Florida Woman Found Dead In Car Submerged In Alligator Alley Canal

A woman was found dead in a car crash on Interstate 75 early Friday morning (November 6), officials say.

A 911 call rang in to dispatch at 6:46 a.m. sending out troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol.

When troopers arrived at the scene of the crash near Mile Marker 73 on Alligator Alley, the woman was already dead, according to NBC-2.

Her car was completely submerged in the canal and alligators were surrounding it, making it difficult for the troopers and divers to assess the scene.

The crash occurred in the northbound lanes of I-75 towards Naples.

Officials have not yet determined the cause of the crash.

Back in September, Alligator Alley was all over Florida headlines with strange occurrences on the popular highway.

In early September an airplane made an emergency landing on top of Alligator Alley, only to get clipped by a landscaping truck shortly after.

Alligator Alley received its name before it was even open for traffic in February of 1968. The American Automobile Association believed it would be useless to cars and just an "alley for alligators."

Over the years, as alligators sightings became increasingly common, the nickname took on a more literal meaning.

The state of Florida officially adopted the name in 1966.
