Halsey's latest performance ruffled a few feathers this week — and now she's speaking out.
The singer-songwriter appeared on the finale of The Voice Tuesday night (December 18), where she put on a colorfully artistic interpretation of her newest single "Without Me" alongside contestant Jade Chynoweth. Throughout their exhibition, Chynoweth and Halsey engaged in a queer-centric dance number that some viewers deemed inappropriate for a family-friendly show.
"This season of The Voice will be the last for me. This performance was a new low for a ‘family’ show," one user tweeted of the production. Another wrote, "VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE VOICE FOR SHOW CASING SUCH VULGARITIES, AFTER SINGING HOLY NIGHT!!"
Many others, like this user, even accused the star of lip-syncing during her set. "Say what you want about The Voice, but it seems like a weird choice for Halsey to show up and lip sync when the artists worked their asses off for the finale."
Quick to answer her detractors, the "Colors" countered with a show of pride.
“Very proud of the emotional performance i did with @JadeChynoweth on @NBCTheVoice tonight," she tweeted. "And also very proud to have pissed off thw [sic] homophobic viewers at home who missed the message. Thanks for watching."
“Represention [sic] matters. Thanks @NBCTheVoice for giving a space for this vision to come to life," she continued. "And thank you @JadeChynoweth for being an incredible human who used her body like the ultimate instrument for this collaboration.”
The artist later went on to laugh off those lip-syncing claims, writing, "I’m not even sure these programs would allow a singer to do it if they begged to cause they’d be scared of tech difficulties compromising the show’s integrity. Like I feel so dumb even having to address this lmao.”
