Back in 2012, reports surfaced that Nick Lachey and Vanessa Lachey sent Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson cookies after they welcomed their daughter Maxwell into the world. Seven years later, Simpson published her memoir Open Book in which she discusser her marriage and divorce from Nick. In a recent interview to promote the memoir, Jessica said she's on great terms with Nick and Vanessa. She even mentioned the "beautiful" gift the couple sent her after she gave birth.
During an appearance on Today with Hoda and Jenna after the book was released, Hoda asked Nick and Vanessa about the gift they sent Jessica. Vanessa's answer was pretty awkward and the moment went super viral. After Hoda brought Jessica tell her she was "grateful" for the generous gift, Nick tried to brush it off but Vanessa jumped in with some questions of her own. “I feel bad. I’m sorry, but you said somebody sent her … It wasn’t us,” Vanessa said. “I don’t know her address. But thank you, whoever sent it from us!”
When the clip of the awkward moment went viral, people started speculating Nick sent his ex-wife the gift without telling Vanessa. The theory started to spread online and Vanessa ended up responding to a bunch of people tweeting about the interview. One Twitter accused her of throwing shade at Jessica and Vanessa replied: “Sorry you think that, just didn’t want to take credit for something we didn’t do. That’s all. Seems weird to ignore sending a big beautiful gift basket and taking that credit."
In another tweet, Vanessa wrote that the couple “just wanted to clear the air.” She added that if she "sent something, I'd take credit!" In a third reply, Vanessa criticized Hoda for asking the question in the first place. “You make sure you do your research and state facts and ask appropriate questions as the host… don’t you think" Vanessa wrote. "The statement wasn’t true, so I was simply clearing that up. But definitely a beautiful sentiment if it was.”
Who sent Jessica the "beautiful" gift if not Nick and Vanessa? We may never know.
