Maricopa County Attorney Hospitalized For Brain Bleed On Election Night

Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday night because of a brain bleed.

Adel underwent emergency surgery and is in a serious but stable condition on Wednesday morning, according to her spokesperson.

"Her family is grateful for the outpouring of support and asks for continued prayers for Allister. This is understandably a very difficult situation and we ask that their privacy be respected at this time," said spokesperson Jennifer Liewer in a statement.

Adel's seat was up for election and the incumbent is currently trailing against Democratic candidate Julie Gunnigle, 51% to 49%. No winner has been declared as of Wednesday morning.

Gunnigle released a statement on Twitter wishing Adel a full recovery.

"My thoughts are with Allister and her family. We should give them privacy in this moment and we wish for a full recovery," she wrote.

Adel, a Republican, was appointed as the county attorney in late 2019 by Governor Doug Ducey to fill a vacancy, KJZZ reported. The winner will complete the remainder of the term, which ends on January 2021.
