What do Mark Cuban, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Aston Kutcher all have in common? They're trying to save the world one roll of toilet paper at a time.
Cuban joined Paltrow, Kutcher, Robert Downey Jr., Russell Wilson, Ciara, and others in investing a collective $3 million to Cloud Paper, a Seattle-based startup specializing in tree-free toilet paper.
“I think it’s a great product on the right mission!” Cuban said in an email to Dallas Culturemap.
Cloud Paper is supposed to be a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional toilet paper because it's made from bamboo. Since it's tree free, Cloud Paper's TP doesn't contribute to deforestation the way traditional TP does.
“We know that deforestation is a leading cause of climate change. We’re giving every person an opportunity to be a part of the solution by preserving forests every single day,” said Ryan Fritsch, the company's co-founder, in a statement. “We are resetting the status quo by moving away from tree-based paper and using ultra-sustainable, renewable resources like bamboo instead.”
It's not surprising that Cuban is investing in a climate conscious company because he's been vocal abut climate change and renewable energy in the past. After the U.S. pulled out of the Paris Agreement in 2017, Cuban said that any "reasonable person" would want to find a solution for climate change. He's also put actions behind his words by buying carbon offsets for the Dallas Mavericks' travel and invested in a solar energy company on "Shark Tank."
