Denver Teacher Delivers Baby on Sidewalk Outside Her Middle School

A teacher in Denver who wasn't supposed to deliver her baby until later this month found herself going into labor right outside her school last week, according to multiple reports.

Lindsay Agbalokwu teaches sixth-grade English at a middle school for the Denver Public Schools district and tells KMGH that her child wasn't due until Sept. 17. Even though she'd felt a possible contraction earlier that morning, she agreed to go to the school last week to present an award during a morning school assembly.

That's when she began feeling "so much pressure" and the middle school teacher realized she needed to get to a hospital as soon as possible.

"Then all of a sudden, it was just so much pressure and pain, I was like, 'I think she's coming now! I think we need to just call 911,'" Agbalokwu told KMGH.

Her friend, Marissa Kast, who teaches 7th grade reading, put down a sleeping bag on the sidewalk, while principal Natalie Lewis and Dean Chris Earls, got ready to help deliver the baby. Fortunately, firefighters arrived in time to help finish the delivery after only a few pushes while she was on the sidewalk outside her school.

"I just like randomly think about it and text my mom, 'I just gave birth on the sidewalk outside my school!' This is so crazy!" she said with a smile.

The baby and mother are doing just fine, with Zara weighing in at eight pounds, six ounces.

"When she was ready, she just said, 'Boom. I'm coming out,'" said Agbalokwu. "I think it will be indicative of her personality to come. That she will be a firecracker. She's going to do great things."
