Speaker 1 (00:00):
Fun with Mario a little bit. It's up You're on.
Mario Lopez joined me now on Zoom. The winner of
season five of The Mass Singer The Piglet Nich Let's
say welcome back by Man. Congratulations, I appreciate it, thanks man.
So how did you get involved? Were you a fan?
Did they approach you? And had to be so much
fun for all the kids? Yeah, definitely. I mean the

(00:21):
kids were a big part of the reason I wanted,
you know, wanted to do the show. I was actually
gonna do season two, and then I had another TV
thing and I couldn't make it work scheduling wise. So um,
it was always something that I wanted to do. And
then I was kind of a last minute addition to
this season. I was actually in Colorado skiing with some
friends and I got a call like, hey, would you
would you want to be a part of your Mass
Singer this season? So I like four days later, it

(00:42):
was on stage in a pig outfit, you know, uh,
singing the first song. So it was kind of a
kind of a whirlwind beginning to it. But yeah, the
kids had a blast with it. I had a blast
with it. You know, It's just a lot of fun
for our our whole family to kind of go on
this little journey. I bet that the costume was pretty hilarious.
How did you end up as the as the piglet?
What other options did you have? No, it's funny because

(01:02):
I was so last minute. They that was the first
thing they presented to me. And and uh, ironically, like,
I'm from Cincinnati, it's the city of the Flying Pig,
is it? I didn't know that. Yeah, my production got me.
These flying Pig productions just just meant to be, you
know what I mean? It felt like felt like fate. Uh.
And then my and in Vanessa, I asked our oldest, Hey,
if if dad ever did the math singer, what kind
of animal you know, should he be? Or what should

(01:24):
he said? Should be a pig? So just like all
the things aligned, and I'm like, I'm supposed to be
the pig. That's just the way it's supposed to be.
I'm a fan of pigs. I'm a huge fan of
pigs and the tasty little guys. Good for you. You
showed off some range to man. You sang for everything
from food fighters to Phil Collins, even little Louis Capaldi.
How did you pick your song choices. I picked it,

(01:45):
I mean pretty much for that reason, to show some range.
I didn't want to be one dimensional and I wanted
to you know, kind of step out of the comfort
zone a little bit and do uh, you know, do
some different stuff. And honestly, one else somebody gonna have
a chance to you know, to sing the pretender, you know,
sing food fighters in a pig, you know, big outfit.
So the chance he gets, you know, take some risks
and go out there. I did a little opera on
one and uh, and you know that's part of the

(02:07):
fun I think for me was was to you know,
go all over the place, not just do one kind
of one kind of genre, one kind of song. So
um and hopefully I think too it's one of the
things that it shows, Um, it shows your rangers and performance,
one of the things that kind of get you to
the finish line, you know what I mean. That was
that was part of that was part of the strategy.

(02:27):
And I give Vaness a lot of credit. She's she's
you know, she loves music more than I do. She
she definitely helped picked, you know, helped me pick the
songs for the season, and especially the last one that
they the Journey song. That was definitely a song she
champion right in there to the to the finale, So
give her a lot of credit. Nice it worked out.
We're a lot of people able to guess you you know,

(02:48):
I mean I kind of knew that, you know, because
I've worked with everyone on that judging panel before in
different capacities, and like, they're gonna know it's me. They
know my voice and um and uh, and other people
did too, I think right out of the gate, you know,
people who were fans of ninety degrees and knew my voice.
It was kind of obvious it was it was me.
So I didn't even try to think about that stuff.
And like, let me just go out there and even
if they know it's me, give the best performance I

(03:09):
can give, and you know, we'll see how far we
can take this thing. Well we'll speaking of ninety degrees. Um,
y'all are back with a new remix album Summer of
ninety eight. Uh, what made you want to revisit these songs? Well,
you know, I mean it's like it's been twenty plus
years since we were released a lout of these and
and uh, the chance to kind of put a new
spin on them, and and and put some new music out.
But it's not just that we actually have a new single,

(03:32):
brand new single that's dropping nud July ninth, But where
do You Want to Go? We're putting out a whole
new EP in the fall of all new original music. So,
you know, being being on the sidelines for you know,
a year and a half, basically, I think we're all
just itching to get back out there and do you
know what we love to do and give the fans
some new stuff to to to latch onto. So excited
to finally hit the road again later this summer, and

(03:53):
excited for the new music. Man, Oh nice, he will
be hitting the road. Oh good, good for you. Um
Uh the song where do you Want to Go? What's
the story behind it? We just we went to Vegas
about a month and a half ago and and uh
literally like sequested ourselves in in in the suite of
this of this hotel and created like our own little
you know, COVID bubble uh and just started working on

(04:13):
some new music. So we worked with these great guys
you know from from Missouri, great producers who were doing
the whole remix record. They're like, well, we have this
other song we think you guys should take listen to.
And I heard it, I was like, man, this is
a freaking smash and it's great for the summer. And
so really, you know, we weren't necessarily planning on it,
but we cut it right there and now we're putting
it out in July, so because I man, good for you. Well,

(04:33):
let's talk a little. Love is Blind. Season one was
the success. When are we getting season two? We're doing
it right now. Yeah, we're doing season two right now.
It's in production, and season three to follow shortly after that.
So yeah, I mean this was supposed to happen almost
a year ago, and with with COVID and everything, and
I you know, you got postponed. But um, first of all,

(04:54):
we were so psyched that everyone loved the show so
much and and uh and we're excited to get back
in there and do another another couple of seasons for everybody.
So yeah, it's coming, it's coming down the pipeline. It's
almost here. Okay, cool, cool, you get to do that here.
In l A, we did the so we did the pods,
you know in l A. The the part were they
they know date and all that stuff. But they cast

(05:15):
season two out of Chicago, so I'm actually getting on
a plane later today to flash Chicago to keep taping that.
Um and then season three was was cast at the
Dallas So it's kind of a combination of filming here
in l A filming in their hometown. So nice and
and uh, how are the kids, man? How old are
they now? Eight? Six and four? And uh? And they're great,

(05:35):
they're they're just got done with little league baseball season
and daughters in the horseback riding and the little guys
into everything he shouldn't be. Uh. So it's fun, man,
you know what it is. It's uh, it's it's a blast.
It always keeps you on your toes. You got two
boys and a girl, yeah, boy girl boy exactly. Okay,
yeah that's too. We got a girl boy boy, So

(05:56):
I'd say it's a it's a handful right there. Man.
And h Vanessa, I just uh, I think i'd read
a little while back on me have talked about on
my show too. She just got cast in the n
c I S Hawaii. Right, Yeah, that's awesome. She's a
lead in an n c I S y. So we'll
be we'll make making the pilgrimage to Honolulu here pretty soon.
Uh man. But yeah, I'm really proud of you, proud

(06:17):
of her and happy for her. This is you know,
for you know, for that franchise. I have a you know,
the first female lead that's a you know, badge of honor.
She gets carried now, so she's super psyched to be
doing it. And uh and I guess you know, we're
all all gonna be psyched to move to Hawaii. It
looks like, So that's okay, So you're getting the whole family.
That's awesome. Good for you. Yeah, I mean you know
how those shows were because she'll be in production, you
know or something, so I kind of have to pick

(06:40):
up steaks and move. Hey, there's worse places you can
be perfect casting too, because she looks very Hawaiian and
so it's that's perfect. Oh, please tell her congratulations for me.
That's awesome. Um. Before I let you go, Nick and
put you on the spot, quick questions, quick answers. All right,
all right, what are you currently watching on TV? Right now? Uh?
Currently watching um for All man Kind? For All man Kind?

(07:03):
Which is that one that the it's like is if
Russia one? That's the race to space. You know, it's
like revisionist history. It damn, there's so many shows. It's
like I always like if I don't hear about it before,
I was like, wow, okay, keep up, it is it is.
What's the song you wish you wrote? Oh gosh, Lucas

(07:24):
Graham seven years I just sang it on Mass Singer.
But it's one of my favorite songs. I wish I
was one. Who is your celebrity crush growing up? What's
some milana? Okay? Well we're the same made so that's
out to everyone, although it's changed for me now dramatically. Yeah,
I'm done growing up. What do you remember when you

(07:46):
think of the Summer of ninety eight? Who summer ninety eight?
Um gosh, I remember being on tour with the guys,
um literallye and on the road promoting. Um. I think
that was right when True to Your Heart came out
the movie Milan. We were out doing that for Disney
and our second record out. So yeah, it was all
mighty degrees all the time back in those days. Good

(08:08):
for you, man, Well, congratulations on everything Summer of ninety
eight drops on the Element, Nick, Thanks for checking in, brother, Yeah, man,
I always good to see it. Okay too, brother, take care.
