Is It Safe To Order Delivery Or Takeout During the Coronavirus Outbreak?

Ever since the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, began rapidly spreading across the United States, several states and cities have taken drastic steps to try and curb the outbreak, including ordering that all bars and restaurants to shut down except for takeout and delivery.

With long lines at grocery stores, many people have been turning to delivery or takeout for their meals. However, some have wondered - is ordering delivery or takeout safe?

While there is no evidence that food being associated with the virus's transmission, there are some simple steps and precautions you can take to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Avoid Meeting the Delivery Driver in Person: Many food delivery apps now offer a 'contactless' delivery, which allows you to designate where the food should be left. If you're foregoing the app, you can always leave instructions for the delivery person on where they should leave the food (in the lobby, at your doorstep or somewhere more convenient).

Throw Away the Packaging: The virus could have come into contact with another surface that had the virus on it. Your best bet is to immediately discard the packaging as soon as you bring it inside and wash your hands directly after handling it. You should probably avoid using the food containers your meal is stored in. If you're living the freewheeling bachelor lifestyle, now is the time to pick up a set of dishes and silverware.

Tip Well: Right now, delivery drivers are literally risking their health to bring you a burrito. It's worth giving them an extra few bucks if you can - especially as the economy continues to falter amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Order Direct From the Restaurant: Some apps have temporarily suspended collection of commission fees for orders, however, ordering directly from the restaurant ensures all the money you're spending will go directly to support your favorite restaurants.

Avoid Peak Hours: Avoiding crowds is the hottest trend in restaurants right now and it's one you should participate in. The fewer people you come into contact with amid the pandemic, the better. If you're picking up a to-go order from a restaurant that doesn't have delivery,

Don't Do Pickup If You're Sick: It sounds like common sense, but it's definitely worth repeating. Just because you've self-isolated, you don't have to deny yourself food that you didn't need to cook. Just don't order pickup. Get delivery and use the contactless delivery option.
