Murals Are Being Incorporated Along Trinity River Trails

Murals are being incorporated on structures along the Trinity River Trails.

Anya Boz is a New York artist that grew up in Keller. As an artist, Boz's work often involves fantastical creatures and animals.

"They're kind of so common you don't really think about them. The royalty of their kind," she said while finishing up the wings on the cicada she was painting onto a pair of concrete flood gates.

The flood gates stand out among the trees, grasses, and bends of the river that the Trinity Trails system follows.

More than 20 of the utilitarian gates are now receiving a makeover as a part of the art project put on by the Tarrant Regional Water District.

Tina Nokolic, a recreation program coordinator for the district, told CBS DFW, "They're going to be there, so what else can we do? What other experience can we add to the trail users?"

Murals made the most sense for the area so they put out a request for submissions from artists with a nature, river, and water themes. They received hundreds of submissions from artists around the world.

“Our intention was always to try and curate an experience, with all of these structures,” Nikolic said.

The intent of the murals was not only to beautify the area, but to draw in visitors to the trails as well. Nikolic says there have already been bike tours scheduled for groups wanting to view the murals.

The artists are being paid for their work. TRWD committed $120,000 to the project.

The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2021.
