A woman in Round Rock is recovering after her entire body caught on fire.
Katie Wise said that on Sunday night, she was in her regular routine of lighting sage and watching a movie with her three daughters.
She applied an off-brand sanitizer and lit the sage when the flames sparked. It is typical for her family to sanitize because her 14-year-old daughter has many health conditions putting her at high-risk for COVID-19.
Initially, her hand caught on fire. That's when the flames got bigger.
"When I pulled my hand back and the flame from my hand burning got bigger, it touched the bottle of alcohol so it was like the alcohol and the hand sanitizer mixed, and it just went off like a bomb, " she told CBS Austin.
"And it obviously went all over my face. And, in like a matter of five seconds, my whole body was just consumed in flames."
She attempted to extinguish the flames but shifted her focus to getting her daughters and pets to safety outside.
She now has burns from her hands to her feet as well at scratched corneas.
Wise says she is grateful to be alive and hopes her experience can be a warning to other families about the products they may have in their home.
