Jake Wells joins us this week wearing a new hat. In addition to being an athlete, business owner, coach, and mentor... He is now a race promoter. We cover Jake's journey through the pandemic and how that birthed Bighorn Gravel, and how you can win a dream gravel weekend courtesy of Outside Magazine and Bighorn Gravel...
Joining us for another lap in The Gravel Lot today is Tara Seplavy. This week we talk about her new role at Bicycling Magazine and what the current media landscape looks like. We then make a big transition into Traumatic Brain Injuries and have a very candid conversation about looking out for each other. This episode is a can't miss. Photo: Trevor Raab
Today, we are being joined by Kate Weatherly: A professional rider and human from the opposite side of the globe. After securing multiple New Zealand Downhill national championships, she's now focusing on Enduro, she is also a full-time medical products design engineer, and an all-together rad human being! We dig into her life, challenges, and what her future looks like on this week's episode of TGL. Photo: Keith Valentine
This week is a good old fashioned TGL throwback episode where we talk to a pro and follow along their career path. But, in classic TGL form, we don't talk about power metrics, or UCI points, but instead we discuss dyslexia and overcoming hurdles. Chris Schroeder has a very unique stance on the future of bike racing and we could not be happier to give him the opportunity to talk about Dimond Factory Racing with us.
This week is a little different. Since you just had the two of us last week, we are bringing in the big guns this week and we have a man who has climbed many a mountain in his life. Financial industry, Corporate America, becoming a multi-time ironman, a writer, an advocate, and so many other things. He came into our sphere because of his book entitled "Cycle for Lives", but we are going to give him the full TGL treatment.
We have had the very unique experience of seeing how bikes have influenced the lived experience of a great number (and diversity) of people. So, we been accumulating your questions over the last few months and figured we would answer them ON the show. So we've got some fun ones, some serious ones, and well, certainly some unserious ones.
This week we are talking ZINES... And mental health, speaking your truth, and of course bikes: Christina Torres is writer, editor, zinester of CYCLISTA ZINE + BIKE TALK, and has been referred to as: The feminist critique to cycling culture. Of course, we are going to get into the love of bikes, where it came from, and where it's all going.
Today we are joined by yet another guest delivered by The Pebbles. Kyle Johnson wrote his dream of racing bikes in Belgium on a poster board when he was 9 years old, and less than 10 years later, he was delivering on his dream. After having his life and career up-ended by the pandemic, he has spent the last year putting the pieces back together like many of us have. Enjoy the chat, and be sure to submit your comments and questions ...
Mike Finnegan rode his bicycle across the United States to raise money for his youth wellness scholarship charity. The thing is, traversing the entire country is probably the least interesting thing about his life and career. Tune in this week to learn why Mike Finnegan is the Gym Teacher that we all deserved to have while in school.
Starting the new year off strong, today we are joined by a person who has spent the better part of the last 2 decades trying to help nurture and develop the future of American Cyclocross. Geoff Proctor has spent the better part of 4 decades chasing the Cyclocross dream, and we delve deep into his reasons, motivations, and future plans.
In the season 4 finale, we are joined by Kenny Kocarek. Kenny is involved in nearly every aspect of the Northeast Ohio cycling scene. From racing single speed, volunteering on local trails, and just about everything in between: We will dig into his path into cycling, his motivations for getting more deeply involved, and what keeps him moving forward.
Today, TGL has the privilege of interviewing (arguably) one of the most influential people in the history of mountain bikes. David Wiens has been a part of the fat tire world since the mid 80's and has stepped atop podiums across the world, and in the mid 2000's, he dug his heels into trail advocacy and has been expanding his footprint on our world ever since.
To think that this is episode 200 of The Gravel Lot is astounding all on its own. We could not have done this without all of our community. 200 episodes, over half a million hours of downloads, and countless stories told, we finally share our own personal journeys into cycling. We hope you enjoy learning more about us, and get a deeper glimpse into our friendship and why TGL means so damn much to us.
This week we are going back to the true roots of The Gravel Lot. Talking to a local cyclist about his story in discovering the joys of cycling. Steven Acosta is the VP, Manager of Inclusion and Diversity at Fifth Third Bank located right here in Cincinnati and has a life story around bikes that is relevant on so many levels. Sit back, Enjoy the Chat, and share with your friends!
This week we are joined by Dr. Erin Ayala: She holds a PHD, and is the Director of Research, Development, and Assessment at Premier Sport Psychology. Somehow, she agreed to talk to us about bikes, and more importantly, the immense work she has been doing with the Stamina Racing Collective. Sit back, click the like button, share with your friends, and enjoy the chat! Photo: Snowy Mountain Photography
Randy Locklair has a unique perspective that has led him to grow a successful tech company from the ground up right along side growing his family, and growing his local cycling community. But his most important impacts on the world may still be on their way. Full stop: If the industry follows Randy's lead, we might be in a pretty good place in a few years. Credit @lawrence_siu
President of Central Alabama Mountain Pedalers, Professional Photographer, Associate Director of the Southeast Off Road Bicycle Association, and the reason Doug got back into bikes: These are just a few of Philip Darden's claims to fame. We let him share his story this week and inspire you to to change your neighborhood.
It wasn't even 3 years ago that we spoke with Ryan Gamm, but he has packed a lot of life in since that time, not even factoring in the pandemic. We catch up with Ryan to hear about his headwinds, both physical and mental, as well as the tailwinds that he has endured since we last spoke.
Due to extenuating circumstances, we recorded an episode with just the two of us for the first time since season 1. So we took the opportunity to talk about TGL, what we have been up to, and throw out some insights (and challenges) to the future of TGL. Tears/Kg are strong in this episode.
