Police Arrest Second Teen In Connection To Death Of Two 14-Year-Old Boys

Winston-Salem Police have arrested a second teenager in connection to the death of two 14-year-old boys in August. The first suspect was arrested August 5 and was charged as a juvenile with accessory after the fact to a felony, Fox 8 reports. The second suspect was charged Monday (October 5) with two counts of first-degree murder. The names of the 17-year-old suspects have not been released.

Shortly after midnight on August 1, police responded to an incident on Utah Drive where they found two boys who had been shot. Jesus Candela-Abonza was pronounced dead at the scene, and Dylan Lopez was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. Police said that their deaths were the 17th and 18th homicides this year, compared to 15 homicides at the same time in 2019, WXII reports.

According to WXII, witnesses saw vehicle drive through the area and begin firing at the victims and others at a small gathering at the address. They told police that multiple shots were fired, and police later corroborated the statements after finding multiple shell casings in the area.

Authorities are still looking for additional information about the incident and ask that anyone with information about the investigation contact the Winston-Salem Police Department at (336) 773-7700 or Crime Stoppers at (336) 727-2800.
