Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're on with Mario Lopez. It's Mario Lopez joining now
in studio from the Netflix show Selling Sunset. Actress Chris
Shell Hardley. How are you welcome to the show. Thanks
for having me. I'm good. So, Okay, a couple of
things I want to talk about first, because I I
love real estate and I've always been sort of fascinating.
(00:21):
My mom actually got me really into it at a
young age. She was like, Mi, whole um, they're not
making any more of it, so you might as well
try to get a little something. And it's very conservative, right,
it's very sort of conservative investing. And so I I
really like these shows and it's fascinating how they've been
able to kind of make so many and yet they're
(00:41):
all still successful. So for those not familiar, tell me
about this show, Selling Sunset. Okay. So, Adam Devello is
our creator and the show if you check it out,
it might seem a little familiar because he created Laguna
Beach in the Hills, and so I would say it's
kind of a mix of that meets million dollar listing.
So you've got does the drama come from the purchases
(01:08):
or the inquiries or it's just sort of like a
little like Vanderpump Rules, Like there's the restaurant and then
you get to know the people and then their drama
outside of the deal. It's a little bit of that.
And then it's also you know, it's a competitive market
and we all work in the same office, so there's
some competition within agents and clients. So there's that, but
then there's also some personal drama that comes in. I
(01:29):
it all gives me anxiety. I'd much rather like deal
with the real estate. But of course, you know this
stuff that really does happen. It's very competitive in the
office and it's kind of cut throughout in the luxury
real estate market, so it kind of gives you a
look into you know, this high end world. And I'm
the newbie joining the office. That's kind of the show
follows me joining this tight knit group. So it is, um,
(01:52):
there is some drama that happens, just as it would
but it's definitely UM. I'm not the vestal because it
literally the draw my part gives me. But um, but
it's hard. I mean is that we deal with a
lot of this, a lot of like competition and stuff,
so it's tough. I was gonna say, is it like
prison on the first day you just go in and
attack someone? Yeah? You really the soap and you you
(02:17):
bring your ship? How did how did it come about
for you? So? Actually, I when I I've been doing
soap operas for almost my whole adult life, which um,
I loved. But sometimes you're not working and the phone
doesn't ring, you're between jobs, and so I kind of,
um was investing on my own and so it's just
kind of something that naturally I was interested in, kind
(02:39):
of like what you were saying. But then so I
was like, Okay, this is actually something I can turn
into a side career when I'm not working on a
soap Barbara, and so it kind of started that way,
and I just, you know, slowly started helping like different
friends that needed to buy a house or whatever. And
then lo and behold, I got approached to do the show,
which was kind of nice because it didn't conflict they worked,
(03:02):
they were happy to work around my Days of Our
Lives schedule, so it was a little crazy but fun. Yeah,
and so now I I feel like I I do both,
which is nice. So you kind of got the best
of both the world. So smart too, because so many
people just sort of kind of sit around either wait
for the phone to ring or get stressed. Good for
you to have that sort of hustle mentality and to
do something that you like and then it ends up
(03:22):
kind of working out, uh, and you get to kind
of service both things ironically, right. I know, it definitely didn't.
I didn't start out with that in mind, but it's
kind of been a little Christmas So it's it's good. Yeah,
And uh, what's this about your first name? It doesn't
have to do with the day you were born or
what's going on there. Okay, so um, okay, So my mom,
this is back when the Shell stations had like a
(03:44):
where you could get your car serviced, and so she
was getting her car worked on and she actually went
into labor at the Shell station and the guy that
was helping her, he was holding her hand. He called
the ambulance. I wasn't born at a Shell station. But
he was just so lovely with her and calmed her down.
And his name was Chris. She wanted to kind of
name me something with Chris and it, and so she
literally just stuck the two together, Chris and Shell. That's awesome.
(04:08):
That's the best story I ever heard for her name
right there. While Yeah, that happens to be so flattered.
I guess I need to meet him. I actually haven't
met him as an adult. Wow. Good thing she wasn't
at like a union seventy six. That's my dad likes
to say. Id thing it wasn't a Texico. You'd beat
Chris Texica. That's his Thanksgiving joke. Every day, much better life.
(04:33):
Um So, getting back to the show for for a second.
I've had a couple of friends out of have binge
watched and they really like it and stuff. What's been
the reaction from most people? Actually, it's so funny because
we took you know, we filmed this over the course
of well over three months, and it's just so funny
to get the feedback. People are watching it in one
day and they're like, okay, one season two. So that's good.
(04:53):
I mean, the feedback has been incredible and so supportive
and nice. Um. I feel like it's been encouraging, and
I feel like that's what Netflix wants. I think their
whole model is that they want you to bene it.
So I think it's doing really well. So that's exciting.
People are I'm a little surprised. I mean, they're literally
watching it one day, so it's been great. Would you
be interested in doing another season? I would be, I. I
(05:15):
I would be. I definitely, you know, like you said,
I would rather focus a little more on real estate
side of it. But um, you know, this drama really
does happen even when the cameras aren't there, so I
guess it really is part of it. So um that
part stresses me out, but you know what, I'm a
team player. I think it's uh. I would definitely be
on board for season two. Yeah. Yeah, once you kind
(05:35):
of get the hang out, you kind of navigate and
you can kind of see and they get clever with
that editing though, because I do feel that's true. I
feel like the first time I didn't really know what
I was doing because I'm so used to scripted and
I was like, wait, what is she doing? But now
I feel like I would have a little bit more
of um my sea legs under me. But um, just
like you said, you never know because with the editing,
(05:57):
you're still putting it out there and just hoping for
the best. Add that music and forget about you did
return the two days of our lives. After taking some
time off and stuff. What was it like going back
to the show. It's fun. I have to say, Um,
they kind of brought me on totally different. The first
time I was on, my character was really sweet and
nice and and a little timid, and this time she's
(06:18):
full blown crazy. So I feel like, if you're ever
going to come back to a soap, this is I mean,
it's I'm injecting people with barbiturates and I'm kidnapping kidnapping babies.
It's it's a lot of fun. Awesome. That's a fun
character to bring some of that on to the Selling Sunset,
to the Selling Sunset. Gonna take notes from Jordan's Are
(06:40):
they still shooting that right here in Burbank at the yea? Yeah,
I interviewed. I remember there was a couple forget their names,
that they were like nineties something, ninety. They're like ninety.
They've been on the show for like sixty years exactly,
and they live right here in to Luca Lake. It
was such an idea, you know what I'm talking about?
(07:01):
Do I do? They're so lovely? They are, Yeah, they are.
It's so funny. Do that a lot with you know,
there's certain matriarchs and stuff where like Susan Lucci was
like that did your Hall. You know you've got um
Victor Newman with Eric Braden, So I feel like they
it's kind of cool. I feel like that is what
makes people, makes people latch onto them and feel like
(07:23):
it's like home because they watch it with their grandma
and maybe their grandma isn't here anymore, so it's nice.
It becomes generational. Yeah, Um, and your husband, Justin Harley,
very nice guy. I got to do a fun little
scene with him on the on the show I Know
You're this is a star boy. His character in particular
has reference to me like three times. I know. Do
(07:45):
you know? Do you get that? Because that's one of
my wife and I we have are She has her
shows that she watches her Housewives and whatever by herself,
and then I have my show I watched, like my
Narcos and you know, and then we have our couples
watch shows. Those are important. I'm not allowed to DVR
cheat on her with the couples watch you can't do that.
So this is us is at the top of our
list and our couples watch shows, so we're only I
(08:06):
think we're only like an episode behind right now, so
we didn't see the finale, and so obviously I gotta wait.
So I think we're trying. We're trying to get to
that tonight. But anyway, and watching the show, and I think,
as a matter of fact, the very first episode, I
gotta shout out and he's referenced me like a couple
of times that it's so funny. And then finally I
got to be on the show. But then I ended
up on the phone. That was a kind of a
(08:27):
weird kind of this was such a big deal. They
were so excited he was going to be on This
is Us. And then when it came out, he's like,
now see that editing. It was the editing that was
a total shady move, right, But no, I uh it
was it was. It was really cool and it was
a lot of fun. He's he's a super super nice guy.
(08:48):
So the finale happened, Uh last week? Did you does
he fill you in? Does he get to know what
happens throughout the season or they get the scripts just
one week at a time? Right, Well, normally the creator
will include them in so they know where the story
is going, right, But I you know, I really try
and stay spoiler free. The scripts will literally be laying
on our kitchen counter. Yeah, even last night, Like you know,
(09:12):
obviously in l A, we get to watch the show
a few hours after everybody else is on Twitter tweeting
about it from New York. So I I even like
go dark on the internet. I'm like, I do not
want it to be spoiled. If I went this long
with those scripts sitting around, I don't want it to
be spoiled the last few hours on Twitter. So I
really every once in a while run scenes with him,
but only if, um, it's something that doesn't spoil a
(09:34):
huge story. He'll be like, because sometimes we'll go to
run a scene for lines and he'll be like, you
know what, never mind, it'll give too much away. Yeah, yeah,
I know. He's really good and he has to play
buzz drunk a lot, which is difficult, and it does
a really good job. And the last one we saw
we might be too behind because the last one we
saw is when he was he was acting like it
(09:55):
was drinking water was actually vodka in the hospital And
what are the pressing episode? By the way, you don't
know what's good the baby and the whole. I'm like,
oh my god. But it is very interesting how they
go back and forth. And he's got a cool younger
version of himself too, the younger versions of itself, the
real younger one or in the middle ones kind of
brady rightly, but the other one. Yeah, but no, the
(10:18):
show is definitely on our DVR as far as the
couple's watch right there. I feel like you guys are
like the finale. I feel like, you know, it definitely
has happier. That was a heavy episode, but just stick
it out, stick it out. But I like Kevin. I
don't have to have everything, so you know, happy all
the time, So I like it, which is cool. All right.
I want to put you on the spot right here.
Quick questions, quick answers. Okay, okay, go to karaoke song?
(10:41):
Oh um, you know a classic you ought to know?
Lantis MORI set Okay, it's aggressive. Yeah, I didn't get
that answer to figure last movie you saw in theaters?
Um it was, Oh isn't it romantic? I took Bella.
She's fourteen, so that's right down her alley. That's the one.
Which one is that with um Rebel Wilson? Right? Yes, yes,
(11:03):
because I was like vaguely familiar with it. Yes, yes,
celebrity crush growing up. Um, Jonathan Taylor Thomas J T. T.
We've had j A. T. T. It's a certain era
shout outs. Where are you from? Originally Kentucky, Kentucky? Well,
part western Kentucky. It's really small. It's called draft Inville. Okay, Ville, Okay,
(11:26):
where's your accent? Well? If this you know what, if
this was vodka moments, I would start talking like that.
There's certain or there's certain words that you say that
it comes out all I have to. I have to
underline them in scripts, like brother. I try. It's really
hard for me not to I say brother instead of
like I have to lift my mouth almost my whole
head when I say brother. Otherwise I want to go brother.
(11:49):
Yeah yeah, How far are you from? Louisville? Three hours? Okay? Yeah? Yeah,
I was supposed to go to the Derby. Uh this
year so much fun? I know, I you know, I
been a couple of years in both times it rained.
Oh I was once rain too, which is kind of yeah,
but it's is someone and those men julips are good. Um.
Plus you already had the hat picked out. I had
(12:09):
the whole common looking like a boss man. Okay, I'm
gona have to say it for next year. Uh nickname
growing up? Mm hm, Smiley, it was just our Twinkie.
I I can't remember, but I don't even remember the
way that came about. I think, well, Smiley's a little bit.
I don't remember how Twinkie came about. And then my
(12:30):
uncle had They're all bad. I don't know. I don't
even what. I don't want when you got such a
great history of your real name, you know what I mean?
Right there? Time travel destination? Sorry what time travel destination? Um,
let's see. How about the eighties? Just fun? Just go
back to the yeah, why not any particular uh point
(12:55):
in the eighties. Um, let's see, it was a big
like that's when new kids on the block came out,
and I was like teasing my hair, trying to be cool.
But I was little, um not specific, I mean stayed
by the bell. But that's that's more nineties. That's more nineties,
that's right, yeah, style right, right, that's not always kind
(13:18):
of like the fashion was like transitioning from nineties. Yeah, exactly. Um,
the coolest person you sold the house too. It was
the nicest person dis Justin Harley count Really yeah, of
course he's got a great agent. Very cool, very cool. Well. Meanwhile,
