2 Arrested For Climbing Progressive Field Fence 'To Watch The Ballgame'

Two men were arrested Wednesday (September 30) for allegedly hopping the fence into Progressive Field — which currently bars fans from entering because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic — to watch the Cleveland Indians playoff game against the New York Yankees.

Although formal charges haven’t been filed yet, both 36-year-old men, neither of whom have been named publicly, will be charged with burglary, cleveland.com reported Thursday (October 1).

Police reports show the men, who both smelled like alcohol, admitted to officers that they climbed the stadium fence because they “just wanted to watch the ballgame.” The duo broke in around 11:40 p.m., behind left field bleachers, when security officers at the stadium noticed them on surveillance cameras, cleveland.com reported.

They were escorted out of Progressive Field during the bottom of the fifth, which ESPN happened to catch on camera and some have since shared on social media. Clevelanders will recognize a fan in the video with a drum standing outside the fence, a nod to legendary drummer John Adams, local media outlets noted.

The Ohio Department of Health has recorded more than 155,300 total cases of the novel coronavirus as of Thursday, That includes more than 15,600 hospitalizations and more than 4,800 deaths statewide.
