Sunday Crowning or crashing coming
up here in moments, and yeah, we gotta come to
(54:46):
the defense of one of our fellow host was attacked,
his family was attacked. What one of ours? I missed this?
You didn't see that story? No, I did not. What happened? Well,
you know that Rob Ryan does a show on with
Willard on Sundays, Right, right, right? You heard what Gino
(55:06):
Smith said about Rex Ryan. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
you didn't. You didn't think about it. Now you're like,
who got attacked? What are you talking about? I was
like starting getting worried. I was like, what's going on? Yeah?
Geno Smith didn't have the couple bettery things to say
about his former coach, now did he? Yeah? And as
we play, But let me remind you that love has
an army, and you can join the fight. Help the
(55:27):
Salvation Army fight for those in need all over our
community this Christmas. You can go to Fox Sports Radio
dot com click on the red Kettle icon to donate,
or you can call eight three three Salve Join. That's
eight three three s A L j O I. And
here's what it sounded like whenever Gino Smith fired back
and Rex Ryan did see one of my ex coaches
(55:48):
say he didn't want me to be as quarterback and
that really upset me. You know, gotta we saved this job.
You know, we fought our ass off for both years
and for him to come out and say that just
shows you how much of cowardy is well, coach, he's talking. Wow, yeah,
there you go. Wow. I did want to thank Gino
Smith for playing today because it helped keep the Raiders
(56:09):
season alive in a lot of ways. I'm pretty sure
if he wasn't playing, or if they had defensive backs
that could catch, the Raiders would have won today. But hey,
I'll take six and six in a tie for first
place any day. Is that fair, by the way, you think,
for for Genie Smith to fire back like that on
it or not all? Is that something where you gotta
just let it slide. I mean, it seemed like it
was a fairly harmless comment that Rex Ryan made. I mean,
(56:33):
he wasn't breaking that way. He was just repeating what
was being set out there through reports, right, it wasn't.
It wasn't his report, though, What what do you mean
Rex Ryan's report? What Rex Rex Ryan basically said, I
like him as a person, but I I wouldn't want
him as my quarterback, was what Rex Ryan was saying. So, yeah,
you know, I don't know what he's getting all bent
(56:54):
out of shape for in the fact that he says
we saved his job, Well, how about you saved your
own job as you were playing so miserable. You don't.
I mean, here was the quote job, I love Geno Smith,
Rex Ryan said on Sunday NFL Countdown, which is just
an awful show. Uh, he said, great guy, I just
wouldn't want him playing quarterback for me. Ha ha ha, Gifa,
(57:14):
move on. I mean to me, if you're Geno Smith
and you're just getting an opportunity to become the starting
quarterback for the Giants and one of the things they're
trying to figure out about you is your maturity, don't
you let that go. Don't you just say, hey, you
know what, we lost the game today. I'm more concerned
about this game. Don't get me wrong, because I know
immediately someone will get it mad. Oh it's not supposed
(57:35):
to stick off. I love guys sticking up for himselves.
But in this instance, this seems like a Tuesday or
Wednesday conversation. This doesn't seem like something that you're responding
to right after the game. Right after the game, you
should be pissed that you lost. You shouldn't be thinking
about what a coach said on a pregame show that
I don't really think anyone watches or pays attention to anymore.
(57:55):
Except for Geno Smith. So my question is what was
he doing watching the pregame show? I don't know, maybe
that like one hour before game time? Is that what
you're doing one hour before game time? Really watching the
pregame shows? All right, let's get after it. Time to play. Crownhamer,
crush him. It's the games are done. Now, it's time
(58:16):
to crown him for crush shoo man. Some of y'all
have really utilized the two D and eight characters to
make I love it. It's great. We'll get to him
coming up here in just a bit. Crownamer, crush them.
It's our game of buy or sell hot or cold,
uh in or out, whatever term that every other hockey
radio show on the planet uses. We just have our
(58:38):
own little slant on it. We call it crown him
our crush No, no, no, yeah, absolutely absolutely all right?
Did the Crownamer crush him? The committee got it right,
putting Alabama in over Ohio state. Yeah, not only yes,
crowned him on that. They got the four teams right
and crown them on the order. I don't know if
(58:58):
that was a controversy or some people actual thought that
Oklahoma should be number one. I'm okay with Clemson one
U and of course Oklahoma, Georgia, Alabama. That's what I
thought it was gonna be. That's what it came out
to be. I went so sure that the committee was
gonna see it my way. But crown them. They got
the right four in the right order. Uh. And that's
why Ohio States fans are mad today. But I think
(59:20):
you gotta crown him on that. Actually, the uh, the
Ohio State fan we heard from is okay with him
not making the playoffs was what we heard earlier. O. No, No,
that was a wake up call. We weren't that good
when we lost to Iowa. Al Right, Uh, Crownamer, crush him, Arnie.
Alabama is actually the favorite to win the title. Actually,
I just saw the odds according to Vegas. That's true.
(59:42):
Crown them. I believe they're two to one. Clemson is
two and a half to one. Georgia and Oklahoma both
three to one, which is absolutely incredible that you know
the four teams are so bunched together. I mean, the
long shot is three to one, the favorite is two
to one, and you got clumps in it at two
(01:00:03):
and a half. So yeah, that's that's crown him. Alabama
is the favorite barely as you saw on the line,
but they are the favorite to win the whole thing,
and they're also favorite on the line. So crowning for that.
Vegas got that right, all right? I got one more, well,
actually two more college crownham er crush hims to get to.
Then we'll slide the Sagarin here and get back to
the NFL. Arnie Crownham or crush him my guy number six,
(01:00:25):
Baker Mayfield winning the Heisman next Saturday night. Oh, crown
him on that, wob agreeing with everything, Crown him on that. Also,
I don't know who else is they're gonna give it to.
I still think he's gonna lose out on some votes,
but he's gonna win it overall. I'm just curious to
see how many people are not gonna have how many
you get the vote for top three is? I want
to see if there's anybody that's gonna leave him out
of the top three in the ballot because they don't
(01:00:47):
like the way he acts off the field or something
like that, then that that that's pure bs. But he
should win the Heisman no matter what. Even if somebody
does decided to send the message like that, all right,
crown him or crush him. It's okay to sit out
a bowl game so you don't possibly affect your draft stop.
(01:01:07):
You know what? Can I read this treat real quick
from me? Roy, There's no way in hell I'd play
in any ball game if I was projected in the
NFL first round pick I don't know, or or number
one pick. Um, Gosh, I think I've got to crown
him on that one. Also, if you're gonna be the
number one pick overall, you know, Chris, here's the question.
If you think you're gonna be the number two pick overall,
(01:01:29):
like Sam Donald and Josh Rosen, do you play in
the ball game to try to elevate you to the
number one pick or does it even really make a difference?
Or if Cleveland has the number one pick these they
don't take me. I don't want to play in the
ball game because of you. I want to be the
number two pick, Um, so I overall, though, I can
see why you're gonna say I don't want to play
in this bowl game. I I've got too much at
(01:01:50):
steak and you know, my whole future is at stake here,
so I can't play in this game, especially because it's
a meaningless so I can see that also, Chris and
and I've gone back and forth on this because there
was a couple of guys, I think in the early
two thousands for Oklahoma State that decided that they weren't
going to play in a bowl game because they didn't
want to affect their draft stock. And you thought that's crazy.
(01:02:13):
And then the more you thought about it, you're like, well,
it is the Alamobile, and what are you really gaining
by playing? Sure, you love your brothers and you want
to you want to be all about that university and
they pay for your education, but damn any in the end,
more bad things than good can really truly happen to
your body by playing that extra game. Let me give
you a crown of our crush of all right, how
(01:02:34):
about Scott Frost staying at Central Florida for the ball game?
You know what crowned? I dig it. I think it's
kind of cool. I know you probably don't. You dig it,
You dig it age. You know. The only difference is
that you know, I hear people say, well, what about
the recruiting. You know this guy is gonna be coaching.
You would recruiting for another school. Um, let me tell
(01:02:56):
you something. Kids are not deciding between the PRASCA in
Central Ford. And that's the first thing to what Central
for to twelve and oh, you're gonna tell me we're
twelve and oh if we win, will have a perfect season.
Go thirteen and oh finished inside the top ten and
that's never gonna happen again in our lifetime. I'm gonna
keep things steady. I'm gonna keep the coach who's gonna
(01:03:17):
give us the best chance to win. I want to win,
go undefeated. That's the best recruiting you could have, saying
you win thirteen and all, you're one, your bowl game,
you went into the top ten, your loster, your coach,
to a big time program that would recruit itself. So
I think I would let it happen. And you know what,
I kind of dig this athletic director of Nebraska has
They got him from Bill Moose, they got him from
(01:03:38):
Washington State whenever. Yeah, and again I haven't followed him much.
I don't know much about him, but just in the
conversations he set up this whole welcome with former Nebraska
Cornhusker grates that were there to surprise Scott Frost. And
then when he was asked about hey, are you gonna
make him come start in Nebraska? Are you? Is he
gonna be allowed to coach in the bowl game? M
(01:04:00):
Moose said, how often do you get to go fourteen
and oh and finish an undefeated season? Let him go,
Let him finish it off. We we'll have a couple
of assistants here and we'll run the ship and everything's
gonna be okay. By the way, Scott Frost I didn't
realize this when he quit football. Did you know what
he immediately started to do, Arnie? When Scott Frost was
finished playing football, he didn't go straight into coaching. He
(01:04:21):
would dove, hunt and golf every single day, and he
did it for like a year. He had kind of
gone into semi retirement, and one of his old position
coaches said, hey, why don't you get into coaching, and
he took, all right, I'll try it out. And look
at him now, I mean, basically, the the dude was
either golfing or hunting every other day, was in semi
(01:04:42):
retirement at what maybe thirty years old, thirty two whatever
it was, and said I'll get into coaching. And now
he's the head coach in the Nebraska corn Husband incredible story,
all right, Crownamer crushing shifts to the NFL, and just
a bit but here the guy go Fox Sports Radio Studio,
Steve the Sager sliding in because we did have what
we thought was going to be in an incredibly competitive
Sunday night football game, barely a touchdown for Philadelphia. They
(01:05:04):
lost at Seattle. I must mention two things you guys
were talking, no wonder they lost. Scott Frost is the
guy I remember as the man who saved Legarrett Blunt's career,
because Scott Frost was the Oregon assistant coach that bear
hugged Blunt when he was going to go into the
crowd at Boise State after he had punched a Boise
(01:05:25):
State player. Right after the game, Blunt was suspended the
rest of the season and brought back for the Rose Bowl.
As I recall, at the end of that season, if
a former football player Frost and some other assistant coach
was trying it, it it wouldn't have worked. But a former
football player held him back and got him safely to
the locker room and in my opinion, saved his career. Also,
(01:05:48):
you talked about Bowl games. Josh Rosen for u c
l A, for example, he is going to the bowl
game as of now, and that was the story at
the end of the regular season. That was one of
his motivations to win the regular season finale and get
U c l A to the bowl game. Now they're
gonna be playing in Phoenix against Kansas State. And even
though they're got an interim coach and Chip Kelly's not
(01:06:08):
quite in yet. Josh Rosen, even though he was hurt
for the second half of the season finale, was a
full participant this past week in their two bowl practices. So,
just for the record, Seattle with the win over the
Eagles tonight was twenty four to ten. Carson Wentz did
finish with three hundred forty eight yards passing for Philly
one touchdown, but also one interception, sack three times and
(01:06:30):
one fumble. The Chargers and Raiders are tied with Kansas
City for first in the a f C West. All
six and six Chiefs have lost four in a row
now they lost thirty eight thirty one at the Jets.
Oakland beat the Giants. Meanwhile, seventeen and the Chargers have
now won six of eight. They beat winless Cleveland nineteen
to ten. New Orleans and the Rams each god wins.
New England won its eighth straight, Minnesota with a victory
(01:06:52):
Green Bay one in overtime, and Denver lost its eighth
in a row. Alabama was selected for the College Football Playoff.
It'll play Clemson in one semifinal earlier at the Rose Bowl.
The other semi will have Oklahoma facing Georgia. By the way,
Chris I did look up the Oklahoma schedule for next season.
They are opening against Lane Kiffin and Florida Atlantic and
the next week hosting Chip Kelly and U C. L A.
(01:07:16):
And that's a two game series, which means the next
year Oklahoma getta be back at the Rose Bowl for
a regular season game in nineteen. By the way, the
Georgia schedule for next year their nonconference Austin, p Middle Tennessee,
and then in November. UMSS there's your Southeastern Conference. Great
ratings for the college bowl games on Fox TV on
(01:07:38):
Saturday the conference championships in an early window. The Big
Twelve title game with Oklahoma got nearly six million viewers,
which is the largest audience for any Big Twelve matchup
in the last four years. Going back to the Bedlam
game of and then in primetime, big ratings for Ohio
State winning the Big Ten championship game about thirteen million viewers.
(01:07:59):
That means it'll go down as one of the highest
feud college games of the season. And as far as
rating points, that game last night with Ohio State nationally
a seven point three rating. In Columbus, Ohio, it was
a forty eight rating for that game. Wow Wow is right.
Ricky Fowler, the golf winner at the Bahamas tiger Woods,
tied for ninth place out of eighteen golfers. He finished
(01:08:22):
with a sixty eight today, eight under par for the
long weekend. Thank you very much, good board, good stuff,
good stuff to Seger. We're coming to you live tonight
from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios. It's easy to
say or more on car insurance with Geico, go to
Geico dot com. Are called eight hundred nine seven Auto.
The only hard part figuring out which weight is easier.
Coming up, the Sager is going to slide back in
(01:08:43):
here and we'll go more in depth on some of
the stories that we missed. Love to hear. The TV
ratings were up for all the conference championship games. All right, Arnie,
we haven't talked much in but yours was kind of
Let's be honest. Come on, I mean you and TC
you stop it? Yeah, So Bologni Purdue you're playing. Let
me tell you something. I'm so happy that we're not.
(01:09:03):
Arizona is not playing Bologni teams like Boise or Freends. No,
I'm not even really happy about playing Perdue because there's
such a lousy team. But at least during a good conference,
so I'll take uh. I'll enjoy beating the crap out
of them in our bowl game. Fifteen minutes could save
you fift or more on car in Trance visit ga
a con for a free bread? Coach? Did I get
that all into? And make sure I got all that in?
(01:09:24):
All right, Let's get back to crownham or crush him here.
Let's shift though to the NFL side of things, Arnie.
We watched Sunday Night football tonight. The Seahawks dominate the Eagles.
They went at to ten, So crown him or crush him, Arnie.
The Seahawks might be the favorite in the NFC right now.
Oh no, no, no, no, what are you talking about.
(01:09:45):
They're not even they're not better than the Rams. How
they're not even the best team in their own division.
So no, they're not the best team in the NFC.
And it's still gonna be Philadelphia. Mber. The game was
in Seattle, so you don't play that in front of
the home crowd. Let's see how that turns out. And
what about Minnesota. Oh no, no, no, no, don't don't
give me that below Seattle probably the fourth best team,
I would say in the NFC. So no, I'm gonna
(01:10:08):
crush on that one alright, alright, Crowdnamer crush him the Vikings,
then Arnie would be considered a super Bowl contender at Tinnitute.
This is more for me. This is more therapy for
me right here, because here's a team that has done
everything right all season long. I brought this up even
to Todd Furman. Uh they have not lost since they
were beaten by the Lions in a game that finished
(01:10:29):
a fourteen to seven And what was that was that?
Even like the third fourth week of the season. Uh
so they've done nothing but win. They've won eight straight games.
But yet for some reason, maybe it's case Keenum, maybe
it's I watched Lottavius Murray for the previous three years.
I don't know, I can't buy him, so so Crowdnamer
crush him, Arnie. The Vikings are legit Super Bowl contender.
(01:10:51):
Oh of course there legit Super Bowl CONTs, especially with
the defense that they have. Now, you gotta wonder what's
going to happen with the quarterback position. And there's obviously
out of competition there, but they're certainly right up there
with the Philadelphia's and with the Saints and and and
the Rams and you know, Seattle and stuff like that.
It's gonna be a good bunch with the four or five.
Let me ask you were crowing him a crush them
(01:11:14):
Minnesota Vikings good or bad for the Super Bowl? If
they make it that far. You tell me, oh, I
think it'd be good. Not because just because we've never
had it before, right, so it would be horrible. Well,
first of all, can you think how much of the
economy would be taken away from Minneapolis. You wouldn't need
(01:11:36):
all those hotel rooms because all the Minnesota fans are
already living up there, right so you know it's not
it's not like you're bringing fans in from another team.
I think hotels would be down unt the cars would
be down. I don't know so much about restaurants, but
maybe even downtown restaurants would be down if Minnesota made
it that far. And you know what, I will not
lie to you. I had not even thought of that.
(01:11:57):
Do you think that? I mean, that's what I look
in a way. Maybe if you're living there, you maybe
go out to more restaurants to enjoy the experience. Doesn't
mean you may go downtown. You may stay in your
own neighborhood. I don't see you getting hotel rooms though,
for like a week on end or anything like that.
I I still think hotel rooms would be filled to
the brim regardless, but I hadn't thought of it that way.
(01:12:17):
I might have to be on board with you on
that one. I don't know. I think it'd be fun
going there and seeing all the Viking fans all over
the place because they live there, But I don't know
economy wise if it would be good for the NFL.
All right, Chronomer crush him, AREN'TI? Rob Grin? And now
this will be because we've talked about this a little
bit earlier. I don't know if your opinion has changed,
(01:12:38):
but Chronomer crush him, Rob Gronkowski deserves a suspension for
his late hit that cost a concussion today. You know
you asked a different question than you asked earlier. Does
he deserve the suspension? Probably? He probably deserves a one
game suspension. Is he gonna get the suspension? The answers, No,
they're gonna find him fifty thou The last thing they
want to do is take that away from the Patriots,
(01:12:59):
especially when there's a big fight going on for that
home field advantage throughout the playoffs with the Pittsburgh Steers.
And look, I don't know how much of a different
difference projects going to make, but you don't want to
take him away from Brady. I gotta find him fifty
thousand instead of going ahead and missing a game. So no,
I don't think they're gonna suspend them. Should they? Perhaps
I think they should? Will they? The answers no, alright,
(01:13:19):
So Chronmer crush him. The Kansas City Chiefs need to
make a change at quarterback if they're going to win
the division. Gosh, no, they don't have to. I still
a matter of fact, I actually gonna picked up next
week because they play at home. So I don't think
they have to make a change, and you're putting it
all on Alex Smith when it doesn't need to be
all on Alex Smith. Though I can understand and see
(01:13:41):
them making a change, I don't think it's the right
move right now. I would stay with Alex Smith and
let it finish out the year. You got four games left,
go with what you got. I mean, he did get
to do a five and one record, so I'd probably
stick with him. Yeah, you know, that's a tough one
because he had a really good day. Yeah, I mean
he really did. But you're still losing game all right?
(01:14:03):
One more quick one to finally wrap this up, crowdamer,
crush them. The l A Chargers are now the favorites
in the a f C West. Oh, crown them on that, baby.
Yes they are not your Raiders, not the Kansas City Chiefs,
It's the l A Chargers. I mean they've won three
in a row. I could you imagine they should even
be better than that six and six record if they
didn't let some some of those games slip through their fingers.
(01:14:23):
Great three team battle. After after five six weeks of
the regular season, uh or it was Kansas City five
or one, the Raiders were like three games back and
the charges were something like that also, and man, I
was turned around in the last eight weeks. But yeah,
the charges are the favorite in that a f C West,
make no mistake about it. I'll crowded on that one,
all right. When we come back to the guy called
(01:14:45):
Fox Sports Radio Studios, what all have we missed when
we've been sitting here talking college football and NFL? Steve
de Seger has all the highlights next with Arnie and
Plank on a Fox Football Sunday. Great news, great news.
There's a quick way you could say money switched to Geico.
Go to Geico dot com and in fifteen minutes you
could say fifteen or more on car insurance to Sager
(01:15:07):
sliding in here in mirror moments a couple of quick tweets.
Let let me clarify one thing, because I did get
called on this when I said Scott Frost was dove
hunting and golfing. It was pheasant hunting. After he would
pheasant hunt and golf every day and he had retired
basically from the NFL whenever he was drawn back into
because is it all year long? And I knew that
(01:15:29):
I was going to call you out on that all
I I figured everyone would realize I was talking about
a season. Uh, and then I kind of I kind
of like this from Jonathan at Happy for Life seven
just came in. He goes, I'm a Chargers fan, but
the Chiefs schedule seems so much easier. Three straight home
games and at terrible Denver to finish the year. I
(01:15:51):
think they win the division by one game. Well, and again,
the schedule is not easy for the Raiders. The Raiders
have the most difficult schedule of those three teams because
they have the Chiefs next weekend in Kansas City. Then
you're home for Sunday Night Football against the Cowboys. Then
you're at Philadelphia on Christmas, and then you're at Los
Angeles for the Chargers on New Year's Eve. So that's
(01:16:15):
as difficult as it comes. And you know, last year's
a different stories. So they're not a good team this year.
San Diego on sorry, Los Angeles on the even even
the referee at the opening coin toss at San Diego today. Uh.
The Chargers have the Redskins next week and then they
go to Kansas City and that is a Saturday night game.
(01:16:38):
By the way. Mid December Chargers at Casey to the
New York Jets and then their home for the Oakland
Saturday games. Do we have in the NFL? Um they
have that full schedule of Saturday games right on Christmas Eve.
Hold on, I was just looking at this, in fact
a little bit earlier today. Well, we are getting the
Sundays on the last two Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve.
They're keeping the NFL Sundays. That's right, correct, But I'll
(01:17:02):
dig on this as we welcome in Steve di Sega.
With everything else, all you need to know with the
a f C West, Yes, there are three teams at
six and six right now. The Chiefs for the moment
have the tiebreaker, but they play the Raiders and Chargers,
the teams they're tied with this month still And in fact,
that Raiders game in l A to close that you
think there will be any Raiders fans in Los Angeles
to close out that regular season? Are there any Raiders
(01:17:24):
fans in Los Angeles? I wonder if we'll show up
for that game As we stand right now for the playoffs,
By the way, and we are in December, it's not
too early to look The Saints having beat now Carolina
twice this season Saints have a one game lead in
that division. The Saints would have a home playoff game
there for as of now, and the Rams are a
(01:17:45):
division leader, the Rams would have a home playoff game
at the Coliseum. However, the Rams are only a game
up on Seattle and they have to play at Seattle
in a couple of weeks. Next week it's Rams hosting
the Eagles and that will be a day game. Was
the lost time the Rams? How do you home playoff game?
Didn't they lose? Like Tampa nine nothing or something like that.
That was at Tampa for the NFC Championship game and
(01:18:06):
it was a win. It put them in the Super
Bowl with Vince Ferragamo. They won an NFC title game
nine nothing that they won that they had a home
playoff game, and uh in Anaheim it would be for Colosseum.
You'd have to go back to the nineteen seventies playoff
game they had. They had a game in the rain
against the Vikings in the seventies. Oh I was it
(01:18:26):
was yeah, because of all the mud they lost fourteen seven.
And why do I know that game? I remember as
a kid, I was sitting eating and McDonald's. This guy
next to me with my dad. The guy next to
me has a bunch of tickets for the game, and
I turned through like a smart out to go, Hey,
which two tickets on for me and my dad? And
he hands me two tickets and I remember it was
(01:18:49):
fourteen seven. Reward him fourteen seven. And I remember the
game to this day. Unbelievable that some great sports illustrated
photos from that playoff game. It was a mess, a quagmire.
Tomorrow night, it is the Pittsburgh Steelers, winners of sixth straight,
playing at Cincinnati, but Antonio Brown's a game time decision
with a toe injury. He has at least made the
(01:19:09):
trip Cincinnati's five and six, But did you know the
Bengals have yet to beat a team that currently has
a winning record. The bengals only wins this whole season
are two against Cleveland, one against slumping Denver recently, and
they've beaten the Colts and Buffalo. That's it, very much.
He's no Virgil Carter, that's for sure. By the way,
(01:19:31):
as I congratulated your Oklahoma suitors, Chris making the trip
to Pasadena, I did cover their only other Rose Bowl
Game appearance. It was a top ten matchup against coach
Mike Price in Washington State about a decade ago, and
the Sooners dominated that game. The only Rose Bowl appearance
for Georgia happened a year after Pearl Harbor, now the
(01:19:52):
Rose Bowl. That was just a few weeks after Pearl
Harbor had to be moved to the East Coast. They
played Duke was in the game. They just played the
Rose Bowl Duke instead of Pasadena because the Japanese had
just attacked, So the return of the Rose Bowl to
Pasadena after the ninety two seasons. Very few Georgia fans
could make the trip out west because of war travel restrictions,
(01:20:13):
so it's just a lot of local military people in
the big crowd. U c l A was in its
first Rose Bowl against Georgia. The Bruins had just beaten
sc for the first time. Georgia was number two in
the country, had the Heisman winner, and dominated and yet
it was zero zero fourth quarter and Georgia then blocked
a punt out of the end zone. It was to
nothing Georgia in the fourth and the final score was
(01:20:35):
Georgia nine nothing. And it's only Rose Bowl appearance one
year after Pearl Harbor. Second nine zero reference on the
show tonight, sem uh As as far as other NFL items,
Atlanta at home lost the game, scoring only nine points,
no touchdowns, three field goals. Lost in Minnesota fourteen to nine.
(01:20:58):
Matt Ryan without a touchdown pass for first time in
thirty games. Julio Jones only had two catches this year.
I don't know about that. Tom Brady beat Buffalo again,
his career record against the Bills twenty seven and three.
This breaks Brett Farve's record most wins by a QB
against one opponent. Farve had beaten the Lions twenty six times.
(01:21:18):
And another New England victory means they've won fourteen straight
road games, that second longest streak in NFL history, and
they now have ten wins double digit victories, a fifteen
straight season of double digit wins, second longest streak in history,
the record sixteen straight years. The Niners absolutely insane. Great
stuff to Sega when we come back to the Geico
(01:21:39):
Fox Sports Radio Studio, your calls at eight seven, seven
ninety nine on Fox, and tons of great Twitter reaction
to get to He's already spanier. I'm Chris Plank on
a Fox Football Sunday. Wow. Final hour, Final hour, is
we gonna be live from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios.
Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen or more on car
(01:21:59):
insurance of his gag who got dot com for a
free rate quote. At the bottom of the hour, we'll
take you through the locker rooms recap the sound of
the day. Beyond just Geno Smith calling out Rex Ryan,
there was much much more, you know. You know one
thing we didn't get into and chron him or crush
him is the reports that circulated out of New York,
Arnie about this being the end of the Ben McAdoo
(01:22:20):
era sooner rather than later. I know you've always kind
of been a believer in what goodness to do to
fire a guy now? But do you think maybe it's
time for the Giants to make a move or do
they let him finish the season? Do you think they
want to fire him now to take off the heat
from them because of the benching of Eli Manning, so
they feel they got so much bad publicity, they're like,
what the heck, We've got to make another move to
(01:22:40):
take Eli off the pages, off the back pages, and
let's fire the coach and that way every we'll be
back on our side. I don't know if that's true,
but they we're gonna let him go anyway, and you
know you're not gonna get anything accomplished whether him go now.
But it's such a poisonous situation. I think I'd have
to let him go and and just cut my ties
and start searching for a new coach for next year.
You know what. It's also a situation where I get
(01:23:03):
your theory has always been why why bring someone in?
You want a few games, you ruin your draft stocks.
But that's that's almost become so poisonous, if I can
use that term. I know that. Look San Francisco one
and just took the Giants got the number two pick
instead of having the three pick. And I know, and
you were asking about Saturday games for the NFL. In
(01:23:24):
Week sixteen, we get to Saturday games. Uh. In Week
fifteen we get two Saturday games. So we're getting a few.
But I don't know, it seems like over the last
few years already, I used to love as soon as
the college football season wrapped up, you'd always get about
four NFL games every year, maybe five on Saturday. So
I kind of digged it. We get that coming up
(01:23:45):
over the next couple of weeks Christmas Eve and New
Year's Eve Day. Uh, they'll be NFL football. No, not
New Year's Eve Day. That's the college weekend. It's the
sixteenth and twenty three December. There's Saturday NFL doubleheaders. And
I can add since Christmas Day is on a Monday
night December, they're gonna make that a double header. NBC
(01:24:06):
is gonna have a day game on Christmas with the
Steelers at Houston, and then there's the Monday night game
with the Raiders after that at Philadelphia. All right, and
here's the most important question of you don't have the
guts to try to ask for the day off before
the Sooners game on the do you know I'll be
I'll be in l a man. Just you gotta do
the show. Absolutely, we're not giving you the day off.
(01:24:30):
The party out there. Like Arnie gives people days off,
He's under this impression he has all the power here.
Not only does he give people days off, but I'm
not working in Oklahoma if it's not for Arnie, you know,
giving me an opportunity. This kid was working in Oklahoma
when we first started. I was on the air with
Chris A. Decade ago at Fox Sports Radio. Here before
(01:24:52):
you got by the way, Chris, you gotta mention once again,
people could win bets with their buddies. I'm sure nobody
commonly knows in this country A Oklahoma has played a
Rose Bowl game before, and be Georgia has played a
Rose Bowl game before. The reason for Georgia is it's
right before that Big Ten contract with the Rose Bowl
(01:25:14):
started in the nineteen forties. So if you go back,
Georgia had a Rose Bowl game Alabama, Tennessee as in fact,
the Big Ten before that Rose Bowl contract, the Big
Ten would not allow its teams to play in any
bowl game. Really, so that year that Georgia went, Ohio
State was number one and did not go to the
Rose Bowl because nobody in the Big Ten went to
(01:25:34):
a bowl game. And let's let's keep this in my two.
Not only has Oklahoma played in a Rose Bowl, I
think there was a really good Big Ten Pack twelve
matchup are packed tin at the time, matchup in another
bowl game that they may have actually wanted. Uh. But
Oklahoma and Georgia, of all the college blue blue bloods
out there, I know, Arni, you like to talk about
the Michigan's in the Ohio States, Oklahoma and Georgia have
(01:25:56):
never played. So while you have a truly g playing
out in the other four team playoff game, you have
two teams that have never played against each other in
one of the college football playoff How about Arizona Purdue,
Arnie that bowl matchup and they played each other. That
and ai A schools could play in ball games. I
was a little shocked by that. And Arnie had said
(01:26:20):
New Year's Eve Day, Yes, Arnie, there are football games
all day long on New Year's eve Day. As a
matter of fact, there's only four afternoon games. Well, they
can change that though, with the final week flex scheduling.
In fact, for all we know that final Sunday night
game could be Jacksonville at Tennessee to decide home field.
I know they might be left with that. But Dallas,
(01:26:43):
what's Dallas going to be by the final week of
this season? A lot of these teams that would usually
draw ratings, the matchups aren't there. I mean, Denver Kansas
City is the final week. Nobody's gonna be putting Denver
on primetime this year. I know we're into predictions on
this show, but on December of fourth. I I just
know this because I'm trying to make plans with the
(01:27:04):
h with Nick right to be there. So this is
gonna happen. On December four, the NBC Flex primetime game
will be the Raiders at the Chargers in the game
that will decide the a f C West mark it down,
put it in ink. It will be a nightmare for
me because it'll be on during this show. It will
be a primetime game in a soccer stadium with at
(01:27:24):
most fans, and they'll they'll all be in silver and black. Yeah, yeah, um,
all right, So Arnie, let's get to a couple of
NFL notes here from today. As I mentioned, we've got
all of our audio coming up. You got your picks
before we get out of here. Eight seven, seven ninety
nine on Fox. I ignore Twitter, and everything is so good.
I know we've been getting a lot shame that that
(01:27:47):
that's bad on me. But let's just hit a couple
of quick notes and we'll get to Twitter. Listen to
Big Story today. Obviously, the Rob Gronkowski late hit his
carried over. Bill Belichick apologized p f t S writing
articles tonight profit Ball Talk the website and p f
T commentator. But about the possibility that you could see
a a potential commentary, sorry, you could see a potential
(01:28:08):
suspension for Rob Gronkowski. I mean, I don't know if
he's gonna end up getting suspended. I'm kind of with you.
I think it's just gonna be a heavy fine. But
it will be interesting for someone who sits there and
flexes their muscle about players safety if they just let
this one slide already, that kind of that kind of
sense a bad message, doesn't it. It's fifty dollars letting
(01:28:28):
in a slide? Is that what you think? It's either
suspension or there's not enough money because he makes too much.
That will make it fifty grands pretty good? Fine, I
won't argue you get that fifty seventy five range. I
think you're talking about something that hurts and makes it.
I thought fifth, what's the cap? Is there a cap
on what you can find somebody or no? I have
(01:28:48):
no idea. I'm just saying that. I think a lot
of people feel like if you suspend a guy, then
you're sending a different message then if you're just finding him,
Because there's gotta be different caps for owners. As for players.
I mean, you could fine owners like a million dollars,
didn't they like with the with with craft and all that.
I don't think you can find a player that much money.
But I don't know. UM, I will say this much.
(01:29:09):
I think that this is gonna be one of those
stories that if they let it go, if they decide
to let it go, then you're gonna have a situation
to where you're really gonna get a lot of backlash.
I don't think so. I don't think so. I don't
think you'll get a big backlash on it because it
was a game nobody was paying attention to in the
twenty three or three game. It depends how hurt the
(01:29:29):
man he targeted is and if it's the concussion, is
gonna keep him out or anything like that. I was
paying attention. Are Buffalo Bills fan? Er? Uh? You really
think that it won't be a big deal if Rob
Gronkowski doesn't get fined or susmitted for that, I don't
think it's I don't think it's a big deal Bruin
right now. I don't think everybody's I think so many
people are wrapped around what's going on in college football.
(01:29:51):
Nobody's really paying attention to it, okay, uh, and then
a couple of things. You don't agree with me on
that one, huh. I think if they let Rob Gronkowsk
slide on this, I think it's gonna end up being
one of the biggest stories because of already the tense
nature of the way in which the NFL is covered.
I think that I I think that there'll be a
(01:30:11):
I think there'll be a racial component to it as well.
I think they'll be a component of a team getting
a break. I think there'll be a lot of different
issues in this involved if Rob Gronkowski slides without at
the very least a massive fine, and I think that
you'll see people losing their minds if he's not suspended. Well. Again,
this is also one of those things where I agree
(01:30:33):
with you on one point, Arnie. Outside of Eric, there
weren't a lot of people paying attention. There was another
I don't know how to say it on radio without
getting in trouble, but there was another device that was
thrown on the field by Bill's fans for the second
year in a row, by the New England Patriots. So
that gets funny, ha ha. So when you get around
all of that, you realize Grant basically tried to injure
(01:30:54):
a dude that was down on the ground. But but
there's a difference between trying to make a play and
purposely going down with the forum to a dude's backing.
Is that worse than targeting? Yes? Don't if you watched
the play? Do I need to send you this play?
(01:31:15):
I've seen it a hundred times. I just you you
think it's worse than targeting like a defenseless receiver or
something like that. Am I alone? Are we watching this?
Are we watching the same play for this game? A football?
I don't know? Are you talking about football, the man's sport? Okay,
I just gonna make this very clear. The play in
(01:31:35):
which there's a Buffalo bill player is laying on the
Groundkowski dives into him and there's a little forearms shiver. Yes,
I saw that, Artie. I think you need new glasses.
A little four arm guys, you know, outing out of
a mole hill. Okay, what he did was wrong. It
(01:31:56):
was a little bit of a cheap shop and I hey,
breaking news. Cheap shots go on in football. When's the
last time somebody got suspended in the NFL for a
cheap shot for a cheap the coach apologized to the
opposing coach for it. Is how bad it was. Bill
Belichick had to break character and tell an opposing coach
(01:32:16):
that he was sorry for it. I listen, I did football,
and I did contact more than anyone else. But there's
also bush league things here. Here was groc afterwards his
apology for it. You just want to apologize to Davious White. Um,
I don't don't, don't don't really believe any type of
shots like that. But just do the frustration process, game
(01:32:38):
flootball emotions. Just just what happened. All right? There you go,
there's your apology that it shouldn't have a punishment. Then
that all right, I've realized what's happened. You've You've been
up around New England too long, aren't and not one
of them? You are now one of them. You are
walking around saying one of us, one of us. Take
(01:32:59):
that back. You've been brainwashed. That's the only If this
was anyone else, I think that you'd be your your
brainwashed now. And then the other story tonight, I guess
would be how Seattle took care of business against Philadelphia.
Now I'm trying to catapult Seattle as a team to
a level that no one else is on board with me.
So let me dial it back from that perspective, Arnie,
(01:33:22):
did we see Russell Wilson potentially take a lead in
any m VP debates right now? Drew Brees has got
to be in this mix, right I think Cameron, I
think Carson Wentz is still in this debate for potential
m VP. I don't usually care too much about this.
I do think it's kind of compelling though, in the
NFC this year. Yeah, you know, I you can't go
wrong with any of the guys you've mentioned. I'm really
(01:33:44):
not into the m v P like a I'm into
the Heisman and stuff like that, an individual awards. I
guess if I had to cast my vote, I can't
go by what today's game showed you, but it probably
would have been Carson Wentz. I figure he probably is
the best throughout the rest of the year, but I
guess that's the way my vote would probab we Go.
Apparently Vontes Birthlet got fined one point four mill uh
(01:34:05):
what is illegal? Hit? Of course, that might be the
accumulation of his finds. That dude is rap, that doesn't
sound right, that seems like a lot of money. And then,
of course the other this is of course the always
reliable Twitter helping us out on this New Year's Eve Day.
It's just New Year's Day, now, listen, literal people I
hate sometimes I love New Year's eve Day. There's those
(01:34:31):
such things that I hate when people are in this.
This dude is probably getting hot while he's driving around.
So what do I call the day? Then that's before
New Year's Can I not say New Year's eve Day? Yeah?
What happens if it's like noon on the day before
New Year's it's not New Year's Night yet, so New
Year's Eve Day. I love how people are. I'm sorry
(01:34:55):
that is factually incorrect. I have my dictionary right now. Bros.
Sports Radio, just work to use different words and make
s up a lot. If to use that phrase, I'm
going to patent that and come up with Hallmark cards
and sell them money. And by the way, one other quick,
NFL no, because I all of y'all want to get
back to college football, and we'll get back to college football.
(01:35:16):
Has there been a less talked about? And I tried
to lead the show with us about five weeks ago
and almost got laughed off the year. But has there
been a less talked about race in the NFL this season?
What's going on in the a f C South, usually mocked,
usually laughed at. But Arnie, you got two eight and
four teams and the Titans and the Jaguars. Are we
missing out on fun? Or is this just two teams
(01:35:38):
that will be eliminated in the first round regardless? Quit
wasting our time. Yeah, I see that the right in four.
I'm gonna have to double check that. I thought that
was a mistake, So I'm not sure that's gonna You
know what's interesting. I don't know this to be fact,
but I'll say it as a fact because I don't
think anybody's gonna prove me wrong. I've never seen the
D eight in four team that's been minus in points
four points against differential, their minus six and they're rating four.
(01:36:01):
I've never seen anything like that before compared with Jaguars
or plus what what he wants? So, I mean, you
do the meth on that. It's crazy you could be
eight and four and still be in the minus. It's
still amazing to me too. Whenever I look at the
bottom of that division and I see the Colts, and
I get it that Andrew Luck is out, but it's
it's amazing to me to think that two years ago
this was a franchise that was on the rise and
(01:36:23):
everyone needs to be what Indianapolis is and what they're doing.
And now they're six games under five hundred. They had
already fired that general manager and they're an absolute mess.
So go figure We'll take a time. Go figure it.
By the way, Andrew Luck isn't coming to save you
because he's not that great of a quarterback like you
all think he is. When we come back to the
guy called Fox Sports Radio Studios, we'll get into some
(01:36:44):
Twitter fights and we've got some audio coming your way
from the locker rooms and the play by play moments
of the big place here in the NFL. He's already spanninger.
I'm Chris Planket's arend and plank on a Fox Football
Sunday love having on And you can join the fight.
Helped the Salvation Army fight for those Christmas by going
to Fox Sports Radio dot com and clicking the red
(01:37:04):
Kettle icon to donate, or you can call eight three
three sal Join that's eight three three sal joint Seahawks
win Saturday Night football. Ten Herm Edwards is the new
Arizona State coach and the four team playoff is set.
Bama's in Ohio State is out. It'll be Oklahoma Georgia
in the two three matchup in Pasadena. The one four
(01:37:27):
is the trilogy, the third matchup between Alabama and Clemson,
with Clemson being the one seed. Boy, Gator hayter Bammer
bashers just ripping you on Twitter? Huh, I love well.
I think you were the one that was just crushing Tennessee.
But that's fine. Uh. Gator hater Bama basher writes, I
love how everyone kisses the ass of the Seahawks but
talks s about the Titans that punched them in the mouth.
(01:37:50):
Damn boot liquors. Okay, I don't know what that means.
Is that dirty? Should I not have said that? I
don't know, but I'm not. Nobody's kissing Seattle's back, so
I'd stop that. I'mout. In fact, I didn't even like today.
I thought the Injurines were gonna catch up to him,
So I'm actually surprised they got to win that like that,
end that easily. Um, I'm I'm I like him. I mean,
I don't know how they're doing this right now. Bobby
Wagner looked like the best player on the field by far.
(01:38:13):
And I get it that they're at home, so they're
a different team on the road than they were at home.
But yeah, I'm sorry, Gator Hayter Bama Basher Tennessee is
a better is not a better team than Seattle? Uh.
Jared writes, the takes are so hot, gronk love tap. Listen, Jared,
If that happened to any of your beloved Husky players,
(01:38:34):
you'd be on here crying like a for a suspension.
If that happened to Russell Wilson, Seattle fans would be
losing their minds. If that happened at Tom Braid, if
this was a hit on a quarterback, would it be different? Oh,
he'd be in an electric chair, right, Are you kidding me?
If life would be over? I like this. Arnie has
(01:38:57):
lost his mind. That was a cheap shot, and it's
cheap as they come. Two games of spension. That's from
at Pilgrim Bruce. Oh gosh, there's so many, so many
good things. Pam right, stick a fork in the Chiefs.
They are done. The last home game they played they
didn't win. Who's to say they win three more? The
only hope we have is the last game with the Broncos.
(01:39:19):
That's counting on that one either. Boys, have you noticed
we had a chief fan after like week four? I
was the only one. Well, okay, there was a guy
beyond you that we would hear from every single week,
just making fun of everything Raiders and how great the
Chiefs are. I haven't heard from him in a couple
(01:39:40):
of weeks. You notice it happens. Yeah, that's what happens
whenever you lose to the Jets on the road. Uh.
There's a couple of really good things on here. I
like this from Rod, who writes U c l a
Is playing Oklahoma next year. I'll bet you the dinner
that Arnie owes me U c l A wins, you
have a better chance to collect than I do. Do
(01:40:00):
you still Bakersfield, Rod? Money or at least a meal? Arnie?
I don't know. If it wasn't from like five years ago,
he's gotta be from a long time ago. I don't
remember that. Okay, before you get to the college stuff.
Two more wins by the paths over the bills, and
they were still passed and or surpassed the number of
times the road runner outsmarted wildly. Talk about a team,
(01:40:24):
good stuff, Eddie. Talk about a team that has the
absolute number of another franchise, My goodness, the New England Patriots.
All right, let's go back to college football here, Russell writes,
I'm not a Buckeye fan, but I would say the
entire SEC also does its fair share of whining and cry.
Oh absolutely, could you imagine what tonight would have been like,
(01:40:45):
Arnie if it was Alabama left out instead of Ohio State.
Could you imagine what that would have been like from
Alabama fan? Even though I remember whenever we had what
Ryan on last week, Ryan Fowler, he wasn't too in tune,
not Alabama having a chance. But I'll tell you this much,
things tend to change whenever you're right there on the
cusp of getting an opportunity. I would have a lot
(01:41:07):
more respect for all about them if they said, you
know what, here's your million dollars, you want to buy
out that Citadel game and reschedule it or something like that. Yeah,
this is from Calbert ever, buddy, at that damn bear.
He writes, Artie, Boise State a crappy team, that same
Boise State team that beat Arizona the Fiesta ball stop it.
We had no reason to play that game. We were
so disappointed by now winning the Pack twelfth championship. Uh,
(01:41:29):
we were just there was no reason to play that game.
And I always hate playing, you know, teams from the
garbage conferences, so that wouldn't happy about that one either either.
They're Chris all right, learoy stud hit us up with this.
I think Ohio State fans think the rules don't apply
to them as far as losses in playoffs. They're always
whining and crying about something. I hate them. Uh. I
(01:41:50):
tend to like a couple of the Ohio State fans
I know. David writes the possibility of an eight team
college playoff would have two games on Friday and two
games on Saturday. Hey, let Tyson. I get it that
Saturdays during the season are supposed to be for for
college football, but man, I really dug that Pack twelve
championship game on Friday night. I gotta admit I was
(01:42:11):
a little bit jealous that we didn't have maybe, say,
a Big twelve championship game on Friday night. I know
that they're both on Fox. That would make it kind
of difficult. But man, if if I think you put
two of them on Friday night, then you give the
American or Conference US areah, whatever that early morning slot,
because it just didn't seem to make much sense to
have an eleven thirties start. I loved the Friday night
(01:42:33):
game with USC. I don't like it. I don't like
it at all. I mean, it depends on what time
you're gonna start on the East Coast, but I'm I'm
not a big fan of that. If we're gonna do
it and have these championships, let's put on Saturday where
we can concentrate and zero win on it and build
up the suspense and the pre game. I don't like
it on a Friday night. I guess maybe for me
it's just trying to get another day off or something
(01:42:55):
I'm trying to throw in there. Mark has a very
intense theory. He hit us up at Mark st. Jean
on Twitter. He said, how about a top ten playoffs?
You have one and to get a buy uh three ten, four, nine, five,
eight six seven second round, you give the one and
two seeds a home game versus the lowest ranked seeds
and the other two at the Fiesta and Orange third round,
Rose and Sugar. That the championship location is rotated every
(01:43:19):
single year. Basically, what he's throwing out there is the
plan you have now, only you add six more teams
and you put in a couple of buys and Arnie.
As we've learned, you're not a fan of buys in
college football. I'm not a fan of buyas. But I'm
really not a fan of neutral site games either. If
it was up to me, I'd go with the home
and home. I'm not even a fan of the Oklahoma Texas, uh,
you know, being a neutral site game. Also, let's go ahead,
(01:43:42):
have home and home and that's the way. And a
matter of fact, if we had a playoff, one to
three and four seeds all get the home field while five, six, seven,
eight after travel. Everyone's got their theory here a buddy,
David Rogers at King David Wrights. Eight teams is the
only way I see to give the power five conferences
and three yet large teams a chance to play the
(01:44:02):
master rights. When Alabama was five in the poll last week,
it was obvious that one of the top four went
down that the tide would be. And here's the thing,
this is what I've learned master is what happens in
that final regular regular season poll is completely and totally
irrelevant towards the last poll. Just ask TCU, you know
it doesn't matter where you are. It doesn't matter where
(01:44:24):
you are, uh that you can get dropped three spots
for no reason or get an increase for three spots
if you look good. It's just it's irrelevant. And then
one more quick one here before we get to the
to what's going on with Steve Seger. I gotta have
an eight team playoff that way, writes Mr west Ashley,
You get the Cinderella team in and maybe get more
(01:44:45):
national interest if a team gets in from the Northeast.
Is it necessary to be a little bit more diverse regionally?
Aren't to continue the success from the northeast? Is he
talking about there's only Syracuse where we're gonna wait for
Boston College. It's about walking through that door. So what
are you talking about. There's not gonna be some magical run.
(01:45:07):
There's not gonna be some magic from Rutgers. I mean,
I just I don't see where that Northeast team would
be maybe he means Notre Dame since everybody claims them.
All Right, let's let's get to say. You're in here
on the g in the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios
to catch us up on what we're missing out on
what's going on a lot of NFL to get to.
First off, we mentioned the NFL starting mid December, they're
gonna have a couple of Saturday doubleheaders that includes a
(01:45:30):
Saturday night Chargers at Kansas City game December sixteen. That
day is the first day of the college football bowl season.
There will be six bowl games on that first day,
but I would be interested in the ratings going up
against an NFL double hair. It's garbage games the first day,
except for the Las Vegas Bowl boys. He stayed against
(01:45:50):
Oregon that first day, but in that one, I'm just
so happy. You know, Buffalo was Bowl eligible, did not
get picked today. Western Michigan and ut Sand and Tony
also Bowl eligible, but did not get picked for any
of them. We were not screaming about that, like we're
doing basketball. Yeah, I don't hear any I waited, I listened.
I'm not hearing any screens. Seattle ended Philadelphia's nine game
(01:46:15):
winning streak. Russell Wilson three touchdown passes Seahawks the final
Nelson Aghaloor in the loss seven receptions, a hundred forty
one yards and a touchdown. The Rams defense had six sacks.
They wanted Arizona thirty two to sixteen. Today, the Rams
host the Eagles next Sunday, and then l A's at
Seattle the next week that might decide the division and
(01:46:36):
a home playoff game. New Orleans is sitting on a
home playoff game right now. The Saints now lead the
NFC South by one game over the Panthers. They've beaten
Carolina twice. Today it was thirty one to one. Alvin Camara, Wow,
has he had a great season and he's only a rookie.
He's over six hundred receiving yards and over six hundred
rushing yards. Now. The only rookies in history that had
(01:46:57):
over six hundred in each of those categories Billy Sims
rookie year nineteen eighty and Charlie Taylor nineteen sixty four.
And when you consider that they already have a Heisman
winner in the backfield. The Ingram camera matchup. This is
the fifth straight game now they've totaled two hundred yards
from scrimmage combined. Impressive. Also impressive, Keenan Allen are the Chargers.
(01:47:20):
L A has won six of its last eight. They
beat winless Cleveland nineteen to ten today in l A. Allen,
in three straight games has dominated. He is the first
player in NFL history two for three straight games have
ten catches, hundred yards and at least one touchdown as well.
Oakland one Kansas City lost its fourth straight. Denver lost
its eighth in a row. New England won it's eighth
(01:47:42):
straight the late NBA game to Houston, which is won
seven in a row. Rockets beat the Lakers in l
A one eight nine five. James Harden thirty six points,
nine assists. Oklahoma City now ten and twelve after beating
the Spurs seven. Russell Westbrook a triple double wins for Minnesota,
Orlando and for Golden State, which is eighteen and six.
And finally, on the golf, Ricky Fowler, the winner at
(01:48:03):
the Bahamas tiger Woods type for ninth place out of eighteen.
I'll take it illy. He finished, he finished his round
that and that's three good rounds too. Such minimal levels
that I need from Tiger Woods to get me excited
about golf again. We are coming to you live tonight
from the Geico Fox Sports radio studios. It's easy to
say or more on car insurance with Geico, go to
(01:48:26):
Geico dot com or call seven Auto. The only hard
part figuring out which way is easier to me? If
that had to hit bike Ronkowski was so egregious, how
come nobody on the Buffalo Bills went over and knocked
that guy's head off and and then make a big
stink and start a fight over that because they didn't
want to cost themselves anymore field position. Then come on,
stop it now they were getting cooperataty by the time.
(01:48:47):
What was the score at that time? I think it
was already well my my My point is, just if
you're a league that wants to try to sell yourself
on player safety and something like that happens, I know,
no big deal, just football and Arnie Spaniers book. I
think if I think that's insanity, to be honest with you,
I mean, that was just as that's as cheap of
a shot as you've caught. O Oh, here you're the
(01:49:09):
one all riled up about it. If Buffalo fans Buffalo.
The Buffalo Bills didn't do anything about it. Okay, well,
I'll just you know what, I'll be the one because
you're a freaking hypocrite if you're the NFL and you
let that cat get away with that. Let me get
one more tweeting here before we get some audio. This
was from Carl, and Carl brings up a point that
I hear Steve Hartman made quite a bit right here
(01:49:30):
on Fox Sports Radio. He writes, you have to remember
the contracts that the SEC has with two of the
three major media networks, and that comes into play when
we're talking rankings and playoffs. It's about money. Hashtag college
football playoff. Carl, I would be more than happy to
agree with you. But the Big ten has those same contracts,
(01:49:50):
you know, So you're you're you're talking about a situation
to where there's not somebody who's gonna be left out
because of the contracts with networks because everyone has their deals. Now,
does the TV networks have a say in this? I mean, honestly,
I would hope not. And if they did, would they
really want Alabama over Ohio State? I don't know, but
(01:50:13):
they have big money deals with a Big ten as
well to Chris, didn't we know this, what's going to happen?
When Alabama was placed at number five? Again, I don't
think those rankings matter the week before, I really don't.
I think they. I think they picked the top four,
then throw a start at the board and whenever it
comes to five, six and seven. Sometimes and I honestly
(01:50:33):
thinking that final ranking, who was it? Uh Alabama five?
Who was at six? Ohio State was a high State
was at nine, So Alabama was at five, Miami was
in there, and what someone else was in there maybe
should even be in the top fifteen. They make me sick. Well,
my my thought was that they just basically put five,
six and set. Oh Georgia, Georgia, thank you, so five
(01:50:55):
six and seven. I think they just kind of grouped
them together and they could have been in any order.
So I I kind of thought they'd give more just
because of the curmudgeon nature of some of the guys
on that on that group would have would have gone
more with the playoff or excuse me, the conference winners. Yeah,
that kind of that old school mindset a little bit.
Was I surprised at it was bam and No, not
at all. And I don't think honestly, I don't think
(01:51:17):
that Nick Saban was surprised either, because here's what he
had to say about his team's chances of getting in
and how he kind of believed they had an opportunity.
I certainly believed and trusted in the integrity of the
committee that they would do their very best to put
the best teams in. I really do believe that, based
on a total body of work, that our team really
deserved the opportunity to be in, and we're very pleased
(01:51:39):
and happy that they did. Uh, what does that mean
if they didn't put him in? They have no integrity.
I think that's kind of what he's doing because I thought, I, look,
I knew that they would have the integrity, and well,
what does that mean if you don't get in, they
have no integrity. I don't understand that. It's crazy. On
the other side of it, Kirby ho Cut, who was
(01:51:59):
the committee chairman, the selection committee just favored Alabama's full
body of work over that of Ohio State, and it
was consistent over the course of the year as we
saw Alabama play weekend and week out. When we start
with a clean sheet of paper each and every week
that the selection committee believed that Alabama was the better
football team? Does that? Why are they telling us what happened?
(01:52:23):
What does it matter what happened in the week one, five, six, seven, eight.
I I don't understand that that. Did that have something
to do with the final rankings? I don't understand that.
And then here was urban Meyer. More than this is
a march madness. This is for you wake up in
the morning now and that season starts. You're on the clock,
and how should they do? It? Was a question? I
(01:52:43):
don't know. I thought he had cost whenever I first
heard that. Yeah, I know, I thought he said how
s he was the question whenever he first asked, whenever
he first laid that out. But you can tell. I mean,
you're in a situation where you Base Sickley had just
had your knees taken out from underneath you, and then
you've got to go sit in front of the cameras.
(01:53:05):
Maybe urban Meyer knew, maybe someone had clued him in,
but you'd have to think his athletic director was in
that room, right you You I know he has to
recuse himself, but you would think we've got our a
d in there, We've got a strong voice. Even when
these guys break out, you know, it's not like they
don't talk about it. So you know that had to
be a gut punch for Ohio State. Right. Why why
(01:53:26):
do we not get the final vote bother? Why is
that a big secret? Why are we That's like you
taking a class and at the end of the year,
I tell you what your letter grade is, but I
don't tell you how you did on any of the test.
You just got to go ahead and take my word
for it. What gotta blow is that it's ridiculous and
it's this whole life that they want one voice from
(01:53:47):
everything that I've come to understand about this process, they
want one voice and they want to make it seem
like they're unified. We'll listen, no one can be unified
on anything. You could take five people that are the
exact same mindset and the exact same fan base and
you put them in a room. They're all gonna come
out with different opinions. So you know, there's debate. That's
(01:54:09):
part of the fun. I wish they would let more
people talk. I wish we would get an idea of
how close that balloting was, What was the final difference maker. No,
I don't want to hear it from you, Kirby Hokutt.
I want to hear it from Gene Smith. I want
to hear it from Barry Offers. I want to hear
it from people that actually, you know, might be able
to give us more perspective than just one guy's mind.
(01:54:30):
You know, who do you really think should be on
this committee? Because I gotta tell you something, I'm not
so sure athletic directors and or coaches or stuff like that,
or or you know, s I d s should be
on these you know, especially athletic directors. I really believe
you should have some like radio talk show host. What
better way than to have the somebody speak on behalf
(01:54:51):
of the fans. They're like somebody you and I, Chris,
where we take calls from people at Alabama fans Ohio
state five. Can you imagine if I told you you
and I are on the committee and the day before
the selection process we took calls and listen to people
make their case for al Ababan Ohio's they which could
influence us. I still think the best way to do
(01:55:12):
it is to go like a politician, and Urban Meyer
and Nick Saban are out there like whenever Trump and
Clinton and we're going at it, and you had uh
who was the dude in the red sweater? And you
basically have them in a town sweater, and and you
have Nick Saban on the chair, and you got Urban
(01:55:32):
Meyer on a chair, and you got a moderator, and
they both state their cases. Then when they're done, we
put it to the public and we let everyone vote
on it. There you do like Barrius got talented. If
you don't like it, you you hit the button. It
puts a big red all right. When we come back
to the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios, it is time
for our most popular second. Arnie's picks are next. Arnie
(01:55:56):
and Plank on a Fox Football Sunday final segment from
the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios. Reminder, there's great news.
There's a quick way you could save money. Switched to Geico.
You can go to getco dot com and in fifteen
minutes you could say fift or more on car insurance.
Big Ben Mallor is coming up next, though there's controversy
(01:56:18):
he did not invite you again to his uh ugly
sweater party. Fifth year in a row, Fifth year in
a row, Danny g was there, had a nice ride
up about it. I mean, there's there's dudes that used
to work with us that are there. No Spaniard, what's
up with that? And I've been out in l He's
had the bad sweater party. He still hasn't invited me.
That's heart breaking, man, Big Ben Coming up next again
(01:56:40):
the continent planning of the Rams Super Bowl Championship parade
coming up here in mirror moments on many of these
same Fox Sports Radio affiliates now. Also a reminder, if
you missed any part of our show tonight, from Todd
Ferman to Arnie basically being brainwashed by Patriot fans, you
can find us on iTunes. Search Fox Sports Radio Weekends
(01:57:00):
and boom there we are downloaded. However you consume podcast,
if it's through your iPad, if it's through your your iPhone,
whatever it might be, We're on iTunes now, so give
us a listen. And again, the big stories tonight, the
fact that Ohio State got left out. Alabama's in Gronk.
We'll see what kind of penalty he might face. And
(01:57:21):
I don't know if we've spent enough time Arnie talking
about what the Saints did today that was pretty impressive.
I don't want to say they have a stranglehold on
the NFC South right now, because Caroline is still there.
Atlanta's not too far off. That's ended up being one
hell of a division this year, No, it has. I'm
a little surprised about it. I didn't think it was
gonna be that dominating, and I'm surprised the Saints rebounded
from there. What was it? Noah two starts, so I
(01:57:41):
kind of written him off at that point also, so
they are great turnaround by the Saints. And if we
have time, If we have time, we've got to get
into your boy, Adam Gaze and his late on side. KI.
Of course you do, all right, it's time though now
for Arnie's sure sure to be right there, guaranteed every
(01:58:03):
single week, taken away stinking give me a little music,
put me in the mood. I noticed you were laughing
at me last week when I told you that the
Lakers were gonna beat the Golden State Warriors. They lost
it over time. But that was a pretty good pick there.
You didn't think it was gonna be that close, did
you plan? Uh? You like that one? I like it.
That's a good one. All right, let's get at it.
Oh that's special number one, the USC Trojans. I can't
(01:58:28):
wait to tell you. I don't want the sixth and hal.
I don't need the sixth and half. I would have
take the six and half. Ohio State not happy to
be that number four seed. They didn't even want to
play USC. I don't know if Sam Donald's playing in
the game. I'm assuming he is if he does. I
don't want the sixth and hal USC to beat Ohio State.
Just some of the other Bowl games out there. I
love Penn State minus the three against Washington. Believe it
(01:58:50):
or not, I'm taking Wisconsin minus the sixth and half
over Miami. I called this the overrated Bowl. Though Wisconsin
put up a good effort this weekend, Miami is miserable
in Wisconsin with that defensive effort should be able to
shut Yammy out. Give me Wisconsin minus the six and
a half. Do you know what the Michigan South Carolina
(01:59:11):
is line is up? Part? I have not looked. What
is it? You want to take a guess on that?
I would take Michigan as about a thirteen point favorite. Wow,
you're so off. I can't even begin South Carolina is
favored by nine and a half South Carolina's quarterbacks. The
worst thing I've watched in college is this. Maybe i'm
reading this, Roy, is there a misprint here? I have
(01:59:33):
South Carolina and eight point favorite, and what the nine
and a half are you? I'll just say this much
when I watched South Carolina play Clemson, and maybe it's
maybe it's just because I've watched the elite quarterbacks all
years in the Big twelve. Um, that's South Carolina quarterbacks
are the worst thing I've seen, Arnie. So that number
(01:59:54):
surprises me a bit. Now, some would argue, if I've
watched more Michigan football, I would really see some bad
quarter backing. So maybe we did something with his number
you did? What does it speed that? I forget who else?
And you had people transferred? Yeah, from that program. I'm
gonna take Notre Day. Well, I'm gonna take Michigan plus
the nine and a half anyway against South Carolina. Give
me Notre Dame plus the two against l s U.
(02:00:15):
The two big games my Oklahoma Sooners, I'll take as
a pick against Georgia. No, yeah, yeah, I can't, Arnie.
Every week you do these picks, you've picked against Oklahoma.
You are you cannot jump on the bandwagon now, my Sooners,
I'm taking as a pick. How about that? And give
(02:00:38):
me Alabama minus the one and a half over Clumps
and I'm gonna pick out them to win the whole
thing real quick. In the NFL, I'll take the Chiefs
that get back in the wind minus three daf against
the Raiders. I'll take Green Bay minds to feed that
against Cleveland charges mindus six against Washington, my Giants plus
six against Dallas and Miami plus twelve against the Patriots.
There you have my picks, two of them as you please,
(02:01:00):
but they are strictly for the tabent purposes only. I
can't figure out that NFC East outside of obviously Philadelpha. Philadelphia.
The Redskins, I thought looked like one of the better
teams in the NFL early in the season, and then
they've got They just got drummed on Thursday night. The Cowboys,
I thought they were done. Now suddenly they have life again,
not for the playoffs, but just respectability. I mean, do
(02:01:23):
they go back to ELI this week? Artie with your giants.
If you're no, you continue to lose and stay with
the top two seeds there, especially now that the Niners
are showing life. Yeah, okay, listen, suck be bad. Keep McAdoo.
We're good to go. All right, And then one other
quick story. We only have about a minute left, But
you have no problem with the game at thirty three
(02:01:44):
to nine and Adam Gates trying an onside kick for
the Miami Dolphins. No issue with that whatsoever? Right, I'll
think it. Adam Gates is saying to himself, if we
win by a lot, do we get two wins for
this game? Uh? He might have been confused, but I
loved it. I don't know. I didn't could have gotten
the other team back in the game, So it was
kind of a stupid move, but I've got no problem
(02:02:05):
with it. Well, you're playing the Broncos, who might have
the worst offense we've ever seen in the history of
the NFL. I mean, hell, I don't know how they
scored two touchdowns last week against the Raiders, but they did.
Chris Harris Jr. Said quote he's trying to embarrass us. Said,
there's clearly some bad blood, so obviously these two teams
will get out in the play. Uh no, no, we'll
(02:02:27):
have to wait for this one for a couple of
years now, but I gotta mit one of the unsung
stories of today. Adam Gates is on Sidekick with his
team up thirty three tonight for Arnie Spanier. I'm Chris Plank.
Thanks to our crew. Well back next week. Big Ben
Mallory is next on Fox Sports Radio.
