Speaker 1 (00:01):
Phonelan Elvis Duran's phone tap. All right, here we go.
One of our listeners is an unbelievable actress. Wait till
you hear her on this phone tap. The letter came
in from Felicia. Felicia said, Dear Elvis Duran, here's the deal.
When my mom goes out shopping, she tends to accidentally
leave things in the carriage and walk out of the

(00:23):
store without paying.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Huh.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
She used to only do this at the supermarket, but
now she accidentally does it at the toy store in
the drug store too. Please keep in mind, and it's
not like we don't have enough money to buy these things.
Mom does this because she doesn't like paying for things.
She recently swiped sunburned spray because it was new and
she wanted to try it without paying the eight dollars.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
So here's my idea. Why don't we call her up
and tell her that you know what she's doing and
maybe we can scare some sense into her. This comes
to us from Felicia. Felicia is going to rat out
her mother live on a phone tap. All right, Dave
Brody's going to be calling the mom as the manager
of the drug store that saw her stealing, and then
Felicia's going to join in later on the call. Let's

(01:04):
listen it.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Hello, Laurie, it's not please speaking, Laurie. This is Dave over.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
You're a relatively frequent customer of ours, are you not?

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yes? I am?

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Is there anything anything you want to tell me there, Laurie?

Speaker 2 (01:20):
No, No, I don't understand what you're talking about.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Anything involving your baby carriage.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
That you might want to mention my baby carriage.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
You have a notice, Laurie that we have security cameras
all over the store.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
I don't know what you're talking about.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
I think you know what I'm talking about, Laura.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
I have no idea what you're talking about.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Lauria.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
You have a tendency to take the old five finger
discount when you shop in our store. I know the scams.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
Well, I won't be shopping there now that you're harassed
me over the phone here, you just lost the customer
that does pay everything.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
You don't steal nail polace from us Nope, okay, And
you didn't steal suthe the cane from US.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
I don't know what you're talking about.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
And you don't steal baby products.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
No, I don't.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
I've got six can store I have.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
You. You better take a look at me paying for it.
If you got my name and you got my information,
then take a look at me paying for it. I know.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
She sounds pretty convinced that she doesn't steal. All right,
let's call her back and you talk to him. Okay,
all right, hold on, here we go.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Hello mom. Yeah, what's up. I'm gonna stay here.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
I'm not gonna go home to get anything to eat.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Okay, I'll talk to you later. Wait what, mom? I'm
freaking out? Why what happened?

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Some day?

Speaker 2 (02:29):
I called the house the other day. I told him
that you take stuff, that I take stuff. Because he's like,
I had her own camera. He's like, I'm gonna call him.
I'm gonna come to the house. Well, I'm just called before.
What are you talking about? You know?

Speaker 3 (02:42):
He called me yesterday night, and I'm freaking out now because.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
What talk tonight? I told him that you do things.
You told them that I take things.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
Because Mommy said he had your on camera.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
And you say, yeah, my mom takes things. He's like,
I know what she takes.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
And then I'm like, I don't know what you're talking
on I camera.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Oh that's nice. You're ratting me out. Okay, that's nice.
So when they come to the house to arrest me,
you could thank yourself for telling them what I took. Okay,
thank you very much. Because he called me and he
told he was bull all over the phone with me
and I had to hang up. He's gonna come with
the police and arrest me. Feeling nail polished that I
wasn't unaware of until I left the store, right, I

(03:25):
didn't know I had. I knew I put it on
my carriage and forgot about it when I left the store.
It was in the carriage. How much this leive you?
What are you talking about? Leave me alone? Mom?

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Than you?

Speaker 3 (03:41):
So I'll call it back. Hello.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Why are you hanging up on me?

Speaker 2 (03:45):
Because you were driving me crazy? Sell And if you
don't leave me alone right now, I'm gonna push you
right against the wall. I don't want to hear it
no more. Okay, no, please, you hop it right now.
And you're pissing me off. Okay. So you want to
talk to a neighbor come home. I gave him myself.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
I'm listening.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Oh this is just lovely. Okay, you don't come home
and say to me. Don't talk to me over the phone.
Good mind.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Hello, Hello, Lourie.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Don't I don't know what's what you guys want. If
I did something, I did it on accident. I don't
know what you want.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Listen. I just spoke to Kenny, my assistant manager. Your
daughter says that you steal all the time. That's what
she told Kenny.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Oh she did say that, that's correct. I don't know
about that.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Don't get an attitude with me.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
You're cooling and harassing me. If there's anything further you
have to do, go right and do it. What else
do you want? Let me just say it right here.
Tell me what you want, okay, because I don't have
time for this conversation.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Now.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
This is going a little too far and it's getting
very aggravating.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
Yeah, I stay on the tape. You're pretty cute.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
What do you want from me?

Speaker 3 (04:49):
What do you say? You come down here and I
tell you you're part of your phone tap?

Speaker 2 (04:55):

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
