To reverse the decline, redevelopment has been the most effective method for updating and improving the urban environment. My guest today, Steven Michael, CEO of Banyan Group, has proven to be a visionary in urban development, Steven was instrumental in pionee...
PALM BEACH COUNTY, like the rest of the country, has seen life changed (and continuing to change) in the shadows of a world pandemic (which put a pause on our lives for over a year), smartphones (which, it could be argued, have rewired the brains of the Gen-Z generation), and, perhaps most impactful, the burgeoning technology of Artificial Intelligence. How this is changing the way people communicate, interrelate and think is truly...
PALM BEACH COUNTY prides itself on being a great place to live, work and play. The fact is, some parts of our community are in need of an upgrade. Communities like Boca Raton, which is currently celebrating its centennial anniversary, have recognized the need to redevelop blighted areas to attract visitors and residents. My guest for this episode is Scott Brenner. Scott has over 35 years of experience in South Florida's commercial ...

My guest, Monica Gupta, brings a unique perspective, forged in the intensity of the courtroom and tempered by the joys and challenges of raising children. As a former prosecutor and attorney, she's ...
PALM BEACH COUNTY, like the rest of the country, embraces legal immigration. The infusion of capital (both intellectual and monetary) benefits our country. We are a country founded on the hard work of the people who came to the United States for a better life. However, over the past few years, the lack of effective controls over the onslaught of illegal migration has caused many to see immigration in a negative light. My guest in t...
PALM BEACH COUNTY has the third highest incidence of trafficking in Florida and Florida has the unenviable title of third highest incidence of trafficked people in the nation. Combating these gruesome statistics are a number of our “home grown” nonprofit agencies. My guest today. Alex Ortiz, is the Director of Development and Regional Advocate at FLITE (Fort Lauderdale Independence, Training & Education Center). The agency was ...
PALM BEACH COUNTY is home to a large number of residents with close ties to Israel. Relatives and friends who have made aliyah (the process of moving to Israel and becoming an Israeli citizen). As a result, the acts of brutality visited on Israeli citizens (many of the civilians) hit particularly hard for our community. Multiple opportunities to help our brothers and sisters in Israel have been provided to our residents. One such o...
PALM BEACH COUNTY depends on residents’ willingness to help govern our community. Be it a club, condominium, homeowners association, a village, city or town, special taxing district or the county. This doesn’t even scratch the surface as the state and federal government require citizens to step forward and accept the responsibilities of elective office. My guest today accepted the call by our governor to step into a county commissi...
PALM BEACH COUNTY is a place where over 1 million people call home. It’s a community, rich in resources, including recreational and cultural amenities. Residents view themselves as fortunate to live in such a vibrant community of great wealth and abundance. However is it enough to be living an “good life” or should we be striving to be better? In Hebrew the term “Tikkun Olam” means to repair the world .. leaving it better than we f...
PALM BEACH COUNTY residents, like those residing in other communities, are increasingly concerned about illegal immigrants invading our country. However, we are a country founded upon the handwork of immigrants over the past centuries. My guest today, Al Zucaro, addresses how legal immigration is a boon to our country and offers his take on how to ensure we embrace those willing to contribute to our nation’s prosperity. Take a list...
PALM BEACH COUNTY, like the rest of the world, witnessed the 60th presidential inauguration as Joe Biden welcomed his predecessor back to the White House making President Trump our 45th and 47th President of the United States. My guest today, Karol Markowicz, adds her perspective to the changes we have witnessed between those two terms. Many of the events over the last four years have caused a repudiation of the policies of the Bid...
PALM BEACH COUNTY residents, like those residing in other communities, are bombarded by information, often skewed by political perspective. Our guest today, Michael Solomon, is returning for a second episode. As I mentioned last week, Michael is a former NYPD Special Investigator whose tenure in the intelligence division, where he was assigned to protect the Shah of Iran and Madame Chang of Taiwan, taught him to question what other...

His analysis of the argument that climate change is more impacted by human activi...
PALM BEACH COUNTY is a community of great wealth and abundance alongside poverty and hunger. When I first entered into public service in the City of Boca Raton, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of people in our affluent community who go to bed hungry. Even before the pandemic, many families were unable to afford enough food to feed their families without assistance. Post pandemic, the problem has only grown worse. My guest, to...

PALM BEACH COUNTY is home of innumerable caring, giving individuals. Philanthropy and volunteerism are true virtues of many within our community who see those less fortunate than themselves as worthy of their help. Evan Darnell is pairing that spirit of giving back with a universal desire to enjoy a great event (great venue, food and theme). As the Secretary of Steak of the Red Meat Lovers Club, Even continues to identify worth non...
PALM BEACH COUNTY is no stranger to the nationwide focus on border security and immigration. Our country is founded on immigration and its continued prosperity depends on a strong economy fueled, in part, by immigrants ready to contribute to our economy. The total lack of control at our borders has created a major problem for our country as we have no comprehensive policy for absorbing these immigrants and/or ensuring we are admitt...
PALM BEACH COUNTY is often a county of transplants. Finding a native born Floridian over 40 is, generally, a difficult affair. The good news is many a “transplant” relocated to South Florida after success in business, up north. The infusion of newly minted residents with the drive and intelligence to succeed has produced a community of overachievers with a penchant for giving back. Brian Howie fits the bill as a recent transplant w...

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
