Director’s Cut: Hunter Hayes ‘One Good Reason’ Music Video

Hunter Hayes is giving us all the good reasons to be hooked by his new track.

On June 14th, Hunter delivered an emotional ballad titled, “One Good Reason.” Now we have an official video (see below)! The track comes as Hunter’s second release off his up-and-coming project and speaks into the sensitive response that occurs when a relationship ends, and no one is to blame.

CMT Radio’s Cody Alan had the unique opportunity to sit down with Hunter and his video director, Brenton Giesey to get a peek behind the curtain.

Here are 5 answers to Cody’s 5 questions for the director:

Cody: You’ve worked with HH on several projects. Does having that relationship make the process easier for you or to you feel like you have to raise the bar?

Brenton: Having that relationship makes things so much easier! Every part of our creative process is aided by that- from brainstorming to shooting and editing the process is so fluid and collaborative. Things come together so easily and we know how the other thinks. It’s so much fun.

Cody: As your first official music video, what is one take away or one thing you learned from the experience that you will carry with you into the next project?

Brenton: This project reinforced my belief that you don’t need a massive production or budget to make something of value and that speaks to people. We put meaning and intentionality into everything we do, and I think that translates.

Cody: What were your thoughts when you initially heard this track? Did you immediately have a vision for this video treatment?

Brenton: When I first heard the song I knew it had to be shot in slow motion and in very cinematic settings. I also had a vision for action happening in reverse, which ended up being the storyline. Luckily, we were on tour out on the west coast and had some time to film in gorgeous locations.

Cody: In my experience, working with Hunter is always a good time. What’s your favorite “Hunter-ism” or thing you look forward to when working with together?

Brenton: With Hunter, he loves making things casual and fun for everyone involved. I look forward to all the memories we make on big projects. We love involving as many of our friends in our projects as we can and we love reminiscing about all the fun we had making art- the “One Shot” vertical video, for example, was so much fun because we took a dozen of our friends down to 2nd Ave and filmed a music video “throw and go” style. Our bar tab that night was more than the budget of the video.

Cody: If this video was ever re-envisioned into a pop-up video, what are a few fun facts that you would hope would be included?

Brenton: Well, since Hunter and I are very intentional artists, we wanted to Easter egg a lot of little moments. We actually went back and filmed some scenes in the same locations as some of our previous videos and intentionally used wardrobe that Hunter has worn before, in an effort to make this feel as real as we could. There are also some secret things hidden in there too that I can’t quite talk about yet...
