Street In East Nashville Renamed To Honor Fallen Deputy

A portion of the street outside the new Davidson County Sheriff's Office headquarters will be renamed to honor Jerry Newson, Jr., who was killed in the line of duty 25 years ago. On the 10th anniversary of his death in 2005, the Davidson County Sheriff's Office Training Academy was renamed the Jerry Newson Center.

Newson was shot and killed on September 22, 1995, while assisting another deputy with an eviction notice on Briggs Avenue, according to Officer Down Memorial Page. He was 33 years old and had been with the department for seven years. The suspect who shot Newson was convicted of his murder on November 28, 2006, and sentenced to life in prison.

Summer Place, at 710 S. Fifth Street in East Nashville, will be renamed Jerry Newson Way. The Davidson County Sheriff's Office warrant division and training academy was once located there, News 4 reports, but it was demolished and replaced by the Davidson County Sheriff's Office headquarters. The building will now be located at One Jerry Newson Way.

A ceremony will be held Tuesday morning, with Sheriff Daron Hall, retired Sheriff Gayle Ray, Council Member Brett Withers, and members of Newson's family in attendance.
