Woman Makes COVID-19 Piñata, Names It Covy

With the pandemic in full swing and seemingly endless hours at home, it may be hard to find ways to keep yourself busy. One Slaton woman has picked up piñata making.

Hilda Rivera, 78, was in isolation for weeks to help prevent the spread of the virus and she found herself getting anxious, so she started making piñatas.

Rivera told KXAN, "I was going crazy, so I said to myself, 'I better do something' and I tried to make a piñata, and I was surprised at myself that I could do it."

She's made everything from aliens to unicorns, but she says her favorite is one of a COVID-19 molecule that she named Covy.

"It makes me happy that I made it, but it makes me angry that it's there. I hope that somebody buys it and knocks the heck out of it for all it's been doing you know, and maybe they'll feel better," she said.

Being at home for long periods of time during the pandemic can be difficult and often causes feelings of anxiety. Rivera said she encourages others to pick up a hobby to keep themselves busy while at home.
