Game over.
Selena Gomez just slapped a mobile game company with a major lawsuit. According to Rolling Stone, the “Rare” singer is seeking up to $10 million in damages from the makers of Clothes Forever — Styling Game for allegedly using her image and likeness without her permission.
Per the publication, the lawsuit states the game “blatantly rips off a popular image of Gomez” from her 2015 Flare cover, and that using her image in this way “creates the false impression that she has endorsed the Game or has something to do with the Game, and undoubtedly is intended to attract consumers to make use of the Game.”
In a statement to Rolling Stone, Alex Weingarten, an attorney for the “Look At Her Now” musician, described Gomez as a “style icon,” adding, “This is an egregious violation of Selena’s rights, which we will litigate vigorously to vindicate.”
What’s more, the mobile-friendly game allows players to “interact with the most beautiful models and celebrities” and reportedly uses the images and likenesses of Kim Kardashian, Gigi Hadid, Beyoncé, Kendal Jenner, and Taylor Swift.
Additionally, the suit also indicates the game, which has an average 3.5 stars of 5 by users, has also been panned for “luring its users to make in-game purchases in amounts as much as $99.99 to fund imaginary spending in the Game and unlock features.”
Due to the alleged violation, the lawsuit indicates the Clothes Forever has negatively impacted Gomez’s other potential mobile game investments, including those “with respect to fashion, in particular.”
The actual amount Gomez is suing for will be determined at trial at a later date.
