Just as it was teased, Kim Kardashian West met with President Donald Trump as well as other officials like senior advisor Jared Kushner on Wednesday afternoon (May 30) to discuss prison reform and, more particularly, request a pardon for Alice Marie Johnson, 62-year-old great-grandmother serving a life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense.
"Great meeting with @KimKardashian today, talked about prison reform and sentencing," the President tweeted after the afternoon meeting. He also posted a photo of the pair in the Oval Office, which has gone on to receive more than 118,000 likes.
While VIP guests are usually required to walk through a gate to board their vehicles, Kardashian West departed in a black Chevrolet SUV parked inside White House grounds about an hour after her arrival. "I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon. It is our hope that the President will grant clemency to Ms. Alice Marie Johnson who is serving a life sentence for a first-time, non-violent drug offense," Kardashian West said in a statement on Wednesday night. "We are optimistic about Ms. Johnson's future and hopeful that she -- and so many like her -- will get a second chance at life." According to an administration official, the White House is currently reviewing Ms. Johnson's case.
In case you need to get caught up, Johnson became involved with people selling drugs out of desperation after she lost her job and was unable to pay her bills. It led to a 1993 arrest, where she was accused of participating in a drug trafficking and money-laundering operation that distributed cocaine. Even though she never made drug deals, she did communicate messages and assisted in the process by letting people use her phone. "I felt like a failure," Johnson wrote in an October op-ed. "I went into a complete panic and out of desperation, I made one of the worst decisions of my life to make some quick money. I became involved in a drug conspiracy."
