The family of a 72-year-old woman in San Antonio believes she's being scammed by someone claiming to be the actor Jason Momoa.
The faux Momoa reached out to the woman through Facebook, struck up a romance, and asked her to contact him through a private chat app, WOAI News 4 reported.
"He tells me he loves me, and I tell him I love him back," the woman said.
The woman's name wasn't given to protect her identity. Her adult son reached out the the tv station because "he's not been able to convince his mother, who has no cognitive impairment, that she's being conned."
The woman really believes that the person she's talking to is really the actor who played Aquaman. She said they call and text each other daily.
Whoever is on the other end convinced the woman to accept two wire transfers from him for $30,000 and $50,000. She then transferred that money to another account at the scammer's request.
Fake Momoa told the woman that he's getting a divorce and needed to stash money away. The real Momoa is married to Lisa Bonet and spoke positively about spending time with her and their two children during the pandemic in an interview on the Daily Show last month.
It's really unlikely that the woman is speaking to the actual actor. Her financial dealings with the person to are suspicious too since wire transfers can be used to scam unsuspecting people.
A similar celebrity catfish scam happened to another Texas woman who said she was in love with Brad Pitt.
