Speaker 1 (00:04):
Mario Lopez joining me now on Zoom stand up comic
Kathleen Madigan. Welcome to show, Kathleen. Howre you doing well?
Thank you? I'm doing good. How are you? I'm well?
Thank you for taking the time. Congrats on the new
special Hunting Bigfoot on Amazon. What's the significance of the title.
I don't imagine you're actually going on a hunt. No,
I'm not. I'm not that into it. Um no, but
I just a while back I found out I was
(00:27):
going to Portland, Oregon, Eugene and Medford. And since COVID, like,
the animals have been coming more into towns and stuff.
So I was saying to the other comedian, what would
we do? We're not really hunting bigfoot? But what would
we do if we hit one? Like? You need like
a plan, like it's millions of dollars, Like we don't
want to react emotionally in the moment. We would need
(00:47):
to have a plan. So then in my Scotch show,
I tell you what my plan would be. I'm all
about plans. I like it. Um did you film this
in Portland? That's where you shot this? No? No, no,
I filmed it in Denver at the paramount just is
that theater is so awesome and everybody that works there
is awesome, and they get super excited about comedy. Like
some people they like music better or whatever, but Denver's
(01:09):
a super great comedy towns. Yeah, yeah, it's nice and
high up there. Yeah, laugh at everything. Weeds legal, I forgot. Yeah,
so they're feeling good. It's weed everywhere, that's right now. No,
I'm not even I'm not even a weed person, Like,
I'm more of a drinker. So it doesn't really it
doesn't really do much for me, but I'm glad all
my pothead friends are super happy. That's right. It makes
(01:29):
for a good audience. How long did it take you
to put together our material? Well, it usually takes about
two years. But then there was that COVID gap. Uh,
And then then when everybody came back, they're like, well,
you could do one, but everybody has to have a
mask on and they have to be seated apart. And
I'm like, no, no, no, no, no no, no, no no lunches. Wait,
that's no fun. Yeah, that's not that's not that's not
(01:50):
a fun comedy vibe. When you're sitting there thinking, yeah, no,
so I just waited. Good for you. Good for you.
It's cool that Netflix, Amazon, the streaming services are sort
of creating a boom for comedy and seems like they're
giving you sort of creative liberty too. Do you do
you think, um, they're oversaturating us or it's the more
the merrier. I know, I've always been in the opinion
(02:14):
the more the merrier. I mean comedy Sechil did that
for a while too, Like everybody starts out small and
then they're like, hey, this is cheap and easy to make.
There's only one person involved. It's not like a movie.
It's it's a lot simpler, so I think it's cost effective.
And then you know, I don't know. I mean I
still go on Netflix and see people that I even
I've never heard of, and I'm a comedian. I should
(02:35):
have heard of them, but maybe I missed it. So yeah,
I don't know. I think the more of the marrier.
Why not. You got a bunch of tour dates coming up, Kathleen,
Let me ask you. Do you find audiences are are
a lot more easily offended today. I gotta imagine being
right after being a cop of comics got to be
the toughest thing, Like nobody could say a joke anymore,
(02:57):
even Tiger Woods. So I'm not even a fan of
when that little thing when he handed the camp on,
I think it was to Justin Thomas. I mean that
was between friends, and all of a sudden there's an
uproar and you gotta apologize for everything. I was like,
come on, comedy. I wasn't. Yeah, like, I wasn't even
offended by that. I did think it was like something
my twelve year old nephew might do, because that's how
because that's how guys are guys, right, It's it's it's you.
(03:20):
It's juvenile. But I go, well, oh, there's what the
guys are doing, so whatever. But I don't, I hate,
don't really go into super controversial topics. So but like
other friends of mine that do, Yeah, I think people
are hyper, But I think you just can't pay attention
to the one person. If there's fifteen hundred people there
at fourteen ninety nine at a good time and one
(03:42):
did not, well that's on you. One person that's on you.
Fourteen ninety nine were totally great with the night, then
that's the vote. Now, if it was half, you might
step back and think, Okay, what did I say or
what did I do? If it was a lot, but
it's usually one, and then that just gets blown completely
(04:03):
out of proportion that all kinds of people are mad,
when really it's just like a few. I agree, comics
got to stay strong, keep doing your thing. You also
got a podcast, Maddikins Pubcast, which you talk about on there.
I talk a lot the stories that nobody seems to
report like that are more on the lighter side. They're
(04:24):
not really hard things. I try to stay away because
I think in the past few years we've all gotten
oversatuated with politics and fighting, and these are more like well,
like this week. I don't know why it makes me
laugh so hard, but there's a French bulldog and a
SPCA deal in New York and they've tried to adopt
him out like four times, and they call him a
(04:45):
fire breathing dragon. I'm like, he's twenty six pounds. Even
the people that worked at the shelter like, if you
think Ralphie just needs love, you're wrong. He will exploit you.
Do not show up here. Like I've never heard animal
people talk about a dog like it's truly a dragon.
It's a French bulldog. But the things they kept saying,
(05:07):
so just stuff like that that's a little lighter, a
little sillier and stupidity. Really, I've got a couple of
French bulldogs are far from dragons, but you gotta google Ralfie.
And he's so cute. He's got like the patch. I
wear his eyes white with the Brenda patch. He doesn't
look like a problem, but he's a problem according to them. Wow. Well,
(05:28):
congratulations on the special. You can watch Hunting Bigfoot out
now on Amazon Prime. Kathleen, thanks for hanging out all right.
Good to see you guys. You two take care City
with Mario Lopez
