In the words of my mama, Lil Nas X "plays too much."
On Tuesday (April 9), the chart-topping rapper, who's currently got the #1 song in the U.S., "Old Town Road" remix with Billy Ray Cyrus, started quite the social media-fueled rumor when he hinted that he's working on new music with the one, the only, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter.
The tweet that started it all off was pretty simple — "ready to tell them @beyonce 😏🤨🙈🙈!?," Lil Nas X wrote — but it was just enough to get the Internet talking. "WE NOT READY FOR THIS," one Twitter user excitedly replied. While a second wrote, "don't play with me."
However, after Nas X's tweet started getting picked up by publications everywhere, he was forced to confess that his tweet was nothing more than a joke. "i was trolling sorry," he wrote in response to an article with the headline: "Lil Nas X hints Beyonce Could Be On 'Old Town Road' Remix."
As fans know, it's been a crazy few weeks for the 20-year-old country-trap rapper. After having his song "Old Town Road" pulled off the country charts for not being country enough, Lil Nas X returned to the top of the charts with a killer country remix, thanks to the help of Billy Ray Cyrus, which catapulted the track to #1 on the Hot 100 chart.
"It was so obvious to me after hearing the song just one time. I was thinking, what’s not country about it?" Billy Ray tweeted in response to the song being pulled off Country charts. "What’s the rudimentary element of a country and western song? Then I thought, it’s honest, humble, and has an infectious hook, and a banjo. What the hell more do ya need?"
"A few days passed and I went to the studio to do vocals," he continued. "When I finished the pass, I whistled at the end of the song. Thats when the engineer stood up and said, “that sh*t is fire” We’re keeping that! Glad you gusys are diggin’ the tune, love seeing all your meme’s.... #OTR."
