Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thanks for listening to The Herd podcast. Be sure to

nine to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS one.
Find your local station for The Herd at Fox Sports
Radio dot com, or stream us live every day on
the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox
Sports Radio. Oh, here we go. All this chatter, all

(00:26):
this talk, all those arguments. It is Draft Day in America,
live in Los Angeles. It's The Herd. Wherever you may
be and however you may be listening Fox Sports Radio,
iHeartRadio and FS one. It doesn't matter if you're an
Eagles fan, a Dolphins fan, a Cowboy fan, a Packer fan,

(00:49):
a Bear fan, a Seahawk fan, or a Charger fan.
Everybody gets to open a Christmas present tonight, baby, well,
at least over the weekend. Not everybody has it tonight.
There's a Houston, Texans. I'm not sure if they have
any draft picks for the next day years other than Houston.
This is so good. It's a little bit of hope.
It's optimism. Everybody feels good. So much negativity in the world,

(01:13):
even in sports. This weekend everybody wins, everybody gets presents,
everybody feels good about themselves. Everybody's optimistic. I love people,
you talk draft all the time. It's fun, it's optimism,
it's hope, it's great. Joy Taylor is joining me. I
love tonight. It's the best, and it's life changing for

(01:35):
a bunch of families and young men all over the country. Listen,
you're gonna watch kids tonight though, whole life change. Yeah,
realize their dream. The families who drove them to practices
and paid for the extra protein shakes and went to
all the games and froze and sat in the rain like.
It's a very come together moment for everybody. So I
want to talk about this, So here we go. Oh boy.

(01:57):
First report, a reporter in Boston Patriots working a new
contract with Jimmy g I made calls. I couldn't get
it confirmed. Second report, Patriots talked to the Atlanta Falcons.
They have the number four pick about trading up now.
Atlanta is trying to drive a hard bargain. Apparently they

(02:18):
didn't make a deal. My favorite line in this story, though,
is making a trade up that big would be out
of character for Bill Belichick, who's generally preferred trading down
acquiring additional draft picks, rather than mortgaging the future with
a blockbuster trade up. It is funny when Tom Brady leaves.

(02:39):
New England's now doing a lot of things out of character,
like losing seasons, spending a fortune on free agency, and
now potentially mortgaging the future, proving once again, you can
have the best coach in the world, the best owner
arguably in the world, the best offensive coordinator, the best system,
the best offensive line coach, and your star quarterback leaves

(03:01):
and you're a big nothing burger in you're flailing. I mean,
look at New Orleans last four years, four division titles,
great GM, great coach, excellent owner. Foxbet has the Patriots
and the Saints at nine and a half wins. That's
with an additional game their average. Would you be shocked

(03:21):
in the next four or five years if the Saints
puttered around and made the playoffs once? Would you be
shocked if New England puttered around for the next four
and five years and made the playoffs once? You can't
be So we got two New England narratives right now
this morning in America. One story, they go Garoppolo proven

(03:42):
been there, knows the system feel safe. Or you take
a big swing and you go and trade a bunch
of picks first rounders for a Trey Lance that would
be my pick or Justin Fields. Both fine the way
I look at it, you gotta go for it. This
is a very very very unique year. We have four quarterbacks.

(04:04):
I don't count Mac Jones ever being a first round pick.
We have four quarterbacks in any year could be the
number one pick. Trevor Lawrence will be the number one pick.
He doesn't exist. It's probably Zack Wilson because he has
the most armed talent. They say Justin Fields was considered
a number two picks several months ago, so you know
he could go in some drafts as a number one pick.

(04:27):
And Trey Lance if we don't have a pandemic and
Trey Lance actually plays twelve games, well, Carson wentz from
his school at number two, why couldn't he go number
two or number one? So I don't think Mac Jones
a number one talent, but I think four guys could be.
You're not going to have this again. I mean usually
we have one really good quarterback, maybe two. We don't

(04:50):
have four. To me, new England's got to go for it.
And what New England does two reports today Garoppolo, they're
working on a deal or Trey Lance Justin Fields. What
New England does tells you a lot about how Bill
Belichick almost seventy thinks. If you go Garoppolo, it means
we won't stink it's safe. He knows this system. But

(05:14):
this is a dude that can't get out of September healthy.
I mean, Justin Fields almost got torn in half in
a college bowl game this year. He came back and
played the second half. Garoppolo can't get out of September.
And now we've added a game to the schedule. You
think Garoppolo is gonna last seventeen? Really? In the toughest

(05:35):
division in football, all those teams are good. I mean, god,
now Arizona's got JJ Watt and Chandler Jones, and Seattle
kept Dunlap and you know we all kind of know that.
You know the Rams have Aaron Donald. Then these are
some of the best defensive players up front in the league.
So what is New England? If you go Garoppolo, it's

(05:57):
telling me they just are tie air of being humiliated
by Brady. They're tired of it. They just don't want
to stink. You can make an argument defense Belichick will
be viable, But you don't have a Josh Allen. You
don't have a Justin Herbert, you don't have a Patrick Mahomes,
you don't have Lamar Jackson, or you take the big swing.

(06:18):
And that tells me Belichick's sticking around a while. Belichick
is all in on a rebuild. Belichick's gonna be patient.
Belichick is not retiring soon and going golfing in Jupiter, Florida.
What New England does will tell me a lot about
where they're going. Because if you look around right now
in the NFL, and I like Jimmy Garoppolo, I'm a

(06:40):
much bigger fan of Garoppolo than almost all of you.
He's the fourteenth best quarterback in the league, fifteen maybe twelve.
But with all that injury stuff, nobody in their right
mind thinks you're getting three years seventeen games minimum per
year with Jimmy Garoppolo. It's gonna tell us about Belichick.

(07:02):
How close is he to retirement. Does he want to rebuild,
does he want to nurture? Does he understand he can't win?
Could you get Trey Lance, You're not gonna play for
a year, and it may be a little rocky in
year two. Same with Justin Fields. So I think New
England's gonna tell us a lot about Belichick's future. How
all in how committed to Super Bowls long term? Because Garoppolo,

(07:24):
who I like, feels really safe. But no reasonable person
can think he's gonna last seventeen games minimum, forget playoff
games three straight years. All right, So now with a draft,
once an NFL season starts, I'll be honest, we talk
about eight to twelve teams in college football, we talk
about five. I don't spend a lot of time talking

(07:45):
crappy teams, but the NFL draft is different. Every year.
For about six to eight weeks before the draft, all
sportscasters talk crappy football teams because they always have the
best draft picks. So we're gonna talk Jets, Jags. Cleveland,
Philadelphia is a mess. They may move up. I mean

(08:06):
Cleveland essentially the last twenty years, the only time we
talked about him was the draft. See how badly they'd
screw it up. So I just want to talk about
one really good football team for the next three minutes.
Because I think their draft is fascinating, and that's the
green Bay Packers. So the green Bay Packers are really good.
They have a top two three quarterback in the world,

(08:28):
top ten probably ever. The green Bay Packers played the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers to get to the super Bowl, and
it was close. In fact, when the game was over,
we weren't talking about this team's way better than that team.
We were talking about a coaching decision. So Green Bay
was close to getting to the super Bowl. The coaching

(08:51):
decision is what we talked about. We didn't talk about
he wasn't like the Super Bowl where at Kansas City
was overwhelmed. It was the coaching decision. And Green Bay
has ten picks. So green Bay's the only excellent team
in the NFL tonight with ten picks. Dallas has ten.
They're not excellent. They got ten, got two fours, two fives,

(09:12):
two sixes. I am a believer, and I've said this
for years. I am a big believer in moving down
in the draft. In fact, I think you can make
arguments that if you never had a first round pick,
if you had your quarterback, if you had a good quarterback,
don't worry about first round picks have two seconds, two thirds.
You can pay for your quarterback. But Green Bay is different.

(09:34):
Green Bay's really good. Green Bay's got ten picks and
they've got like two and a half holes. They need
a corner. We saw that against Tampa Bay right before half.
They definitely need another receiver, although they've got a superstar
one and very nice complimentary pieces, but they need to say.

(09:55):
They need a dog, they needed a two, and they
need a corner. And then I like their linebackers, but
if one became available late first round, I'd go for
it and I'd take that. I don't think they necessarily
have to move up in the first round, because I
do think they could solve their linebacker issue where they're
at now. But when the first round's over, tonight's over,

(10:16):
they're gonna have nine picks and two holes. Would anybody
criticize them? Remember last year their first round pick was
a guy that wasn't going to play and ticked off
Aaron Rodgers. I think they owe Aaron Rodgers and themselves
hyper aggressive actions probably after tonight. I do think they

(10:41):
can land a really good linebacker, and they're not desperate
at linebacker. Hell, they're not desperate at wide receiver or corner.
But I think they can stay where they're at tonight
and get a really nice linebacker. But by tomorrow, I'm
giving up some of those picks to get a top
corner and to get a top wide receiver because this

(11:04):
is rare ground. This almost feels like New England for
twenty years. They're good, they're playing conference championships. They don't
have a ton of holes, and they got ten eleven picks.
That's rare. That's a well run organization. We're good. We
don't have holes and a ton of picks. And by
the way, Bill Belichick, more than anybody in the league

(11:26):
since he took the job in New England, has moved
on Draft Day. He's made eighty two draft trades. Not
always not always down, but Bill Belichick is hyperactive. Why
got a good team, got a lot of picks. He
knows what he wants and he goes solves as one
or two holes. I think Green Bay is really interesting,

(11:47):
and I don't think they have to make a big,
hyper aggressive move in round one. But after that they
owe it to Aaron, they owe it to themselves. You
need a corner and union a receiver. Trade all your
picks to get them. This team is two ten picks.
There's not ten guys that can make this roster. Well,
they lost their center to their Chargers. They have a

(12:08):
guard they drafted a couple of years ago developed, he'll
move over their fine, David Bactieri comes back left tackle.
They could maybe take, you know, an offensive linement. It's
not a need. It's a top five offensive line. Even
losing their center to the Chargers, it's still a top
five offensive line. So this is Patriots territory. Good, no holes,

(12:29):
a lot of picks, and New England moved up to
get people. And I think, I think Green we all
talk about crap leading up to the draft. I'm fascinated
Monday what Green Bay looks like because I don't think
they're that far away. Remember the Tampa Bay Buccaneer game.
It was not a route. It was one blown coverage
before half and a tenuous coaching decision. Otherwise they're in

(12:53):
the super Bowl. Otherwise they're in and they're facing the
Kansas City team missing their left tackle. All right, so
we've got all right, CHEFTI schefter's got something on Jimmy Garoppolo.
I will address that next be sure. To catch live
editions of The Herd weekdays and noon Easter ninety Empacific

(13:15):
on Fox Sports Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app
Jay Glazer. In about ten minutes so, Adam Schefter came
out said multiple teams are expected to contact the Niners
today inquiring about Jimmy Garoppolo. As of this morning, the
chances of him being traded remote. Let's keep our eye

(13:35):
on it. So I'm gonna double down on something I
said yesterday. Just keep Garoppolo play until he gets hurt.
Even if you love Mac Jones, would you really like
him Week one against the Seahawks, really, Week one against
Aaron Donald, Week one against Kyler Murray and that pass
Russian Arizona. He gave up nothing for Jimmy Garoppolo. Think

(13:57):
about this, let's put it in context. Gave up a
second round pick for Jimmy Garoppolo. That's what New England
gave up for Mohammed Sanu and Miami gave up for
Josh Rosen. Sometimes you whiff totally, but San Francisco didn't
even whiff. They were two and fourteen the year before

(14:18):
they got Garoppolo. Three years later, they're winning their division
and going to the Super Bowl. Jimmy Garoppolo has completely
outperformed his trade compensation. You've already gotten so much more
out of him than anybody gets for a second round pick.
Do you have to win another trade? Keep him around

(14:40):
until he gets hurt, Play him until he gets hurt,
which you know is week three of the preseason. Maybe,
But nonetheless, you really feel good if you love Mac Jones,
he's ready to play now? Really? Is he ready to
beat Seattle now? In Seattle? No? Is he ready to
beat the Rams now in Matt Stafford and Sean McMath No,
If you like Mac Jones, you'd even acknowledge he's probably

(15:02):
better in a year than now. Like I always feel
this with grills. I've owned like three grills in my life.
I grill a lot. I keep in ten years. You
pay like a thousand bucks. I mean you can pay
four hundred. I pay about it. I don't go to
the top end, I don't go bottom. I go somewhere
in the middle. Nine hundred bucks for a grill used
to be six hundred. Now it's about nine and fifty
for a grill. I use it for ten years. I

(15:24):
get so much enjoyment out of a grill. It mean,
it's when I think of grills, I think of family
and kids and burgers and hot dogs and pork chops.
So when my grill after ten years is done, I
don't try to resell it. I already won. I'm gonna
resell it to a neighbor for forty bucks. I just
give it to a neighbor if he wants it. I

(15:44):
give it to a kid, one of the kids in
a family. College kid. Just take the thing, like New
England or San Francisco. They won the deal. Second round pick.
That's what Miami got for Josh Rosen, a second round pick.
He takes you the Super Bowl. Just keep him around,
keep him around and play him till he runs out
of cast or gets hurt. But it's this idea. You

(16:07):
gotta move him. Even if you loved Mac Jones, he
ain't ready to go to Seattle or go against Matt
Stafford and Kyler Murray and win. And none of these,
none of these guys. Trevor Lawrence isn't none of these
guys are. You won the trade. You don't have to
win it again. Keep him around until the car runs

(16:27):
out of gas, the Garoppolo van runs out of vast
gas and then he's either you know, if he gets
hurt again. By the way, he's got no value. Keep
him as a backup. He'd be one of the top
three backups in the league. Joy with the news. No, no,
this is the herd line news. Well, even though the
draft seems to start with Atlanta at four, the forty

(16:50):
nine ers, they're kind of the talk of the drafts
right now. They've obviously made a big move up to
jump to number three, but the initial talk was mac
Jones and now they're impressed with Tray Lance. So even
up until this past weekend, they reportedly did not know
who they were going to take, so they have been
on the fence for quite a while. Now, you know,

(17:11):
I believe they're taking mac Jones, and they're covering their
butt just saying we like all these other guys. So
if Trey Lance goes to the Patriots and crushes they
can say years later, hey, we loved him, we thought
he was great, but it was we needed a guy
to you know, play. I don't know how to like
if that helps them or hurts them to say that
they were on the fence, Like if Trey Lance ends
up being great, and they were like, well, you weren't

(17:33):
sure and you went with Mac and he doesn't end
up being great. Does it help to just say you
were locked in on Mac? I don't know. Well, let
me ask you this, what would you get for Garoppolo
on the market with his injury history? I don't know,
but Teddy Bridgewater only got a six. So if San
France I don't know the answer to this, let's say
you could get a four for Garoppolo. I'm totally guessing

(17:53):
because if his injury history, you're not getting a first,
and I don't know if you get a second. What
is the value? The only value to trade Garoppolo, as
far as I can tell, is it allows you to say, well,
we traded Garoppolo, we love to pick, we had to
get the quarterback ready to play. Now. I think that

(18:14):
if you're starting new if you want to give your
quarterback that you want to make him the guy, then
I think there's value of moving off of Jimmy Garoppolo.
I think there are two different ways of thinking about
rookie quarterbacks. I happen to be in the camp of
get out there, go make your mistakes, go learn how
to play the game. Throw them to the wolves and

(18:35):
see what you got. That's my mentality on rookie quarterbacks.
I know a lot of people feel like you gotta
go the Alex Smith Patrick Mahomes route, kind of ease
them in and teach them how to be pros, and
you know, give them that extra time to develop into
the NFL body, in the NFL training and the NFL schedule.
I'm in the camp of the first But I also
think that the value of just putting the burden of

(18:58):
the franchise on your rookie quarter back is also you
get to see what you have. You have a full evaluation,
like that's what I didn't like what they did with Tua,
and in comparison, Josh Allen got those three years to
develop into what he is now. So yes, you're probably
gonna struggle initially, but I would say keeping Jimmy Garoppolo
is that sort of safety net where you know, Okay,

(19:19):
you took this rookie quarterback. He's not quite ready, but
I just think it's better to just let him have
the franchise. Jimmy's there, it's still gonna feel like it's
Jimmy's team, and Jimmy has a lot of supporters in
the locker room. Yeah, but I guess what if Again,
Let's remember this is the best division in football and
arguably the best coached division in football, right, boy, you

(19:42):
could be you could look up Week seven, be two
and five with Mac Jones and you've lost the locker room.
But you can't. You know that Jimmy's not the future,
Like even if even if I'm talking about for this year,
Like everyone knows Jimmy is unreliable physically, so everyone in
the locker room knows that too. So if you're going

(20:03):
back and forth between a rookie quarterback and Jimmy g
it starts to I think it just causes more division.
Like at least with a rookie quarterback, they know, okay,
he's got to develop, Like we got it, we have
some time with him. You're not going to expect him
to go out this year, win Rookie of the Year
and take you to a super Bowl. Like that's not
the expectations when you get a rookie quarterback. He's expected
to struggle a little bit. Yeah, So I don't know,

(20:24):
It's just I think it depends on how they're looking
at the next three years for the franchise. So the
Broncos sent a six round pick to the Panthers in
exchange for Teddy Bridgewater yesterday. With him Andrew Locke on
the roster, they don't have a glaring heat at quarterback anymore.
But the trade reportedly does not remove Denver from the
quarterback market tonight. I think we all know that means well,

(20:45):
we might so if you want to trade up, you
might want to do that. So taking a rookie rookie
quarterback with the ninth is still a possibility. But they
are probably just chart this well, dangling it as a
as a trade. Denver has two quarterbacks, but I do
believe they could take another one simply because of this.

(21:05):
Bridgewater's a band aid and they've they've lost confidence in
Locke right and by the way, in a division with
Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert, you can't have a BB gun. No.
I think if Trey answer Dustin Fields were to fall
to nine, I think they would take. But Caroline is
different is that there's a lot of people in that
building that see darneld is a big, dynamic, playmaking quarterback.
I don't see the value of threatening him with a

(21:27):
draft pick like Carolina. To me, this feels like a decoy.
Whereas with Denver, even though they have two quarterbacks, you
in the division with Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert and
by the way and Derek Carr Bridgewater and Drew Locke
do not feel like the future and you're really not
paying a lot of money for any of them, so
you could you could make it work. So Trevor Lawrence

(21:49):
caused some controversy and he said he didn't play football
with a chip on his shoulder. It's got everybody that
loves Clichsel rolled up. But he's defending his opinion once again,
adding that he doesn't care about what other people think.
He did an interview with Time and he said, it's
just kind of the way things are now. It's just
what can people find to get mad about, to criticize.

(22:09):
If people still want to have an opinion on the
way I think, in the way I live, I don't
really care. No matter what you say, there's always going
to be something. Yeah, that's a very healthy way to
look at it. There's a lot of people that are
on the internet just a troll. That's like thirty percent
of the Internet. It's a very strange lifestyle and I'll
never understand it, but I will say and I agree
with him, I don't think. I think when it comes

(22:30):
to sports, we have this idea and it's a very
like old school mentality that you have to like live
and breathe and die with whatever your sport is. And
the reality is very few people on Earth live their
life that way, no matter what their profession is. Memory
years ago, Lebron got heat for something that was brutally honest,
and he got heat for it. Lebron said, like five

(22:52):
or six years ago, he came out and he said, listen,
for all you people criticizing me, I got a better life.
What you do with your life is your time. But yeah, one,
and he got heat. And Trevor Lawrence is saying the
same thing. I'm good. It's on you. And people push
back on Lebron and there's no reason too. I totally
supported it. It's okay to admit I'm successful, I got

(23:14):
a great life. If you're a troll, you're a loser,
because we all know that's true. So for Trevor Lawrence,
he's largely doing a Lebron I'm good here if you
if you wake up angry on Twitter. That is not
my problem. That's what Lebron said and got heat for it.
So I'm going to support successful people who acknowledge. Yeah,
I'm not going to be falsely humble. I'm really good here. No,

(23:36):
some people wake up angry. I'm not one of them.
Go play amongst yourself. I'll put Twitter filters on. Yeah,
I agree with his mentality. I agree that it's healthier
to not go through life with a burning rage of anger.
Like that's why you and I spent a lot of
time in therapy. But right, like that's for us to
deal with and not projected onto other people. If you,

(23:56):
if you can go through life working and succeed eating
without that kind of anxiety, that's a great thing. I
will say. In contrast, though, you're now in the NFL
and you're the starting quarterback and you're the number one
I will pick. So everything you say is going to
be picked apart. Whether it's good or bad or indifferent,
it doesn't matter. Like that's the world to his point
that we live in, So people are always going to
find a way to criticize what you say, which is

(24:18):
why quarterback speak is so valuable. Yes, that's right, Joy
with the news. Well that's the news, and thanks for
stopping by the herd Line New Kevin Burkhardt, Jay Glazer,
LaVar Arrington, Bucky Brooks to night on Fox Sports Radio
Draft Night Live. Jay Glazer Fox Sports Insider is now
going to join us live as it's one of my
favorite nights of the year. I like it. It's hope,

(24:40):
it's optimism. You know, there's so much negativity in the world.
The draft to me always feels so hopeful, so optimistic,
you change lives. I love Draft Night. So wait, by
the way, why did you just introduce us? Like someone
round your dog over? You're like Jay Glazer Burkhart, can
we have a little lot? I mean, man, it's Draft Day,

(25:01):
simon Draft Night Live on Fox Sports Radio. Um, so
the number. So I have a theory on this. By
the way, by the way, here look at my notes.
This is like cramming and like college and height. I mean,
here's my notes. Here's my notes or Joel Klatt like, man,
it's like, um, the draft is great when you have
a d D because you got so much stuff to do.

(25:22):
But the drafts bad when you have a d D
because you don't remember have to crap you right down.
Do we know whether or not you know who the
Niners are picking? Do you believe they know who they're
picking up? Three? You do? So? Here? So here what
happened on Friday? John Lynch, Carl shan had they got
their guy, but they said, let's let's go home and
sleep on it. Let's go make sure, and let's see

(25:44):
on Monday if we're just as convicted they came in Monday,
We're like, we're convicted. That's our guy. So yeah, they've
known who their guy's gonna be since last Friday, probably
before that also. But you know what happens, This is
paralysis by over analysis. Like I had look um probably
at this whole time, patri Chr. Tan has been the

(26:04):
one of the cleanest, man most reliable guys you can
have in this draft. Right, and then the guy who's
probably shocked the most in the last week is J. C. Horne,
who's the corner from South Carolina. But what's happening? You
want to talk about paralysis to fight over analysis? It
was clear cut to Tan's the number one corner for
all these weeks, and now all of a sudden, guys
start going, man, he's so clean, he's so perfect. Maybe

(26:26):
he's just he's hit his ceiling, where a guy like
jac Horne has more room to grow. I mean, think
of how backwards that is. Somebody can be too perfect
and too clean right for for only one of the
fifty two weeks of the year. Yeah, no, it's it's real.
I remember Andrew Luck before he got drafted. There was
all the you know, his arms not that great, and
I'm like, it doesn't have to be Elway, It's good enough.

(26:48):
He's gonna be fine. So let's talk about about Garoppolo.
And I've said this, listen, man. They gave a second
round pick for him, Jay, he is, He's been more
than worth the compensation. Couldn't I just make an argument,
whatever quarterback you take, just keep Jimmy around, maybe to
the trading deadline. Even if you love Mac Jones, Jay

(27:10):
opens up against Seattle and Pete Carroll, he's gonna be
a little overwhelmed. Couldn't chargue you keep Garoppolo around at
least until the trading deadline instead of rushing to trade him.
When I talked to him yesterday, they were pretty sure
that Jimmy still be on the team, like I was. Okay,
but also but it's interesting what happens because you hear

(27:31):
New England so much New England, New England with Jimmy Garoppolo,
and when do we ever really know what New England's
gonna do. So it's almost like New England's trying to
manufacture it, yeah, to put pressure on the forty nine
ers to trade him over to the Patriots. It's just again,
there's this is the time of year. It's no stop,

(27:54):
NonStop stop subterfuge. You know, Jay listen, Um, I like
both Trey Lance and Fields. I think they're terrific kids.
I think they're I think they're big, fast, big arm.
I like them both. I don't feel like nitpicking them.
If if I ask you, Jay, and you can you
don't have to tell me the people. But if I said,
if you ask ten gms, because I hear various stories,

(28:17):
is Trey Lance or Justin Fields in this moment as
we pick them all apart, which one has more GMS
that like him today? Probably Trey Lance, okay, I would think,
But I agree with you, Um, I love both those guys,
probably over mac um Man. I really like both those guys.

(28:37):
I just think the upside what they could do and um,
you know you can't certainly can't question Ohio State's toughness.
Oh my god. Right, And you know he's the type
of guy he's so athletic that he could use his
legs to topress the extend places. But he used them
to extend plays, to keep you know, to keep getting
after in the passing game, which a lot of these
quarterbacks don't do these days. One time, once they see it,

(28:59):
it opened and they tuck it and they go right.
So he's a he's a legit dual threat. The one
thing about Trey Lance, I mean he is you know,
I've asked couple of guys. The guys never run a
two minute drill. So I said, how do you how
do you find out how he is an adversity because
he's never run a two minute drill? And they said, well,
you got to ask him other things, ask him about life,
things like that, and they just love. They fell in
love with the kids, makeup, and then what his upside is? Also,

(29:22):
I think both these guys are many. They're really if
you get them around the right people, they could do
a lot of damage. That's what I feel. I tell
me where they land on Monday or by tomorrow and
then I'll feel I can tell you how they'll do.
But I think they're both unbelievable candidates. Now, it is interesting.
There were stories Jay and I was, I am a
believer that Atlanta doesn't need a quarterback. I kind of

(29:44):
feel like Matt Ryan right now is the one thing
I do trust, and I do think with Arthur Smith.
I think he's gonna this is gonna work. It's gonna
be nice. I like their old line. I like the receivers,
so I get the Kyle Pitts thing. But there have
been stories that the GM wants a quarterback and the
coach he wants y Pits. So you tell me the truth.
What are you hearing? They've been on the same page. Here,
they've been on the same page. But I called I

(30:08):
called one him the other day and I said, I
called some of the falcons. I said, if you don't
take Kyle Pitts, I'm gonna low leg kick you. I mean,
this guy is so ridiculous. There's two. So here's the
one thing that people agree on in the draft. There's
two generational talents in his drafts. Two. One is Trevor
Lawrence and one is that guy Kyle Pitts. And you know,
I talked to who's the coach yesterday? I talked to

(30:30):
the head coach yesterday and I said, tell me about
you know, what's your thought on Kyle Pitts. And he said,
if he came out as a receiver, he might be
the number one receiver in this draft, the top X
in this draft. He's obviously the top tight end. But
he said, he's not a tight end and he's not
a receiver. He said, what do you mean? He said,
he's a weapon. He's just different. He's a mismatched problem.
I asked one head coach who's got a great corner

(30:52):
on his team? I said, could you put that guy
on on one on one? And he said I could,
but I wouldn't feel good about it. He has he
presents that kind of front almost like Calvin Johnson, Yeah,
playing tight end, Yeah right, Like yeah, he's like Calvin
playing It's just such a mismatch and there's so many
things you could do with him. I think Atlanta, man,
they can't pass upon him. Yeah, No, I do think.

(31:14):
And that's my feeling is I think oh line for
Atlanta is actually pretty good. I think their receivers are interesting.
Matt's gonna get upgraded with an offensive coach Kyle Pitts. Yeah,
that is a that is a great, great offense. Now
a team that's you can get a quarterback in the
second round here? Also, Yeah, now Jay a team that
I can't quite get my arms around. I love Brian Flores.

(31:35):
They won ten games last year with two and Ryan Fitzpatrick.
I love where they're going defense, special teams. But they
have upgraded their wide receiving cores in free agency. Okay,
and they at number six. If Cincinnati takes Jamar Chase,
and I'm sure Joe Burrow is lobbying hard for that,
does Miami keep rebuilding the old line receiver? Do you

(31:58):
have a feeling on my amy at all? Yeah? I
think they go whichever one Cincinnati doesn't take. Okay, Cincinnati
has Sewell and even Slater's kind in the mix, but
really Sewel and Chase, and whichever one they don't go,
then they're sitting right there in Miami. But listen, I
love the receivers in this draft. I love both Alabama guys. Obviously, Chase.

(32:19):
I'm a huge DeVonta Smith got huge, I mean, just um,
how his teammates react to him. He's one of those guys.
He's coming to center in the NFL. And look for
all the college kids out there, whatever you did in college, okay,
it's not good enough for this level. You gotta do more.
You gotta figure out you have to evolve. And a
lot of college guys coming to come into the league like,

(32:41):
I'm good, what I did in college gonna work here.
It's just not how it is. You got to figure
out ways to elevate. And that's why we hear about
people's work ethic on this level and how they they elevate.
The guy like DeVonta Smith, he'll work that hard on
this next level. So I love him. Um So, I
think Miami's sitting good where they have both those receivers, they'll,
you know, one of the two tackles to choose from.

(33:03):
But those are the positions that they got to go for. Finally,
is there a team? And I don't know your confidence level.
I kind of feel like New England's going to move up,
but I don't have the sourcing you do. Is there
a team do you think? And by the way, it
could be Washington. I'm not I'm not saying top ten SATs,
the Saints who're trying to get into top That's what
I heard last night, by the way, I heard that. Yep,

(33:25):
that's what I heard last night. So the Saints of
the team you think is going to move up, I
don't know, because here's the thing. I don't man, there's
such a drop off after a certain number. You know,
there's like when you look at them, there's three receivers
who are in that, you know, Bam. After that, there's
a little drop off. There's two corners after that, bam,
there's a drop off. There's only a couple probably three

(33:46):
off oftive linemen after that, there's a drop off. So
I don't know, you know how much a team would
want to drop all the way down? If I'm like,
maybe a team like Miami, who we've seen do this already,
but man, they you know, we already know the trade
they made for to get there. I don't know how
many we're gonna want to trade all the way down.

(34:06):
The one thing I will say is this is the
draft that you want to pick in the second and
third round four right, this is just a different draft. Man.
It's it's um. You know, you have guys you didn't
have a combine, you didn't have a season for a
lot of guys last year to look out in the
league where they get so streaked out when they don't
have enough information. There certainly haven't been as much information

(34:26):
this year at last year because and what I say
here is that, look, there's guys who played two years ago,
let's say, two hundred and forty pounds. Now they're two seventy,
two seventy five. You don't know how their bodies work. Yeah,
at two seventy five, right, So, and I get why
a lot of these kids opted out. I totally get
that and completely understand. But it's it's hard to say, Okay,
well we really love this kid at two forties, two

(34:48):
seventy five, he looks like he's gonna be two ninety
and you only really have a pro day to go
off of. So it's just a different draft. By the way,
I not only heard New Orleans wants to move up.
I heard they want to move up to take a corner,
is what I was told. That's what I'm looking for defensive,
all right, Jay Glazer, good stuff, Buddy Tonight, Draft Night Live,
Fox Sports Radio eight Eastern, Jay Bucky Brooks, Vary, Kevin Burkhart,

(35:12):
big energy, good stuff. That is good stuff. By the way,
it's interesting. I heard, uh yesterday a scout I trust
implicitly said, um, everybody likes pinay Seul, but he is
not as generational as Trevor Lawrence or Kyle Pitts. He

(35:33):
is very good. But to Jay's point, like they like
panay Seul, but he said, slow down on the We're
not sure. There's a big gap between him and Slater
like and I've made that mistake. I think he looks
like an all time left tackle. But I was told
last night by a scout who's been great, he said,
he's not Jonathan Ogden. Don't go there. He's not Anthony

(35:54):
Muno's He's not Jonathan Ogden. He's really good, but there's
a difference Trevor and Kyle Pitts. That's stuff doesn't come
along once a decade. That stuff is all time stuff,
all right, Another rumor. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Herd weekdayson noon Easter ninety Empacific. Hey, I'm
John Middlecopp and I host the Three and Out Podcast.
Do you like football? Do you like the NFL? Do

(36:16):
you like the NFL draft quarterbacks coaches. Well, I talk
about it all on the show. I used to work
for Andy Reid as a scout. Now I give you
my unfiltered and raw opinions on everything that goes on
the NFL. And you know we're talking college football because
of how important the draft is year round. Listen to
the three and Out podcast with me John Middlecop on
the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcast or wherever you get your podcasts.

(36:40):
A story today, the Panthers have officially picked up the
fifth year option on DJ Moore. He's a very underrated
wide receiver DJ Moore, so he's sticking around a couple
of years for Sam Darnold to throw to. The story
continues Adam Schefter, but have not done so yet on
Sam Darnold, leaving open possibility of drafting a quarterback tonight.

(37:02):
Now there's two teams, Denver and Carolina where there's a
lot of talk getting a quarterback. Denver. I buy Bridgewater
and Drew Locke in a division with Justin Herbert, Derek Carr,
and Patrick Mahomes ain't good enough, bro ain't good enough.
Sam Darnald in a division where the Saints don't know
whose quarterback. Matt Ryan's got fifty fifty support in the room,

(37:25):
and Brady's old is good enough. So I think a
lot of this joy talked about it earlier. I think
Carolina feels like they're trying to create buzz because they've
only got to think like seven picks. I think they'd
like more and they have some needs. But I don't
like the idea of drafting a quarterback. Why. I think
direction matters. I think you're selling stuff to your locker room.
I really do believe this. Dave Juanstadtla says, like you

(37:47):
can lose games, you can't lose locker rooms. And I
think you can sell after Teddy Bridgewater sort of a
non athletic guy. You can sell Darnald. You're gonna bring
Donald in. He's six fo runs well, big arm. Players
are going to look around and go, that's an alpha.
Like Sam's an easy got to sell. Players in New
York loved him. Hell, after all of his losses, the

(38:09):
coach and the GM liked him. They everybody likes Sam.
When you get him in the room, you can sell
him in the locker room. So year one, Matt rule
draft defense. We got to solve the defense they did
it year two. Acquire a more athletic, playmaking quarterback. That's
the direction of the NFL and upgrade or old line.
That feels like the move. Why throw a wrench in

(38:30):
the Other thing is I'm wantly going to think about
this for a second. And I know Sam pretty well,
what kind of human he is, what kind of duty
is You don't have to pick up the fifth year
option on Sam Darnold. You don't, You don't. That's a myth.
You bring him in, you're not paying him anything this year.
You just let him play. If he's bad, boom, I

(38:51):
don't think he will be. And if he's good, he'll
go to the free agent market. Well, the truth is
Sam Darnald has such a horrific think New York experience,
and frankly he left USC. Many thought he would stay
because he didn't love the coaching there. So if he
goes to Carolina with Matt Rule and Joe Brady and

(39:13):
he has weapons and Christian McCaffrey and they solve the
old line, I think Sam Darnold would give them a
little bit of a discount in Carolina and stay. I
don't think he'd explore the market because he had the Jets.
He knows the dreck of the NFL what it can be.
If he succeeds in Carolina. I don't think Sam would

(39:33):
go get me out of here. I think he'd be like, Okay, finally,
young smart coaches. We got a bunch of picks, a
great aggressive owner. I think he would stay and if
he's no good, then you'd get rid of him. But
Baker Mayfield's different, like they're Baker Mayfields in a different situation.
With them, they have a super Bowl capable roster. Carolina doesn't.

(39:55):
So to me. I think they could trade the picks,
move down, get Sam more support, but they're don't pick
up Sam's option. You don't have to. I think he'd
stay if you succeed, and if he does it, you
move on. So okay, I'm gonna do my final mock draft.
This is it. This is the last one. This is it.
There's no limitation, there's no there's no limitation on this stuff.

(40:16):
My final mock draft. This is it. Next
