Memphis Officials Prepare For Possible Election Day Unrest

As a contentious Election Day approaches, Memphis Police are preparing for any possible unrest stemming from the results. The uncertainty surrounding this election, as well as the increased gun sales, has led many to fear what the repercussions of the election results.

"There is fear and anxiety around what will happen around Election Day," said Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris. "But rest assured, there is lots of activity taking place right now to keep all of us safe."

Memphis Police Director Mike Rallings said officers will be watching for threats and will provide support to officials should they need it.

"Officers will continue to conduct additional patrols in the area of voting locations and will respond to any calls that they may receive for assistance," said Memphis Police Lt. Karen Rudolph. "Like all law enforcement agencies, we will monitor any situation that may arise and will respond accordingly."

According to WMC 5, officials have been practicing simulation exercises with TEMA on how to handle voter intimidation and suppression tactics. The worries and fears about the election results are not just a local idea. Cities around the country are preparing for potential incidents following Election Day.

"Concerns have been voiced nationally and here locally regarding potential unrest voter intimidation, and manipulation of votes during and after this year's election," said Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland. "The integrity of your vote will be maintained."
