There is now a whole new way to experience San Antonio's River Walk.
For the first time in 30 years, kayaks will be allowed on the water through the business district.
"This is a whole new route, a whole new ball game," San Antonio River Walk Association Executive Director Maggie Thompson told MySA.
For October, kayakers can either rent a watercraft or bring their own and navigate the River Walk. A reservation is required so people can't just plop their kayak in the water and paddle away.
For $50 per person (or $15 if you bring your own kayak), you can glide along the River Walk on either Friday, Saturday, or Sunday at a scheduled time. Right now, Mission Kayak and SARWA are only offering morning trips so kayakers and the river barges won't interfere with each other.
It's a four mile trip that takes around two hours to complete, and kayakers can go at their own pace. Kayaking groups will be staggered to make sure everyone is able to social distance while paddling.
The city and SARWA hopes that the trips will bring in some much needed revenue since annual events along the River Walk have been canceled due to the pandemic. The latest cancellation is the Ford Holiday River Parade.
