Squirrels Are Splooting To Stay Cool During Austin's 100 Degree Days

It's been so hot in Central Texas that not even the squirrels can stand it.

Squirrels have been spotted around Austin laying belly down during a string of 100 degree days. It almost looks like they're melting, but they're actually splooting.

Just like everyone else in Central Texas, these little guys are trying to cool down. Since they don't have the benefit of central air or a fridge full of frosty drinks, squirrels pancake themselves against the floor.

“They are basically getting as much of their body on a cooler surface. If it’s cooler than the air outside, they’re going to put their body on it and it’s going to cool their temperature,” Jill Cacote of Moonshine Wildlife Rehabilitation said in an interview with KXAN.

Squirrels do the same thing in cooler weather to warm up, too.

Animals lovers don't need to worry if they see squirrels lazing in the shade or on their patios.

“If they are just laying, sprawled out and looking around, they’re fine,” said Cacote.

Leaving a little water out for the squirrels is OK. The Wildlife Trust recommends leaving water in a shallow dish near a tree or another source of shade so creatures can take a drink undisturbed. Remember to change the water frequently so it won't attract mosquitoes.

This guy on Reddit decided to make squirrels the ultimate Austin chill out spot in his backyard. It includes a water bottle, deck chair and squirrel-sized YETI cooler filled with seeds for a little afternoon snack.
