A Dearborn man learned the hard way that climbing Mount Rushmore is illegal.
Ayman Doppke was fined $1,500 after pleading guilty to the crime, the Rapid City Journal reported. He was spotted on top of George Washington's head on August 19, according to court documents.
Doppke created a "hazardous condition" by scaling the presidents, which forced law enforcement to go after him. Doppke decided to "go down the steepest and most dangerous route" to avoid officers, the Associated Press reported. It was a bad idea because not only was Doppke caught, but he also fell 25 feet.
The court report says that Doppke ignored signs saying the area was closed and walked around razor wire near the top of the monument.
Prosecutors dropped disorderly conduct charges against Doppke.
He is at least the second Michigan man to be caught climbing the presidents. Zachary Schossau of South Rockwood was also fined in 2018.
