Speaker 1 (00:01):
Mario Lopez. It'sapria Mario Lopez joining me now on Zoom. Actor, comedian, director,
at Ja Chandra State Car. Welcome to the show Man.
How are you? How are you doing? How's it going?
It's going well, Thank you, congrats. The trailer for you
new movie has dropped Easter Sunday, starring Joe Koy Who's
who's a frequent guest here? What's it all about? Well,

(00:22):
you know Joe if you follow his first of all,
Joe is is the number one ticket selling stand up
in show business. This guy sells out basketball stadiums. He
outsold the Golden State Warriors the night after they had
a playoff game because he put seats on the floor.
I mean, he sells fifty six thousand seats in l
A and thirty eight thousand Seattle. And so he's got

(00:45):
an incredible thing going and and and during the pandemic um.
He also has some stand up specials in Steven Spielberg,
uh name drop saw one of his specials on Netflix
and said, you know, we gotta make a movie with
that guy. Uh. And so they called me up and
they said, will you go to Vancouver and make a
movie with Joe Koy and I was like, of course,

(01:07):
you know, of course, so it's his first film. Of
course I go into this not having any idea whether
he can act or not. I mean, he's an incredible
stand up but I'm like, you know, some people can't
pull it off. It's not always the case, but on
the first day, you know, I mean, look, it was
an interesting First of all, he cannot. He's a he's
a really good actor. He's a leading man kind of guy. Uh,
and he sort of translated that that stand up charisma

(01:31):
into into a movie which is largely drawn from some
of the stories of his life. You know, if you
if you follow Joe KOI stand up and I recommend
you do. Uh. He'll he has this incredible combative relationship
with his mother, who's like this, you know, sort of
sort of sort of a hard, hardass Filipino woman. Um,

(01:52):
and the two of them just kind of go at it.
And then in the movie, Uh, he's living in l
A trying to be a comic and she's like, are
you coming home for Easter Sunday? And he's like, I'm
really busy, and she just hounds him and hounds him
until he comes and send them The whole movie takes
place over one or two days back in Daily City,
which is sort of the central the center of Filipino

(02:12):
American kind of culture in America. And uh, it's it's
a little like Fridays. It's a little you know, it's
like a it's just a really sort of really funny movie.
Um that happens to have a lot of Filipinos and
Filipino Americans in it. Oh that's great, that's great. And
in Filipinos are strong Catholics too, so Easter Sunday is
a big important day there. Um. And I like movies
that take place over like a day or too easy

(02:34):
with the wardrobe. You don't have to you know what
I mean. Um, also in the works, Uh quasi now
this looks like a parody of the Hunchback in order. Dame,
what what can you tell us about that? Yeah, well
it's actually it's it's for quasi quasi modo qua. So um,
this movie is the latest Broken Lizard film. Let me

(02:57):
just say one thing. Easter Sundays coming out August a
theatrical wide. We're the only wide released theatrical comedy this summer.
I'll look at that. That's something to boast about I'll
make sure we're gonna revisit that and put all the
info on our website as well. Sure. Yeah, yeah, But
but Quasi is a movie that I've made with my
group Broken Lizard. We made super Troopers, beer Fest, Club Draft,

(03:20):
all these movies, and my friend Kevin Hefford and who
played Farva and super Troopers, I don't if you've if
you've seen that, he directed this film. And it's seven
thirteenth century France and it's centered around a hunchback who
gets in the middle of a conflict between the King
of France Meet and the Pope uh, and the two
of us are trying to, you know, outpower each other

(03:41):
and this hunchback it's in the middle of this international intrigue.
It's funny. It's a Python movie. It's basically I was
in this movie in a wig with robes and the
sword and I'm like speaking in an English accent, and
I looked at my friend and I'm like, we're in
a Python movie. Yeah, so can give that in that?
What about super Troopers super Troopers three? Any any updates there? Well,

(04:04):
we you know, we I'm the point guy on that movie. Um,
and so we we printed, I printed draft for everyone's
reading it. We're gonna do another draft next week and
then we're just gonna kind of crank through it until
we can get get it ready. It's it's currently called
super Troopers three Winter Soldiers. I love it killing the

(04:26):
comedy game there. And this is interesting, Jay, You've got
a new app called vouch vault Um. Is it basically
social media for movie lovers? Is that a fair to scouh.
Here's what happened. Right twenty years ago, I went to
Sundance with my film Supertroopers, right, and it was everybody
loved it there, and we sold it and it was

(04:46):
we made profit. Everything was great. A year later, it
comes down in the theaters and I look at the
Rotten Tomatoes meter and it says thirty six percent fresh
this ninety reviewers wrote this thirty six percent. They didn't
like it because they always trash comedies, in part because
they can because they're kind of like, well, we really
want to go to Oscar movies and parties and we

(05:08):
want to see Spielberg, so we'll trash you guys. I
will make plenty of you guys, Okay, So they do that.
So fresh now a couple of years later, on the
same Tomato meter, they they they interview whatever, they two
and fifty thousand, just regular civilians gave it a nine
fresh rating, and You're like, I was like, who are

(05:30):
these ninety reviewers who have all this power? I mean,
they're just they're really good writers, but they're just these
people who work in newspapers. And I'm like, they're basically strangers, right,
And I said, when's the last time you walked up
to a stranger and said, Hey, what movies should I see?
I mean, that's what it is. And when you take
run Tomatoes and you aggregate all these strangers opinions about
what movie you're seeing, like what, how is this useful?

(05:51):
And so I decided to get Revenge. And it took
me about sixteen years to figure out how it's going
to do it. And finally I'm like, I'm going to
build an app that is basically the Instagram of recommendations, okay,
And I'm gonna build it so that when you go
to a movie, Mario, and let's say you and I
are friends, you go you follow me and I'm like,

(06:13):
I like the movie, um, Elvis, and you go, well,
I know Jack and he and we have the same
opinion on Mulin Rouge, and we like uh Romeo and
Juliet this filmmaking films from the same filmmaker. Or I
like the movie Good Fellas, or I like the movie
Reservoir Dogs, or I like the band um Wilco, or

(06:34):
I like this restaurant. Right, So it's it's it's whatever
you love, whatever you vouch for. So if you like
the Tesla car, you put it on there. I like
the Tesla car, and and you and you can message
me and go, hey, how how's the pickup on it?
I'm like, it's fantastic. And it's a way to take
recommendations and put them into the power into the people.

(06:55):
You know. So if you follow your friends, your family,
maybe celebrities, whatever, you you have a sense of what
they already like, as opposed to some stranger on some
uh you know, some newspaper. I mean, and those are
the people before you run tomatoes, and those are the
people that count. You're right, you know what. I like
that because I always I don't have that much time

(07:17):
in my schedule too, and I love to go to
the movies, so I really wanted to to spend the
time watching ones that I know that you're getting some
solid reviews all the way across. Right, So I'll read
a ton of you, not just around tomatoes. I'll read
a ton. But if I have this app people that
I care about or that I know you're a smart,
much easier move, I like it. I like it. Um,
you've got kids, right, I do. I have three kids.

(07:41):
I have a seventeen year old and two fifteen year
old girls. The seven year old boys is uh is
you know he's gonna go he has one more year
and then he's gonna go to college. What what are they?
What are they into? Are they following in your footsteps?
The boy is um, he's made about five or six films.
O amtalog little ones. But but it's fun because I can.

(08:07):
I go into his room and he's editing on his
computer and I'm like, cut that, you know, flip that
shot around, shortened it here, like that, you know, and
we we get to have this conversation which is really
kind of fun and interesting. With the kid. I used
seventeen and I watch his editing style and I'm like,
that's incredible. It's it's fun to watch. That's fun. And

(08:29):
the dog my daughter is. One of them is a
you know, a very good dancer, uh, and the other
one's a tennis player. Very cool, very cool with Jay Man.
Congratulations on everything. You're You're killing it right now. Look
forward to the app and the movie and that movie
is Easter Sunday, which is theater is August five. Thanks
so much for hanging out. And vouch fault. You can

(08:50):
get it right now, right now in the App Store
and then on the Android store. Vouch Fault, vouch u LP. Yeah,
vouch fault got you right on, brother, Thank you. Thanks Mario,
you got it on with Mario Lopez
