Metro Nashville Public Schools are one step closer to having their 2020 high school football season, as well as other fall contact sports.
The district announced Friday that coaches have been given approval to resume contact practices, FOX 17 News reports. MNPS has not yet confirmed when games and competitions will be held and said it will continue to monitor COVID-19 metrics before announcing a decision.
"All extracurricular social distancing guidelines and precautions must be followed," MNPS said in a statement. "In alignment with our phase-in approach for in-person learning, we will begin to phase in extracurricular activities as long as conditions allow."
FOX 17 News reports Metro coaches will hold a meeting on Friday at 1:00 p.m to discuss football season plans.
Last month, some parents of MNPS students protested the district's decision to postpone sports and extracurricular activities.
Earlier this month, a high school football game between Dickson County High School and Brentwood High School -- both of nearby districts outside of MNPS' jurisdiction -- was canceled after the Dickson County team confirmed it was dealing with COVID-19 cases, FOX 17 News reports. The game has since been rescheduled for October 8 and previously purchased tickets will be honored.
On Friday, the Nashville Health Department reported a total of 27,009 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Davidson County, including 984 active cases.
