Botham Jean’s Sister Responds To Former Cop’s Appeal In Murder Conviction

The attorneys for Amber Guyger, the former Dallas Police Officer found guilty of shooting and killing Botham Jean, has filed an appeal against her conviction.

According to the appeal filed on Aug. 4, Guyger’s lawyers stated that the evidence turned into the court does not “prove beyond reasonable doubt that Guyger committed murder.” They are working to have the former officer fully cleared of all charges, or either cleared of the murder charge and prosecuted with a minor crime of criminally negligent homicide.

On Sept. 6, 2018, Guyger shot and killed unarmed, 26-year-old Botham Jean in his apartment, which she claimed was an accident thinking the victim was an intruder in her apartment, confused about which floor she was on after working a 13-hour shift.

Guyger was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison, in October 2019.

After the recent appeal, Jean’s sister, Allisa Findley, responded calling it “disrespectful and that the court should have sentenced her to life for murdering my brother.”

“Botham was sitting in his own apartment minding his own business.” says Finley.

“I feel like she received a slap on the wrist for taking my brother’s life. This tells me that she feels like she didn’t do anything wrong. She did not step on my brother’s toe. She took his life.”

If Guyger is charged with criminally negligent homicide, she will face a maximum sentence of 10 years and be eligible for probation.
