Gov. Northam Sends President, First Lady 'Best Wishes' Amid COVID-19 Tests

Virginia governor Ralph Northam extended best wishes to President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump amid news of both testing positive for COVID-19.

"Pam and I are sending our best wishes to the President and First Lady, and to the more than 46,000 Americans—and 450 Virginians—also diagnosed with #COVID19 yesterday," Northam tweeted on Friday. "This virus is very real and very serious. Let’s continue to take care of each other by doing the right things."

Governor Northam announced he and his wife had also both tested positive for COVID-19 last week.

President Trump announced both he and the first lady tested positive for COVID-19 in a tweet shared early Friday morning.

"Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately," Trump tweeted. "We will get through this TOGETHER!"

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows told USA Today the president was "feeling mild symptoms" but "energetic" after news of his positive test broke Friday.

The announcement came hours after Trump's adviser, Hope Hicks, who had recently traveled with the president, was reported to have tested positive for COVID-19.

Vice President Mike Pence, second lady Karen Pence, secretary of state Mike Pompeo and treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin have all reportedly tested negative, USA Today reports.

Former Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden also confirmed he and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, both tested negative for COVID-19. Biden participated in an on-stage presidential debate alongside Trump just days before the president's positive test results.

The Bidens also wished the Trumps a "swift" recovery prior to confirming news of their negative tests.

"Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery," Joe Biden tweeted. "We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family."
