A New Hampshire man got a nasty surprise while he was watching the news on his iPad. 86-year-old Roy Syvertson went to close the cover on his iPad when he realized that a bat had managed to get trapped in the back of the case.
"I looked, and there was the bat looking out at me, and I could see his wings had the little hooks on them," Syverston told NBC Boston. "It must have been very squished in there."
The bat bit Syvertson on his finger as he tried to keep it from escaping into his home.
"I kept squeezing it so he wouldn't come out, because, as you see, we got a high ceiling in here," he said.
He managed to get the bat outside and set it free. A few hours later he found the bat had died and called the New Hampshire Department of Fish and Game. Officials tested the bat for rabies, and when it came back positive, Syvertson went to the hospital for treatment.
While he never showed symptoms of rabies, he told the news station he was worried about getting sick. Now, Syvertson is extra cautious when he opens things around his home.
"When I open up the Manchester Union Leader to read now I'm very careful when I open it up," he said. "When I open up the refrigerator I want to make sure there's nothing in the refrigerator, cereal box... what could be lurking in there? So maybe I am getting paranoid, I don't know."
