Reese Witherspoon is reflecting on her infamous arrest in 2013.
Seven years ago, the Legally Blonde actress and her husband Jim Toth were booked in Atlanta, Georgia, under the suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Now, in a new interview, the 44-year-old recalls the “embarrassing and dumb” situation with a humble perspective.
“You know what — [it] turns out I breathe air. I bleed the same way,” Witherspoon expressed on a recent episode of Jameela Jamil’s i Weigh podcast.“I make dumb decisions. I make great decisions. I’m just being a human being.”
“We're all just the same as each other and we're all trying to find what our special skills are. My special skill is storytelling but that doesn't mean I'm a special person,” the Little Fires Everywhere star went on. “But I did something really stupid. Talent doesn't make you a good person. But a big value in my family was, 'Are you a good person?”
As the story goes, the now-viral video showed Witherspoon resisting police officer orders after being pulled over, which ultimately ended with the actress being arrested after getting into an altercation with an off-duty cop. Even then, Witherspoon accepted her responsibility in the confrontation in an apologetic statement (via PEOPLE) in which she admitted to having “one drink too many” and that she was “deeply embarrassed” about her language in the clip.
“I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse,” she stated at the time. “I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am. I have nothing but respect for the police and I'm very sorry for my behavior.”
