If you’ve been looking forward to the annual Christmas Story Run, your race ambitions might be as broken as the film’s fragile leg lamp.
Organizers announced Wednesday (September 23) that “with sad hearts,” they opted to postpone this year’s 5K and 10K races to December 2021.
Citing the risk to participants because of “the current state with healthcare concerns,” Race Director Amy Kentner wrote in an announcement that city officials couldn’t promise permitting for the Christmas Story Run this year.
The Ohio Department of Health has tracked more than 146,700 total COVID-19 cases and more than 4,600 deaths as of Wednesday, latest data show.
The annual event would have taken place December 5. Those registered will receive refunds by September 30.
Runners, sponsors and volunteers have raised more than $600,000 over the past seven years, restoring Ralphie’s neighborhood in Tremont.
Each year, Clevelanders and visitors are drawn to the Christmas Story Run. Many also make seasonal excursions to the Christmas Story House and Museum, which remains open year-round.
The West 11th Street house has been restored to reflect the home’s setup in the classic Christmas movie. Across the street, the museum displays memorabilia and behind-the-scenes photos. Some notable items include Randy’s snowsuit, the family car and others, according to the Christmas Story House and Museum.
“While we share in the community’s disappointment, our goal is to be back together in Cleveland for the 8th annual event (in 2021), stronger than ever,” Kentner wrote. “We hope you have a wonderful Holiday season.”
