Selena Gomez Recalls Hitting Rock-Bottom To Write 'Lose You To Love Me'

Selena Gomez has an empowering story to share about “Lose You to Love Me.”

Confiding in gal pal Amy Schumer for Interview Magazine, the “Rare” singer spoke candidly about how “hitting rock-bottom” allowed her to pen one of the most personal ballads of her career. In the interview, Gomez opens up about everything from her mental health, new makeup line, and reclaiming her narrative with her number-one album, Rare.

“I wanted to make sure, especially on this album, that each song meant something to me, that it represented a story that actually happened to me or one that I’m still walking through,” the 27-year-old songbird explained of her intentions behind the LP, which has since become an anthem to so many.

One song, in particular, Gomez’s fans have praised is “Lose You to Love Me,” which finds the pop star rising from the ashes after feeling at her lowest level. When asked if she remembers when she realized she was getting back to herself again, Gomez made some sensitive revelations.

“I do. I wrote it at the beginning of last year, and had just gotten out of treatment,” she recalled. “It was a moment when I came back and I was like, ‘I’m ready to go into the studio with people I trust and start working on songs.’”

Describing the experience, Gomez added: “There was an air around it where people were very happy, because it was like I was going to finally be me. But I didn’t necessarily see it that way at the time. When I wrote the song, I was basically saying that I needed to hit rock-bottom to understand that there was this huge veil over my face.”
