Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're on with Mario Lopeit. Tomorto Lopez joined me now
in studio the very talented Adam Lambert. Welcome back, buddy,
Hey how are you? I'm good, Always good to see you.
So we talked about a new album when you were
last here and now it's finally here. Finally is here
Velvet side A and I heard a little bit. I
(00:20):
am digging the funk and the kind of retro R
and B sort of flavor. I was like, yes, man,
what inspired the sound? You know? I grew up in
the house listening to a lot of like vinyl that
my parents had from the seventies and the eighties. And
when I went to the drawing board and thought, Okay,
what do I want to do for this new project?
I need an inspiration point. I thought, I don't want
(00:42):
to follow like what I'm hearing on the radio necessarily
right now. I don't want to like follow a trend.
I want to just like go back to what made
me want to become a musician. And why it's two releases, correct,
you're dividing it. Yeah, I'm gonna do like a side
A side B and why why not just drop it
all as an album? I don't know. I kind of
felt like it's twenty nineteen. There's no rules anymore, and
it's it's a fun way to kind of stretch out
(01:04):
the whole campaign and to stretch out the whole uh,
the whole thing for the audience. Right and and as
far as um, the new single is superpower. Uh did
you have like a dance floor sort of vibe? And
I mean I always love music that makes me like
dance and makes me groove. UM. All you know, almost
everything on this project has like a pocket to get into. UM.
(01:26):
But instead of doing like current e d M dance,
I wanted to go back to like the original dance music,
which to me is like disco. I love this. I
love disc and I love music that makes you want
to move. So I'm excited to hear thank you excited here?
So are Since they are two releases, are they both
in similar in sound? Are they going to be a
little different? They're a little different. I mean it's definitely
a cohesive project. I mean it's um. You know, once
(01:49):
the second half comes out, it will be available as
a full album. UM. For fans that want maybe vinyl,
we're gonna do some vinyl. I think, uh, it's definitely
a cohesive thing. I think this second half will sounds
slightly different, slightly different moods, slightly different reference point. And
I just saw that you're gonna be playing live in
the vineyard in October. That's the best when you're, um,
(02:11):
you got some wine, you're there hanging out. Is that
it's a little more stripped down version. Are you still
gonna we even figured that out yet? Um? But the
thing about all this music is it's really like designed
to be played by live players on stage. Um, you know,
with a lot of music that's out right now, there's
lots of cool like computerized sounds and layers and all
(02:32):
this stuff. And I love all that. I did all
that all my last album, but I just wanted to
kind of go a little more pure with this one.
So I'm I'm excited to kind of just get on
stage with great musicians and do a real show, really live.
Any plans to uh to do any sort of solo
tours and to get to hear this new music. Yeah,
that's that's the goal. Yeah, once the once the album's out,
(02:52):
I really want to tour. Yeah. I love touring, I
love performing for my fans. So some of your favorite
cities that you like to play? Oh? Um, you know. Actually,
on the Queen tour that I just got off of,
we played New Orleans for the first time and we
as Queen plus me, We've never played there and it
was really fun to go walking on the French Quarter.
And I'd love to go back. I love it there. Yeah,
(03:12):
that's a fun VI food, good drinks. Yeah yeah, uh
and uh you're You're also going to be part of
the big tribute concert in Stockholm. Yeah, that's yeah, they're
gonna it's a mental health awareness angle and it's going
to be really interesting to get together with everybody that's
worked with Vici over the years and pay tribute to
(03:35):
him and and to perform these songs that he made
so famous. Have you spend any time in Sweden? I have. I.
I was there for like two months when I was
working on my my last album. Yeah. I worked on
it with a lot of Swedish people, so I liked
it there a lot. I'm excited to go back. Yeah.
Is that is are the Sweets the one that put
out the pop song Who's the dude that remember he
(03:57):
worked with? Like Katy Perry worked with a bunch of
people Max Martin. Yeah, next poets from Sweeten. I knew
that they music they're not. That's awesome. Um. And there
are rumors that a new Queen album maybe in the works.
I don't think that. I think that's I think that
I heard the rumor too, and I went early, I
don't think that's what it is. I mean, not not
(04:18):
involving me anyway. So news news to me. But yeah,
we'll have to remain to find out. But also, there's
so much amazing stuff in the vault, you know. I
think Queen. Queen was really good at like saving all
of their sessions, and so maybe they have something like
a kind of behind the scenes audio look at the
making of um, something like that, I think. And then
(04:40):
I like, I like the the cameo you had with
that girl Ellen in Taylor's video, which is kind of cool.
Had that comeback that was crazy. I was actually on
the Ellen Show that day taping a performance in one
of my songs, new Eyes, UM, and Taylor was pretaping
stuff that day as well. Um. We weren't on the
same episode, but we were there the same day, and
she came to my addressing and we started talking for
a minute. We've met a couple of times. We don't
(05:01):
know each other that well. But um, she just came
in and say hi and then said, hey, by the way, um,
we're filming this thing like in twenty minutes just around
the corner in this trailer. You want to come be
in it? And I said, okay, cool. Yeah, that's like
a spur of the moment thing. It was great, Please
be at the right place right And professionally, I know
things going great, and personally, yeah, things are going great.
(05:23):
I'm super happy. I bought a new house. Yeah yeah,
um homeowner. Yeah. I mean I had a house and
I I just it was just timed upgrade. Okay, so
I got a real pool this time I had. I
had a pool on my other house that was Um,
I put it in and this is kind of it's
kind of silly, but I put in. I wanted to
put in a pool. And they told me, hey, you
(05:43):
know what, if you want to do this, you have
to knock down this wall and you're gonna have to
bring in like tractors that contractor. Yeah. They were like
it's going to be a whole thing, fermnutes and all
this stuff. And I was like, okay, well, I just
want some water in the backyard, So let's just do
like a water feature, right, like a like kind of
like alecting pool. And they were like, got it. So
they sent me the designs. I did it. We started
(06:03):
the process. I was away on tour and I came back.
I didn't realize how big this thing would be or
the shape of it would look just like a pool,
except it was only a foot and a half deep.
So everybody, yeah, it's like a it's like a bird bath,
like a giant bird bath. So everybody that came over
for for months would come over and be like, oh,
(06:25):
what's up with the pool? And I'd be like, you
could stand in it. If you're like what can I
get in it? I'm like, you can get in it
if you want, Yeah, sure. Can I get a towel?
You don't need one, Okay, just take your shoes off,
just kind of chilling, right, that's funny. So you did
a remodel night, yeah, and the and so one of
the first things on my priority list for the new
house is like, get a pool you can actually get into. Yeah,
(06:46):
So I got one of those. Made it good for
you could have had Mario come. He has a show
where he supersizes pools I do on a g TV
called Supersize My Pool. Damn we needed some money. I
mean it's still on the market. Maybe I should have
because that's so yeah, exactly all right, I want to
put you back on the spot. Quick questions, quick answers. Okay, yeah,
(07:06):
song that's stuck in your head at the moment. Uh,
I love a quick answer. Um uh oh that Lana
del Rey that Summertime and I Live is easy. No, no, no, no, no,
empty what is it? Uh? What's it's on the new album?
I'm trying to think of the name of Time. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Oh,
(07:31):
I didn't realize that. That's right, that's the yeah. Oh
that makes sense. Now just put our Lana spin on it.
That's why familiar to me when I'm saying, yeah, I
didn't realize. It's like this feels good. I mean the summertime.
It's obviously summertime. But no appreciate that. The video is cool.
It's just like Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman. We
created that video movie. You've seen the most Velvet gold Mine.
(07:53):
It's like my favorite movie. It's so cool. It's from
the nineties. Todd Haynes directed it. Uh, and it's about
like glamor rock in in the early seventies. It's super sexy.
I have to check that out. Last day job you've had,
I worked at what's the last one I had? I
worked at the mall. I worked at north Strom's Century
(08:16):
City north Strom in the cosmetic department. Okay, shout out
to north Queen's song you Wish was in the set.
Best Friend, I think would be fun to play. We've
never done that one and we've gotten some questions about it,
so you're my best friend? Would be cool. I'd like
that one. What superpower would you want? Oh? Um? I
(08:39):
think i'd want to fly? Yeah. Every time I see
a bird, I'm like, damn, I got the good life.
About the touring to get there quick? Yeah, just I'm
flying myself. Don't worry about me. Velvet Side A comes
out September. You can follow him on Instagram at Adam Lambert.
