Pete Davidson opened up about a “dark and scary” period of his past.
This week, Davidson reflected on a terrifying moment of his life in a new interview on CBS This Morning. As fans may recall, 2018 was an emotional year for the SNL comedian. Following his highly-publicized relationship with Ariana Grande, the couple called it quits on their romance — and their four-month engagement — in October 2018. The news made Davidson a target of hate by many of Grande’s fans.
After suffering months of harsh headlines in the press, Davidson finally broke his silence with a disturbing message many followers took as suicidal. “I got as close as you can get [to self-harming]. Just testing the waters,” the 26-year-old funnyman admitted to the outlet. “Until I met the right treatments and met the right doctors and did all the work that you need to do to not feel that way, it got pretty dark and scary.”
In December 2018, Davidson expressed not wanting “to be on this earth” after the onslaught of hate he’d received for his romance with Grande. "I've been getting online bullied and in public by people for 9 months,” he wrote at the time. “I’ve spoken about BPD and being suicidal publicly only in the hopes that it will help bring awareness and help kids like myself who don't want to be on this earth.”
The note warranted a wellbeing check-up and prompted Davidson’s friends and fans to spread love and support for the struggling star with heartfelt messages.
Thankfully, these days have been brighter for Davidson, who says his partly-autobiographical film, The King of Staten Island, has helped him manage his mental health struggles. “I really wanted this to be cleansing for me,” he said. ”I feel like I got to speak about it in the biggest way possible, and I could get me story out there. I feel like now, I can let it go.”
