Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is on with Mario Lopez. Stop you on. Mario
Lopez joining me now on Zoom from the h G
t V show My Flipping Family, Willie and John mag
Welcome to the show, gentlemen. How are you good? Good yourself?
I'm doing well. I'm doing well. Thank you good. Thank
you for having us on. No my pleasure. I like
when you can mix um business with family. Keep that

(00:24):
money in the in the fan. Man, that's the way
where y'all from originally St. Louis, lou Okay, how did
you get into flipping homes? Uh? John? You want to
start this? You know? Um, Willie was making You're doing
good in the industry, making quite a bit of money

(00:46):
and doing commercials and things of that nature. Um. And
I came back to St. Louis from living in Los
Angeles for a few years, and I started to get
into real estate. I got my relatives license and I
had a conversation with Willie one day. I'm like, man,
what is it that you're doing with all this money?
And he was trying to you know, flying in and
you know, be a big boss and all that stuff.

(01:08):
And I was like, man, the real investment is houses.
I don't know what you're doing, you know, bring your
money back here to the home front and let's get
into you know, remodeling some of these homes. And we've
been doing that now for over five years and it's
been great. Yeah, it was. It was. It's interesting because

(01:28):
in the entertainment industry, because I do stand up comedy
and I've done like fifty national commercials, and we're not
talking about what to do with the money that we
make it, you know, all this because we think that
the money is always just going to roll the land.
So that was a time period when John was living
out here where I lost all my money and I
was sleeping on my little brother Jonathan's floor, and I

(01:52):
was like, man, if I ever get to bounce back,
I want to do something smarter with it. So then
I end up hitting a couple of nice commercials that
got me back on my feet. And that's when me
and him had that conversation. He's like, what are you
doing differently this time? And I was like, oh, man,
I gotta stacked up in the bank. He's like, that's
so dumb. If they bring that back to St. Louis

(02:12):
and let's start buying real estate, and so yeah, good
on you to make that adjustment and pivot, and you're right. Unfortunately,
they don't teach that at school, man at in any capacity.
When you make any kind of money, how you're what
are you? What you're supposed to do with it? That's
why you hear these stories of all these athletes who
make a ton of dough and the end of broke
a few years later. Now, what's your ultimate goal when

(02:35):
it comes to the show in the flipping business, well,
show wise and just the flipping business. What's cool about
is that they this is this is definitely something new
for a lot of viewers, just to be friend about it.
We're young and we're black, so you don't get to
see a lot of that on TV, especially h G
t V. So for them to give us this opportunity

(02:57):
to kind of just showcase what we're doing and just
the the whole aspect of it is remarkable. And then
on top of that, John and I are working on
a children's book. We're opening up we bought we started
jumping into buying a commercial real estate, so we're opening
a coffee shop this fall. So respect the hustle. That's awesome,

(03:18):
you guys. Great to hear it's it's inspirational. Um. I
know when I work with my family, whether it's my
wife and my kids or whatever, it's hard sometimes because
you want to throw down or you guys get into
certain beef. How do you let that be known on camera?
Or how do you handle them dynamics? Because the good
thing about it is like, no matter what he said,
gonna be your brother, so he can't get two kids,

(03:40):
you know what? And what I have to say is
sometimes I send Willie on store runs when I know
that they're out of stock in the whole city, and
and he'll be gone for like the rest of the day,
and it gives me the break that I need to
get some real work done. I got it. But honestly,
you there happen moments where you know, we we have

(04:02):
different opinions. That's that's normal, that's natural. You know. UM
a lot of times, honestly, our go to as our parents.
We've gone to touchial media. We kind of go back
to that role of mom, dad, the mediators. Yeah, they're
the mediators. And I mean the good thing is that
we worked through with fast. We keep our eyes on

(04:22):
the ultimate goal, obviously, which is to make a return
on our investment. So we we moved through those as
quickly as possible without shooting disrespect and you know, all
of that stuff across the table. So and then on
top of that, our mom, before we even started filming,
she made us sit down and talk to each other.
She's like, listen, you all are not going to embarrass

(04:44):
me while you all are on TV. So we're gonna
y'all are gonna promise you each other that you all
will not fight and all this other stuff and what mama, well,
Mama says, go so when you all are not going
to We was like, all right, yes, mate, but that
we do have difference of opinions sometimes. But it's interesting.
I got that kind of mom too, So I get it.

(05:05):
I get it. Um, Willie, you mentioned your econic you
talk about flapping homes on stedge. Oh, I'm writing all
about it right now. I'm I'm up at the laugh
Factory maybe twice a week now that either the one
in Hollywood or Long Beach. So I'm definitely developing that
entire set. Because one of the things the ideas, even
when we was pitching this show, Uh, John and I.

(05:27):
What what was interesting was people have this idea that
you need to have these like you need to have
like a million dollars to buy these homes because that's
what they're used to sing. Like, we bought this out
for five hundred thousands, for another two hundred thousand dollars
in and sold it for a million whatever, and so
people thought that we were millionaires. We're like, no, no, no,
we're just from We're just from the Midwest. You can

(05:49):
buy a whole house for like seven thousand dollars, ten
thousand dollars. So it's just different there. So I am
starting to talk about all of that on stage. Good good,
um b e T is bringing back college back in
the how that TV experience compared to the show you're
making Now, you know what's so crazy. I just had

(06:11):
this conversation. It's night and day. It's night and day
because BT the College Hill was the very first black
reality show, before all the love and hip Hops, before
the Basketball Wives and all of that other stuff. It
was College Hill. So it was very a huge It
was a huge dynamic For those that don't know, College
Hill was pretty much the b ET version of the

(06:33):
Real World. So I just moved out here maybe two
years part before I was on that show, and it
was different because we are preachers kids, our dad's a pastor.
So to be into to be thrown into that type
of limelight, like one day I'm, you know, just like
hanging out or whatever. I'm a regular person, and the
next day I'm hanging out with like Little Wayne's kids.

(06:55):
Or I knew Chris Brown and Rihanna at the time
when they were together, and it was a very different experience.
So to take that type of knowledge and now, but
fifteen years later, bring that type of idea to uh
h G t V because what happened was and Gen
wad Uh kind of attested this is. I used to

(07:16):
film every time we bought a house. I would go
to St. Louis and I will be only social media wise,
just be like, yeah, we bought another house to mcboyds
doing it, and John will be annoyed by He's like,
I am trying to get work done when you stop filming,
and I'm like, John, we gotta film this because this
is gonna be real popular one day, and I told
him to trust me, and so one day I posted

(07:37):
these videos on Instagram and on YouTube and production companies
started reaching out to It's like Oh my goodness, do
do you do? You all have a deal? Or where
are you all at? And all this other stuff. So
because of that exposure and the stuff that I learned
from when I was on College Hill before, I brought
that over to just the home flipping aspect and I

(07:57):
am now able to just throw that on social media
to understand how it worked. Smart man way to part
lay it that. I really, I bet your parents are
proud right there. Um, you guys married yourself, y'all got
kids or I do? My son actually turned twenty years
old last month. Twenty years old? When you when you
were like you barely look thirty yourself? How do you player?

(08:22):
You were young school when I had my son? Pretty young? Wow? Okay, okay,
so only one? Yeah, so I just had I have
the one, got you got you got you okay? And
so other than that, you single. Other than that, yes, sir,
all day. That's a good time to be single right now.

(08:44):
Um listen, I think the show is great. I love
the family aspect and it's inspirational and you guys seem
like a cool, fun guy. So congrats on that. Check
out My Flipping Family on a g t V and
Hulu Willie John, thanks for checking in, man, thank you,
thank you. We have a go. You gotta take care
