Mayor Cooper Declares September 23 As Roman Josi Day

Nashville Mayor John Cooper signed a proclamation on Wednesday stating that September 23, 2020 would be Roman Josi Day in the city. Josi, the captain of the Nashville Predators, was awarded this year's Norris Trophy by the National Hockey League.

Each year, the NHL awards the James Norris Memorial Trophy to the league's top defense player. Josi is the first player in Predators franchise history to win the honor.

"Today, I proclaimed #RomanJosiDay in Nashville to honor 'the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-around ability in the position,'" Mayor Cooper said in a tweet Wednesday. "Congratulations on receiving the 2020 Norris Trophy, a first in @PredsNHL history."

After a season of campaigning that was cut short by the pandemic, Josi was named this year's winner on Tuesday. The Nashville Predators showed their appreciation for the captain in a highlight video. All season long, the Switzerland-born player demonstrated his ability as a defenseman while showcasing his skill in producing offense. During the regular season, he scored 16 goals and had 49 assists.

Josi was drafted in the second round of the 2008 draft by the Predators and last year signed an eight-year, $72 million contract extension. He and his wife Ellie Ottaway live in Nashville and are currently expecting their first child in the spring.
