Norfolk Police: Construction Worker Dies After Fall On Colley Avenue

A construction worker reportedly fell to his death in Norfolk Wednesday morning.

Norfolk Police responded to the scene at the intersection of Colley Avenue and West Brambleton Avenue Wednesday morning, WAVY reports. Police confirmed the scene was at the site of a new Eastern Virginia Medical School building under construction.

Initially, Norfolk dispatchers believed the man was a window washer, but police confirmed he was a construction worker after arriving at the scene. The construction worker was pronounced dead after authorities arrived at around 8:30 a.m., WAVY reports.

Norfolk Police do not suspect foul play was involved in the construction worker's death as of Wednesday morning. No additional details are available at this time.

Construction to expand East Virginia Medical School's campus began in April 2018, WVEC reports. The school is building an 11-story EVMS education and academic support building, which is part of an $80 million project.

In April 2018, EVMS president Dr. Richard Homan said campus expansion was necessary to meet the growth of enrollment at the school over the last several years, WVEC reports.

The state of Virginia pledged $67 million toward the building's total cost, while the rest was paid through fundraising, philanthropy and bond insurances, WPEC reports. Construction was initially expected to be finished in May 2020.
