The Column

The Column

Martin Hesp has won numerous awards for his columns in the Western Morning News - the main daily newspaper in South West England,. The columns now also appear in other papers. For the most part what Martin attempts to do is paint a picture of modern rural life - it's highs and lows, its idiosyncrasies and funny moments, its sadnesses and something of the everyday weft and weave that comes of living in the British countryside. He also sometimes uses the rural perspective as a prism through which to observe the big events of the day.

In this column Martin thinks about how it would be to talk to the people who lived in his remote Exmoor cottage over 200 years ago. How would they react to him telling them about all the information technology inside the house today? Would they even begin to understand the power of the tech-giants who run things like Facebook or Google? One thing they would have had, though, would have been a more certain and stable future.

In this episode of The Column, Martin discusses how he and many others felt when Brexit Party members of the EU decided to turn their backs on a youth orchestra in the European Parliament. He argues that the UK ought to be on its very best behaviour during these uncertain times, not showing the world how childish and puerile some of its citizens can be.

In his column this week Martin Hesp ponders the idea of getting old and out of date when it comes to having a knowledge of all the latest, new, things in the world. He wrote the column just before he went on a press trip to Vienna with a group of young journalists - so did the experience allow him to shed the mantle of being old?

In this episode of The Column Martin explores the idea of being an outsider - which he argues is what journalists are as they go about the world dropping in on other people's lives. On the whole down in the Westcountry, Martin finds himself being met with a warm welcome - whether he's judging cheeses or cooking up a storm in a culinary class - which makes him wonder why people can't be more polite to one another during ...
