(00:24):
It's the Herd wherever you may be and however you
may be listening Fox Sports Radio iHeartRadio FS one. Five
minutes Antoine Walker stop by. He's great. We've got a
bunch of NBA stuff getting close to the All Star Game.
Heard brought to you by Jersey Mike Subs be a
sub above. So, first of all, I don't like being labeled.
(00:46):
I'm a hater for anything. It's one of the few
things that bothers me. I think I had context to stuff,
and I don't like this thing about this whole label.
You don't like Baker Mayfield Joey Taylor as my witness
on this show. I said I wouldn't draft him a
little bit too much off the field nonsense. But he's
a franchise Quarterback's not mine. I said, his ceiling is
(01:07):
lower than everybody is saying. But he's a franchise quarterback.
His comp is not Drew Breese, that's stupid. His comp
is a better Case Keenum, to which people were outraiged,
and I said, Case Keenum went like eleven and three
one year when he had a good Minnesota team. Case
Keenom complays one of the best backups in the league.
Baker's better than Case Keenum, but they have similarities physically.
They don't have a huge arm. Baker's got a better
(01:29):
arm than Case. They're not great athletes, they don't have
big size, but the guys can ball. Baker's better than him.
But that's his camp. By the way, when I said that,
I had a GM text mean he's like, you're right
on that. Nobody will ever give you credit. So yesterday
Kevin Stefanski came out and he said, I think Baker's
just going to get better and better and better. And
my takeaways, No, what you saw last year is his ceiling,
(01:51):
and it ain't a bad ceiling. He had the highest
graded offensive line, the best running back duo, and they
had an easy schedule. They went eight. No. Again, it's
the awful NFC East and the mostly awful and dysfunctional
AFC South eight no. The other eight games, they went
three and five, and he completed fifty nine percent of
(02:16):
his throws. Against the NFC East and AFC South, he
was eight no fourteen t these two picks. So this
year Cleveland schedule gets way tougher. They faced Kansas City away,
They're at Pittsburgh, at Baltimore. Cincinnati will be better. They
(02:36):
gotta go and go at the Chiefs, at the Chargers,
at the Packers, at New England and no more, no
more Giants, Eagles, nonsense. So what I said is, if
you look at Baker's numbers last year, they're put them
up again. And you look at Case Keenum's best year ever,
same thing, same guy. That's it. That's all I've ever said.
(03:00):
Now Baker is better than Case Keenan. But that is
what I said. As comp was, everybody was saying, Drew Brees,
you're sitting his comp's one of the eight best quarterbacks
ever played football. That's stupid, not Drew Brees. They're never
gonna be another Drew Brees. There never gonna be a
never gonna be another five eleven and a half six
foot quarterbacks, the most accurate quarterback ever to throw football.
It's not gonna have it again. So anyway, I when
(03:22):
I saw this yesterday and I heard this, Oh this,
he's gonna get a lot better. Remember the minute you
pay Baker. You can't have both running backs. You can't
have the best graded offensive line. You can't have the
most underrated wide receiver in the NFL, Jarvis Landry, who's
just unbelievable. By the way, the backup tight end David
and Joeku now wuns out. You can't have all these
stars on offense. And also because the defense is so
(03:44):
bad on the back end, Baker's always in these shootouts.
You can't have Baker dropping back. Last year when Cleveland
asked Baker to carry the team, when they said throw
the ball thirty five times or more, he was one
and four. So this again, Joy is here. There is
not a shot at Baker. Let's let's contextualize this. It's
(04:06):
not a shot. I'm just saying what I've always said.
He's a franchise quarterback. His ceiling is lower than all
the nonsense on the interweb. Well, if you don't pour
praise on someone anymore, then you're automatically a hater. That's
that's the world we live in. If it's just not Yeah,
it's like it's like four unbelievable players in the NFL,
(04:28):
like four Arrius Leonards on our show yesterday, He's unbelievable.
George Kittle unbelievable, Moms Rogers like four got five guys
no league unbelievable. That's how goes all right, I don't
think you're a hater. Kohn, thank you, very supportive. It's nice,
you know, I uh, it's just very troubling sometimes. You know,
Cleveland takes a lot of shots that mean it's very personal,
(04:50):
it's very painful. Let we move on, all right. Antoine
Walker played twelve years in the NBA, lives in one
of my favorite American city, Chicago. He is now joining.
So are you surprised, I don't know. I never heard
your opinion on Zion. I love Zion in the college.
Are you kind of surprised how good he is and
(05:11):
how popular he is? Antoine, this quickly. The popularity doesn't
surprise me. He had a lot of popularity coming out
of high school, so I think that that didn't surprise
me skill wise and basketball wise, yes, because he's under
size powerful. We haven't seen a guy like this since
probably Charles Barkley that's able to finish around the basket
(05:34):
at his size. But the thing with me was Zion
is I need him to take the Lebron James approach
to his body. And I mean, if it's a million
and a half, if it's two million, to put into
his body, to get the right people around him consistently.
Sky's a lemmit. He can't be the face of the league.
But if he doesn't take that approach, this can be
(05:57):
short lived, you know, three four years maybe, because he
plays above the rim and every year it can be
a problem if he doesn't keep himself in unbelievable shape.
So the jury is still out. But he's really really good,
more skills, more skills than I thought he had, and
he's unbelievable around the basketball finishing. Let me give you
(06:18):
another young guy before we get onto bigger issues. I
didn't think LaMelo ball. I thought he looked skinny. I
thought he was a lot of sizzle nosteak. I can't
believe how good he is. Are you surprised by him?
I think it's that did a great job by lett
him go Overseas. He by him going over that, I
think it can slow this game down, made him even
(06:38):
a more pure point guard. And he's got that certain
swag about himself. You know, he's got the swag to
be a great player in this league. And he's starting
to now coming to his own. But I just think
going Overseas was so huge for him playing against those
guys and then get into the league where his game
is a little bit more polished. But he's got the
(06:59):
swag called him be great. He's gonna get it done. Yeah.
So I said this a couple of days ago to
start my show, is that very few players Chris Paul's
one of them, Lebron's one of them. They're not only
great players, they change your culture. D Wade was a
kind of a player like that. I mean, you just
got tougher with d Wade. He demanded it the way
(07:19):
he worked and Kali Leonard went to San Antonio, but
the culture Antoine was already set. He was icing on
a good cake. He goes to Toronto. Kyle Lowry was
the leader. The cake was good. He was the icing.
They went into a bunch of games. He goes to
the Clippers, and the cake's not good yet, and they
expect him to not only be a great player, but
(07:39):
to be a culture setter and doesn't talk much. He
misses a lot of games, load management, He lives down
in San Diego, comes to practice late, and I'm sitting here, Antoine,
I'm thinking he's a great player, but I'm not sure
he's a guy had build my culture around. Is that
fair on Kauai? I think you hit it on the head.
I think it's a high percent fair. A guy that
(08:02):
doesn't really speak out a lot, that doesn't show a
lot of leadership, and I think that's where the separation
comes when you think about Lebron James and the Steph curries.
Even though Steph has Draymond Green who's more vocal, but
you gotta think you gotta get guys to gravitate to you.
So he still took a page out of Lebron James.
But one thing Lebron does a good job of, it's
not just on the court, it's off the court, getting
(08:24):
to know the guys, going to dinners, having functions, and
that's why players gravitate to Lebron James. And he hits
it off immediately what Kauhi does not do that he
goes into us bubble, his shell doesn't really talk to
a lot of people. I think with the Clippers, it's
more about their staff that's going to build a culture.
I think t Lew I think obviously adding Chauncey Billups,
(08:45):
you see a lot of young players that are not
far from the game that's on I mean on T
Lou's staff. They're building the culture there and I think
you want Paul George and Kauai to do it, but
it's not a Kauai's DNA and it's something that's just
not going to happen. And they decision to make in
the all season and one not just the guy you
want to spend the next three or four years with us,
(09:05):
see if he can get you a tighter So we've
we've talked today about the Phoenix suns emergence and Chris Paul.
Is that I take Lebron out. I'm not sure a
guy is guaranteed wins that he comes to your club
more than Chris Paul. He's not flashy, he's not vertical,
he's not always likable, he's not cool, he doesn't shoot threes.
(09:25):
But I'll tell you at the end of the day.
I mean he everywhere he goes. I mean Phoenix was
not Phoenix was terrible. For the last three years they
had him another second best in the West. Did you
ever play with a guy like Chris Paul that maybe
wasn't the most skilled Antoine and Chris is certainly talented,
but he just made the team better. He was vocal,
He got after guys, he would dog because the guy.
(09:48):
You know, most players don't want to get another guy's
faces Chris will. Can you compare him to anybody you
played around or with? I can't really compare him nobody
I play with. But you know, he reminds me of
what I had cost battles with Jason Kiddy, where it's
just a winner wherever he goes, knows how to win.
And their traditional point guards. Chris Paul is one of
(10:10):
the last traditional point guards that we got in the league.
You know this new age point guards. I would say
in two thousand and eight when the Derek Rose, the Westbrooks,
those guys came in with a more scoring guards, Damon Lillard,
Steph Curry. Those guys came in as more scoring guards,
not traditional point guards. Chris Paul's the last traditional point guard.
But what makes Chris great it's his fourth quarter. If
(10:31):
you ever watch the fourth quarters of teams he's been on,
he gets the ball to the right people. He's capable
of making a big shot, making the big play, the
decision making. He becomes another coach on the floor. And
that's what separates Chris Paul. If he doesn't get hurt
in Houston, he probably leads them to the finals. I
don't know if he's missus beat on getting to the finals.
I don't know if he can take this young team
(10:52):
there with the Clippers and the Lakers in the Western Conference.
But definitely a first time battle Hall of Famer, one
of the biggest winners we've had in this league. But
just a traditional throwback guard that we don't see much anymore.
I will say this, They've condensed the schedule, and I
think it's really helped Brooklyn because I think they're so
(11:12):
gifted offensively, Antoine that when they walk into your town,
you don't have time for extra practice or film study,
and they're just too damn good offensively, and you know
that the switches you'd have to make, you just you need.
I don't know if they'll be as great when they
play a team six times in two weeks, but when
you walk them into town with all this offense and
(11:33):
you don't have much practice time, I don't. I think
they're a handful that that feels like some of their
success or do you see them? Do you think Brooklyn's
good enough to win the championship? I got them to
win the championship right now. I think they're unbelievable. I
don't think as many teams in the league they can
get to one twenty one twenty five in a seven
game series. And when you get into a seven game series,
(11:55):
you gotta have superstars. You gotta have guys that can
step up and have those big moments in big nights.
They got three guys that can do that. Snow the
team can do that. This is a very unique offensive
group with unbelievable offensive power. I know defensively they can
struggle at times, but most teams in this league cannot
get the one twenty one twenty five, and most teams
(12:17):
in this league don't have guys that can mostiply get
you forty on any given night. They're gonna be a
handful of come playout time. I got them right now.
When they are barn any injury and if they go
into the playoffs healthy, the Brooklyn Nets will be cutting
down the nets. Wow, Antoine Walker in beautiful Chicago? Is
it still cold in Chicago? What's I like in Chicago today?
(12:38):
Like forty eight and sunny? Necker, We're okay, forty eight
and sunny. No forty eight and sunny, no snow. That's it.
Might as well just take a shirt off walk around
town in Chicago. That's good weather. I take it. Good
seeing you man, Thanks having me show good stuff today.
Also basically jets just announcing here today, will take calls
(12:59):
on Sam Arnold Washington. John Lynch liked him Chicago. At
the end of the show today, I'm gonna, first of all,
tell you about the greatest ice cream in the history
of the planet. The second thing I'm gonna tell you about,
I'm gonna predict who starts for these thirteen fourteen teams.
(13:19):
I feel very strongly about this going right out. There
are people banging on me on Twitter about Baker already
after seeing me. I'm sure they I haven't seen you are.
They're so unfortunate he came on the show. I think
it's so weird. It'd be one thing if I was inaccurate,
but I'm always right on it. This is havn't strangely
(13:40):
on point with the Cleveland predictions, all of them always
all right. Stuff is hurtful. One more Herd. The Herd

Birds on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcast, or wherever you
get your podcast from. Saturday, on Fox, a crucial Big
East doubleheader tips off at two thirty Eastern as number
ten Villanova faces Providence, followed by number fourteen Crayton sitting
(14:48):
on Butler. The league's top two contenders looked to gain
some steam heading into the Big East Tournament. That's Saturday
on Fox and the Fox Sports Idea. I like Villanova,
they do it the right way. Jersey my Month of Giving.
They're raising money for over two hundred charities. They've been
doing this forever. It's great. You can help by visiting
any Jerseymike's local store or go to Jerseymikes dot com.
(15:11):
Jerseymikes dot com. Jerseymikes be a sub above. So I
thought this was interesting, the JJ Watt move. There are
certain cities, there's certain businesses, there's certain industries. You just
have to be aggressive. You know, there's there's a lot
of businesses you don't have to be really aggressive, but
you know, you moved to a big city. Maybe it's
real estate, multiple bidders on properties. You got to be
(15:31):
aggressive in certain city. In LA you'd like a house,
they're gonna be bidders on it, especially with the interest
rates low and the SEC Football is like this, like
Gene Chizick when a national title at Auburn two years later.
They fired him. Ed Orzron a year ago when a
national title last year five and five. If he went
five and seven this year, they'd fire it. That's just
the way it is. PAC twelve's not like that. Clay
(15:52):
Helton last three years, eighteen thirteen. No, we can hurry.
It's just different. It's the PAC twelve. You can give
a coach another year or two. The fans don't go crazy.
You're not in talk shows getting clappered every day. We
got pro sports out here in the South at Orgeron loses.
All you do as an athletic directors drive to work
and listen to the radio shows crush you and your
(16:14):
family all day. So it's different. It's very interesting about
JJ Watt to Arizona. Look at what is happening in
the NFC West, the best division in football. It is
an arms race. So Arizona in the last couple of
years drafted Kyler Murray a year after Josh Rosen. Big move.
They traded for DeAndre Hopkins. Huge move. They signed JJ Watt.
(16:36):
These are huge moves. The Rams go get Brandon Cooks.
They trade for Jalen Ramsey, huge move. They trade for
Matthew Stafford given up multiple number one picks. The Niners
trade for Jimmy Garoppolo at work, got him to a
Super Bowl. They traded for Richard Sherman. That was a
smart move from Seattle. He's been great. They made a
move for D four, didn't work out. The Seahawks huge
(16:58):
move for Jamal Adams and also traded for Carlos Dunlap.
I would say it made their defense better. No division.
These are massive moves. J J. Watt, DeAndre Hopkins, Jalen Ramsey,
Matt Stafford, Jimmy g Richard Sherman, Jamal Adams, these are
massive moves. Keep your eye on San Francisco. So Seattle
(17:18):
went big last year, Arizona just went big. Rams went
big with Stafford, and keep your eye in San Francisco.
Multiple rumors about Jimmy Garoppolo. The Jets announced today we
will take calls on Sam Darnold, just saying this is
the sec of the NFL. I mean a lot of
(17:38):
these moves. You're giving up multiple first round picks. Keep
your eye on the Niners. Two days ago we got
a Teddy Bridgewater rumor with the Niners. The Jets are
now saying call us on Arnald this division, this is
a reality of it. You have to be aggressive in
this division. It's just too good. You've got to make moves.
(18:00):
Got a lot of young gms in this division. Two
Lynch is young, John Snyder's young, Less, Nida is young,
Steve Kim is young. These are goal for it guys.
These are not old school gms. Joy with the news, No,
no turn on the news. This is the herd line
News Swell, starred by Mercedes Beats the Best or Nothing
(18:22):
NBA All Stars approaching and the NBA announced the players
participating in the Skills Challenge, Street Point Contest, and Dunk
Contest at the All Star Game on Sunday. Robert Covington,
Luca don Chich, Chris Paul, Julius Randall, Demontes Sabonis, and
Nikola Vusovich Ukovich will take place take part in the
Skills Challenged. Then Devin Booker, Jalen Brown, Steph Curry, Zach Levine,
(18:45):
Donovan Mitchell, and Jason Tatum are in the three point Contest.
I love I love that Steph Curry is in that.
He's just saying because Lebron won't do the dunk contest,
but Steph's like, all get them, the shooting contest, I's
gonna be great, and both of those will take place
before the game. Then at halftime they're doing the dunk
contests with Anthony Simmons, cash As Stanley, and Obie topping
a bit. Yeah, yeah, three guys, guys, let's just get well,
(19:09):
they're doing it at a halftime so they don't have
a long time to do it because they want, you know,
they don't want fans in the arena. And they're doing
all of this, you know, in the same night, whereas
normally for All Star the skills contest, the three point
shooting contest, and the dunk contests are on the night
before and then you have so you have the celebrity game,
then you have the all of this on one night,
(19:31):
and then you have the actual game on Sunday. I
like this out the weekend usually goes by condensing it.
I like the fact that Chris Paul, who's going to
be a Hall of Famer at the near the end
of his career, is ready to go up against the
young guys. I love that, and I love Steph Curry's like,
all right, take me on, I'm an I'm an All
Star game. Person. I don't really love the Pro Bowl
because it's a topic. It can be awful difficult to
(19:52):
kind of have an exhibition NFL game. Very few things
about the NFL sting Pro Bowl and preseason not good,
no good. It's not my favorite. But I do love
MLB All Star I'm a huge home Run Derby fan.
I know you don't really love I'm not in the Derby,
but I love the game. First three innings, when you
get all these classic matchups are great. Yeah, and the
All Star Game. I think the MLB All Star Game
(20:13):
is really fun. But I love the Home Run Derby
and the Skills Contest. I went last year. It was
in Chicago. It was quite cold, but it was a
great weekends. And I don't know, I just think it's
fun to watch these. I'm a little disappointed about the
dunk contest not having Zion, but you know they're they're
doing it at a halftime. We'll see how it goes.
So Tom Brady was clearly enjoying his time at the
Super Bowl boat parade, and he said on The Late
(20:36):
Late Show with James Cordon that he didn't really think
about what he was doing before he threw the Lombardi Trophy.
I was not thinking at that moment there it was
this seems like really fun to do. And then I
found out later that had they had that been an
incomplete pass, that would have went down like eighteen eighty.
(21:01):
I don't know about eighty, but oh my god. You know,
it's funny about that. It's amazing what beer can do
to you. Um, everything seems he was always on tequila.
I don't know. I don't remember the videos of what
he was partaking, but yeah, he was. Obviously. It was
really fun to see him like loose and drunk. I know.
There was like a whole conversation about whether this was
(21:21):
appropriate or not, which is like they drink beer out
of the Stanley cup. Calm down, by the way, there's
not one of these, Like do you think they just
like share. It's like the owner has one in his office,
the coach has one in his office. Like they make
multiple trophies. It's not just like one one trophy. It
was I don't know. I enjoyed it, but I like
(21:42):
Shenanigans and they won, Like why shouldn't he look at
his reaction, He's just like why he caught it? Though,
I will say that like, it would have been really
clunky had he dropped it, but you know it's it's
the goat. He can get it that far. It was.
That was a that was a fun scene. Um good
for Tampa, a city that had done a lot right
(22:03):
through the years. They draft good players, they'd had good coaches,
They've done they really they sell their stadium out. They
could never get the quarterback right. They were the last
team in the NFL that didn't ever have a star quarterback.
Everybody's got one. Even Chicago had said, luckman, everybody's got one.
And when I was there in Tampa, we had tons
of good players, Sam White, we always had good We
(22:25):
always had great players. We just he couldn't quite get
the quarterback thing dialed in, and they finally did so.
The Texans are holding firm and they want to keep
to Shaun Watson despite his request to be traded. Houston
did grant J. J. Watt his wish to be released,
and he is now happy in Arizona, and Watt just
wants to Shawn to find the same happiness that he has.
I love de Shann We speak often. He's an incredible player,
(22:48):
but he's an incredible person. The one thing I want
for de Shaun Watson's fan to be happy. He deserves
it and I want him to be happy. So whatever
that looks like for him, that's what I want for him.
That was nice, nice thing to say. We all want
to Sean to be happy. We also all want to
Shaan to be in a place where he can actually
fulfill his full potential. I've been on this for years
because I have for years disliked the way that the
(23:11):
Texans do business. I thought it was a huge mistake
to make Phill O'Brien the coach and the GM and
it all started for there From me, I want to
Sean to get to get out of there. But what
I think people are missing with Deshaun, and it's kind
of starting to happen with Russell Wilson as well. Although
I wouldn't define the Seahawks as a dysfunctional organization the
way that I would the Texans, but it's a communication issue,
(23:36):
and it's an ego issue. And we talk about egos
all the time and how they break down organizations and
companies and dynasties all the time. And then we have
amazing documentaries about all the things that went on behind
the scenes, and it was a massive part of what
happened with Chicago and the Last Dance. It was about egos.
That's really what broke it down at the end. At
the end of the day, like we could be solved
(23:56):
in a simple conversation, unravels the greatest dynasty in sports
that we're talking about twenty years later. But when you
first go to an organization or a company and you're
a young talent, right, they take a chance on you.
Shaun Watson is a very high pick. There's not a
huge chance. Russell Wilson obviously developed into that. But you
owe that, owe that company to work hard to develop
(24:18):
your talents and become your full potential. Right. This is
an o period. It's why you don't make as much
money when you started a company. But then you hit
your full potential and then the responsibility flips and then
it's on the company to provide the platform to maximize
your talent boom. Let's say, let's be generous and say
(24:38):
there's fifteen quarterbacks on Earth in the league that could
win a Super Bowl. I could truly lead their team
to Super Bowl. That's generous. It's close to that though, No, No,
Matt Ryan led Late. I think you're I think thirteen
to fifteen reasonable. Let's say fifteen. That means there are
fifteen men walking planet out of the three plus billion
(25:01):
people that live on Earth that can do that job.
Fifteen fifteen may not be that many, right, I mean
generous fifteen. Once they reached their full potential, it's on you,
as an organization or platform or company to maximize their potential.
They no longer owe you. They worked through their youth,
they developed into what they are, and now you need
(25:22):
to maximize what they do through communication, through personnel, through coaching,
through GM decisions. That's on you and that's what everyone,
to me is missing with the Shaun Watson he should
have the ability to get out of this contract and
go somewhere where he can be maximized. Yeah. I totally
agree with this. By the way, very well said thank
you Joey Taylor with the news. Well that's the news,
(25:46):
and thanks for stopping by the herd Line. Jeff Darlington's
a very good reporter, he said. Deshaun Watson trade rumors,
speaking of de Jaun the Bears. Keep your eye on
the Bears is what Jeff says. He's right. In a
bunch of stuff. But you know what the Bears are
to me, they're actually I mean, it goes back to
my childhood. The Bears are the Bulls. For a brief
(26:09):
time in the history of their organizations, they may have
had the best team ever. For six years, the Bulls
were the best team arguably ever. I think they were
my whole childhood. Seventies early eighties. They made the playoffs,
they won one playoff series. They were they were on
nothing Burger, nobody talked about the Chicago Bears may have
(26:30):
had the best football team in the best football season
all time, dit cut they had like two to three
years outside of that. They can't get the quarterback right.
When it comes to the Bears, they're the Bulls. I
never really trust their front office. They never really feel
like a championship team, and they never land the free agent.
They feel like the same team the Cubs don't. The
(26:52):
Cubs were losers and now they're winners. The Blackhawks always
feel like they matter. Go back to Stan Nikita, They've
always mattered. But White Sox they've always got talent, don't
win much, won the series wants, I think in recent memory.
But when it comes to the Bears and the Bulls
the same team. They can never just land the free agent.
(27:12):
They've had this brief moment when both were probably the
best team ever. And that's saying something. To be the
best team in the history in the NFL, to be
the best team in the history of the NBA, I'd
make the argument as about as good as I've ever seen.
I mean that that Bears team with Didka at defense,
it was just it looked like Alabama, like they just
you couldn't score. He couldn't get first downs on him.
Miami was the only team to beat him that year.
(27:33):
I think on Monday Night football they destroyed everybody, just roll.
I don't get what the record was. I know Miami
once went undefeated. The Dolphins, they weren't as good as
the Bears. The Bears, like it was like it was
like a dominant college team. It was like Clemson in
the ACC. You couldn't get first downs. It was ridiculous.
And the Bulls are everybody talks about their offense. The
Michael Jordan Bulls were the best offensive team and the
best defensive team, and the best coach team. And they
(27:54):
had the best player and the best duo and the
best rebounder and the best They would just I've said
this before Golden State when they had Steph and Clay
and Durant probably number two. But in the end, Michael
Jordan and the Bulls would have just pushed them around
the floor. They were so much more physical, they were
so intimidating. The Bulls were the toughest team, the most
clutch team, the best offensive team, the best coach team,
the best defensive deean, the best read bet. They were everything.
(28:16):
But in the end, they hissed My child Go back
to my childhood is never trust the Bears Bulls front office.
So I read this story and I think to myself,
you know, the Bears have the worst passer rating in
NFL history, dead series history of the league. Chicago Bears
have the worst passer rating. Just go get Shaun Watson,
(28:38):
just go fix it. Just just go fix it. They won't.
I just Jeff Darlington trust him, can't trust they'll pull
it off. They won't. They've never been able to figure
it out. Never trust him. Trust the Cubs more today, Blackhawks,
not the Bears, and the Bulls just don't our next
(28:58):
Terrell Owens t os in the last hour of the show,
alot of tension on that. I haven't heard much from
him in the year. Has he settled down? Gott he's
doing well now? Is he is doing the line? Now? Oh? Boy?
Is he gonna sell the wine on the show? Better
be good. If he's trying to throw a seventy two
on our fastball pass me, I'll be right after him.
So we've got TiO coming up on the show and
(29:20):
coming up next. I have him on about once a year.
He's as good a draft guy lanzerline as you have
he's been. He's been doing this for a long time
NFL Network. He's terrific on this stuff and his track
record is fantastic, and he's going to be joining us next.

They know their stuff. Hustlerturf dot Com hustlerturf dot com.
So years and years ago, I found Lance Zeroline on
(30:43):
the www. Bandwidth dot com. I found him on the
interweb and he was this guy I never heard of him.
He was doing radio in Houston and his dad coach
in the NFL. And I found his draft stuff fantastic
and how accurate it was, and I'm like, I gotta
bring this guy in the show. I'm always looking for
people that can ate the show. Lance really knows his stuff,
really knows his stuff. He's been covering the draft for
(31:05):
twenty years. The NFL Network finally found him, and now
he's b works over there. He's joining us. Now live
lanz Zerne. All right, let's let's start with this. I'll
just say it. I trust my eyes. Zach Wilson looks
skinny by U quarterback. I saw him against you taught twice.
He was worse the second time. I'm a little bit
of a skeptic, but I know Josh Allen at Wyoming,
(31:27):
I was a mess when I watched him against Iowa
and Oregon. And then he comes into the NFL and
he looks great. So give me the book on Zach Wilson.
Like him not? What are your eyes? What does your
experience tells you? Well? I like him, but I don't
like him as much as everyone else apparently does. I
gave him a six point five by Hopefully my grades
will be out soon on NFL dot com. But six
point five is a boom bus grade. And I think
(31:49):
he's a guy that when you see the arm talent,
you like the arm talent. You like his ability to
improvise and throw on the move and create some things.
It's it's clear when you watch him that Aaron Rodgers
was his favorite quarterback growing up. And that's true. But
you know the guy that I see and he hates this.
But the guy that I see, and this is not
a slam as, I see some Johnny Manziel in his game.
And what I mean by that is he likes for
(32:11):
plays to go off schedule sometimes because he feels unencumbered
when it goes off schedule. Now, Kenny work on schedule, absolutely,
but when you go back and look at twenty nineteen tape,
there's some really problematic decision making going on. There's some
throws that he absolutely shouldn't make. And then you go
back and look at this year's tape, and yeah, he
clearly improved. However, I would also point out that his
(32:32):
level of competition was much lower, and when he faced
the most competitive team that he saw last year, which
was Coastal Carolina, that's where he struggled. So I'm not
as all in. And you mentioned Josh Allen Alan had
special size athletic ability in a crazy arm, I don't
think Zach Wilson has those same characteristics. To be honest. Okay,
(32:56):
the kid that I can't get over, and I said,
I've watched one tape of him, the train Lance kid
at North Dakota State. He looks. He doesn't look he
looks like Kyle Pitts it tight end. That kid just
looks like he's gonna be a Hall of Famer. Train Lance.
You watch his tape and you're like, oh my god,
mel kayperson. It was the most fascinating prospect he's seen
(33:18):
in forty years. What do you make of him? You know,
it's interesting because I remember watching, obviously Carson Wentz when
he came out, and the first thing that stood out
to me was that North Dakota State rank kind of
a pro style passing attack, and Carson Wentz was a
full field reader. Then I get to Trey Lance and
it's deja vu. Here's a big quarterback who's athletic, more
athletic than Carson Wentz was. He's got, um, you know,
(33:41):
a solid arm. It's not a huge arm, but he's
got a solid arm. But I'm telling I'm telling you what. Now,
his size and athletic talent gives them a chance to
do some things. Whoever picks him up, and I think
he's I think he's a perfect scheme fit for Kyle Shanahan,
like something that you know San Francisco does, because that's
what I see him doing with North da To State.
But let me tell you what's really impressive about him college.
(34:02):
They asked him to set his own protections. There are
seniors in college football that don't get that opportunity they
demanded at North Dakota State. They demand that he looks
at personnel groupings of the opponents, blitz packages, two minute drills,
red zones. By the time that he gets to his
Friday cutups that he has to create, he's just prepared
(34:24):
as any NFL quarterback is for their competition. Now you
throw in the physical traits that you talked about. That's
why he's the most intriguing quarterback, frankly in this entire draft. Okay,
so let's talk Philadelphia. Last year they took Jalen Hurt
second round and I'm hearing stories and now all of
a sudden, Philadelphia is gonna go get another quarterback and
might takeaway his time out time out timeout. So you're
(34:45):
telling me the second draft, your second pick last year,
you had a lot of needs. You know, you don't
think he's a franchise guy. You're not going to give
him like ten starts. What is Jalen Hurts? Is he
a franchise guy? What do you see you like, don't like?
I thought he was a really good backup and a
low end starter. I thought that was his That's a
great I gave him last year. My guess is you're
(35:05):
going to see something similar from the Eagles now when
they take a look at it. But what they have
to decide now because Doug Peterson, the guy who pulled
them out of the game, is no longer there, So
now they have to figure out, do we take one
more year and determine what and who Jalen Hurts as
a quarterback, which realistically you should do as since he
was a second round quarterbacking you liked him enough to
(35:27):
take him behind a quarterback that you already had in place.
And if that's the case, if that's how you believe
in Jalen Hurts, let's let a play out. However, how
often are the Eagles going to be drafting six And
if you're not sure about your quarterback then we've seen
time and time again we saw with the Arizona Cardinals
with Josh Rosen. If you're not sure anymore, you better
(35:47):
get sure. And if they're not sure on Hurts and
they really like three quarterbacks in this draft, and one
of them is at six. You might as well pull
the trigger because if you don't think you can win
with Jalen Hurts, you may not get another chance to
draft six again anytime soon. All Right, the Jets announced
Joe Douglas has said, now we'll take calls on Sam Darnold.
(36:08):
He's officially said it. You know, over the weekend there
was this we're intrigued with Zach Wilson, which is putting
the house up for sale, but you're not telling them
which house the two pick or the Darnold house. Today
he said, we're putting Sam up for sale. Where are
you at today? On him? Because he regressed at the
end of last year. Yeah. So I was a big
fan of Sam Darnolds. Had had a grade of over
(36:28):
a seven point zero, which I thought, you know, I
had a chance to be a pro bowler. I still
love the intangibles. I love the toughness. There's a lot
of things I like about Sam Darnold. I remember watching
a game against the Colts where he made this incredible,
you know, a scapability type of play extending outside the
pocket touchdown throw. But the fact is, I don't know
who Sam Darnold is anymore. He hasn't had great protection,
(36:49):
he hasn't had wide receivers to throw too. That hasn't
been his fault. But if he's been impacted by that,
if he's not going to be the same quarterback he
was coming out, that's a big problem. You may not
get that back out of him. Can he continue to
look down the field and find guys when when there's
a little bit of pressure. I was here in Houston
when David Carr was here, and David Carr left a
(37:11):
much different quarterback than he came in. And that's my
concern right now, Colin. With Sam Darnold, I'm still on
board with Sam Darnold as a guy you don't want
to give up on just yet, at least for another team.
But I can't sit here and tell you with a
lot of confidence that he's the same guy I thought
he was when he came in. Finally, m jj Watt,
I still think it's a good player. I mean, did
(37:34):
Arizona reach do you? I mean what they were fourth
in sacks last year, So it's not like he's going
to change the defense. What do you make of JJ
Watt at this point in his career? I think JJ
is a guy who will bring a level of energy
to the locker room, He'll bring an energy on the field,
and he's going to be somebody that the fans absolutely love.
He's here for everything. He loves being a star, he
(37:56):
loves interacting with fans. What I'm not sure he can
still do is get out after the quarterback and one
on one situations against good tackles. He can't pressure the
pockets still, which is going to be good for Arizona.
But they're paying him money. To me, that looks like
a guy that you expect to get in there and
get to the eight or nine sack range, and I'm
not sure that he's still that guy. But for Arizona,
if they can just pocket, if they can pressure the
(38:18):
pocket with JJ and become a little disruptive with their
with their run defense as well, that might be all
they're looking for. It's just a two year commitment, and
I do think he's great for the culture in Arizona
as well. By the way, one more question of Houston question.
You have great contacts there Labor Day weekend. Where does
Deshaun Watson play as at Houston Houston, there's so much
(38:41):
money that's owed to him, he is he gonna get
back the twenty seven million they gave him to be
you know, their their quarterback. With the next contract. They're
going to take a cap hit when they lose Deshaun
Watson or people going to be able to give them
fair value for a player of that talent. And you know,
and when you look at the money they've already given
(39:02):
him as a signing bonus, is anyone going to kick
back running for that now? I think Nick Cassio is
dead serious about playing hardball with Deshaun Watson. And I
don't think the Texans blink first land zerline. Check him
out NFL dot com. He does as good a job
as anybody out there. And I love seeing you, Buddy,
Good talking to you, and congrats along your success. I
(39:22):
appreciate it, looking forward to it again. Yeah, his dad
was an offensive line coach in the NFL for years,
and he didn't want to do that coaching thing. I've
known a lot of guys in football. They love football.
I don't want to that coaching thing. Now your brother
is doing the high school coaching thing. Yeah, he didn't
want to do the coaching thing when he first retired,
But then my nephews. We're playing flag football when he
first retired, and then they started playing tackle football. And
(39:46):
you know, when you're a Hall of Fame player and
somebody gives not saying this happened, but you know, you
want to coach your coach your kids. You heard a
lot of time guys are like, yeah, I heard one
bad piece of advice given to my son. And then
they're like that no, no, no, though, like I I
will coach you. So he loves it now and he
loves working with the kids. So and he's at Saint
Thomas Aquinas, which is which that's a big football power
(40:06):
in Florida. Yeah. They won state championship last year, in
the national championship the year before that. Yeah, now my
nephew is going to Arizona. I know that jet Fish,
my buddy, that's exciting. Jed's a good dude. It actually
made me feel cool. Every once in a while, I
get like a cool auntie h note because when he
committed to Arizona, I was like, oh, we just had
your coach on. We just had jet Fish on like
two days ago. And he's like, yeah, he told me
(40:28):
he was on your show. Now what position does your
he plays safety, and then his younger brother, Mason plays
tight end. Now, how what years he in? He's gonna
be a senior next year. Okay, so he'll get recruited.
He's getting recruited everywhere. What a feeling that would be
to be recruited. It's fun, it's cool. I got recruited
for track and soccer. Did you really? Yeah? And like
people give you bags of money and stuff. I need
(40:50):
to giving me back though I'm not changing. Everybody's given
me money. No, would you go, you know, on recruiting
trips and they suck up to you? Yeah, yeah, let's
cool up. That so nice. I don't get any of
that at home. You never got recruited anywhere calling? Nope,
they didn't throw any bags of money at you calling
even Fox. I just walked in and it knew who
I was. I just started talking. They put me on
the air, all right, hour three. T O is gonna
(41:12):
be on the show today next
