Football on TV right like, I don't know pointing upstairs,
(00:56):
don't know who's responsible, Roger Goodell, George Hallis, I don't know,
but thank you. Football back on TV. So we had
a chance to see Kyler Murray play last night for
the Arizona Cardinals, and as it may be with all
young players, we're gonna overreact to how good he was,
(01:19):
how good he looked, and he was six or seven
forty four yards for a team that had was arguably
the most boring team in the National Football League. They
were exciting to watch. I was thrilled, I was fascinated.
I was like, man, I cannot wait. It's important to
point out that while he was tremendous, he was in
(01:41):
fact moving in times and running for his life. And
that's against the Chargers without Joey Bosa and without Melvin Ingram,
two dynamic pass rushers that didn't play for the Chargers.
But let's not make overwhelming thoughts and predictions on what
he is or will be and what his upside is.
And you know, can he be a five foot nine
and a half Pat Mahomes. That's really what we're kind
(02:03):
of trying to pick. Can he be a five nine
and a half Bat Mahomes? Is that possible? Is that possible?
I don't know. I don't know. Yes, I know he
measured at five ten or whatever. But the truth is
most people think that there was something funny going on
with those measurements. But what I do know is well
(02:25):
what I what I do? I know two things from
watching Arizona play last night. First, David Johnson in fantasy football,
He's gonna get one hundred and ten catches, right, isn't he?
David Johnson is the perfect back and in the perfect situation,
which brings me to Kyler Murray. What is life about?
(02:46):
What is your job? About your relationship with your significant other,
about your friends? About? So much of it is about
your fit. It's it's it's not good people bad people. Right,
Some people don't work in a relationship, not because one
person's good and one person's bad, but because they don't fit.
(03:10):
Like you can be opposites and attract. Can you fit together?
You can be the exact same can you fit together?
And sometimes being the exact same thing can lead to
disasters because you're both so stubborn, or you're both so shy,
or sometimes it can be perfect, And the same can
be true for opposites. Right. Opposites can in fact attract
(03:34):
because that person brings you balance, But do they bring
you joy? Do they fit what you need in that
time in your life? The same is true at your job.
You know, it's not even sometimes about the job. It's
about the job and when it fits in your life. Man,
that was a great job, but it was in New
York and it was at a time my dad was
(03:54):
sick and I wanted to be in LA and it
just didn't fit me at that time, or I had
a relationship that was a great relationship, but I had
just gotten out of a long term relationship and it didn't.
In fact work. Football teams are much the same. Basketball
teams are the same. To play for the Lakers back
(04:18):
when they had Shack and Kobe and ran the triangle,
it didn't matter how good a point guard you were.
If you had to have the ball in your hands
and you had to run screen and roll of your
John Stockton, that wasn't going to work. Do you know why,
Because that's not how they played. You weren't a good fit.
I mean, think about it, Pat Mahomes, had he gone
(04:40):
to a different team, you know, the Bears for example,
like Pat Mahomes, but they felt like Mitch Trubisky because
Trubisky was a little bit more what they thought was
buttoned up, because he had sat before in college. They
felt like he was a better fit for them. Now,
Pat Mahomes a better quarterback. It was a bad decision.
But with Pat Mahome be the same quarterback. Had he
(05:01):
not gone to Kansas City and learned from Alex Smith
and played for Andy Reid, who's great with quarterbacks. Oh yeah,
By the way, he had Tyreek Hill, a guy who
has the strongest arm in the NFL, has the one
wide receiver that no one can overthrow. And then you
have Travis Kelsey who's always open, and Sammy Watkins, who,
(05:22):
you know, whatever you think about Sammy Watkins, he has
tremendous hands. If he's your third or fourth best pass receiver,
that's not bad. So I watched Kyler Murray last night
and my takeaway was this, I don't know if it's
gonna work right, no idea. He's tiny. He is really
(05:44):
really small. And it's not just that he's small, it's
and the ability to see over the middle of the defense.
Because all of those throws were outs. All those those
were out outside the pocket or you know, short little outs.
He wasn't staring down to defense, standing up tall and
firing that ball down the middle of the field. That's
the big challenge when you're small. I don't know if
(06:06):
he'll be able to take contact. He likes to move.
He's two hundred and five pounds. He gets touched, he's
going down. Don't know if they can touch him, and
should be pointed out he's closer to the ground than
other guys, so maybe he doesn't hurt him as much
as other guys. But here's what I do know. His
head coach is a former quarterback who's had a relationship
(06:29):
with Kyler since he was in high school. That does,
in fact matter. Additionally, the head coach ran the same
offense when he was in college and understands the transition
of going to the pros because he's been a pro himself,
and he understands this offense because he's coached in college.
He's coached it, he's coached it at different schools, and
(06:51):
he has the perfect quarterback who's run the offense previously.
The offense is perfect because it's designed for a team.
You can have a terrible offensive line as long as
you get rid of it quickly, and that's what this
offense is designed for. You can throw it instead of
running it. And they actually have really good wide receivers.
(07:14):
You got Christian Kirk on one side. You got Larry Fitzgerald,
you got David Johnson. You have a bunch. You have
a bunch of pass catching threats. You're playing indoors, which
makes your team faster, which makes ball handling easier because
there's no inclement weather for your quarterback who has a
smaller person's smaller hands, more likely to fumble. Every box
(07:38):
that is possibly checked in terms of the likelihood of
something succeeding right has checked for Kyler Murray. It doesn't
mean that it will work, but you have a general
manager who is all in. Like Look, he just drafted
a quarterback the year before and had to bail on him.
If this doesn't work, se time is out out Cliff Kingsbury.
(07:58):
This has to work for him. He just I fired
his Alma Honor. Now he's in the pros. It was
a surprise higher. If this doesn't work, he's gone. He
can gonna a head coach again. He knows it. They
are completely invested in the player, and the player comes
from a similar system, so there's not a lot of
verbiage change. It's only stepping up in level of competition,
(08:19):
but you also have a higher level of support. I'm
not going to sit here and hot take it and
tell you if I think Kyler Murray makes it or
doesn't make it, He's going to get every possible opportunity
have the complete and undivided support of his general manager
and of his head coach. And his head coach of course,
(08:40):
has played the position and run the offense, and has
played in the pros and knows Kyler to a t
because he coached against him and he recruited him since
he was just a mighty man in high school. They're
so all in that they did. They didn't even mess around.
(09:02):
They got ar Rosen, they named the starter day one.
They even treated him like a starter, treated him like
a returning star last night. Most guys who are just
getting their feet wet, they would have given them more
reps playing the whole first quarter or playing the whole
first half trying to figure out, Hey, this is NFL football,
it's faster. Let's get you some more reps against the
ones and the twos and maybe the threes of the
(09:22):
other team. They didn't do that. They didn't treat him
like he's a guy who's going to be a star.
They treat him like a guy who is a star.
Kyler Murray may make it, may not make it, but
he's found the perfect fit, which in your job, in
your relationship, in your life is really all you can
(09:45):
hope for, because when you fit together, the bad times
don't last as long and the good times seem to
be more prominent. It's just it's incredibly important to find
people that are not only bought in, but have lived
your experience, understand who you are, what you bring to
your experience, and have the complete and right support. Look
(10:08):
if he goes to a team that's built with a
huge offensive line that wants to run the football and
keep him in the pocket, I'm not sure this thing works.
But he goes to a team that's so desperate to
be exciting, so desperate to be watchable, so desperate to
find some different way of attacking the problem of not
(10:29):
just being good in the NFL, but being relevant in
the NFL, that they're willing to completely give themselves to
the air raid offense. I'm more, could you ask for
what I think? I think it looked pretty good. Does
that mean he'll be great week ten? Does that mean
they're going to win the division? I think not. They
can score some points, sure, seems like it. Can they
(10:51):
stop anybody? No idea? Can it keep him up right?
We'll see how good is he long term. I'm not
going to hot take it after watching him throw what
was it, seven passes last night for forty four yards.
But if it's ever gonna work for a five ten
quarterback who runs around, has a big arm, and gets
a chance to play in the NFL. This is gonna
(11:11):
be it. In life, it is important to know who
you are and stay true to you who you are.
That's why what I saw from the Cleveland Browns makes
me think they know who they are. That's next time,
Doug Gottlieb, This is the Herd. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Herd weekdays at noon Easter nine
am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio FS one and the
(11:33):
iHeart Radio app. What Up, Doug Gottlieb in for Colin
This is the Herd On a Friday card. Friday in
the Herd prep room, we not only had the bagels
that Colin claims to purchase. He claims to purchase the bagels.
Is that true? Does anybody know if that's true? I
(11:54):
can't confirm that he takes the bill. I would say
he gets them purchased for us, So let's it's probably
in the middle. We don't pay for him. He does
put that bill, all right? That goes on Colin Cowherd's
a card. That's again, this is what's going There's multiple
in my ear, there's some thumb up, some thumbed out,
I'm more skeptical than the people in your ear. I
(12:15):
am as well. I am as well. But there was
also some who brought the danishes today. I mean we
just carved it up. It was there some playing pasta
to somebody running a marathon from back in like nineteen
eighty nine were doing red bulls too, Red bulls of
soup carved day with the herd um. I watched the
(12:35):
Browns last night, and I watched the Browns go no huddle,
and I felt like it was a bit much, right,
Like do you really want to go no huddle? You're
not playing against all the ones from the other team,
You're playing against the Redskins, who all right best in
a transition year. And I know the Redskins were in
(12:55):
first place in the NFC East for a good portion
of time before they had both their their top two
quarterbax break their legs last year. But like, let's be honest,
when we start talking about the great teams in the NFC,
no one starts with the Redskins. You're taking on the
Redskins last night, you start running no huddle and then
you're celebrating kind of like the women's national team was
celebrating against who Indonesia, right against Thailand. And don't get
(13:21):
me wrong, Baker was great. And I'm a lot more
in on Baker than Colin is in on Baker. But
it was interesting that they went no huddle, that they
celebrated with such bravado, and they did so frankly, without OBJ,
without Jarvis Landry. All right, let's just go and just
kind of overwhelm the Redskins instead of you would think
(13:42):
kind of working on some things, or maybe they were
working on some things. And then I saw Baker Mayfield
doing the snapshot. They were doing the like walking on
the catwalk celebrating the touchdown pass, and I started to realize,
this is who the Browns are. They know who they are?
Is Baker Mayfield over the top? Yeah, Yeah, he grabbed
(14:06):
his junk in college. Sure he planted the flag at
at Ohio State Stadium in college. But he's on brand.
But before the NFL Draft, remember he did the picture
of the Brett Farve picture right where he was in
like a dorm room with an OU shirt on and
a hat and Jorg's and on the phone. This he
(14:29):
is a look at me guy. He's like a pro
wrestler come to life in a real, real sporting event.
If you if you just take one of these snapshots
in your mind, you're like, ah, but now you packed
it all together. Go back to last week at the
Cleveland Indians baseball when they when taking on the Angels
and he bites into the beer can and he chugs
(14:51):
it and he throws it down and he holds up
the lindoor jersey. Right, this is who they are. We're
not the villains, but we're also not the victims or
the Browns. You talk about talking about fit with Kyler Murray.
This guy fits with Cleveland, right then? He he fits
(15:12):
with Cleveland and they understand how to fit with him. Well,
let's go all in. Let's just be the guys that
don't care. Everybody else cares too much. Let's care too little.
Let's go out and have fun. Why should we in
preseason game? We're gonna go scool, right. Why do we
need to line up? Go back to the huddle? Line up,
go back to the huddle. Let's play it like you
(15:33):
played Madden. Just hold down the triangle at the end
of every play so that you can run the same
play over and over again. Can't stop it. Let's just go.
Let's go, let's get seven nothing, and then let's celebrate.
Why not? We're good, we know we're good. Let's have
fun being good. Why do we have to apologize for
being good. We didn't have to apologize. Nobody apologize to
(15:54):
us when we were really bad. They made fun of
us for being bad when one game in two years
they got off to a horrend start. Last year they
father coach and their offensive courting. Now they're good. Let's
have fun being good. I may even before the game
last night, Baker Mayfield's doing the Air of the night.
Phil Collins, you know, drum solo. This is who he is.
(16:17):
This is who the Browns are. You don't have to
dig it. I've heard Collins say I don't want my
franchise quarterback doing this, Like okay, but guess what. You
don't always get a choice of. Andrew Luck's not always available,
the only one Andrew Luck. You may not like how
they roll, but it's Cleveland. They've been irrelevant since they
put the new franchise back in after their old franchise left.
(16:40):
Remember everybody leaves Cleveland. Lebron left twice. The football team
left before go Look at all. How many star baseball
players started out their career in Cleveland then CC perfect example.
They all everybody leaves, but Baker seems to kind of
want to be there. Baker sporting that mustache, Baker kind
(17:02):
of our kind of guy. It's not super tall, not
super ripped, not super good looking. He's got a here's
a walk on. You know, he didn't actually win the
national championship, He wasn't actually number one on most people's
draft board. Sam Dara was, but there's something about him,
(17:26):
something about him, And the best way to get the
most out of Baker is to let Baker be Baker.
And they found a bunch of other guys that like
wood Baker's Baker and they kind of have that same persona.
If you're offended by it, that's a U problem because
there's nothing in it that it is offended. Is it
(17:47):
a little over the top, sure, sure, But other teams
are over the top conservative like New celebratedly we've been
there before, like okay, or let's just go have fun,
and it seems like that's where they're committed to doing.
We could do it the other way and it would
be fine, or we could do this way and it
would be fun. It would be fun. All right. We
(18:10):
got a lot to get to. Antonio Cromarti will join
us upcoming. Get his thoughts on our takeaways out Sam
Donald play well last night? Is there a quarterback controversy
with the New York Giants? We gotta get to But
first let's get a job. Guley with the news. No,
no turn on the news. This is the herd Line News.
(18:31):
A little bit of breaking news this morning. Doug Tiger
Woods has withdrawn from the Northern Trust due to an
oblique strain, he said in a statement. Due to a
mild oblique strain that led to pain and stiffness, I
have to woudraw from the Northern Trust. I went for
treatment early Friday morning, but unfortunately I'm still unable to compete.
He shot a four over seventy five yesterday. He has
(18:53):
really struggled since winning the Masters, and I feel like
he's kind of stuck where if he plays a he
can't stay healthy. But when he doesn't play and he
takes a lot of time off, he shows up for
these tournaments and he's just really rusty. Right the PGA,
he was awful because he hadn't played since he basically
did won the Masters. Is it possible to think now
(19:14):
that that winning the Masters this year that was it,
that was the pinnacle. He had worked all this way
to get back and he got it, and that's probably
where it ends. Um maybe, I mean Jack's last win
at forty six obviously didn't win again. But I think
if the idea is now he can only he really
(19:36):
is only super competitive at one or two majors a year,
that would be reasonable. But like, look, everything has to
be aligned, yeah, everything has to be perfect. And the
and the Master's Augusta is a place where he's played
it so much. It does set up well to his game.
I mean, shouldn't. I could make the argument he should
just focus on that every year, right, that should be
his tournament like that where he only like he's wrong
(19:56):
those for that. He's like he's one of those Spaniards
who only plays in the French Open. Sure, right, You're
like he's only good on clay courts, He's only going
to play the French Open. Like no, I don't know
if I get I go there yet, but I do
think that even the Tiger of you know, four or
five years ago, when he dominated the tour with the
(20:16):
exception of the majors, Like that's probably gone. He put
a lot into it. But this is what happened. And
this is really an interesting kind of side note to
the NFL is, how is Tom Brady's, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger,
Philip Rivers, how are they gonna stand up? It's south
that they can't play over one game, It's that they
(20:38):
can't Can they play nineteen games? Wow? Right? You know?
And none of the all these guys have long starting streaks.
They don't want to sit for a game at all. Right,
I don't want to sit a game. But maybe that's
the best thing because your body does break down. This
is the natural aging process of a person. You cure.
Is the Toby Keith saying, as good as I once was,
but I'm as good once as I ever was that
(20:59):
Tiger Woods here to the NFL. Rookies Kyler Murray and
Daniel Jones will talk about a little later, looked really
good in their preseason debuts. One rookie that did not
look so good Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins eight to fourteen,
one hundred and seventeen yards, but two interceptions. It seems
like the Redskins aren't in a rush to play him,
which is always what teams say until they get to
(21:22):
the season and start losing, they're probably gonna start col McCoy.
That excites nobody who didn't go to Texas. Yes, he's
remember Haskins is the hometown. I know he went to
a house statements from that area on the DNB. Right,
So the fans are gonna want to see him. They're
probably not gonna win early. What are your thoughts on
Haskins and even his head coach, right, Urban Meyer said
(21:43):
he's probably not ready, yes, to be a franchise leader. Y, yes,
but do you trust the Redskins to be able to
actually wait? I do only in that Bruce Allen has
unique power. Bruce Allen runs the business and football side.
There's no no multiple heads like right. So, and I
(22:03):
don't think Jake Gruden was necessarily in on this draft pick.
So he has to win right now. So he does
want a rookie he I think he even said I
need to make the playoffs or I'm probably gonna get fired. Right.
It's tough to do with a rookie quarterback. It's tough
to do with the rookie. It's not impossible be done.
You have to have a really good team around him.
I think Colt McCoy is a starter, and you know,
(22:23):
until they fall out of the playoff hunt. Look, he
has a big arm. He obviously put up big numbers
last year with Ohio stayed and I'm not convinced he
has great feet, and great feet sometimes gets you in
a bad position and you make bad throws. And he's
he's super young and inexperienced. We remember they couldn't get
off j. J T. Barrett because JA T. Barrett was
so much more experienced, you know how State's offense for
(22:46):
But um, eventually he'll be the guy. I think they're
gonna take it slow. And I know everybody says they're
gonna take it slow and they don't, but I think
they'll take it slow. And finally, staying in the NFC,
East Eagles quarterback Made Sudfeld got this last night with
Carson Wentz sitting out and looked good until he left
the game in an air cast. Turns out he broke
(23:08):
his wrists and his non throwing arm. Not season ending,
but still a pretty big injury considering Nick Foles is
no longer there. This is probably the most paid attention
to quarterback depth chart over the past couple of years.
Foles is gone. Wentz has never really been able to
stay healthy other than his rookie year. I believe this
could end up being an issue, could it not. Yeah,
(23:29):
they don't have depth. I mean obviously, obviously, if Carson
Wentz gets hurt season ender, of course they're everyone knows
they'd be done. But if you know, if you're gonna
if you're gonna be bringing in random guys to have
to spot start if Carson went get hurt, I mean,
Wentz was hurt in college, He's been hurt in the NFL.
He doesn't stay healthy, and now they might not have
anyone to replace him. You know, I thought it was funny.
(23:50):
I'm trying to think, who was he yesterday? Who got
Nick Bosa? Nick Bosa sprained his ankle, and they asked
Kyle Shanahan if he's in jury prone. He's like, well,
you know, like, look, he had the hernia last year
in college, but some huge, huge human being fell on him.
That's how he's pread. That's not an injury prone. I
would frankly say the same thing about Carson WENTZ. Like
(24:12):
I get that he towards ACL diving into the end zone,
got hit, but he got he got hit, but like
he got hit when he broke the little thing in
his back and he was still kind of playing through
it last year. So I don't know, it's more if
you have multiple soft tissue injuries. You know, Sam Bradford
was injury prone, sure, all right, Like Sam Bradford ran
out of bounds one time, stopped and blew up his ACL.
(24:33):
Like there's not a part of Sam Bradford's body that
hasn't been surgically repaired. Sure, So I don't think it's
as big an issue, but I do think you know,
now all of a sudden, we got Clayton Thorson and
you got to go out in the market, find a
find a quarterback. It's always injury. And that's John Guilt
with the News. Well that's the news, and thanks for
stopping by the Herdline News. The four time Pro bowler
(24:56):
played with the Chargers, the Jets, the Cardinals of the Colts.
He's Antonio Crimardi, or Crow as he's known. He joined
us now in the heard what was going on? Something
I was good to watch football on TV? Wasn't a
football is always good to watch? Okay, So like you
did this for eleven years in the NFL. Yes, what
can we really how much can we really take from
last night? Nothing? All right, well it's good show. Thanks
(25:19):
to appreciate your analysis. No, I mean you can't really
take anything from you know, what you see from the
start is I mean it's just one series and out. Yeah,
but when you were okay, so you're like, let's say
you're on the sideline right, like you get to be
a star and you're watching guys. You can tell if
a guy can play or can't play, can't you you
know that in practice? You find that out easy. In practice,
(25:41):
once you put my paths on, you separate the boards
from the man. So, I mean you find that out quickly.
But I think what everyone needs to understand, like the
preseason is it's address rehearsal. First game is let me
get let me get the quarterbacks and throws, like the
defense figure out what how we're going to communicate and
that's it. Everyone else is it's the younger guys that
comes in the start to players. So now you start
(26:01):
to figure out who your backups is going to be,
Who's on the bubble, you know, and who who can
possibly make the team. That's you know, that's what this is.
The priest in this really is for you figure out
who who your guys are. You already know who your
starters are going to be, but if you have somebody
that's competing to become a starter or being a bubble
or being a rotation, that person asked he gets to
(26:21):
go out and go play and perform and if he
does well, he makes a team. All right, let me
ask you about Kyler Murray. He doesn't fit the measurements
of a guy that's normally a starting star quarterback in
the National Football League. But I started the show saying, like, look,
I don't know if he's gonna make it. A lot
of people like him, but he's got a coach who
played in the same offense, has known him since he's
(26:42):
in high school, played in the NFL himself, younger guy,
Kim Relate. He's got a GM that's all in. Franchise,
that's all in, and like, honestly, the makeup of their
team with the terrible offensive line doesn't hurt this style
as much, not just because he's athletic, but because it's
a quick throw offense, and they have talent to throw.
He's got David Johnson's a dump off guy. You know.
He's got Christian Kirk, He's got Larry Fitzgerald. He's got
(27:04):
some guys to get rid of the ball quickly too.
I don't know if it work, but if it's gonna work,
this is this is the most likely scenario. Do you
think Cayla Murray succeeds. I think he does. I think
he has assess in the NFL it's gonna he's gonna
have his bumps and bruises. That's that's what any rookie quarterback.
But I think what he, what Cliff Kingsbury come trying
to do, is make sure that he makes safe throws honestly,
(27:25):
and what the offense the defense has given him and
take appanage of that. I think what they're trying to
do more of two is getting them out side of
the pocket. He throws the ball well on the run. Men,
as you can see, I mean he throws the ball
well on the run. And honestly, if I can stay
in front of the sticks the whole entire time going
through happing down the field, I don't care if it's
a fifteen play, driving score defense on the field of
whole entire time. Antonio Camardi joined us in the hurd um,
(27:47):
Doug Gotli feeling in for Colin. The Browns get to win,
and I mean, but I don't even if they even
win the game. I've honestly no way has any idea.
I know they got the ball and they marched right
down the field and scored. They went no huddle offense,
and they're celebrating and it's playing up their personalities. They
did win the game thirty to ten. Any issues with
the brown and the Browns not just running no huddle
(28:08):
but allowing all these first dates a preseason Like, dude,
it's a preseason game and they're celebrating as if they're
going to the playoffs. Do you have any issue? No,
I don't. It's football. We're we're we're you know, we're
entertainance once we get a chance to score, and I
don't have a problem with it. But I think the
only thing I do have a problem when you run
around a two minute offense, hurry up offense. And the
(28:29):
first game of the it was weird. It was weird, right,
I've never seen it before, you know, but that's the
way they do if they're gonna run that offense, like
that's what they're gonna run the offense. But you know,
the whole thing is, you know, football is all about
having fun, and they get a chance, we get a
chance to celebrate now in the league. Yep, why not
take a pan of chevery whenever you can. I'm with you.
(28:50):
Daniel Jones has gone from why the hell do we
draft Daniel Jones? Two plays well after Eli Eli's drive,
drive doesn't doesn't go well, and there's a call, well,
maybe maybe there should be a quarterback controversy. Is it
time right now for the Giants to move on? And Jill,
let's just start over. Let's go with Daniel Jones. No,
I think Daniel Jones sit a year. He still can
(29:10):
learn some things. They didn't make some great throws, yes,
but some of those throws a good quarterback was there,
pick it off, you know. And it's just the point
of this understanding. He's gonna have growing things. He's gonna
go through the preseason. He's gonna get a chance and
the opportunity to play more, play longer, you know, and
it's it's gonna give him an opportunity to get more
comfortable with the offense. He's gonna give him a chance
(29:31):
to be able to go out and just go play ball,
you know. And I think there's no quarterback controversy. Eli
Man is a quarterback at the end of the day.
I think for Daniel Jones, he gets to City year,
maybe next year he's a starting quarterback. But I think
it would do him some good to sit back, learn
from Eli, understand everything they're trying to do, and then
go from there. Um Antonio Camardi joining us in the herd.
(29:55):
Tom Brady is was he forty two years old? Forty
two forty two years old? At some point there has
to be a decline, right like it. He's a human being,
and I know his hair looks better. Frankly, he's better
looking than he used to be. But at some point,
like look every and I know that when you play
like defensive back like you did, eventually your speed goes.
(30:16):
This is not a speed position, so but your legs
do can go, your arm can go. Like at some
point there's gonna be decline, isn't there. Well, this is
always gonna be declined in something. But I think from
his mental aspects and the way he works this stuff.
He always challenges and stuff. You know, he can go
as out and compete just just when it's just him,
you know, going through his drill. So I don't I
(30:36):
don't see a decline right now. I think a lot
of people are expecting him decline, but I think that's
only motivation for him at the end of the day.
That motivates him the most. If you're gonna make sure,
if you're gonna say, hey, you know, Tom Brady, you
can't play anymore, He's gonna prove you wrong at some
point though he won't be able to play anymore right
now this year, This year, no gronk, but you know
(30:59):
he has Ben Watson's there. Who's I mean, he's spending
for four games, but do you get Ben Watson there?
He's not a grunt, but he's a guy that's gonna
be dependable that he can find. Ain't gonna those you
knows exactly where he's supposed to be. So I mean,
it's not a point of just saying that he's going
to decline. I don't see anything where uh that decline
(31:21):
has shown. It's not gonna be like a Payton mannings
where it went flat. But that's what happens, though. It
goes like that where all of a sudden, dudes just
can't play, Like pay Manning went so bad. They're like,
let's get brock Osweller out there. And then and then
and then they they you know, they used to carried
him to his last Super Bowl and look as good
as Brady was in spots, the last drive against the Rams,
(31:44):
the last drive against the Chiefs, for example, um two touchdowns,
three interceptions in the playoffs last you should have a
fourth interception against the Chiefs like he wasn't tom Brady
tom Brady? Yeah, we say it's not tom Brady, tom Brady.
But when you're in the playoffs, everybody knows where you're going.
They just take away some of those options. That's all.
That's all it is. Take away the number one, the
(32:06):
number two options, and let's say it, can you beat
us with three and four? That's all it is. And
we understand that Tom bradys. Yes, he's getting old. He's
forty two, about it, you know, four to two years old.
He's been his twentieth season, so I mean, you don't
expect him to play at a high level, but he's
the greatest of all time right now? Yes to the Cowboys. Um,
(32:29):
Zeke's the only one who's not in camp. But now,
all of a sudden, you know you got a suspension
the defensive side of the ball. You know you got
a couple of guys. You know, Jalen Smith needs to
get paid. Over there Byron Jones needs to get paid.
Over there, you got Mark Cooper needs to get paid.
That needs to get paid. Zeke wants to get paid
even though he's only entering year four of what it's
(32:50):
essentially a five year guaranteed deal. Is it like, Look,
the Cowboys are a team that we talk about a lot. Yes,
but there are a lot of distraction. There's reasons we're
talking about them. Are there too many distractions for a
really talented football team to live up to their potential? No,
I don't think there's timing interstraction. I think at the
end of the day, this is what people for to realize.
This is a business, no matter how we look at
(33:12):
it as a business, and business is going to be
taken care of at the time ownerships feel like it's
the right time to take care of it, not just
because one person goes out and wants to hold out
and costs himself forty thousand dollars a day, you know,
or you have a quarterback situation, you know. But with
a Maori Cooper, everything is they're there. They understand that
(33:34):
their contract has to get done, but they're there because
they love the game of football. Not saying that he
doesn't love it, but these guys want to make sure
that they're there for the team, for the contracts and
get done. And I think that's the way it needs
to be handled. Yeah, show up, you know, show your
good will. Yeah, you're just show your good will. And
this is what I always say. This is all I
always say. People always say, oh, you know, is he
(33:54):
could have an injury or something could happen. I always
say this, if it's in God's plan for you to
have an injury, that injuries is gonna happen no matter
what goes on, because that's already destined. It's already it's
already planned to happen. So don't say him like, oh,
you know, he can he can risk injury. He cannot
be If it's gonna happen, It's gonna happen no matter
how you try to skip it. Come about it. Injury
(34:17):
is gonna happen no matter how you look at it.
Antonia Comardi, four time Pro bowler, eleven years in the
Nation Football League, A ton of knowledge, Eric Crow, thanks
so much for joining us. Appreciated, Thank you for having
me on. The Raiders are obviously not happy with Antonio Brown.
He can't play because because a frostbite on his feet.
That's a that's a new one, right, can't play frostbite.
But the real surprise is a problem for the Raiders
(34:38):
that might even shock you. I'll share it with you
next time. Dog Gottlieb, this is the Herd. Be sure
to catch live editions of the Herd week daysonnun Easter
not a Empacific. The Klan Raiders obviously are now stars
of HBO's Hard Knocks. Interesting they had huge numbers, huge
numbers for the first of the series of Hard Knocks,
(34:59):
where there wasn't a lot to it. Right, there's John
Gruden's totally prepared, very awkward speech about dreams and not
liking dreams, liking nightmares instead. It was like, I don't
know if that's what John Gruden did when he got
in at four in the morning. It made his chucky faces,
(35:19):
but it was I'm sure it sounded better in his
head than it did coming out of his mouth and
ending up on hard knocks. There wasn't a lot to it, right,
There was some Antonio Brown stuff. His kids were really cute.
Where Roethlisberger like Daddy doesn't play for the Steelers anymore?
Where's Derek Carter? Amazing? That part was probably the probably
(35:42):
the best part. By the best part was the kids.
He throw kids in there, and I'm I'm cooked. But
take a listen to John Gruden. This is yesterday, and
he was asked about Antonio Brown's foot situation. It's like
waiting for Santa Claus. I've been really excited to coaches. Man.
I think he's a great player, and he's a great competitor,
(36:02):
and we need his life in this offense and on
this football team. So you hear him say things like that,
and I understand his frustration. John Gruden's frustration. He's not
only the head coach kind of runs the whole thing, right.
I mean, he's the one who hired Mike Mayock, but
he green lit this. But John Gruden's an offensive coach
(36:25):
and he's his new toy. Like imagine if there's that
one toy you dreamed of for Christmas and you put
on your list and you're a good kid, and you
sat on Santa's laugh and you're like, look, I gotta
have this toy. This is the toy that I want
to get. And you're good all year and you finally
got the toy and you get the toy that's his
batteries not included, and Senna or his elves forgot forgot
(36:46):
the forgot the batteries. It would be super You like, well,
there's all these other toys, like yes, but this was
my toy. This was the one that I wanted. The
other ones are cool, but this was the one that
I wanted, and we forgot to get the bat that's
this right, like Antonio Brown. And it's one thing to
get hurt tweaking a hamstring, you know it's wan't they
(37:08):
jam a finger? You got hurt? Ad can't you got sick?
Like these things happen that happen. It's a human being
getting your feet frost bitten in a cryo chamber. Like
that's a new one because you didn't wear the proper
footwear cryo chamber. Han didn't have any proper footwear. Now,
(37:31):
Han Solo was blind for a good portion of Return
of the Jedi, but his feet apparently were fine. What
was Han Solo wearing? And get that, Get that to
Antonio Brown before he gets in the cryo chamber again.
But John Gruden's mad because this was his toy. And
maybe more importantly, let me translate it for you. I'm
(37:54):
not mad that Antonio Brown's not playing and competing right now.
He'll be fine one, and he brings up the level
of everybody on our field because he's a true superstar.
He's seen that, you know what it's like to be
the best in his position, best in his field. It
Tyrell Williams is our one right now he becomes our two,
would change our whole offense. But the whole reason for
(38:15):
bringing in Antonio Brown is to figure out if Derek
Carr is good enough. Alight, Like Derek Carr building a
house right next to John Gruden's house in Las Vegas
tells me that Derek Carr probably doesn't think he's good enough,
right because it's like it's almost like sucking up to
the teacher. Everybody sees through it, including John Gruden. But alright, alright, alright,
(38:39):
it's better than people give him credit. He's tougher than
people give him credit. Let's give m Antonio Brown, Let's
give him Tyrell Williams. We give him a star who
can break through a double team, and we'll see can
we get the most possibly out of him? Is he
good enough to keep? But John Gruden even can't even
truly begin to evaluate his quarterback because he doesn't have
(39:04):
a star wide receiver, can't truly evaluate. And to people
who want to point out that, well, the Raiders aren't
going to be good anyway. No one's disputing that they've
been bad for twenty years. They went mid playoffs once
in twenty years. Cruden comes back in and he there's
(39:26):
no magic Pixie Dusk. You gotta work your way out
of bad contracts they did. You gotta work your way
into draft picks. They did, and they had a couple
of primetime assets. And they got three first round draft
picks out of those two assets, who are ending up
going to get paid? You know, one got paid ninety
million dollars last year. And I mean, I'm guessing Amari
Cooper is gonna get somewhere in the neighborhood of seventeen
(39:48):
eighteen million dollars a year. I mean, Michael Thomas got
sixty million essentially guaranteed. Over three, it's twenty million a year.
Marie Cooper is going to be in that range, and
Antonio Brown's better. They actually brought in a better player
than than Amari Cooper at a lower amount and a
guy who's more accomplished. It just a complete workaholic. But like,
(40:09):
look at the Raiders in a fair light. Doesn't if
it wasn't John Gruten coaching, And you're like, man, you
gotta fix the Raiders. You kind of gotta start over
light a match. And they did, and now they're trying
to figure out is Derek car goodenough? We don't know.
You know why we don't have Antonio Brown because Antonio
Brown takes two guys off of the defense every time
he lines out wide. And if you can win ten
(40:33):
on nine, then you can play quarterback in the National
Football League. And that's it's really nine on nine. You
take the quarterback out of it because he's not a runner,
but nine on nine becomes, you know, more of an
even game. So Gruden's frustration and consternation over I gotta
(40:55):
get Antonio Brown back he's my guy. I gotta get
my It's not just the feat, how it settles the offense.
It's this year is about evaluating Derek Carr. Is he
good enough to get that one way plane ticket to
Las Vegas? Or did you get jettisoned elsewhere? All right?
Coming up next? What a change in New York? What
(41:18):
a change you guys? Remember the draft? After the draft,
everybody just crushing the Daniel Jones draft pick. Dave Getleman's
an idiot, He's lost his mind. How could they do this? Well,
I give you one preseason game and suddenly there's discussions
over whether Daniel Jones should start. Right now, we'll tell
(41:38):
you what should happen next. In the Herd one More Heard.
The Herd streams twenty four hours a day, seven days
a week within the iHeartRadio app. Search Herd to listen
live or on demand whenever you like. What up? Welcome in.
This is the Herd. Whoever you may be and however
you may be making us part of your day. Thanks
(41:59):
so much. I'm Doug Gottliebian for Colin Cowherd on the
I Heart Radio app, Fox Sports Radio and FS two.
I hope you're having a great, great day, Ready for
a spectacle the weekend. And someone's wrong my TV last night,
John Galat someone's wrong. There were men helmets shoulder pads
(42:23):
and they appear to be playing football. It's weird, heird,
really weird, exciting but weird. And then something even stranger
happened last night. Okay, I know life comes at you fast,
got it. But NFL Draft time. The surprise pick of
(42:48):
the first round, the New York Giants six picks select
Daniel Jones out of Duke and from Colin to mel
kiper Junior to Tie McShay too, you picked the analyst.
Everybody was shocked by what they saw New York, Hello,
(43:09):
shocked by what they saw Daniel Jones, who you like,
excuse me, okay, and so he was not exactly role
given the red carpet treatment. Dave Gettleman, the general manager
of the Giants who loves to talk and hear himself talk,
(43:33):
was the only one saying Daniel Jones was our guy,
and the Redskins were gonna take him, and so we
hopped up and took him the Redskins like nine, we
weren't really gonna take him. Psych got you here you go?
So we go from that moment where Daniel Jones was
you took him where you took him with what pick
(43:54):
after passing on Sam Darnold the year before, Hey, sure,
go for it. He went from there to last night.
He played well and Eli did not. So now there's
discussions as to and not not if, but when Daniel
(44:17):
Jones should take over this year and should should it
be right away? So the little lower third of your television,
if you're watching an f FS two as you go
around the dial, and there are other sports channels, I'm
not in denial of it, and every sports channel has
(44:39):
they asked the question on there, so that if you're
in the bar, you're looking up, you're trying to figure
out what they're talking about. Right? Is that called the chiron?
Is that what that is? For now we'll call it
the Kiron. It's called the Kiron. The Chiron. You're gonna
see do we have a quarterback controversy in New York? Now,
(45:01):
if you've been watching or pay attention to the Giants
up until maybe like the last week, you're actually laughing
at this. Maybe that's part of me insight. I'm laughing
because I pay attention to the Giants the whole time,
not just what I saw last night that we went
from Will this guy ever be a starting quarterback? Too?
Will he be the starting quarterback this year? Right? That's
(45:25):
where we are. Will he be the starting quarterback this year?
Study Chris Carter, of course, the Hall of Famer. He
lives and works in New York City. As he works
on first things first, he had this to say about
why Daniel Jones won't be the starting quarterback for the
Giants anytime soon. To think that the Giants and anyone
(45:48):
in the Giants organization is thinking this kid is gonna
start the first half of the season, we are crazy.
Eli Manning is the starter for the Giants, all right.
We've been trying to replace Eli for three years, and
now they desk Eli should be replaced when a guy
is better than him. Right now, Daniel Jones is not
better than him, And when he is, I'll call for
(46:08):
Eli's job and for Eli to sit down. Until then,
it's just a rookie learning the system. Played in his
first preseason game. Eli is light years better than him.
Eli is light years better than him. Now I don't
know if Eli is still light years better than him,
because Eli Manning hasn't been a particularly good quarterback the
past couple of years, as most guys who normally age
(46:31):
are not as good as his brother, and his brother
aged even though his brother had a lot more surgeries
than he had, and about this age and time, his
brother stopped having the ability to throw football. It's not
crazy to think that Eli's washed up, but it is
crazy how quickly things have turned, how quickly the narrative changes. Right,
we go from Daniel Jones what a joke? To why
(46:52):
don't we put Daniel Jones in now and just live
with some of the mistakes. That's that's how overreactive we are.
Like if you thought it's just a regular season, because
the NFL's regular season, You'll have one game you'll watch,
you be like, Wow, that team is good and this
team's terrible. Then the next week you'll be it'll flip.
It's a week to week league, and some of it's
(47:13):
based on matchups and injuries and other things, but it
really is a week to week league. But to go
from e Eli is our guy to wait, maybe we
should try this Daniel Jones thing. The only way it
happens with Daniel Jones is if he has to be
light years better than ELI, and he can only be
(47:35):
light years better than ELI if ELI is atrocious, and
that will play out over time. Remember he's had injuries
to his wide receivers ELI. Right, his offensive line's never
been good. Recently has not been good. And so with
that mind, eventually this will handle itself. Is that on itself?
This is like and I don't know how you guys
(47:57):
do it with cars. Well, you don't have to tell
me the make and model of your car? How old
is your car? Only one year in a new car? Yeah?
Still have the new car smell? Yeah. I try to
preserve it as long as I can. Wow, do you
have a strict new car smell? If you have strict rule?
Nobody eating, nobody drinking your car pretty much? Yeah? Wow?
(48:19):
Yeah you're no fun, no fun at all. But that's okay.
I mean it keeps the resale value up. Some people
they change out cars every two or three years. Some
people they drive their cars, you know, all right, one
hundred thousand miles and I get a new car. Some
people drive their cars until they don't run anymore. Right,
that's like like a cord owners They go for like
(48:41):
three four hundred thousand miles, Like, look, I'm just gonna
drive this thing until it stops, and when it stops,
I'll get out. I'll get an uber and then I'll
go get another one. Meanwhile, cost me twenty grand and
I bought it fifteen years ago, right Like some people
are like that, And that's apparently who the giants are.
The giants are gonna run this day into the ground
(49:02):
and when it's so painfully incredibly obvious, they will then
go get a new one. And they have the new
one waiting. They got an unspecial order to day. He's
a little bit more athletic. You know, he played for
the same college coach. Like it all kind of makes sense.
He's gonna grow in to get his man man muscles,
his man quarterback body, and he'll be fine. But if
(49:27):
you think benching Eli Manning is easy after one preseason game,
remember they got ownership on board, the general manager, and
the head coach on board, and they all got fired
because they sat Eli Manning for one game. And the
only reason they sat Eli Manning for one game was
because they wanted to pull him out in the fourth quarter,
and he refused to be pulled out in the fourth quarter.
He said, look, you want to pull me out in
(49:47):
the third and fourth quarter, just take me out for
the game. They said, fine, Geno Smith started. Everybody got fired.
So in the car and now allogy if they were
going to try and get out of get out of
a lease or get out of get out of this car,
and they're gonna lose money. Everybody gets fired for trying
(50:08):
to do the right thing. That's what happened before us.
Now they're like, all right, fine, you know what, just
running into the ground, completely running into the ground. And
once you do so, we'll have a guy who's ready.
I mean, you'd have to think that Eli has to
be as bad as Peyton Manning was in order to
get hooked. And how bad was Peyton Manning nine touchdowns
(50:29):
seventeen interceptions in his final year as a starter. I
believe he's the only human being alive has been bench
for brock Oswealler, like Paxton Lynch was he a starter
and he got hurt last year brock Osweller started, but
that was only after Ryan Tannehill got hurt. Peyton Manning,
(50:49):
inarguably one of the ten greatest quarterbacks in the history
of the National Football League, got bench for brock Oswaller
because he was old and because he couldn't throw a
football anymore. It was that that's the kind of obvious
it has to be in order for Daniel Jones to
get a start, all right. Coming up next in the Herd,
I'm Doug gottlie filling in for Colin. When I look
(51:11):
at the landscape of the NBA, it may sound weird,
but our love for the Clippers, though it has no ends,
they might not be the best team in town. I'll
explain next. I'm Doug gottlieb This is the Herd. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays and
nun Easter nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio FS
(51:32):
one and the iHeartRadio app. Dodgers Astro's Yankees. Right, what
else do I need to know? Dodgers, Astro's Yankees. Oh,
Angels cannot win a game? He ye seven game losing
Street lost the Red Sox last night. I apparently am
the only human being in Los Angeles who cares. Security
(51:54):
guys are like a going Dodger game. One's going today,
one's going tomorrow. Like thank you for pouring salt into
the wound. Hyers look good though. We'll see about that
that bullpen. Bryce Harper one hundred and thirty two strikeouts,
one hundred thirty two strikeouts. But um the Nats, his
former team, sixty one to fifty three. That's kind of
(52:14):
surprising anyway, Um saw this from Jason Kidd. So Jason
Kidd has spoken. People think that Jason Kidd's like, every
time Frank Vogel gets up, Frank Bogo is gonna have
to have like the the backup camera. Always on. What
do we do before the backup camera? Right in the
(52:35):
world's Greatest inventions, we really say, like, that's the greatest
invention sliced bread. But now, since many of us don't
eat bread, why don't why don't we change the expression
it's the greatest invention since the backup camera. That right,
Like you get a car and you don't have a
backup camera, like wait, hold on, I gotta do this,
(52:57):
oh my neck, oh, Keven doing my an owl? Oh
moving around left, moving around of the ride. The backup
camera is the greatest invention ever. And I will hear nothing. Now,
you're not technically supposed to just simply stare at the
backup camera like an old lady like, oh, I gotta
avoid that. But that's what we all do. Actually, what
(53:21):
we do is we got our cell phone in one
hand and the backup camera and the other and we're
tweeting and texting and backing up and hoping we don't
hit something. The funny part about the backup camera and
the sensors we have now in our cars. How many
of you have a car that has those b b
by by sensors and you get annoyed because if they're
(53:42):
a little overreactive, like you have a computer that actually
gives you a heads up that you might hit something,
and you are the one who gets mad. Anyway, backup camera.
So Jason Kidd, who we haven't heard from since we
thought for sure he was, I mean, he's stabbing Frank
(54:04):
Vogel in the back right, okay, anytime he goes up.
Anytime Frank Vogel gets a pat in the back from
Jason Kidd, he's feeling for blood somewhere on his back.
But the Hall of Famer said, quote, when you talk
about Anthony Davis, he can put the ball on the floor,
he can pass. We all know he can shoot the three.
He can post up defensively, blockshouts, rebound, He has a
(54:26):
total package, which is why he's one of the best
players in the world. So for us to have him
with Lebron, KU's and Rondo, and how do Rondo make
this list, it just makes it that much easier. This
will be the first time, his first time playing with
someone like Lebron. Well, duh, there's the Captain Navius, someone
(54:50):
like Lebron. He's been on bad teams. Now he's in
the team with the guy who's been the best player
in the league for a good portion of years. I
do think that this is how most people view Anthony
Davis as a top five NBA star, Only we haven't
seen him be a top five NBA star because in
addition to be in small market and not having the
(55:13):
best management and all the other issues that worked against
the Pelicans, they would have injuries anytime they got to
the playoffs as well, and Anthony Davis had to evolve
like he look he was really young and had to
really change and fix and work on his offensive game
and become a shooter like when they first made the playoffs.
This is a there's years a little factoid. Do you
(55:33):
know the only time that Oklahoma City didn't make the
playoffs in the last decade. It was the Pelicans made
it instead of them. I was like five years ago
and I was the It was Scotty Brooks's last year.
Kevin Durant missed fifty one games, and they missed it
because Anthony Davis made a three I think on Christmas
(55:54):
Day in Oklahoma City. It was his only three point
shot made of the year. It's it. So he's gone
from that and being, you know, a mid thirties three
point shooter. And by the way, every player I believe
on the Lakers is a plus thirty percent plus three
point shooter. Sudden. Now, all of a sudden, you got
(56:15):
from that to being able to shoot handle the basketball verse.
Though he's always been great defensively, he's a good passer.
He's viewed in league circles as a top five player.
Now NBA league circles top five players has when you
say top five players, somehow there's ten guys in the
top five. Right. Well, you got Katie but he's hurt,
and he got Lebron but he was hurt, and he
(56:35):
got Anthony Davis, and he got Steph He's started. I
got James Harden. You got Jannis like, well, you're at six,
how do you have trust to me? They're all top five,
but Anthony Davis is in that group. And what's maybe
most interesting is though the Clippers are huge winners, and
I'm not trying to diminish what the Clippers have done.
You hire a tremendous management team, You have a sitting
(56:58):
head coach who's been an NBAH champion. You establish a
remarkable culture of guys that other people have passed on
or moved away, like the Eastern Rockets who made that
trade for Chris Paul. And you build a culture. You
have a quality coach, you have great front office work,
(57:19):
and you have an owner who wants to build his
own arena, going to build a new practice facility. Like
everybody's kind of all in all pulling the same direction.
And if you grew up in LA and I grew
up in southern California, Orange County, it's the county south
of Los Angeles County. The idea that anyone, let alone
two star players would pick the Clippers over the Lakers
sounds like the beginning of a joke that ends with
a very funny punchline. But it is not. It is
(57:44):
not all that said, Anthony Davis or Paul George, Anthony Davis,
Lebron James, or Kawhi Leonard. This one's hard because Lebron
wasn't his old Lebron self last year statistically was great.
(58:04):
He's not the same, but Lebron's done it for longer
and better. And then you look at the ancillary parts
and Kyle Kuzma's coming into his own, Like, that's seventy
five points to start every game. Kyle Kuzma, Lebron James,
Anthony Davis, You're starting with seventy five points starting with it.
(58:25):
Then you add in Danny Green, who didn't shoot well
in the playoffs but had a great year shooting the
ball and doesn't need the basketball. So I look at
the Lakers and I think they bring back some guys
that have been through it with the Lakers, so they
don't have complete turnover just like the Clippers. And while
(58:46):
they don't have the culture of the Clippers, they have
Lebron back, they have Anthony Davis who was hungry to win.
They have Kyle Kuzma, like they're the co champions to
win this thing. Lebron's gotta stay healthy. He's got to
show that he can be lighter on his feed. He
has lost weight. But I kind of think what Jason
Kidd's saying is, don't you people understand how good Anthony
(59:09):
Davis is, Like, look, Paul George has had multiple shoulder
surgeries now and he's a good player. He's not viewed
as a top five player in the league. Anthony Davis is.
And that's what Jay kidds saying. Let's get to John
Goulet with the news. No, no, this is the herd
Line news. So we may have some breaking Antonio Brown news.
(59:32):
Just a report, but according to Chase Williams of WPXI
in Pittsburgh, Antonio Brown has gone radio silent on the Raiders.
That means that they don't know where he is or
how the injury is doing. Again just for a Pittsburgh report,
but kind of interesting. Now that could be because Antonio
Brown feels really dumb for injuring himself in a cryo
(59:54):
chamber because he forgot to put socks on. Or I mean, like, look,
let's look at the pot his side. At least he
covered up another area of your body that you wouldn't
want to have prospit, right, or that could show where
his priorities lie. As you said earlier, all of our
priorities should lie there, right, that's not that's not a
bad thing. As you said earlier, Gruden seems a little
(01:00:15):
frustrated that Brown isn't around, maybe because he's an offensive
coach and he wants his new toy. Uh. Let's listen
to Gruden talking about if he had gotten any update
Tranke this thing up from it are still gathering. I
don't have any information other than that, I'm not, like
I said, I'm not going to get into the exact
(01:00:37):
nature of the feet. I'm just not. When you hear that,
and you hear that Antonio Brown isn't in communication with them,
it makes you think that maybe there is some truth
to this report because he certainly doesn't seem to want
to talk about it. It doesn't have now either he's
not volunteering the information or he doesn't have it himself.
(01:00:58):
What do you make of it? I may I have
no idea. I actually don't think. It's the craziest thing
that he's radio silence right, like he went to a
specialist and he's freaking out because he can't believe he
did it to himself. It's very possible, right, It's also
possible self inflicted. Self inflicted wounds hurt a lot worse, right,
They just do they just do. Now, it's not that.
(01:01:21):
It's actually not that way with like like pinching, Like
you pinch yourself, it doesn't hurt somebody else pinch and
you're like, hey, we're doing pinch of me. But true wounds,
I think emotionally, I guess maybe the emotional pain is greater,
Like when you hurt somebody or you hurt yourself, that
hurts a lot worse than when somebody hurts you. Is
it possible HBO leaks this rumor because we're gonna find out, right,
(01:01:44):
if he's not on the next three episodes of Hard Knocks,
we're gonna know. Yeah, he's probably not talking of them,
Like we have cameras in the room here. What's crazy
about it is like he though he like Hard Knocks.
The video of him running you're watching now, if you're
watching on f two, is of him running routes on
Hard Knocks. And their whole thing was like they gave
(01:02:04):
mcclearance to go, and he went, and he probably did
too much. So Antonio Brown very much wanted you to
know that when he practices it's one hundred percent all
the time. Yes, that was very clear through when I go,
I'd go a hundred, right, I'd go one hundred and
modicon one hundred right, Modicon one hundred is better than
normal one hundred. Doug, do you know what twenty thirteen
(01:02:26):
was for the Dallas Cowboys? Twenty fourteen was DeMarco Murray? Right?
That was a DeMarco Murray here. You're not going to
guess this. Okay, you're Dallas Cowboys back. Well, twenty thirteen
was the last time the Cowboys didn't have an important
defensive player suspended. I like that for a long time.
Twenty fourteen Orlando Scandrick, twenty fifteen, Rolando McLean, twenty sixteen
(01:02:49):
DeMarcus Lawrence, and seventeen and eighteen David Irving and both
of them. Randy Gregory I believe hasn't been suspended yet,
but that's problems coming coming. And if not, he'll do
he's not reading state, He's gotta implied and say yeah,
it's it's a whole well either way. This year they
already had someone suspended yesterday, defensive end Robert Quinn suspended
two games for violating the performance enhancing substance policy. The
(01:03:12):
Cowboys traded for Quinn this offseason. It was done when
they were negotiating a long term deal with the Marcus Lawrence,
so it may have been more of a just in
case we can't get a deal, let's bring somebody in.
So he's not a crucial member of the defense, and
he's not healthy, so he probably wouldn't play the first
two games any sure, But this is a team that
considers themselves super Bowl contender. So anytime you're losing guys
(01:03:34):
like this early or in the offseason, that's obviously not great.
What does this say to you about the Cowboys, Well,
it reminds me of literally, Steve Spurrier was out South
Carolina and one year they'd always played Georgia early in
the year, and one year they did not, and they
asked him about not playing George and the Milanier and
(01:03:55):
he said, well, we liked my Georgia early the year
because they always have got suspended, right, And everybody laughed
and wanted Steve Spurrier. And he's in the Spurrier zone.
He can kind of say what he wants. But he
was also right. He also if you said, like, hey,
every year Georgia has somebody spend it. When Mark Rick
was there, that was true. The same thing with Dallas Cowboys.
So just it's on brand, on brand for the Cowboys,
(01:04:18):
it's North Dallas forty, it's it's who they are. I mean,
the idea that any other any other team, Ezeki Elliott
goes and meets with the commissioner to beg his way
out of getting suspended for you know, kind of big
dog in that security guard in Las Vegas. He comes
back and no chance. He asked for not just a
contract extension, but a massive raise. The Cowboys. This is
(01:04:40):
kind of how they roll, sure, right, this very much
very much on brand. I also, I actually think this
might change shoot a lot of those earlier suspensions and
a lot of problems that the Cowboys came from. They
didn't handle their cap well and they had to take
chances on a lot of guys because they just simply
didn't have enough talent on their team. I would argue
that that's no longer the case. That was the case
(01:05:02):
five years ago, right, But that's also that's that was
the Bengals thing, right when the Bengals of Pacman Jones,
the Bengals um with Jevantees perfect whatever. Well, they were
draft guys in the draft that had slipped because they
had off the field Michael Johnson out of out of
Georgia Tech was the first round guy went in the
third round. They would draft guys that had slipped because
of off the field stuff, and it shouldn't shock them
(01:05:25):
when the off the field stuff becomes part of it.
Always did that. Memor Pacman was one of theirs. They
had to you know, a lot of their Now they've
since changed that, right. They they would draft like they
drafted Jalen Smith, who felt because of an injury, he
was a great guy. Right, I feel like that it's
a little bit of the Jerry used to have total
control and now Stephen Jones has a little bit of control,
and that's the shift. It's kind of funny to me, though,
(01:05:47):
that they still have guys getting suspected. Hey, listen, John Dorsey,
you know he was Tyreek Hill when he was in
Kansas City. Now he's in Cleveland, and they course went
after um, what's his name came over from huh, Kareem
Kareem Hunt. You know, he takes some chances and Kansas City.
They take chances, you know. Uh, they went and got um,
(01:06:07):
what's his name from Seattle, Frank Clark from Seattle. Yeah.
I'm like, you're gonna get a Frank Clarks from Seattle
when you just had the Kareem Hunt deal and you
got the Tyree Hill thing. But that's how they Sometimes
the guys are so talented, they take chances. And that's Uh.
John Goulay with the News, Well that's the news, and
thanks for stopping by the Herd Line News. You know,
(01:06:29):
let's let's bring in with the Herd Satellite Network. Um.
Danny Cannell joins us, of course, former NFL quarterback, former
Florida State star and you can see his show on
the Bench with Danny Cannell and uh Rajah Bell on
CBS Sports dot Com. He joins us now in the
(01:06:50):
Herd and DK thanks so much for spending some time
with us. Like, look, Kyler Murray looked good. A lot
of stuff kind of outside the hashes. I don't know
about throwing over the middle, but he did look company
and he did look comfortable, and that offense moved and
moved quickly. What do you think the likelihood of success
this year? Is for Kyler Murray, I think pretty good.
(01:07:11):
I mean, doud You gotta consider that the expectation on
rookie quarterbacks in twenty nineteen is that they should play
pretty decent. Now, are they going to put up numbers
like Patrick Mahomes did in his second year? Fifty sounds no,
but you've seen a trend where there have been better numbers. Mean,
Baker Mayfield had an outstanding rookie season twenty seven touchdowns.
(01:07:32):
It's a rookie NFL record. That's great, and that was
an awesome season, but it is be kind of becoming
the norm pass happy offenses. You're going to see Kyler
Murray playing in a system that Clip Kingsbury is going
to design specifically for his skill set and as you
just mentioned, getting him outside, moving around outside the pocket,
getting it out of his hands quick, utilizing his legs
(01:07:53):
a little bit. Where I do think the expectation for
Kyler Murray would be a solid individual season. And now
he's gonna have a lot of, you know, three or
four interception games. He's gonna make some critical mistakes. They're
probably not going to be a very good football team,
But statistically, I think Kyler Murray will have a pretty
productive year with Cliffs Kingsbury system. Any issue with the Browns,
(01:08:17):
Like the Browns last night, they came out, they went
no huddle and march right down the field. I thought
it was a little weird, right, I thought it was
a little weird. But on some level, DK, I just thought,
this is kind of the Browns, like, hey, you know what,
let's just rip it, let's just go and have fun,
and let's let's be the team that doesn't care throw
conventional wisdom to the wind. Then of course they celebrate,
(01:08:38):
and I know they're doing without OBJ and without Jarvis
Landry last night and any any negative with Cleveland and
their personalities now they're handling things. So to start it off, Douggie,
I think last night was an outstanding performance for them.
Obviously they looked like they had been, you know, without
issue all offseason. Looked like everybody had full attendance offseason,
(01:09:00):
no tas and everything just looks great. And that's what
you should. Wrinkling in the no huddle and going up temps.
So I thought every team usually experiments a little bit,
Hey why don't we try this in the preseason. If
it succeeds, great, maybe we'll use it and even better
opposing teams that we're going to see throughout the season
and see the capability of it. So now they have
to prepare for it, right. So that was a big
(01:09:22):
reason the Browns probably around that up Temple and it
worked awesome. Nobody's expecting that to, you know, kick off
the game, you're opening drive in preseason, and you could
tell that when they just marched up and down the field.
I do have my reservations on this Brown team, and
I've kind of flip flop when they made the trade
for Odell Beckham. I was all in saying, this is
(01:09:43):
so much talent on this team, they're going to challenge
for the Super Bowl. I've backed off a little bit.
I'm concerned about the amount of heights it's coming in
for a team that is extremely, extremely immature. They're immature
at head coach, and I mean it's not even you know,
personality why it's NFL years wise. Freddie Hitchens is in
his first year as head coach, so there's going to
(01:10:05):
be immaturity issues, like when he calls out guys publicly,
like when he goes out and really makes the strong
statement about the leaks and if anybody messes it up,
I'm gonna fire him. I thought that was unnecessary, Like
it had me wondering, oh are there leaks? Is this
a problem? But I thought that was an immature rookie
head coach move. You've got a second year quarterback who
already has struggles with maturity issues, learning how to deal
(01:10:28):
with media, learning how to deal with his stardom. You know,
he's still immature Odell Beckham, even though he is a
veteran in the league, he's still extremely immature with how
he deals with the media, how he handles controversy, how
he handles himself on the field. And now when you
trade away Duke Johnson, you've got just a second year
running back and Nick Chubbs who's going to carry the
(01:10:49):
workload As far as understand, you know, from the running
back position, it's an extremely immature team. Now, if everything
goes great, DEBI awesome, Like you know, if they can
play like they did last night, you won't hear a
peep out of anybody. There's a ball spread around. It's great,
But what happens, Doug when they lose two games in
a row or Baker Mayfield throws four picks or Odell
(01:11:11):
Beckham has zero receptions and only two targets. What happens
then is the big question mark for me. If they're
able to handle it, they'll be fine if they If
some of these personality quirks show up, then it could
be a disaster in the making. Danny Cannell joining us
from an NFL quarterback to CBS Sports dot Com is
where you can see is on the Bench show with
(01:11:31):
Rajah Bell on a daily basis. Off the bench, Sorry,
not on the bench, Off the bench, my bad dk um.
Last night, Eli struggles in his drive and suddenly Daniel Jones,
who no one wanted the Giants to draft, is he's
the messiah, right he is, Let's make a quarterback change. Now,
(01:11:51):
what do you how do you think the Giant should
handle this? So it's gonna funny, Doug, how things work.
I was gonna say it's the ebbs and flow of
media coverage, but it's so much more than that. It
is the peaks and valleys, it's the mountaintops in the desert.
They're no real in between. And that's really what you
saw unfolding last night. Like going into last night's game,
(01:12:13):
Giants fans booed Daniel Jones at a Yankees game before
he had even attempted a pass. Right, They're thinking we
made a massive mistake. We picked him in the sixth
overall pick. I can't believe we passed on Dwayne Haskins.
They're ready to throw in the towel. They're mocking him.
He's become the punching back for every joke. You know.
They have viral videos of him at practice missing a
(01:12:34):
throw and it's like, here's a glimpse of the giant future. Haha,
see a ghettleman like it just become the laughing stock
almost And Daniel Jones hadn't even attempted a pass, So
I felt bad for him, And then last night I
thought it was really a strong first impression which he
desperately needed to make for the Giants fan base which
has been so critical of this move. And I'm happy
(01:12:55):
for him from that standpoint. But again, you talk about
the mountaintops in the back allies. Here we are, all
of the sudden, already christening him ready to take over
a week one from Eli Manning Like, I love fans,
they're fanatics. They're help us make a living, or how
you make a paycheck as a player. But can we
get a little bit of reality and can we get
a little bit of a sense of the entire situation
(01:13:18):
instead of just the knee jerk reaction. It was just
the preseason. It was awesome. Good for him, But it's
not the end of the Eli Manning era just yet.
The Giants won't make that decision. Even if Eli looked
bad for two or three more preseason game. I still
think they're rolling out Eli Manning week one and probably
the majority of the season. Yeah, it's got to be
so obvious, right, it's just gotta be like he can't
(01:13:40):
play anymore before Daniel Jones gets a legit shot. Can
you know this? Dog? You know this more than anybody.
And it's the same in other sports, whether it's the
NBA preseason and whether it's spring training baseball or NFL preseason.
You are getting the most basic plays in the playbook
that you know like the back of your hand. Right,
you can say though they're very simple. The formations aren't
(01:14:02):
very complex, the route combinations aren't real complex. Your progression
is going to be really simple. You're gonna get it
out quick. Defensively, you're gonna probably see three different coverages
and they're not gonna blitz a ton and they're gonna
keep it base. You should look good, like you should
practice well well in a preseason game, like you have
to take everything with a grain of salt. And yet
(01:14:23):
that's not what people do. They want to you know,
Oh my gosh, the best performance ever. I was really
good in the preseason, Doug. I might have been Hall
of Famer if they would have kept my stats in
the preseason. That should give you an indication in itself
that it does not translate to an NFL successful career.
Tom Brady's forty two years old, and look, there are
times late in a year where he didn't look great,
(01:14:45):
and I'm just I'm just wondering, like I'm not going
Max Kellerman and saying off a cliff like he did
three years ago. But I'm also reasonable think he's a
human being. At some point there's going to be a decline,
and he and Drew Brees have kind of the same
contract where basically the free agents at the end of
the year. At what point should we expect to see
some sort of decline from the most successful and maybe
(01:15:07):
arguably greatest quarterback of all time? Man you would think
that it's got to be happening right now, right I mean,
you would think you've already seen it. I will say
there was a slight drop off last year, especially statistically
with Tom Brady when you look at some of his
career numbers, starting to see a little bit of it.
(01:15:29):
But the best part about it is, and he's not
putting up the obnoxious numbers that Patrick Mahomes is putting up,
or even Drew Brees. Drew Brees completing seventy four percent
of his passes is insane. But the thing is Brady
doesn't have to put up those numbers because of the
division they play in. The Afdeast might be the worst
division in the entire NFL, so they can kind of
(01:15:51):
go out there manage game. It wasn't pretty last year.
They didn't have a great December. Just give them a
seat at the table, a playoff all Bill Belichick and
Tom Brady want, And when they do that, then it's
anybody's game. Then you can rely on Tom Brady. You
only need to do it for three or four games
then you can rely on him. But as far as
the cliff, I don't think there's gonna be a Cliff.
(01:16:12):
I think Tom Brady is smart enough where if he
felt he was starting to drop off significantly, he would
hang it up. But I will say, this doesn't twenty
seem like a nice round number. Yeah, Like this is
his twentieth year, he got the one year extension, his
house is on the market. You know, it just feels
like that would be a great sendoff. And yet he's
(01:16:33):
done things that have astounded me the past five years,
past decade. So why it shouldn't surprise anybody if he
played until he's forty five, which he said he wants
to do. You and me, Risilo going to put in
and buy that place? Is it's something like forty three
million dollars or Sosilo just got a new deal, Like
we're gonna say, what if the split is Rastilo picks
up ninety percent, you and I get five percent each,
(01:16:55):
then we'll do it. Let's do it. I'm in hey
that your radio money is big, big, big, big, big bag,
big DK great stuff. Man. Look forward to seeing your show.
Thanks so much contributed ours appreciates being our guest in
the herd. Always have a great weekend, you two. That's
Danny Cannell, former NFL quarterback played for the Giants, the Falcons,
the Broncos. Off the bench with Raja Bell and CBS
(01:17:16):
Sports HQ between Ezekiel It's holdout and another suspension the
defensive side the ball? Are the Cowboys turning into a disaster?
I'll tell you why. I don't think so. Next, be
sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays and
noon Easter nine am Pacific. Doug Goliban for Colin. This
is The Herd. iHeartRadio, Fox Sports Radio and f S two.
(01:17:40):
Let's reading this article and I shared it on my show.
My show is the Doug Gotlieb Show. I know that
name's not great, right, what can I do? Anyway? It
follows this show three to six Eastern time, twelve to
three Pacific. You can it's actually on the same satellite
radio channel as the Dan Patrick Show. I don't know,
but maybe on maybe on the Fox one today because
(01:18:02):
there's no there's like a Junior NBA or something on
Fox Sports one today anyway, so you can listen to
on satellite radio as well. You can download the download
the All Ball podcast and the Herd Podcast Network, or
download my pod daily. Anyway, we talked about this article
it's it's five common mental errors that sway you from
making good decisions. And I saw this. This was number three,
(01:18:22):
and it was really good, and so stick with me
for a second. It's called the availability heuristic, refers to
common mistake that our brains make by assuming that the
examples which come to mind easily are also the most
important or prevalent things. For example, researched by Steve Pinker
at Harvard University has shown that we are currently living
in the least violent time in history. Least violent time
(01:18:45):
in history, more people living in peace than ever before.
The rates of homicide, rape, sexual salt, child abuse are
all falling. Most people are shocked when you heard that.
Were you surprised or you shocked by what you heard?
Some people refuse to believe them. If this is the
most peaceful time in history, why every time do I
(01:19:07):
turn the news, do I hear about all these terrible incidents?
The answer is, we're not only living in the most
peaceful time in history, but we're also living in the
most reported time in history. We overvalue and overestimate the
impact of things that we can remember, and undervalue and
underestimate the prevalence of events that we hear nothing about.
(01:19:30):
This is called the availability heuristic. Brings me to the
Dallas Cowboys. Man, it feels like the Dallas Cowboys are mess.
You got another Cowboys suspended god Zeke Elliott hold out,
god Amari Cooper wants contract, Dak Prescott wants a new contract.
Byron Jones needs new contract. Dale Smith needs a new contract.
(01:19:51):
Jerry Jones is in front of the media every day.
Stephen Jones having to clean up his dad's messes. Jason
Garrett on the hot seat, new offensive coordinator. Man, the
Cowboys are a mess or we in the media cover
the Cowboys more so than we cover any team, and
(01:20:15):
you as fans love hearing about the mess that is
the Cowboys. In news media, it's if it bleeds, it
leads right. In TV, you play with just like National,
just like FM radio, you play the hits. You like
the Cowboys. We cover the Cowboys more, We cover the
Cowboys more. You want more the Cowboys. There's a story,
(01:20:37):
it gets made bigger. I can tell you the Chargers
I think have better talent, have better talent than Dallas Cowboys.
The LA Chargers have better talent. They got two dynamic
rush ends, two Elvin Ingram, Joey Bosa. They have Derwin James,
(01:20:59):
one of the elite young players in the NFL. They
have Michael Williams to go along with Keenan Allen Hunter,
Henry as their tight end, and Philip Rivers. They have
a running back holding out. We have discussed it, but
not that much now. He's not as good as Zeke Elliott,
(01:21:20):
but it's a better football team. They won twelve games
last year. They tied for the best record in the AFC.
Beat the Baltimore Ravens on the road, lost obviously the
New England Patriots. Why is that, Well, Cowboys are more popular.
We cover the Cowboys more. The Texans don't even have
a GM, don't have a gentleman. The Texans won more
(01:21:42):
games than the Cowboys in the same state, in technically
a bigger market Houston, number four market in the country.
They won more games. They have a quarterback who's of
same age and yet is better, Like he's better than
Deak Prescott. No one really argues. Of course, he had
a terrible a cl injury in college than another one
here in the pros and one eleven games last season.
(01:22:02):
They just traded for Duke Johnson, who was the third
running back with the Browns. He didn't want to be there.
They didn't want him there, and maybe because they don't
have a general manager, they gave up a fourth which
will probably be a third for a running back who
you should have been able to get him for a
sixth or seventh. We don't talk about the Texans. They're
(01:22:23):
like a team that doesn't exist. They have New Hopkins,
one of the best wide receivers. Of course, they got
Captain America and JJ Watt. Heck, they have former number
one overall pick who they didn't haven't give a contract
extension too. Right, we cover the Cowboys the cowboys if
cowboys feel like it's mass chaos, and we cover them
(01:22:46):
that much because you want it and because you hear
it covered so much more often we overvalue and overestimate
the impact of things that we can remember, and undervalue
and underestimate the evalence of events that we hear nothing about.
There's a whole league out there. The Cowboys are just
one of thirty two. Tom Brady is on the decline,
(01:23:09):
and it's not a bad thing. I'll explain next in
the Herd. One more heard the Herd streams twenty four
hours a day, seven days a week. Within the iHeartRadio app,
Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd
like one up. Welcome in. This is the Herd. Whoever
you may be, and however you maybe making this part
(01:23:30):
of your day. Thanks so much. I'm Doug Gottlie, filling
in for Colin Calhard live from Los Angeles on Fox
Sports two, iHeart Radio app Box Sports Radio. Welcome in.
I hope you ready for a great weekend. Know there
was nothing wrong with your TV. You were watching professional
football on television last night and the team that is
(01:23:58):
defending champions again again. You know, it's there's a lot
of crazy things about Tom Brady, but the fact that
he's played long enough to compete in what is it
eight Super Bowls or there's a nine Super Bowls? I
have totally lost track. I know he's won six, lost
to the Giants twice, and who else they lose to
(01:24:20):
the lost of the Giants the Eagles, right, so they've
been nine. He's played in nine Super Bowls and he
went a decade without winning one. Crazier fun fun fact
is his best season where they won eighteen in a row,
going to lose to the Giants. He didn't play the
next year because the ACL injury. So I like, we
(01:24:41):
actually probably missed out on peaked tom Brady with his
best football team, another year with Randy Moss when they're
at there in their prime. That nuts to think about.
What's also nuts to think about is that Tom Brady
won't at some point in the future suffer decline. And look,
(01:25:04):
others have predicted it, and they've said, you know, was
it Max Kellerman who said he'll go off a cliff?
That was three years ago. I meant next year. I
meant next year. I mean, you don't know when the
cliff is coming, right, And this is one of those
optical illusions. And the NFL has they put in the
(01:25:25):
Tom Brady rule where you can't hit anybody below the knee, right,
and they they frankly have the rule now you can't
hit anybody about the neck, can't touch wide receivers beyond
five yards down the field. He's more protected than ever.
He takes care of himself better than ever. Hell, tom
Brady's hair looks better than ever. I have my suspicions,
(01:25:49):
all right, his teeth looked right like that dude, I'll
bet even smells good. But he's still forty two years old.
And unless you're taking a performance enhancer, and I don't
think he is, he's still forty two years old. So
as much as the NFL can elongate the runs of
Brady Breeze, Roethlisberger, Rivers, Eli, eventually father time catches up
(01:26:18):
and catches up in a hurry. It's like, all of
a sudden, you just can't play. You just can't get
out of bed the same in the morning. It's not
a gradual decline thing. It's not like baseball, where your stats.
You know, one year you're hitting three hundred, the next
year two ninety and two seventy five, then you know
thirty home runs and twenty home runs and fifteen home runs.
(01:26:39):
Like no, it's in most sports. It's basically all of
a sudden, you can't hit Jason Kidd in the playoffs,
could make a lamp, could make a lamp, and in
the NFL. I mean, the greatest example of that I
can remember is, do you guys remember when ray Lewis
came back for the Super Bowl where they beat the
forty nine Ers ray Lewis's last game in the NFL,
(01:27:02):
and they had that he was taking them. It's like
rhino tusk or something like that, dear antler spray, which
is a performance answer, and they didn't talk about it,
like on whatever. Ray Lewis used to be a guy
that you would game plan around going anywhere near all. Right,
let's let's figure out whereray is and let's go somewhere else,
(01:27:25):
right like that was generally the game plan. If you
watch the forty nine Ers come back after the power
went out in New Orleans, they went right at ray
Lewis because he couldn't play anymore. He's washed, couldn't run,
couldn't tackle, couldn't hit. He was it was over. Once
you can't run a linebacker in the NFL, it's over over.
(01:27:47):
And what change was they went from going They're like,
why are we going away from him? He can't play anymore,
Let's go right to him. Tom Brady in the playoffs
last season played two touchdown passes. Now, some of this
was at a necessity and game plan against the Chargers.
For example, they got the ball and first they took
(01:28:09):
the opening kickoff, march right down the field and a
power running game, and the Chargers could never really adjust.
And yes they went in and he threw the big
game winning touchdown pass against Kancy, brought him back against
Kan City Chiefs, and he had the game winning touchdown
pass against the La Rams like these things did in
fact happen, But he had three interceptions and it should
(01:28:33):
have been four. There would have been no Super Bowl,
there would have been no second touchdown pass. And Brady
has lost his favorite target, the ultimate mismatch in Rob Gronkowski, which,
just like the Tom Brady rule, can't hit a guy
below the knee, has elongated his career. Not having Gronk
will likely shorten his career. And that's okay. It's okay
(01:29:00):
to get old, but it happens really quickly, and if
you say no way, it happens quickly to Tom Brady.
How go is Brett Farve as a quarterback? Do you
guys remember Brett Farve's first year with the Minnesota Vikings?
And I remember that of the sporting events I've seen
in my lifetime, and I've been working in this business now,
(01:29:21):
this entering my sixteenth football season, sixteenth year covering national sports,
maybe the greatest regular season game win going into lions Den,
all the different storylines was Brett Farve is forever a Packer.
He never missed a start once he was starting for
(01:29:44):
the Packers, he won a Super Bowl, he won three MVPs.
Right and Farv had at toyed with retirement three consecutive years.
The third year, finally they moved on and went to
Aaron Rodgers named Aaron Rodgers starter only. Bret Farr was like, hey,
you know what, I really want to come back, and
they're like, sorry, we already gave we already gave it
(01:30:07):
to Brett Farve. It's like every guy's ultimate nightmare where
she says I'll always be here for you, you know,
and you're like, okay, I gotta go figure myself out.
You figure yourself out, and you come back and she's
moved on to another dude, right, and a younger dude
from northern California, good looking good at the time, Aaron
(01:30:28):
Rodgers had like that Jesus look going. So he goes
to New York and actually the Jets things started off,
they were like nine and three. Then he had an
like a bicep tear played through it and they were
stinking down the stretch. He goes to Minnesota Vikings his
first year, Brett Farve thirty three touchdown, seven receptions, sixty
(01:30:50):
eight percent completion percentage. Remember Brett Farve, He's known as
a gun slinger because he would force things into the
smallest openings possible. His win one of the greatest regular
season wins I can think of in the NFL Rember
he came in with the Minnesota Vikings and beat the
Packers in Lambeaux, Like damn. The fact is pretty good too.
(01:31:13):
So then he was going to retire, and remember Chili.
Chili went and sent a plane full of three dudes
down to pull him off retirement. And he came back
and he had this Nike hat that he was mowing
his grass with. You guys, remember this look. I mean,
he was the worst lug. It had probably smelled like
some mixture of gasoline, beer and fresh cut grass, which
(01:31:34):
is probably a pretty good aroma. Somebody should put that
thing together because while it may not tearn women on, Like,
if a guy slathers that thing on and walks into
a sports bar, other dudes will be like, hey, man,
can I buy you? But can I buy you a beer?
I don't know why I bought him beer. I bought
him wings all night. I just wanted to be around him.
Why what was it? Well, honey, you don't understand. He
smelled like gas, beer and fresh and fresh cut grass.
(01:31:58):
I mean that is that is a potpourri of magic.
Five came back and here's how bad his last season
was with the Vikings. Eleven touchdowns, nineteen interceptions, sixty percent
completion percentage. Oh oh bo wait the Metrodome literally not figuratively,
literally collapsed, and I'm scared that Tom Brady is going
(01:32:25):
to experience something that we in basketball know as the
run one more back syndrome. You're familiar with this, goula.
Are you a pickup basketball player? Ever? You ever play? There?
You go? Are you okay? Did you ever put when
you're in when you were growing up in Kenton, Connecticut,
same town I used to live in. Did you ever
play pickup basketball? Yes? I did Saturday mornings or at
(01:32:48):
night on the weeknights both, I would say. Okay. So
there's like a Saturday morning you can start playing like
seven or at eight. A bunch of old guys come in.
First game is brutal. Nobody can make a shot. Dude,
still stinking a beer and cigarettes the night before. You know,
havn't been playing, but by the second and third fourth
game and like gets to be pretty pretty good. Do
(01:33:08):
you get a little series going one team is better
than everybody else, the win and win and win and winning,
and then somebody makes a shot and that's game. And
guy's like, hey, I gotta go. Another guy's like, I
gotta go, I gotta go. And then you're looking around.
There's nine guys in the gym and one guy with
his shoes partially off, and some guy says, uh, you
(01:33:34):
guys want to run one more? You want to run
one more And the guy who's taking off his shoes like,
you know, I told my wife would be home at
like ten, it's like ninety. Ah, hell, sure, let's run
one more back. He always happens that last game. Somebody
(01:33:55):
always gets hurt, the game is usually terrible, and you
always regret running that one more back. Right, Tom Brady
is an unbelievable competitor. He is going to go down
as the most successful quarterback in the history of the sport.
Nobody's winning six Super Bowls just not happening. These are
(01:34:17):
things that will never happen again. But I fear that
by coming back and having this contract, which gives him
that magical twentieth year, and then he becomes a free agent.
He's selling his house. He loses Rob Gronkowski. Yes, last year,
(01:34:39):
they as they always did, ran through the AFC East
and they made this year. But remember the AFC East
is likely instead of having three rookie quarterbacks or two
rookie quarterbacks last year, now they're going to have three
second year quarterbacks. They're still the Patriots. They're still everybody's
biggest game. Everyone's gutting for them. He's a year older.
(01:35:00):
He probably truthfully thought, why don't I just leave at
the end of winning a Super Bowl, even if I
still have time left. Gazelle wants him home. He's supposed
to be home by now. All right, I'm gonna run
just one more back, mister Kraft, one more bill, one
just I'm gonna run this one back and then that's it.
(01:35:21):
Ad far As last year, payment won a Super Bowl
his last year, but he was benched for brock Osweller.
Nine touchdowns, seventeen inceptions. I don't know if it's this
year or when it is, but it sure feels like
it's coming soon. Because anyone who's ever run one back
(01:35:42):
knows what happens in that final game. Kyler Murray made
his NFL debut last night in his first preseason game.
I'll tell you why he's in great position to succeed
in the National Football League. I'm Doug Gottlieve. That's next
and the Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Herd weekdays in noon Easter nine a emphasis on
Fox Sports Radio FS one and the iHeart Radio. A
(01:36:04):
Doug gottlieban for Colin. This is the Herd, Fox Sports Radio,
iHeart Radio and f S two. Kyler Murray, number one
in your on your roster, number one on his jersey,
and the number one overall pick in the NFL draft.
We got a first chance to see him, and he
was really, really, really sharp. Six to seven forty four yards,
(01:36:26):
a lot of dinkin dung, not a ton of time
to throw, but look sharp, look good. You know, I
don't know what that offense is supposed to look like,
but that looked like a pretty good representation of moving
the ball, get rid of it quickly, showing his movement
in and out of the pocket, and showing his tremendous
arm strength and versatility. So very early returns are pretty good.
(01:36:51):
I don't know if he'll be great, because hell, Daniel
Jones was good last night, Josh Rosen was good last night.
Aker Mayfield was spectaculor like you know, just about everyone
was good last night except for Dwayne Haskins. And Dwayne
Haskins is the guy that Colin has said I like
(01:37:11):
him better than I like um Kyler Murray. So it's
not a being reactive to last night. It's more about hmm.
There's a book called Freakonomics. You guys familiar with freakonomics,
and the idea of freakonomics is, look, there's there's different
(01:37:32):
factors in every person's life, and with each positive factor
in your background, you're more likely to make more money,
be more successful, have a better life. Right, it doesn't
It's not just that doesn't necessarily come down to race.
It comes down to socio economic factors. Drew up in
(01:37:53):
a one parent home, two parent homes where those parents
college educated, they have bachelor's de gay, they have a
master's degree. What part of the country did you grow
up in? Do you have a house department? Now as
you go to public school or private school, do you smoke?
Do you drink. Right, If you don't smoke, you don't drink.
You come from a two parent home, both parents are
college educated, you're far more likely to go to college.
(01:38:16):
You go to college. And there's other debates this week
about the value of college. Sure, are there people did
Bill Gates drop out of Harvard? Yes, but it should
be pointed out that he got into Harvard. Right. It
is one thing to be a college dropout because you
couldn't handle the work or you couldn't get into college.
(01:38:40):
It's a whole other thing to be well, I was
in Mark Zuckerberg, I was at Harvard, and I dropped
out because I started Facebook, and now I'm one of
the ten richest people on the face of the earth. Like,
that's a little different than hey, I don't think I
need college. Right, there's a little difference there. I think
the same is true with quarterback play, right. I mean,
(01:39:04):
we talked about Daniel Jones, the likely Daniel Jones succeeds
as a as a first round draft pick quarterback, But
then you put him behind a quarterback who the relationship
is they both played for the same guy. You give
him a great young running back, you put him with
(01:39:27):
a general manager who believes in him because he drafted him.
He's going to play for them. And the coach has
developed quarterbacks and believes in him and draft him, and
they'll sit at him and take their time. Those all
help him, But those factors pale in comparison to what
Kyler Murray has going for him. Right. Just like not
smoking is a key factor in your level of education
(01:39:50):
and your level of success, the same is true for
style of play of the team that you go into.
Kyler Murray's walking into the air Raid system, same one
you use college. By the way, it's also the same
one that Cliff Kingsbury knows like the back of his
hand because he coaches as an offensive coordinator and he
played it as a player, and he played in the
(01:40:11):
Nation Football League, and he's young enough to relate to
his player, and his ship is forever tied to Kyler's
as his Steve Kind, their general managers forever tied to Kyler.
And he walked into a team that had David Johnson
and Christian Kirk and has he has He still has
(01:40:31):
Larry Fitzgerald, like, if anything, not having a great offensive
line that you can run behind, that you can depend on,
that you can line up that actually doesn't hurt. In
this in the context of the Arizona Cardinals, it doesn't
make it all bad because it doesn't get them far
afield from what they want to do, which is snap
(01:40:51):
it back there and get rid of it quickly, have
those wide splits and just give him a second to
throw or give him a second to move. I don't
know if it works because those same factors, the ones
going against him. Is like, he's five foot nine and
three quarters. Let's just be honest, he's tiny. He's also
(01:41:12):
a guy that, while he's agile in the pocket, he
runs around a lot. And there's generally no such thing
as an old running quarterback doesn't feel like a pocket
guy can't see over big offensive lineman, has to get
out of the pocket and likes to run, and when
you do, you get hit because you don't get faster
in the NFL, everybody else does. There's a lot of
(01:41:32):
stuff working against him. But if he's going to make it,
the ears of the Cardinals are the absolute perfect destination.
And that's what I saw last night. Let's get to
John Galay with the news. No, no, this is the
herd Line news. One of the big stories. Last night,
Doug was Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones putting on a
(01:41:54):
show against the Jets. He went five for five, sixty
seven yards and a touchdown. He may have played a
little longer, but a story came through and the game
was delayed. So it did look like end of days storm,
didn't it. It feels like it always happens this time
of year, and there we always get preseason games all
the light delays. Yeah, especially up you know in the Northeast.
It's it's northeast south south. Yeah, yeah, I mean first
(01:42:14):
weekend of college football, that first two weekends college football,
that's gonna be a problem. So obviously, now that he
played good for one drive in the preseason, there is
a huge quarterback controversy in New York. Just kidding. Their
head coach Pat Shermer was asked what he would say
to fans who think it's time for Jones to replace
Eli Manning. I think, slow your role. I mean, this
is just your first this is just his first go round,
(01:42:37):
you know, and I think he did a good job.
As I mentioned all along, He's done nothing to disappoint us.
And certainly when you take the you know, the team
down the field and score touchdown. It's good start, something
good to build on. And we got a lot of
time but before we start playing games, and nothing at
this point has changed. That's the least cool anyone has
(01:43:00):
ever sounded saying slow your role? How open should the job?
I think we all know Eli is going to start
the season. Yeah, how open should they be to replacing
Eli mid season or should it be more of a
Eli starts you finished the game once they're out of
playoff contention? I didn't like that last time, right to
keep his streak alive, but the streak is no, no, no, no, no,
(01:43:20):
he did not do it just to keep his streak
alive for you. Let's let's remember how this went down.
They offered him before they pulled him and started Gino Smith.
They said, hey, we know we want to keep the
streak alive. We want to pull you in the third
quarter to the fourth quarter, maybe the third quarter to
get the other two guys going. And he was like, nah,
you want to don't worry about that. You want to
sit me, sit me. Okay. They're like, okay, fine, you
(01:43:42):
benched Gino's in, so should they do that? Saying that
Sam approach or I don't think you have to make
up your mind what you're gonna do. Why do you
have to make up your mind and tell everybody where
starting or not starting Eli has been the main storyline
of this team for a couple of years. It's it's
not a simple solution. We I mean, I would say
it's a simple solution, but I think the I think
(01:44:03):
the answer will become obvious. That's really my take. I
think the answer will become obvious. You always have the
kid up and ready. He's not gonna be ready to
play for the first month and a half two months
of the season. And if you have an opportunity where
you're getting whipped to pull Eli Manning, go for it.
Go for it, do it and then go and did
you just come make sure you're prepared for the press
conference at we're good. Look, Eli's our starter. But in
(01:44:24):
this particular case, like we're down thirty to ten, if
we wanted to get the kid, I'm getting some live reps.
Maybe announce it. So if you are going to make
a full time change, fans gonna have a Okay, this
is the Eli's last start at home? Whatever I don't know,
I think you just gotta figure it out. You know,
you don't have to this. This goes a little bit
in line with I hate to do. This is gonna
(01:44:44):
ruin some people's day to go along with the president, right,
The President's like, why don't have to tell everybody what
we're gonna do before we do it? Right? In terms
of wars, Now, why don't we have to tell you
what we're going We don't. We know, we're all communicating
and by the way things change. You probably went into
last night going like, hey, you know, well, anybody played
better than we thought. And the things we don't always catch.
If a guy made the right read, made the right throw,
(01:45:06):
sometimes the defense plays a part. Remember he's going against
twos and threes. But I just have a plan in
place in case you play him late in the game.
Have open conversation with Eli Manning. It's gonna be obvious
at some point in the year that if you're going
to make a move, and if you're not, if it's
not obvious, then they'll make a move. You're fine. The
Chief's head coach Andy Reid said yesterday that a reigning
(01:45:27):
NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes will play the entire first quarter
of the Chiefs first preseason game tomorrow night. Obviously, that's
not the way most teams operate. Most starters don't play
unless they're really young, and if they do, it's one
series and they pull you out. Is this kind of
too big of a risk to play Mahomes for the
(01:45:49):
entire first quarter in preseason game one? Again? I don't.
I don't understand the hole this is. We're announcing what
we want to do before we do it. You're allowed
to do whatever the heck you want to do. Sure,
we don't know if they're gonna get the ball once
twice three times in the first quarter. One quarter is
not really a measurement of of plays, right, It's that
could be one play or it could be twenty. Like,
(01:46:09):
you don't, you don't know. I mean, it depends how
the game goes. I'm just the thing. The first thing
that stood out to me was what is he going
to gain from that? Probably not. It's not like he's
I get that, But the risk is all your season's over. Okay,
here's a question, Like we we've alread. The only quarterback
I can remember getting hurt in a preseason game from
(01:46:32):
getting hit was Tony Romo. Romo's last year with the Cowboys.
He played. I'm gonna say it was almost like one
snap he got yeah, he got crunched. He we just
got tackled. But it was just weird and he he
broke that not his back, but there's like a little
bone that attaches to the get what it's called, the
same thing that Carson Wentz had last year. Well, but
I mean we saw a quarterback, not a start transverse fracture.
(01:46:55):
We saw the Eagles backup quarterback last night broke his wrists. Yes,
I mean it doesn't It doesn't mean it has It's football.
You can get hit wrong and you can break something real,
not a big deal. But this is this is the
team that expects to win the Super Bowl. I'm just
surprised that it's the same head coach, it's the same weapons.
It's I would get I would guess he's just gonna
(01:47:17):
get rid of it quickly, and they want to they
why not do it early rather than do it late,
Like play him a quarter, then play him a half
and maybe then maybe shut him down. I don't know,
I don't know what they're playing is, but a quarter
does not actually sound like that much. It only feels
like that much because other guys only played a series
and that's John guilt with the news. Well, that's the news,
(01:47:37):
and thanks for stopping by the Herdline News. Let's go
to the Herd Satellite network as Ben Volan joins us
from the Boston Globe, NFL senior writer, and Ben, I
want to ask you this, are the Patriots ready at
the end of the year to move on from Tom Brady?
Look at the structure of this contract. His house is
(01:47:58):
up for sale twenties year in the end in the NFL.
Are they preparing themselves to move on from Tom Brady?
I mean the pieces are starting to add up that
way a little bit, no question. He also signed with
the William Morris Agency, like an off field entertainment representation company,
last week. So yeah, I think both sides are pretty
(01:48:21):
clearly at least not committing for next year. It's definitely
still on the table, But the Patriots aren't saddling themselves
with any sort of contract down the line, and I
think they want to see how he looked at forty
two before they want to commit to anything to forty three.
So yeah, I think the Patriots and Tom Brady are
(01:48:42):
just not necessarily preparing for you know, it's all end
after this year, but at least getting ready for the
possibility of it's fascinating. Um. Okay, so you lose Rob Gronkowski,
who is his kind of ultimate outlet, right Julian Edelman
has been out with the broken thumb. What does he
exactly have to work with outside of when healthy and
(01:49:04):
outstanding running game? Well, you hope that Edelman and the
hope is that Edelman will be back for the regular season.
So he's definitely the engine of the offense right now
on board. They need him. Nikhil Harry, the first round pick.
He looked pretty good last night. Usually got a big
body make a couple of contested catches. Now, he did
get a little banged up and he left the game,
but he was on the sideline last night, So I
(01:49:25):
don't think it's gonna be anything serious. He's gonna be
the new big, physical receiving threat that can replace Gronk,
you know, some of the power that they have in
that passing game. So you hope that Nikil Harry can
make it through training camp healthy and then can have
a nice productive regular, you know, rookie season. The running
backs are Really, that's kind of what the Patriots passing
game of all ground. James White catching eighty five ninety
(01:49:48):
balls out of the backfield. Rex Burkhead can catch the
ball out of the backfield or the spot you're bringing
back Sony Michelle, you brought in Damian Harris. Really, it's
it's all about the running backs right now, because they
didn't really go out and replace Rob Gronkowski. They're other
than Edelman. It's a bunch of question marks at wide receiver.
So yes, you know, it's definitely still a work in
(01:50:09):
progress for Brady and his weapons right now, and it's
probably gonna be another year where they struggle and they
look and consistent that first month of the season before
they really start to figure out their personnel. Right, they
getting division play and they remember that they're better than
all the teams in their division who have all kinds
of other issues to catch up on. Explain to me
the extension, right, like, why why was it structured in
(01:50:31):
the way it was structured. Yeah, it's kind of weird,
Like the Patriots usually don't do dummy contracts like that.
They did the void years. You know, it's a salary
cap trick and help them create basis year. I think
when it sends those they're pretty adamant about not giving
Brady an actual extension because if this thing void in March,
they're going to take a thirteen and a half million
(01:50:53):
dollar cap hit next year, no matter what, even if
he comes back and plays, you got to add that
thirteen and a half million onto whatever contract design. So
I think the fact that they were willing to do
that shows that there maybe weren't. They really didn't want
to do an extension, and I think from Brady's side
of it, he actually got some control of the situation.
I think this year it was stressing him out a
(01:51:13):
little bit that here we are, we got the August
and they still hadn't read on his contract, and I
think he's getting a little anxious about the whole situation. Well,
now it comes to a head of March. Now the
void day is March seventeenth, and that's when that big
stalary cap charge hits and Brady can't be franchise tacks.
So that gives him a little bit more control of
the situation. And now he doesn't have to wait around
the next August. We should have some clarity about it.
(01:51:35):
Hopefully in March. The Patriots can always resign him afterwards.
They can redo the deal before March seventeenth. So my
thought is they're gonna just do this now and then
they'll figure it out after the season. Next February and March,
they'll figure out Tom you know, if Brady's going to
come back, and what his contract will be. But Brady
at least took a little bit of control of the
situation and now can the timing works out better in
his favor. Ben Volland joining us from the Boston Globe.
(01:51:57):
Doug Gallivan for calling this is the hurd, is Jared
him the new Jimmy Garoppolo. I'm not ready to go
that far yet. Belichick loved him from Jimmy Garoppolo, and
it really painted to trade it away. However, Stidham looked
pretty good last night. I was. I was definitely impressed
with his poise, his ability to hang in the pocket,
go through his reads. You'd like to see young quarterbacks
(01:52:19):
throwing confidently over the middle, not just consistently settling for
check down throwing space grows to the spideline. He was
letting a riff and throwing some some tight window throws.
I know it's the Lions. I know it's their twos
and their threes, so let's not go too crazy. But
he actually looked pretty poise last night. I was impressed.
And you know, then, to me, that comes down to, well,
you really need to keep Brian Hoyer as well. And
(01:52:40):
so to me, if the better that Stidham plays, even
if Payer plays great, you should they should try to
trade him to someone. Maybe I look at the Arizona Cardinals.
They have not a whole lot behind Kyler Murray, and
that's a guy to be worried about his durability this year.
It's his rookie season. So I'd call it the Arizona
Cardinals and see if they have a use for a
good veteran quarterback like Brian Hoyer to be the backup.
Then you cover the entire NFL. I'm wondering if if
(01:53:02):
you're hearing that the Raiders are are frustrated with Antonio
Brown because they're just trying to determine how good Derek
Carr is. Well, they're definitely not getting the the reps
and the continuity. And I can guarantee John Gruten doesn't
like having his best receiver an offensive player not on
the field, especially when they just gave him two years
and almost thirty two million dollars guaranteed. Uh, you know,
(01:53:24):
showing up to camp on a hot air bal learning
he's not practicing if he's you know, burning his feet
in a cryogenic chamber or whatever is going on there,
so he can't be thrilled. I don't know. It kind
of sounds like Antonio Brown's playing his old tricks and
you know, doing Vetteran tricks to get out of the
early part of training camp and you know, the preseason.
And I still think he'll be there when it counts,
(01:53:45):
and he'll get in some reps with Derek Carr in
the final couple of weeks this season. But yeah, I mean,
it's never good to be sitting sitting out practice, and
I can't imagine John Guten's too happy about it. I
just I hope we get to see some of them
on a hard knocks this week and that they don't
you know, gloss over at this time. Yeah, we didn't
really see any boardroom stuff like we do normally. You
have the boardroom conversation between general manager and head coach
(01:54:08):
or gentle manager and all the coaching staff and they
start to go through guys they like and don't like.
We didn't see that last week. I do wonder if
we see that that this week. Ben Bowland, Boston Globe,
senior NFL writer fall him on Twitter readers work in
the Globe. Ben, great stuff, Thanks so much for your insight.
All right, thanks buddy. Yeah, it's one of those things
where we shouldn't be surprised if Antonio Brown shows up
(01:54:31):
in a hot air balloon. I do think in the
terms of wasteful expenses, like you spend how much on
what like you could have just gotten in a car
and had somebody uber and drop you off. You did
a hot air balloon, Like that's the one of the
weirdest deals. Now, it looked cool. Hot air balloon. Also,
it seems like one of those things that it is
good from a far but far from good, like Mann
(01:54:53):
looks really cool. You get up there, you go way up,
like okay, we're up, time to go down. Otherwise you
just I'm uncomfortable. Maybe and maybe it's romantic. You're with
some of you love, You care about your wine. You
know you're having glass of wine. You're in Napa. Although
there's always the person who's so it's not like you
(01:55:13):
can make out and really enjoy the experience. And I
was like, okay, can you, ma'am, can you I know
you're just directing the balloon, but can you turn your
head away so you can't see us make it out?
She's not really a PDA person. But we shouldn't be
surprised that. This is why it's one thing to trade
for Antonio Brown. Something to trade for Antonio Brown and
(01:55:35):
give him a huge contract. And I think they got
him at a relative discount comparison to Michael Johnson Michael Thomas,
Sorry Michael Thomas, relative discount. I'd like Antonio Brown on
the field better than like Michael Thomas. He's a game
breaking wide receiver, tough, you know, can make plays in traffic.
You can't double him. He's he's too fast for bigger
(01:55:57):
dbs and too strong for guys his size. He's a
ridiculous worker. But I mean, if your reward bad behavior
with a new contract, what do you think you're gonna get?
And it hasn't been bad behavior, it's just I mean,
hot air balloon and burning your feet in a cry
of chamber. You know you frost bite your feet. That's
(01:56:20):
a new one that is a new one that's more
bizarre than dog ate my homework, and this case the
dog actually did eat his homework. I'm gonna give you
five things you think you learned last night from the
NFL preseason, but you didn't. It's in the Best for Last.
It's next in the Herd. Be sure to catch live
editions of the Herd week dayson noon Easter not a
(01:56:41):
Empacific Doug gottlieb in for Colin. This is the Herd.
Wherever you may be, however you be making it must
get maybe making us part of your day. Hope you
have a great, great weekend yellow football on a Thursdy night,
you probably feel better about yourself, like yes, yes I do, Yes,
I do. Some kids head back to school next week.
(01:57:02):
It does. It comes out of that fast. I'm already
back in school. Others still on vacation, like my kids
are good life, but football is back, which gave us
a great idea for the Best for Last. It's almost
the end of the show, but that doesn't mean we're
phoning it in. Nope, we grind to the very last segment.
It's time for Best for Last. There were eleven preseason
(01:57:26):
games last night, which led to overreaction Friday. Right, you've
tuned into your local sports guy sports gal sports talk
station RACK one hundred, home of the Patriots. Right, so
we thought we'd say for you the best for last
the five biggest football overreactions of the first major night
(01:57:50):
of preseason football. You're ready, here we go. The Broncos
are gonna regret given up on Paxton Lynch. That's because
Paxton Lynch was eleven for fifteen hundred nine yards one
hundred and fifteen point seven pass rating, also four rushes
thirty eight yards. He didn't actually play last year at all.
This is a former first round pick. He was given
(01:58:12):
the keys to the kingdom in Denver after Peyton had
what was gone and he couldn't take advantage of that
great defense. Trust me, there is no quarterback conference in
Seattle because they know Paxson Lynch is not really a
starting quarterback. He just had a nice little night. Lamar
(01:58:33):
Jackson is a pocket passer. This could be part of
the massive overreaction Friday. Lamar Jackson went four for six
fifty nine yards one touchdown. Should be pointed out that
his best completion of the night, which is right before
the touchdown, it looked like he was throwing it to
his tight end and the wide receiver actually made an
(01:58:54):
unbullied right there, but an unbelievable catch. It was like
to one of two guys and to nobody, but the
wide receiver made an unbelievable catch. He didn't have one
rushing attempt. Do you really think the Ravens are not
gonna want Lamar Jackson to run the football? They have
said they are going to have him run the football.
Last year, he didn't have one game more than two
(01:59:15):
hundred five yards passing, and they beat up on the
worst defenses in the NFL, the Bengals twice. They were
terrible from the bad defenses in the NFL, and he
averaged seventeen rushes the game, and they think that'll go
up this year. He's not an efficient pocket passer. He's
been below and he will remain such. All right. Here's
one Daniel Jones will make the Giants forget about Eli
(01:59:36):
Manning's five for five sixty seven yards touchdown, one hundred
and fifty eight point three passer rating. That's perfect. Eli
was one for one three yards, booed after going three
and out. Of course, Pat Tchermer shut down the quarterback controversy,
and Daniel Jones by Chris Carter's estimation, actually made the
wrong read on his touchdown throw, and eventually one final server,
(02:00:00):
Pat Shermer shut it down, said there is no quarterback controversy.
Slow your Role. I believe they're gonna be T shirts
with slogan saying slow your Role, New York Jackets. Here's
a hot take Friday right, The Patriots have found Tom
Brady's replacement in Jared Stidham. Stidham, of course, played at Baylor,
(02:00:22):
then played at Auburn. Fourteen of twenty four, one hundred
and seventy nine yards, one touchdown, ninety five point seven
passer rating. Who needs that guy in his great hair?
We have the Air Apparent and Jared Stidham against the
Detroit Lions. Okay, look, Tom Brady is six times Super
(02:00:43):
Bowl champion. He is officially effectively on a one year contract,
and they're gonna try and develop Jared Stidham. But he
went in the fourth round. Does Tom Brady love him
getting all his raps? Probably not with the idea that
he's going to replace Rady next year, who seems like
a major, major reach Stidham was highly touted and of
(02:01:06):
course left when there was a coaching change at Baylor.
I think he'd already been beating out, but I don't
see him being the heir apparent at this point in time.
And here's the last one. I stayed away from it.
And it's hard because it's so much fun and he's
so talented and he's the number one pick. Kyler Murray
is the next Pat Mahomes. Charger didn't have Joey Boser,
(02:01:28):
Melvin Ingram. He completed six out of seven passes for
forty four yards. He played on one drive with no
game plan for the game, with no game plan for
stopping the air raid offense, with no book on Kyler Murray,
the Charger just kind of winged it and he danked
and dunked and looked really good doing it. Got a
(02:01:50):
chance to be a hell of a player. But the
idea that he's the next Pat Mahomes because you saw
him throw for forty four yards in on one drive
against the stripped down version of a dynamic defense, I'm
not buying as it yet, and that's our best relives now.
I did not include a photo that I showed the
crew this morning, which I guess I forgot to send
(02:02:12):
to you guys. That was my winter formal I think
it's winter formal photo from when I was in high
school and I was essentially a gap model, and it
was the it was the front of the store gap sweater.
It's big, big V neck, multi colored music. You asked
(02:02:33):
their white pants, they were not They're just a light
soft khaki Chino front. Definitely with pleets. I high school
was the Plete era, a lot of pleats. College was
frankly the Plete era as well. When you get the
flat front till what a decade ago? Flat front came
back in decade ago. So there are there are photos
(02:02:53):
out there. I'll throw that one up there on a
on a TBT. You know. The one thing about the
NFL and the preseason is kind of like preseasons like
movie trailers, isn't it. You almost feel like if you
set the Browns to like a movie trailer like Top
Gun in a world where Baker Mayfield has been told no,
(02:03:17):
Cleveland says yes right. Think about it for a second,
average run time an event NFL game is how long?
Three hours? Right? Average run time of a drive or
a quarter you know, it's like sometimes they're the longer preview,
sometimes they're the shorter. They end up you're on the
(02:03:39):
field about five minutes. Hey, well the previews are what
fifteen minutes for a movie, but each individual preview is
I don't know, ninety seconds long. That's what preseason is.
It's the trailers and you're watching. You're like, I'll go
see that. No chance, I'm not too much cgi. I
(02:03:59):
have not seen that, know, No chance. No, oh she's
in that. No, I'm not an endurable like you might be.
She's your favorite actress, right, hun sweetie, Yeah, No, she's
okay looking she's okay. That's kind of what it feels like.
They're like, Oh, I don't know that Giant's coming out
with another movie. I get this new kid I heard
he's is that bad? Oh my god, wife, I got
(02:04:21):
sa Quan. All right, I'll go see it, you know,
I'll go see it's a body cop movie. It's another
rock movie. Okay, I'll go see it. Is it gonna
be the greatest thing ever? No is gonna be jumani? No.
Preseason football is just like the previews when you go
(02:04:41):
to the movies. What's it? The exact same thing. It
gets you, And it doesn't always mean that you're gonna
go and watch that movie in theaters. You don't not
gonna wait till I see that one at home. I'm
not gonna go to if it makes you want to
go to a game that's like making you want to
go to the theater, I'll wait till it comes out
on Netflix or Amazon Prime. Right, that's like I'll just
(02:05:01):
watch them on the dish. I'll just watch them on
Red Zone. I can't wait to see them. And last
night he kind of got in on The Browns. The
Browns seemed like a movie you'd want to watch. He
kind of probably a little bit in on the Arizona Cardinals,
even though he never thought you'd circle an Arizona Cardino game,
because you want to see how this plays out. And
(02:05:25):
then you're like, Josh Rosen is not as terrible, but
he's running around for his life. That movie may be
so bad that I want to see it. And sometimes
the trailers have all the best stuff, all right, Paxton
Lynch feels like the trailer for the Comedy where every
funny line that's in the movie was in the trailer.
(02:05:51):
Because we've seen Paxston Lynch's movie and we know how
it usually ends, all right. My thanks to John Guillay,
Sammy and of course my man RYE Music. The entire
crew here have a great weekend. Collins Back Monday. I'm
Doug Gotlieb. This is the Herd. One more Herd. The
Herd streams twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
