Born Amelia Hobley in 1938, Amelia Elizabeth Dyer trained as a nurse and midwife. In 1969, recently widowed and seeking a new business venture to support herself, Amelia turned to baby farming—a Victorian term for the practice of adopting unwanted infants in exchange for money.
